WD MyBook worked on MacBook, not recognized on iBook

I had to send my Macbook (with latest Tiger) in for repairs, and backed up everything to my western digital mybook essential. I am using my fiancee's iBook (with panther) until then, but it says "you are using a disk with volumes that Mac OS X cannot read...." and gives me options to "initialize", "eject" or "ignore."
I now realize that hitting "initialize" may have been very stupid. My question is "how stupid?" When I hit initialize, thinking it meant "mount the stupid disk", it took me to disk utility but none of the options to anything were available other than to eject. Did I destroy my data?
Please help!

Yes erasing does take time. Initializing does not erase all of data but it does clear the directory structure. You will need to use a recovery application like File Salvage or Data Rescue to get access to your information.

    HI,
Go to the Apple icon menu and hold the ALT key down whilst doing so.
Select System Profiler (it changes when and if you hold the ALT key down)
IN the System Profiler open up the Hardware > USB option
Does this list the camera ?
If not then do a SMC/PMU reset (the model Specific bits are at the bottom)
If it does appear then Log in a different Mac User Account (You may need to create one in System Preferences > Accounts)
Do those same Apps "see" the camera now ?

  • WD MyBook Premium 320GB Firewire not recognized on my MBP?

    Hey guys,
First off, thank you for the help anyone is willing to offer.
Ok, so i have a MBP Intel Core Duo (1gb RAM) and use it to record music on. But basically, i have a WD MyBook Premium 320GB drive that works perfectly fine via USB. It powers up, mounts, and i can back anything i want on it. I formatted the drive to Mac Extended Journal format.
I would like to use the firewire port though, just to keep my USB ports open. When i plug it via Firewire i get nada. I plug it in and power up the MBP and the drive doesnt power up, so i turn it on and it doesnt mount. Now, THis is the second one i have, i had the same one a few weeks ago and returned it for this one thinking the drive was defective but its obviously not. is there anyway to "turn on" or Fix this issue with the firewire not recognizing the drive?
    thanks alot for the help
Macbook Pro 15" Intel Core Cuo   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Ace King, in case you're still dealing with this I figured it out:
I called tech support for an hour. First lady I talked to told me the firewire cable that was supplied with the drive is defective (she knew the problem right away). Tried my own cable but it still didn't work. She put me on to "Level 2"....ooooooh....now I'm getting somewhere? No, wait for 15 more minutes listening to terrible muzak...
Anyways while I was waiting I thought I'd try my good cable in the other port on the drive and oila! So when the dude gets on the phone I ask him what the deal is...get this:
"The faulty cable most likely fried the port." Wow...not only is the cable crap it actually destroys their product...someone must have lost their job for that one. Seems like sabotage almost...anyways, there you go. Return it and DO NOT use the cable supplied.
    Cheers!

  • Really frustrating - Macbook not recognizing built-in ethernet cable

I am a college student who purchased the macbook one year ago
My macbook is not recognizing the ethernet cable plugged into it.
I thought it was the ethernet cable itself but I tested my roommate's cable and it wasn't also recognized (his computer's internet works fine)
This is frustrating because I am relying on the college wireless and the signal is flaky at best from my dorm
I am guessing that either some harddrive or software is messed up
    Anyone can help me?
Do I have to go to the apple store? My warranty is expired and a very busy semester is about to start so I don't want to send it in for a long time

Have you used the MacBook in multiple locations in the dorm (on the same subnet)? If you connect through a mini-hub or -switch (rather than plugging directly into the Ethernet port provided by the school), the hub or switch may be holding on to the MacBook's MAC address even when the MacBook is disconnected. When you then plug in in another room, the school's networking equipment may think that the same MAC address (the same computer) is connected on two ports at once -- which just doesn't work. You may get an IP address, but be unable to do anything; or you may get a 169.x.x.x IP address. The school's networking folks can look at the network infrastructure equipment -- the big switches in the wiring closets -- to see if the MAC address is registered on multiple ports.
The best solution is to replace those bad min-hubs or mini-switches -- they shouldn't hang onto MAC addresses for computer that are no longer connected. But if that's not an option (or just to test the theory), unplug (power off) every hub or switch you have plugged into, and see if you can get online after powering them up again. You would have to power cycle the hub or switch every time you use one.
Another test is to try to connect somewhere else on campus, on a different subnet. If it also doesn't work on another subnet, the solution described above does not apply. There are other potential culprits, such as the subnet running out of IP addresses, rogue routers installed by other students, and needing to register for the school's network, misconfigured network settings, and of course, defective hardware. You might try starting up from the MacOS Installer disc and running the Network Utility to rule out misconfigured network settings.

  • MacBook not recognizing Keyboard and trackpad

Our white MacBook has suddenly devepoped the problem of not recognizing any of the internal input devices. A dialog box appears seeking keyboard and trackpad connections over bluetooth on the desktop after start up. I was able to work around this with a USB keyboard and mouse. What might be the problem?

sorry you say your built in trackpad.  and your built in keyboard.  reboot.  reset your pram.  maybe your smc

  • Macbook not recognizing USB ports from external monitor.

I have a Dell Monitor hooked up to the VGA port and have several items (printer, external hard drive) hooked into the ports on the Dell monitor. My Macbook is not recognizing the things that are plugged into the monitor.
These ports were working at one point but when I moved my setup and had to plug everything back in I can't get the USB ports on the monitor to work.
Along the same lines...I tried connecting the monitor to my laptop with a USB cable (female port from back of monitor to male port on Macbook) along with the VGA port. This did not fix the problem but I just wanted to know (had my laptop been recognizing the ports) if this was even necessary.
Since this setup has worked before I'm thinking it is something small that I am missing but any help would be appreciated.

  • Question re: MacBook not recognizing hard drive...

Question: When a MacBook is not recognizing it's hard drive, what are the basic steps one can take to fix?
Have been reading through the posts the past few hours, and do see information on this, but am wondering/hoping someone can simplify a bit for me? Am not very computer savvy...
Would so greatly appreciate any help

Boot from your Install DVD and go to Disk Utility and find the hard drive from there and repair it.
If DU can't find the HD then it's probably defective.

  • Sony Vaio Authentec Fingerprint Sensor Stops Working - USB Device not recognized

    Hey guys,
    Now here is my problem:
I have a Sony Vaio VPCSB3S9E with Authentec Fingerprint Reader.
Everything worked fine until 1 month ago when this started happening.
Whenever I push my laptop into sleep mode it came back but the Fingerprint log-on didn't work. I didn't pay any attention to it until it started popping up a notification message that a USB device is not recognized which in the end, proved out to be the
    fingerprint sensor.
Now, i tried rolling back the driver, uninstalling the driver, installing the driver/software from scratch, even installing the latest software from authentec before the site was unavailable and  nothing helped. I tried going through several threads
around here but with no luck.
It works up until a pint where it starts malfunctioning.
    Any help would be appreciated
I am running a Genuine Windows 7 x64 version with all updates installed up to date.

    Hi,
Please also check Device Manager if its driver works normally. In addition, check Event viewer about this events.
Actually, I doubt whether this is hardware problem, it would be better to contact Sony to make a test.

  • IPad not recognized within iBooks for Proofing

When you load an expanded/unzipped ePub folder with the .epub extension added into iBooks using the File/Advanced/Add ePub to Library as Proof option, you select the purple "Devices" button and within the header of your ePub proof window, you should see your tethered iPad as a selectable device to proof from. However, I have one Mac Pro station that will not recognize any iPad that is connected. Whereas, an exact duplicate workstation, with the exact same specs and software, can see the very same iPads and connect to them. Has anyone seen this problem? It seems to defy logic.
This problem has existed since the release of Yosemite, when Apple deprecated "BookProofer". If anyone has seen this issue and/or has solved it, it would be tremendously helpful to know the solution. The Apple iBooks team is currently working on the problem, but has not found the solution.

  • MacBook Pro 1,1. OS X 10.6.8 Trying to connect an Edirol FA-101 via FireWire, Macbook not recognizing device.

    Hello,
I'm trying to connect an Edirol FA-101 to my MacBook Pro. I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. Other fireWire devices and drives work on the port, but the Edirol is not showing up in Audio MIDI setup or anywhere. I've tried both DC power and Bus power on the Edirol. Did the SMC reset, flashed the PRAM. Reset Permissions in safe mode. Still nothing. The lights on the device show that it is on and connected, but in system profiler I get "Warning: Unable to list firewire devices."
    Any ideas?
    Josh

Hate to say it, but it sounds like the device has gone kaputt.

  • MacBook not recognizing HardDrive after freezing and crashing

This is the second time I had this problem since I bought my macbook (from the online apple store) at the start of August.
What happens the first time is that I leave to go do something and leave an application (such as Itunes) open on my computer long enough for the computer itself to go to sleep. Generally, this isn't a problem for me as I go for days without shutting down my computer (most recently for finals). But for these two times, (the first being in september), I come back to my computer to be greeted with a totally frozen machine. Though it will light up so I can see the screen and the mouse moves, I cannot close anything and commands will not work. after 15-20 minutes of waiting for the computer to recognize the quit command, I manually shut down the computer and let it sit for an hour or so.
Upon booting the machine back up, I am greeted with a blank gray screen that seems to go unchanged for a long time. Finally, I get a single folder icon with a question mark that flashes, stating that it cannot recognize the OS.
Now, the first time this happened, I was still under the phone service from the new purchase so I called applecare and spent close to an hour an a half with the rep on the other line and we tried dozens of ways to try and access the hard drive, none of them worked. He thought it might be soemthing with the hard drive connection itself so I sent the computer off to a repair store and recieved it back within a week, and I haven't had any complaints since. This was in september.
Tonight, I come back and my computer is frozen. I try everything I can to quit the programs open (itunes, ichat, word) and nothing works, so I force quit and wait an hour. I get the folder icon/question mark again, so i shut down the computer and wait two more hours. This time it boots up long enough for me to check my email and try working on a project in word. I go to open ichat and it freezes again. Now it is only presenting me with the folder/question icon.
The only thing that is similar between these two cases is that they both occured when I need my files the most for projects, and I would hope fate isn't against me. I tried to find some way to request a direct mail/pick up again on this site but I'm having trouble navigating it.
Has anyone else had this issue? The last time this happened, the invoice seemed to indicate that they replaced the cables and possibly some part of the motherboard and/or cpu (I had a hard time decifering the shorthand). I do not have my osX disc with me because I'm on Christmas Break and I left all my CD's at school. Does anyone have any suggestions with what to do? I am going to back up everything if it gives me a chance to, but I don't think whatever is wrong with it was fixed last time and I'm starting to think I have a faulty computer.
The only programs that start on startup (this site this may be a cause) is my alarm clock, Auroura, (sp) which takes little CPU space and even a smaller amount of ram.
    Suggestions? Other stories?

Thanks for the help, but nothing is working. Even when I had the disc and was online with Apple Support, nothing shows up. I cannot start the computer in safe mode, or in single user mode, or anything because it says that I don't have a hard drive so it recognizes nothing. When I had the disc and tried to use disk utility, it only gave the option of repairing the DVD itself, and said that there were no other drives present on the system.
I know of one other person who had this problem at my school, but his cleared up within the day. Mine doesn't seem to be doing that.
As far as my computer is concerned, it has ram, but no OS, and more importantly, nothing from which to get information off of.
This is my first Mac purchase, and the first time anyone I know has chosen a mac (with the exception of college friends). I love the operating system, and from what I've read on here ,the newest generation of Macbooks are much more stable, but I'm starting to get really frustrated with my computer dieing like it is. Hopefully I'll be able to run down to an apple store (the nearest is a little more than an hour away) and get it fixed again, but I don't want this to be a reoccuring problem, which it seems to be. Hopefully, if it is a hardware issue, they'll upgrade my computer accordingly. I can't afford to do so myself at the moment.

  • Canon printer into Time Capsule - works with macbook not imac - why?

    Hi all,
This has been up in the iMac section for a couple of days and no one has replied. I thought I'd post it in here as people with TC's may have come across this and know how to fix it. I originally thought it was an iMac fault - perhaps it still is! Anyway I hope I've not broken any rules by posting it in here, when its already else where, if so apologies in advance.
I have both an iMac and a MacBook Pro (3 weeks old). I also have a time capsule and have plugged my Canon iP4500 into the USB port on the TC. I had, before getting the macbook, the printer printing wirelessly, with all the functionality that it should have using the airport on my iMac and the TC. Then after an upgrade of OS X, it suddenly stopped working wirelessly. I can not get it to work, no matter what I try - I've reset the printer settings in system prefs, reinstalled the drivers from the Canon web site, re-setting the TC - nothing works.
However it does work from my MacBook Pro! It has the same OS X version, the same printer drivers downloaded from the same site.
Obviously I'd like both computers to be able to print wirelessly - not sure what's going on with the iMac.
All help is very very appreciated.

I thought I'd search the hard disk and remove all files, drivers et al that I could find relating to the printer. Then reinstalled the up to date driver from the Canon website. (If I knew how / if it possible to post a screen grab of the printer window I would - so I've made a new page on my website - you can see screen grabs at: http://web.me.com/timhydes/Site/CanoniP4500_printerissues.html ).
This time the printer window pops us as per usual, then in the top half section where it shows the icon, the name of the file it should be printing, but underneath it says "No pages found!", in the status table in the bottom half it says "Printing" (see screen grab 1). If I leave it for a while, it changes the top half to "Printer Ready" and the status menu says "Stopped" (see screen grab 3).
If I click on hold, then resume I get a new window which says: "Operation Count not be completed" "client-error-not-possible" (see screen grab 2).
I've checked that there is printer ink, paper et al, and it still prints from my MacBook.
I wondered it this may shed some light on the issue from those more knowledgeable than my self.
    Many Thanks
    Tim
