WD External 14.5 GB left, used it before, now says READ ONLY!?!

Can't transfer files onto Western Digital external HD?
Anyone know how to fix?
Thanks!

Hi I'm A Mac
Normaly the only format the Mac can not write to is NTFS for windows!
Open Disk Utility and select the mounted drive to check the format?

I I have a 1 TG external drive that is formatted to Windows NTFS and is read only, how do i get it to read and write on my Mac OS X 10.6.3?

Install software such as Paragon NTFS, or reformat it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or FAT32. Mac OS X 10.6.5 and newer can also read and write exFAT partitions.

iMovie was removed from my macbook pro after I downloaded OS X Yosemite, I had it before and have used it, but now I can only get it through the app store. I can't pay for it so I would really appreciate the help.

Look in your applications folder for the installer - Install OS X Yosemite. Delete it. Then go back to the App Store purchases tab and see if you can download it. You might have to re-index Spotlight.

  • Iomega external hard drive either 'not found' by Time Machine or is now in 'read only' format

I don't know what's going on with my iomega external hard drive.  Sometimes the HD is recognised by the computer; other times it isn't; if it isn't I can restore to an earlier back up via Time Machine app; but it's like the disk isn't writable.
Ten days ago, I had trouble backing up my iMac using Time Machine.  After turning it off and restarting my external hard drive, it backed up successfully.
However, today I am trying to back up my files, and TM tells me it can't find the external hard drive.  Nothing has changed -- I have been out of town this past week -- but somehow my HD now seems to be in 'read only' format.  It does turn on, and I could restore my computer to an earlier back up.
"Mac OS X can't repair the disk.  You can still open or copy files on the disk, but you can't save changes to files on the disk.  Back up the disk and reformat it as soon as you can."
Annoyingly, despite my HD not showing in Finder or on my Desktop (as it usually does), when I simply turn it off I get that warning message "The disk was not ejected properly".
Have tried verifying and repairing using Disk Utility, to no avail.
Am prompted to reformat but I don't have a good understanding of what this means and how to do it.  I'm guessing this would wipe the disk clean and I'd have to create the initial back up image all over again -- I'm reluctant to do this since this HD is my only back up and if it all goes tits up I'll be up that famous creek without a paddle.
Thoughts, suggestions, input all welcome and deeply appreciated -- thank you!

It's possible a heavy-duty 3rd-party disk repair app can fix it, but they're expensive (DiskWarrior is about $100), and there's no guarantee it can do it.

That will erase it.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #5.
It sounds very much like the disk is beginning to fail, although it's possible there's a bad port, cable, connection or power supply (if it has its own).
I'd suggest getting a new one, and using it for your Time Machine backups; once you have a good backup there, reformat the old one (and select Security Options to write zeros to the whole drive -- if that fails, you know the drive is toast).  Use it for secondary backups, per FAQ #27.   If it has failed, get a second new one for secondary backups.

  • Using iTunes Library with a read-only account...

Hi! I use my HD connected to my AEBS and to create some accounts in which people can use information on the shared folder that is created when the account preference is chosen. I later copied my iTunes library in the same folder so that everybody had access to it. Most of the users I created have restricted access (meaning read-only access). The ones that have full acces had no problem but the ones that have read-only access, when they try to choose the iTunes library, recieve a message saying "The folder "iTunes" is in a locked disk or you do not have write permissions for this folder.". I clearly understand what the problem is and why it is not letting those users acces it but does anybody has an idea on how I can make the iTunes library accessible to the "read-only users"? Thanks!

iTunes was NOT built for multi-user "write" access. Allowing write access to more than one user of iTunes "concurrently" is a recipe for disaster: sooner or later your iTunes database will get corrupted. You have been warned.

  • An External Hard Drive says read only, I want to write to this drive.  How do I change this?

My external hard drive, which is connected via firewire, changed to a read only drive.  I want to write to this drive.  How do I change the setting to write to the drive?

If the drive comes from the Windows world, it will probably have an NTFS format. MacOS doesn't like NTFS and won't write to it. Would have to get some third party driver to enable writing.

  • Is it possible to Update Powerpoint slides from the Sharepoint slide-library using Macros when its in read-only mode?

As Wendy Li informed that PPT ask you to update from slide library automatically. But this happens only if the slides are saved in your system(in read write mode). Is it possible to run the updates automatically on Read-only slides as well.
    Thanks.
    Old:
Currently I'm executing the task manualy by using the Check for updates option. But I'm willing to develop a macro code which can be executed when the slide is open and automatically replaces the slides with the latest one from the Slide-Library. Any links
to pre-existing code will be helpful. Thanks.

    Hi SamGoe,
According to your description, my understanding is that you want to update the PoerPoint slide from SharePoint 2010 slide library automatically.
It seems to be not necessary to use Macros. SharePoint provides an OOB way to notify you to check for update to the slide library slides when you open the presentation. PowerPoint does this because you selected the option
Tell me when this slide changes when you copied the slides from the library.
More information, please refer to the link below:

    I hope this helps.

no entity beans) are set to NOT_SUPPORTED but every time a method is accessed

BEGIN TRANS in read only database .....
Is there a way to avoid this?

  • HT201250 My external hard drive suddenly says "read-only" should I run a disk repair on it and what does that do?

Has any one used Disk Repair on an external hard drive? Does it erase everything?

    Repair the Hard Drive
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Fix Permissions for a Locked Drive
Open Terminal in the Utilities folder. Paste the following at the prompt. Press RETURN after each. The first command will prompt for you to enter your admin password. It will not be echoed to the screen. After entering your password press RETURN again.
    sudo chflags 0 /volumes/*
    sudo chmod a+rx /volumes/*
    killall finder
An alternative is to download BatChmod and use it to fix the permissions.

  • Toshiba HD worked fine with 2008 MBPro, but when I try to use with new MBAir, it says "read only" - how can I fix?

I have a Toshiba external HD that I used with my old 2008 MBPro with no issues. I just got a new MBAir, and when I try to use the same Toshiba HD it will not allow me to write to the drive. The drive mounts and I can open files from it, but when I look at the info under Sharing & Permissions it says "You can only read." I'm not able to Verify it in Disk Utility either, as when I open it there all the Verify buttons are greyed out.
I also noticed the drive format says Windows NTSF, which I don't understand since I was using it with a Mac before and have never used it with a PC. Do I have to reformat it to write to it from my MBAir? I have files on there that I don't want to lose, and the only PC I have available to me is at work.

  • Time Machine says "read-only", "can't repair", & won't backup to external HD.

I really, REALLY do not want to start over a lose all my past backups. I also do not have another external hard drive this big and can't really afford a new one any time soon.
Is there a way to fix this without too much trouble?
It was running fine just a few days ago. I unplug the HD from time to time and don't always start it when I start my computer.
I'm using a Western Digital My Book Studio (I believe) hard drive.
    Help?

Nope, nope, nope. I tried all that the first time everything happened. I consider myself fairly computer savvy in that I usually do the general troubleshoots first.
I shut down the computer. Restarted the computer. Nothing after 30 min. So I shut it down and restarted again. Reset PRAM. Disk Utility + Mount. Disk Utility Repair Disk. Various other tricks. Nothing.
It finally showed in the Finder for some reason and in fear I bought a new hard drive and copied my backup files. Just did that today.
I'd love to use the same hard drive, but it won't allow me do anything for some reason saying I don't have permission.
I'm just going to use the new hard drive and reformat the hard drive again from scratch.
    Thanks for the reply though.

  • .mp3 files that used to play now say 'the file is corrupt' but they play fine in google crome. Do you have problems with your default mp3 player?

I've posted a number of mp3 file links on our website. All have been functioning and playing well until this week, they are no longer playing when clicked on. The new tab opens, thinks, then says that the "video cannot be played because the file is corrupt". These files are able to be downloaded and played from individual computers and will play fine in other browsers - such as Google Chrome.
Not sure if there is an issue with Firefox default mp3 player?

I assume that this is because of the way the MP3 file is encoded.
    Sample rate: 22050 Hz
    Bitrate: 32 kb/s
If I open the file in a tab then I see a media player, but inspecting the page source shows a video tag with no source attribute, so Firefox seems to have a problem with decoding the media header despite the audio/mpeg content type.
I don't know what to do about this apart from playing the file in an external player or play the file via an object or embed tag to make Firefox use a plugin.
Using a bookmarklet like this to force an audio tag doesn't work as well:
    <pre><nowiki>data:text/html,<audio src="%S" controls>
    </nowiki></pre>

  • 4G Touch sync problem - existing purchases that used to play now say can't be converted

Hello - I seem to have a combination of issues.  My 4G 32GB was lost for about 10 months (it was in my couch).  I immediately backed it up and updated to 6.1.5.  From what I understand my 4G won't support IOS 7 so....I tried to sync and noticed that half my library was not playing. It showed on the ipod but the songs were skipped over.  I checked iTunes and tried to re-sync several times.  It has not helped.  I have a combination of purchased songs, that used to play fine, and other songs, that also used to play fine, now won't play at all.  I get the error saying that they could not be found or that they can't be converted.  I am at a loss on what to do.  I admit I am not too savy when it comes to navigating this ipod and itunes.  I like to plug and go - keep it easy.  I appreciate any help.  I have looked at other threads but I am not sure which of the many many many ideas I should utilise.
    Thank you

Assuming they play in iTunes on the computer:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync all music and resync
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

Are you saying that in the Get Info window you don't see a section like this:
