Web gallery on-going frustration

I've been using lightroom since the beta, and have been fighting the web galleries since day one. I'll refrain from venting and get right to the questions.
I managed to hack 1.2 (by editing the HTML file in the template buried in the package) to implement a style, branding, and menus that match an existing branded website, but 1.4 has evidently introduced new .lua and .lrtemplate file formats that no longer appear to give me access directly to the HTML to hack (which I'd rather not do inside the app anyway).
Also, I've had to manually create a master thumbnail page that links to each individual gallery, which is a real pain.
So, here's my questions:
1) Is there a nice, clean, customizable multiple gallery solution out there? In particular one that doesn't install anything on the server, and doesn't require building a thumbnail page manually or manually editing files (i.e. updating xml) each time I add a gallery?
2) Where is documentation on how to modify the new format existing templates to support inclusion in a branded website (is that even possible any longer)? In other words, I want to unbundle the existing templates and edit them in Dreamweaver to add a standard logo and menu bar so that each generated gallery automatically includes them.
3) Alternatively, are there third-party fully customizable templates available? SlideShowPro is not.
Thanks!
Doug

Given the limitations and lack of flexibility of the LR built-in galleries, you might want to just do a temporary export and use a separate Web Gallery tool that does the job better for you. After all, web galleries tend to be relatively small in the number of images that they contain, so an export doesn't add much time to the process.
Master thumbnails are typically required unless you use a server based gallery system, because stand-lone galleries are not aware of each other. If you have a website, your host probably offers "Fantastico", which will setup one of several server hosted galleries for you.
Web hosting services, such as Zenfolio, can take care of full gallery management, but they are not very customizable.
In the end, setting up a fully custom website, the way that you want it to look, probably will require lots and lots of manual coding and linking.

  • The Elusive Web Gallery Albums

    I have my iPhone, I have iLife 08, I have made several galleries, the two I want to use with my iPhone both have the send by email and allow to upload. On my phone when I select a picture then tap Send to Web Gallery it goes to the new page with Web Gallery Albums on the top and a cancel button. Below that is the words loading and the spinning track ball. I have let it sit for hours, I have restored even and still not one gallery shows up. Anyone have any ideas? and yes my .mac account is listed in the email section.

    Does anyone have an idea?

    Am logged in to Creative Cloud, have saved a web gallery, and am trying to publish first web gallery.  Consistently get the same message, 'An error occurred sending the file : connection to the server failed'.  Can somebody help me to resolve this?

    Firstly, have you entered the correct FTP settings as given by the host where you are uploading to?
    Next, try using Export and then uploading via an external FTP program like Filezilla. FTP from Lightroom isn't as robust as a dedicated FTP program.

  • Cannot publish album to web gallery, nor to iweb

    today, I tried publishing an album to my web gallery and iphoto "quit unexpectedly" then (after the relaunch), I tried going to preferences, which caused it to quit again. nothing I do seems to resolve this (I've restarted, and have also tried deleting the prefs file - numerous times).
    then I tried to send the album to iweb - and iweb "quit unexpectedly" as well. even worse, now iWeb won't even launch! (keep getting the "quit unexpectedly" error. (I've tried deleting the prefs file for iweb and iapps as well, to no avail.)
    otherwise, iphoto works fine - it's just when trying to send to iweb, publishing to web gallery, or accessing the preferences that it freezes (and quits).
    the last time I tried coordinating these apps (and publishing to my web gallery) was a month ago, and everything worked perfectly. could this be related to a bug in a recent software update?
    can anyone help me figure out what's wrong? I'm terribly frustrated...
    thanks!

    Thanks for the link, I just installed the update and rebooted. Unfortunately, the problem persists!
    iWeb does not launch at all - I get an 'opening' message, then the "quit unexpectedly" error message appears. here's first part of the report:

    (The irony here is that I used DreamWeaver/Photoshop/ftp upoaders to design and publish my previous sites and, as a new mom, thought I'd save time by taking advantage of Apple's seamless (albeit boxed) software to make a simple and easily-updatable photo site for my daughter. This was supposed to make my life easier! )

  • Web Gallery Images Don't Show Up On Web

    I am very new to Lightroom, but have been using Dreamweaver and Photoshop for quite a while now. I took about 10 pictures that I wanted to be on a test web gallery, brought them into Lightroom as their own collection, selected them all and went to the Web tab at the top, HTML Gallery was selected by default and I left everything else at the defualt, just to see what I could get working. I then went to Export, and it export to a folder called 'gallery' on my desktop. I then went to the 'gallery' folder on my desktop, and inside there was a file called 'index.html'. I opened it, and the gallery loaded perfectly with all of the images showing.
    Then, I selected the gallery folder and opened my FTP client, and uploaded the entire folder to my web server, whose domain is, let's say, test.com. I then went to test.com/gallery, and the gallery loaded but without any of the pictures. The outlines of the cells are fine, the defualt text all came up, but in every cell where an image should be, there is a little image missing icon in the top-left corner. This is the same in all browsers, and I have tried using the different kinds of galleries (Flash, etc.) but they all have the same sort of problem. The flash gallery specifically just says 'Loading' and hangs there, even though when running off of my desktop it works just fine.
    In addition, I have tried configuring Lightroom's built-in FTP uploader to upload directly instead of exporting and then uploading, but that had the same results.
    I have attached a picture which will show the difference between when it is on my desktop and when it is on the web.
    Is there something I'm missing? Is there a file I'm supposed to rename for when it goes onto the web? I made sure that none of the folders I had the pictures in, none of the collections, and none of the names of the pictures themselves had spaces or punctuation so that it wouldn't mess up any coding that Lightroom would try to automate. I'm not familiar with the Lightroom settings and would really appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks.

    Well, I re-read what was said in that forum and made those changes. I'm not quite sure what the SDK was for in this case, I just went to the folder, right clicked, and opened the files I needed to edit with Notepad. Then I edited, saved, re-opened Lightroom, re-exported, re-uploaded, and...drumroll...it worked perfectly.
    Thank you all very much for your help. I had been using the Trial version of Lightroom, but after reviewing all of the other features and, finally, getting the web gallery feature to work just fine, I think I'm going to purchase it!
    I'm going to send in a feature request through the little option on the side of this Forum page, and request that either those options be used by default (I just had my friend upload them to his Unix server and it worked fine on his), or that there should be an option to choose what type of server you're using. I don't think a user should have to edit program files, especially for something so simplistic. Thanks again.

  • Font selection view control in Web Gallery

    LR4.1 RC2
    I wanted to be able to change the font type from the UI panel using a font select popup.
    This control really only seems to exist in the inbuilt edit modes (eg: id plate and watermark) so I have tried a workround which seems to work OK so far. Maybe it will help someone else out working with webengines.
    Mac/OSX only at this stage - good source file in Windows may be font.inf but would require a bit of parsing or get a folder listing somehow.
    Basically I read in the contents of the fonts.list file - which appears in the OSX fonts folders - and then massage the contents to get a raw list of the fonts.
    This raw list is then read into a lua table and consumed by the UI popup control.
    Should there be an obvious way that I haven't seen then just give me time to find a banana to eat ... anyway here goes -
    Changing the font type for the cell index numbers.
    Grid cells use cellIndex to give the photo number and in my webengine the css class is .itemNumber
    Data Model references -   Note:   %s is important for select to work - if %q is used select will work but font won't change ( %q adds quotes to the string ).
                ["appearance.itemNumber.font"] = function() return string.format( "%s", nonCSS.itemNumberFontSize .. "px " .. nonCSS.itemNumber.font ) end,
                ["nonCSS.itemNumberFontSize"] = 60,
                ["nonCSS.itemNumber.font"] = "inherit",
                fontlistpath = LrPathUtils.child('/Library/Fonts','')    -- OSX Default fonts
    Code just prior to LR UI Views -
            deffonts = templatepath .. "/pgresources/" .. 'osxdeffont.txt'      -- templatepath is the root path of the webengine - this is the tweaked OSX fonts.list file
            function readFontsFile( deffonts )
                local fileLines = io.lines( deffonts )
                ff3 = {}
                for line in io.lines(deffonts) do
    Filter lines here ...
    eg:   -
                    line = string.sub(line, 17)   -- remove 1st 16 chrs        (/Library/Fonts//Osaka.ttf)
                    line = string.gsub(line, "(.ttf)", "")
                    local kline = line
                       local vline = line
                       table.insert(ff3, { title =  kline ,value = vline })
                end
            end
    LR UI View for font select -
                f:popup_row {
                    title = "Font family :",
                    bindingValue = "nonCSS.itemNumber.font",
                    items =  ff3,
                    bindingEnabled = "appearance.itemNumber.display",   -- control should be disabled if display checkbox false
                    tooltip = "Choose wisely Dave!",
    Using this method is not perfect but gives a good selection of fonts - I found that to improve the success rate the default font file was copied into the webengine
    resources folder and tweaked. eg:  the default file gives Brush Script.ttf but I needed Brush Script MT to work, similarly with Arial Rounded Bold which needed changing
    to Arial Rounded MT Bold
    Basically to find the correct descriptions you could do far worse than to use the ones in the edit selections used by the ID Plate/watermarking features.
                Well there you go ...
    As an aside I did try an undocumented control which on double click popped up a system font selection dialog (the whole nine yards) but  couldn't get it to link to the css class so I didn't persist - not a good idea to use undocumented controls but can be fun to play with.
        f:font_picker {
            font = "Copperplate",     -- showed font as highlighted when picker opened.
            width = 80,
            value = "Arial",    -- appeared on control (title ??) - this value only changed according to the font selected after double-clicking on another hidden control (f:image_well)
            bindingValue = "nonCSS.itemNumber.font",  -- linkage didn't work
    Again, unless I missed it, it would be really good to have the font_picker documented and working for the web gallery views.  Fonts seem to be a murky area -
    probably accounts for the hassles I am getting with the watermarking feature as well.
    Update :
    If the font doesn't work try using the PostScript name as a value which invariably works.
    eg: Handwriting - Dakota  will not work but Handwriting-Dakota will.
         Arial Bold will not work but Arial-BoldMT will.

    I don't think that there is any option to set the default view in the web album. If anyone has found an option to do this, then I will like to know as well.
    Quite a lot of the settings in web album seams to be "hard coded" and only a few settings are available for users to control.

  • Customizing Photoshop Web Gallery in Dreamweaver

    HOW DO I STOP WIDTH OF IMAGE FROM STRETCHING? (height is in
    proportion)
    more details:
    I've almost finished customizing a Photoshop web gallery in
    Dreamweaver, which is completely confusing for me (i'm a novice)
    and any head way i made in changing the template was mainly from
    trial and error as it is very unclear in the instrutions on how to
    edit.
    I finally have a template that is starting to look the way I
    want with the thumbnails at the bottom in an iframe and with the
    larger image above with arrows on either side. I edited it so the
    only thing that's changed in size on the image is the Height so the
    width can change automatically.
    When the practice gallery I made first opens I've got it
    displaying each photo for 4 seconds then going to the next, there's
    also the option to pause. While it's playing when it first opens
    everything looks fine, the image sizes are right the height is
    correct and there's no stretching. BUT as soon as I click on a
    thumbnail at the bottom it decides to stretch the width of the
    image to fit the table, and then every image after in the slide
    show is also stretched. Even if i pause the slides and select a
    different image thumb it displays the streched image and not the
    proper proportioned image that is displayed when the page is first
    opened.
    Anyone know how to fix this??????
    Any help at all would be appreciated.
    Thank you.

  • How to add Web Gallery captions in Bridge CS5

    I am creating a photo album (web gallery) in Bridge CS5 but there doesn't seem to be a way to add captions to the photos. I don't want the File Names to appear, I want to be able to choose several photos to have captions which I will type in. Is there a way to do this? The web gallery template I am using is Left Filmstrip.
    Thanks!

    Will the Airtight template let you put in a separate caption for EACH photo, or just one caption that goes on every single slide?
    What third party software would let me add captions...I need something fairly easy to use.
    Thanks!

  • Windows 7 64 bit Dreamweaver CC 2014 & Lightroom 5: Trying to insert a lightroom web gallery into a template in Dreamweaver

    I am using a template for my website in Dreamweaver CC 2014. I installed a lightroom 5 web gallery into the template. I have an editable region where my main content goes that is where I inserted the web gallery. The main content css height is set at Auto. The web gallery shows up but only the very top half of the gallery. The whole web gallery wont push down the main content section so you can see the whole gallery. If I set the main content at height 700px then the whole gallery shows up, but because this is a template it screws up all my other pages because of the height setting. I need that to be variable. What am I doing wrong?

    Most likely that main content area also contains a floated element and you are not clearing the float before closing the main content container. Floated elements are removed from the normal flow. Being removed from the normal flow means that a container for that floated element does not regard the floated element as being in it, and will collapse around its non-floated content. To prevent this from happening you should clear the float before closing the container, e.g.,
    <div>
    <img src="very-tall-image.jpg" style="float:left">
    <p>some content</p>
    </div>
    This div will only be as tall as the paragraph tag requires, thus truncating the image.
    But here -
    <div>
    <img src="very-tall-image.jpg" style="float:left">
    <p>some content</p>
    <div style="clear:left;"></div>
    </div>
    This div will show the whole image.

  • Web gallery file size...do I have this straight?

    I've read through the posts so far. I'm new to LR (waiting for my package to arrive, so still using the trial).
    I set up a collection of 57 photos.  Most were raw, the largest being 167,866 KB.  (kinda large)  I tried to upload from LR (thinking maybe it doesn't work in the trial version as I kept getting errors of one kind or another?) and found the total of the files was over 176,000,000 KB.  Hmmm.  So, I went back into PhotoShop CS3 (after another program that usually will batch convert files didn't work) and saved each with 800 ppi maximum on a side, and saved them all for the web. (That took a little time, but not too bad.) Then I had to import the new .jpg folder, and re-edit each photo to maximize their exposure and such.
    Must I do that every time I want to post a web gallery?  In other words, I'll have to keep the original (larger) files, and make a smaller set for web plublishing, and convert everything to a .jpg file as well?  (I suppose there's no sense in filling my server with photos that are much larger than necessary, but it seems like a lot of extra work.)
    Also notice, if I have to start again (it is taking a long time, but then it's my first attempt), the collection I've saved has all the Identity plates and information I've typed in going back to Lightroom defaults, and the order of the photos goes back to random (after I've meticulously tried to put them in order).  Hoping this is just because I'm using the trial again, but no way to know until the box comes in a few days (I hope).
    The feature that caused me to make this purchase is the ability to do these galleries.  I've been looking at templates, modifying them, and working on doing this, for quite some time now. When I saw it's just part of LR...WOW!  I did get excited!  What a useful and wanted feature!!!
    It's more than one question, I know, but I've so many more!  Will the learning every become adequate to do what I dream?  (This last question is rhetorical, by the way.)
    OMGoodness! I thought I saved the gallery in the Collections...clicked on it, and no pics, nothing I did (for the second time) seems to be anywhere.  I have a LONG way to go in learning to use this tool correctly!  Arghhhh!  ... Last revision...went back into the folder, and everything is there.  Wow!  Guess I don't need it in a Collection.  Awesome!

    These files were scanned. I'm sorry, I forgot that.  They're old pics.  Some were in .jpg format, but most were in .psd format.  I converted them to smaller files in the Save for Web Device in Photoshop.  My next gallery will be shots from my Nikon D200, and I checked...the files are about the same size as yours.  These scanned files were considerably bigger as the film was pretty old.  Did quite a few of them previously to last night, and used a dpi (or is it ppi) of higher than 300 I did the last ones in. File size varied from 1,201 KB to 16.765 KB. (That bigger one was a 5X8 school shot.)
    Will it normally send the files to the web full size and then just use the dimensions specified in the program?  I have to check how much space I have on the server, but I do have another gallery I want to make, and I found a great plugin (here on the forum) to add mp3 music to the gallery. (I know, more space, but love it!)  I figured 800 pixels on the longest side would be plenty adequate for viewing, and the gallery parameters are smaller, so that's fine.
    One thing I don't understand, it asked me to place the files in "photos," but I don't think it uploaded a folder of "photos" to the web.  However, it's obvious the files went.  I was afraid if I used the export, I was going to have to upload the folder with my photo files to the server, but I think it handled that.  I hope I get a user manual with my boxed product.  It can't come soon enough!  LOL
    By the way, I successfully posted the gallery tonight.  It's really great, and my son loved it.    I am SO thrilled with this program!!!

  • .Mac Web Gallery - Limit to photos per gallery?

    Is there a limit to how many photos you can have in any one gallery? I've dedicated 5 GB to my .Mac web gallery and have published 10 or so galleries totaling approximately 700 MB. There is one project that I want to make into a gallery that is 307 photos. However EVERY time I try to publish this in Aperture 2 it immediately publishes but always with 0 versions (i.e. photos) inside. In fact it shows in Aperture 2 but on my site it does not even show up as a gallery.
    Anyone else experiencing this?
    -Keith

    Okay thank you Joe. I am trying to figure out why one of my galleries will not publish. It is 307 photos, about 900 MB (original size) and I'm trying to publish optimized photos with 5.2 GB free on .Mac. Very frustrating!!!

  • IWeb Link to Web gallery

    Hi everyone, my question is, is there a way to create a web gallery link in the link header of iWeb? I find this confusing that web gallery and iWeb don't have an option to link up. The gallery in iWeb is good, but don't have the same features that web gallery does. Since it is all hosted in the same place, it should be easy. I have HTML links in my blog now for it, but it isn't global. I have to insert an HTML link in each post. Any help would be great.
    Thanks.
    Jim

    well i suppose the way it's meant to be done is to make a new blank page (calling it web gallery or whatever), press web widget and put in your web gallery albums one by one. each album has a little mini slideshow going on (and skims) and clicking on that takes you to the web gallery album proper. the problem (as far as i'm concerned) is that by making the web widgets you are making your own web gallery index page which is not as nice as the actual web gallery index page which you are bypassing.
    or you could make a blank page (again calling it web gallery or whatever), leave it blank, publish it, and then edit the code so that it diverts straight to your web gallery index page. i don't know how to write code so i just copied the code on the index page and changed the destination to the web gallery address rather than the welcome page. this seems to work well. and if you know what you're doing i suppose to could also get the web gallery to open in another browser window.
    or you could make a blank page (again calling it web gallery or whatever), and insert an html widget with code to divert to the web gallery. the difficulty with this is then when someone clicks on web gallery (or whatever you have called it) in the navigation menu, you then see the blank page for a fraction of a second.
    anyway, i don't really know what i'm doing....i'm just trying stuff out!

  • Web Gallery, iWeb, and iPhone

    I just added a web gallery preview to my iWeb site. When I view it on my iPhone, there is a lego looking block with a ? in it. It won't show the preview of the web gallery. There is also no link to actually look at the pictures. Does anyone know if I am doing something wrong or if that is how it is supposed to be?

    I wouldn't think it would flash as they know that the iPhone can't handle flash. It's kind of frustrating that one thing from the company doesn't work with another part of it.

  • No photo names in Web Gallery

    I just uploaded a web gallery (password protected) and after going to the trouble of putting names on all the photos in iPhoto (prior to the upload) was disappointed to see none in my corresponding web gallery.
    What gives?

    Click on the Setting button in the toolbar for your gallery and make sure you have the option to include titles checked.
    Hint: You can put the description of the photos in the description field in the Info pane at the bottom of the source window and then use this script to batch copy them to the Name field before publishing the gallery. Then when you want to revert back to the original file name just use the Photos->Batch Change->Title to File Name.
    Do you Twango?
    TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
    I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

    Is there any way to set the default view in a web gallery? For instance, when someone goes to the site, can you have it default to come up in "carousel view"?
