Way to avoid setting up Mail to email from online links?

I recently got a new macbook pro, and have not set up Mail yet. I do not plan on using it. When I click on any contact links online (safari browser) it does not display address but automatically sends me to Mail and prompts me for setup. I don't have transfer info for account and don't want to use mail at all. Maybe this is more of a safari question, but is there any way for email links online to direct me someplace other than mail or just display the address instead of opening mail app?

You don't have to use Mail and Mail can change the default email application.
Open Mail.
From the Mail menu, choose Preferences.
Click the General button.
Choose your desired default email application from the Default Email Reader pop-up menu.
OR you can use RCDefaultApp to change the default email client.

I've got Mail 2.1 and I can select which account mail is sent from. However, my friend has version 1.3.1 and although she's set up aliases on dot mac on the web, we can't see how to do it on her version. Does she need a later version - I think she is running Panther. Many thanks...

The ability to send directly with .mac alias addresses was only added to 10.4 and Mail 2.0.
If you have other accounts, provided for example by your ISP, you can add the .mac alias addresses to those addresses listed in the email address preference entry box of the other accounts, and using commas to separate each address.
If, however, there is a desire for privacy, this method will show the current Full Name on the POP account. Another approach is to set up a new POP account for each .mac alias address, with the Username of the alias as Username, and the key thing is to BOTH deselect to include when automatically checking for new mail AND take the account Offline. Even Offline, it will still send. Of course you enter the same SMTP as Outgoing Server as you use with POP accounts on this mac, although it might be possible to use the smtp.mac.com now that it allowed, but not implemented in Panther -- I don't have Panther set up to test with, currently.
Since never checked, under any circumstance, it never polls the server and never fails.
Let me know if this works, or is not clear.

I wonder if anyone can tell me how to set up Mail so I can check my messages from an internet based e-mail? I'm using Wanadoo and would like to able to receive messages straight to Mail rather than have to check them 'online'. Hope someone can help, thanks in advance.

I checked Wanadoo's website and it appears you can create your Wanadoo account in Mail and with other email clients as a POP type account.
Wanadoo provides instructions for doing so using Windows Outlook Express but the required account settings are the same to create the account with the Mail.app such as:
At the Mail.app menu bar, go to Mail > Preferences > Accounts. Select the + sign at the bottom of the accounts window to add a new email account selecting POP as the account type.
Account Description: Whatever you prefer such as Wanadoo.
Email Address Field: Enter your Wanadoo email address.
Full Name: Whatever you prefer which will be shown next to your email address when a message is received.
User Name: This should include everything after the '@' symbol for your Wanadoo email address. Note: If you use their Broadband service, do not include '@fs' at the end of your Username for email.
Password: Your Wanadoo account password.
Incoming Mail Server: pop.wanadoo.co.uk
Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.wanadoo.co.uk
This should be all you need.
If your email address includes Freeserve instead of xxxxxx.wanadoo.co.uk, the incoming and outgoing mail servers are different.

Apple Mail : Move emails from one account to another

Good Day,
I please need help with Apple Mail. A client of mine recently changed her email address from her webhost to online exchange. I setup her new email in Apple Mail and that is all working and nice.
Her Apple mail now shows 2 accounts:
- the old IMAP
- the new Exchange
I would like to consolidate all emails from her old IMAP account to her new Exchange account, so that they are all in one place. In Outlook you can just drag and drop emails and folders between the accounts, but my client says that that doesn't work in Apple Mail.
How would I go about moving these emails from one email account within Apple Mail to another?
Sorry for the trivial question, but I am a Windows girl and not as versed in Mac;)

Try creating a new mailbox in the On My Mac section and drag the e-mails there. Mail/Mailbox/New Mailbox.

Suddenly none of my email from my century link account is reaching my iPod mailbox. This has just happened in the last few days. I'm wondering if it is possible that my iCloud filters are detecting this email as spam?

Controlling URL in "Email as online link"

As standard functionality in our templates, users are able to email their reports/templates. One of the options when emailing a report is to send as online link.
The email is generated and sent through to the correct person, but the link that comes through is incorrect.
There are 2 URL's which are used to access the server
A03A005 ... this is the actual server name
BWPORTAL ... this is the url that has been registered on the internal DNS, and the one the users are using to gain access ot the portal.
A user's machine has no idea what A03A005 refers to, and is unable to resolve an IP for the hostname ... this is all as expected.
I have a system configured in the portal, and hte ITS hostname, Message Server and Web AS all point to BWPORTAL.
When the online link option is chosen during broadcasting/emailing, the email that comes through has the A03A005 address, which obviously doesn't work on the user's machine when he/she clicks on it.
Can anyone tell me where this URL, or at the least the main part of it / domain part of it, is configured ... I would like to change it and don't know where to look.

Check Function Module RSBBURLGET and see whether it generates the correct URL. profile parameters will have to be corrected to get the correct URL.

What is the best way to transfer my Yahoo mail account email, email folders and contacts to Mac Mail?

A new version of Yahoo Mail has unexpectedly been dumped on long time users a few days ago, leaving many of us with functions that no longer work and are unstable. There was no announcement of a Beta or a possibility of retaining the old Yahoo Mail. It was like "Here it is, like it or not. We don't care."
My son said "Why don't you use another email client?". I thought of Mac Mail immediately. I have found a lot of instructions as to how to move my Yahoo mail components, and they sound pretty easy, but what I haven't found is what happens to my Inbox email, my archived email and my contacts. Do I have to move all those components to Mac Mail manually, and if so, will they now reside on my hard drive? Maybe I'm getting in over my head here. Some of the instructions say all I need is just my Full Name, Email address and Password. I guess I'm a cynic. It just sounds too good to be true. What happens to the stuff that was on Yahoo?
I have a couple of other reputable email accounts, but I would have to go through all my friends and businesses and inform them of the changed email addy.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've never bothered w/Yahoo Mail latest upgrades or updates.
You can switch back to the old version of Yahoo Mail by going into your Yahoo Preferences and/or check the top right hand corner of its website.

Setting up Mail - combining inboxes from old machines

I have an issue that everyone I have spoken with doesn't know whether it can be resolved.
I originally had a Macbook which had my emails set up on. A year after getting my macbook, I also got an iMac. When I got the iMac I never transferred the existing inbox from my Macbook on to the iMac. This meant that the Macbook had a years worth of emails the iMac didn't. A few weeks back I sold my Macbook (after backing up my mail folder) and I have now sold my iMac as well and replaced it with a sparkly new Macbook Pro.
So my dilemma is, the macbook mail files has original emails. But the iMac has emails that have been received after selling my macbook. So each plist file has different emails somehow. Is there a way to merge 2 plist files?? I would like ALL emails on my MacBook Pro...
If not then I will just have to install the ones from the iMac and just keep the macbook ones on a hard drive backed up just in case i ever needed to get to them.

Can you tell us more about how the Mail program on each machine is configured? Is it set to POP or IMAP? Are both machines checking the same email address or different ones? Have you tried exporting the mbox files from one machine and then importing them into the other?
Probably the quickest and easiest way is to configure the email account in question for IMAP and sync the folders up with the messages. If the email account you're using doesn't support IMAP then you can easily export folders and import them between machines.

Set mozilla thunderbird to email from iphoto?

because Mail is incompatible with my ISP--it works only if I call them up each time to change settings--a topic beyond my understanding--I cannot email photos unless I export them first, and use another program to make attachments. That is inconvenient, to say the least.
I am able to use Mozilla Thunderbird. However, I do not see a way to use Thunderbird with iPhoto. It is not listed as a choice under preferences. Is it possible to do that?

No it is not possible for you to add e-mail clients to iPhoto - but try posting your mail issue in the Tiger mail forum - http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=753 - millions and millions of people are using Apple mail with thousands of ISPs - your problem can be solved and you can join them

Why can't mail import email from thunderbird?

I just for a MacBook Pro with LION. I exported my Windows Live Mail to Thunderbird for PC to Thunderbird for MAC. Now when I try to import from Apple/Mac Mail I only get 1 file per local folder. I'm using Thunderbird OK but want to go to Mac Mail entirely. I've scoured the threads and have got nothing but sales pitches for one time use utilities I have to pay for.
Is this a way to treat a Windows convert?? Please help.

Your welcome. Yes Migration Assistant creates a new user account, that's it's downside. Down the road when you get new Macs migration will be much easier. With a new Mac it initially starts up with Setup Assistant and asks if you are migrating from another Mac. You answer yes and it will migrate data, settings, applications etc. to the new machine and NOT create a new user account. You can migrate from the Mac itself, a Time Machine Backup or from a Bootable Clone.
BTW as a new OS X user I'd recommend bookmarking the following links. While learning OS X is very easy sometimes transitioning from MS Windows can be a little challenging, you're working off of old habits and sometimes thinking it has to be complex. At some point you will probably laugh when you see how simple everything is with OS X.

I am turned down when trying to add a second POP account to mail. Any advice? Is it even possible?

Welcome to the Discussions.
If truly separate POP email addresses, then the Username for each will either be the portion of the email address in front of the "@", or the entire email address, depending on the protocol of the provider. I suspect you are trying to enter the same Username in the setup for each?

How do i get back to my email from a link?

After connecting to a link from my email, how do I get back to the email? Right now I am shutting it down and restarting my mail.

Double click on the Home button and in the bottom row you will see the recently opened apps. Tap the Mail app to get back to Mail.

Are you trying to send mail to that address from a different address, or from her own address?
What are the specific settings for the account (Incoming and Outgoing servers, port numbers for each, authentication method, and SSL status)?
