Webcam video recording bandwidth

hi all,
When capturing a webcam feed using FMS - is there any loss of
information during the upload process?
If my client has a limited uplink (for instance a poor DSL
uplink bandwidth) - does the resulting FLV file will suffer from
lost frames etc.? (is RTMP reliable or lossy)
If not lossy- how does it works?? does Flash client buffer
the recorded webcam feed on the client (because of the upload
limitations)?
where can I find more formal information about this (searched
FMS docs with no luck),
thx,
Chen.

Yes... the Flashplayer will drop frames if the client's
connection to the server isn't fast enough. You can set the amount
of data that is bufferred on the client (see the FMS docs about the
client side netstream buffer), but if the buffer fills and can't
empty out to the server, you'll start losing frames.
As I understand things, audio takes precidence over video, so
video frames will drop before audio data is dropped.
What you might want to do is test your client's connection
speeds (you can do that with FMS), and then employ a little dynamic
bitrate/framerate control in your client side AS. That way, you can
ensure that the client doesn't try to transmit more data than their
internet pipe can handle, and you won't lose and data.

I'm pretty sure you can only do that if you have Flash Media

  • Webcam Video pauses when recording sound from microphone

I have a strange problem which i am encountering when recording and playing back webcam video.
I am developing a small application for recording webcam video and audio using FMS and playing it back later from FMS.
I am using AS 3.0, FMS 3.5 and flash CS 5.5
When i record only the video from webcam without sound from microphone the playback is fine. But when i record microphone sound also along with the video, and when i playback the video pauses right where the sound starts for 10 sec or more and then it starts playing. Towards the end the video pauses again and only the sound goes on till the end.
I tried setting the buffertime to 50 before ns.publish and ns.play but that didnt help either.
I tried using the flvplayback component and even their it pauses.
    Any help is appreciated.

Haha, that is such a genius use of common sense! Thank you, I didn't think of that. I certainly will!
However, does anyone know if there is a way of adjusting the program of garageband to fix this issue? Using headphones certainly fixes the symptoms of my problem, but it doesn't actually address the root cause: garageband should only be recording the input through the microphone. I shouldn't need to wear headphones. (And doing so inhibits my ability to clearly hear myself play, and stay in tune.)

  • Satellite C665 - Win 7 - Webcam application - "Record Video Failed"

Toshiba C665 - If that matters.
    Windows 7
I have a problem whenever I try to use the recording function on the program "Web Camera Application".
The blue camera light on my laptop turns off, the program goes black and a message box reads "Record Video Failed". If I press ok it returns to the original screen where I can see myself.
I do not get this problem using the Photo function.

    Hi
Did you try to reinstall this application to check if this would solve the video recording problem?
    Do that!
The webcam software can be found on the Toshiba EU driver page.

  • Recording modified webcam videos

    Hi there,
Is there a possibility - instead of attaching a camera [via
ns.attachcamera()] to a netstream - to "attach" e.g. BitmapData to
netstream. The reason is, that I use BitmapData's .draw method to
get the webcam video in order to change it, such as with the
.treshold method. And I want to record and save these altered
bitmaps (as a video) on the FMS instead the original webcam video.
This URL gives a good example what I mean!! ...
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flash/articles/webcam_motion.html
Two videos are shown, the left one is the original from the
webcam, the right one the "modified" video. Only the modified video
shall be recorded via the netstream .publish method.
    Thanks for any help.

Hope someone answers you.... I have the exact same question.

  • Webcam video streaming question

    Hello,
Before I buy the Flash Media Server, i would like to know that:
    - is it possible to crop the webcam video (because I need just one part of the whole picture) before streaming from the client's Flash Player to the Media Server? (it would reduce the bandwidth a lot)
    - if not, can the player store some parts of video until it is fully streamed with all it's data (30 fps) to the Server? (e.g: client: low bandwidth, i need all frames that the webcam records, real-time doesn't matter if it takes 1 minutes for 20sec video, that would be ok.
    Thanks,
    Peter

It is not possible to crop the video in the flashplayer. You can use the Camera.setMode method with the favorArea flag set to true to force an unsuppored resolution, but that often results in lowered image quality.
You can't store video locally, but you can increase the buffer in efforts to minimize frame drops (see the bufferTime property of the netstream class). When using a publishing buffer, the Flashplayer will only start dropping frames when the buffer is full. I've never tried using a buffer of more than 10 seconds on a publishing stream, so I don't know if there is an upward limit (nothing in the docs about that). That said, if the user does not have sufficient bandwidth to publish in real time, frames will start dropping eventually... no way to completely avoid that AFAIK, other than reducing the publishing bitrate.

  • Error when starting new video recording

When I try to start a new video recording I receive the following error:
The operation couldn’t be completed. (OSStatus error -536870206.)
I am using Quicktime Pro on an iMac running Mac OS X 10.6.5. Quicktime will work with iSight but not with my PS3 eye (usb webcam). I am able to choose the PS3 eye from Quicktime preferences and the video screen will show up with video from the PS3 eye (so I know that Quicktime recognizes the cam). But the error dialogue box appears immediately.
Other information - I am using macam.component for Quicktime and the PS3 eye works perfectly with Macam.
Has anyone received this error before?

I have not, but I do not use PS3 eye. If it is a "UVC" (usb video class) device, it should work with any Mac running Mac OS X 10.4.9 or later _without additional software drivers_. Some unnecessary drivers can conflict with your Mac's software.
If desired, you can remove the file macam.component from /Library/QuickTime and restart Mac to see if the PS3 eye can work with QuickTime without the additional driver.

  • No sound while video recording on N500!

Hello! I just bought Lenovo 3000 N500 for my sister who is in Germany...I want to check everything on laptop, because I want her to use it to skype me...Everything is lovely, except I can't get sound while video recording...Is it possible this laptop has a webcam, but no integrated microphone? But  when I  go and use windows sound recorder that comes with Vista it records audio...But I can't get video to work with audio recording in the same time...Anybody there with a solution? Thank you , people!

    Same problem. Here's my solution:
For now i record video using an app calle "Video FX Live". It records sounds clearly. Native iphone app still doesnt records any sound.
So this proves the sound issues during video recording or facetime IS an IOS BUG.

  • IMac built in camera for video recording.

The I mac I purchased last year has a built in cam.I would like to know if I can do a short video recording using this cam.I know this is mostly used as a webcam, however I would like to know if I can do a recording on it.If so how to go about? Will the recording be like a webcam recording (not in full flow but cartoon like) or will it be  like recording on a handycam, atleast to an extent? I dont want the discontinuity woth short pauses inbetween, that we see on webcams.

You can see if you like it by using PhotoBooth's video function, the film looking icon to the left of the record button.

  • Quicktime - New Video Recording using Canon HV30 - Codec?

I'm using Quicktime Pro 7.4.1 with a Canon HV30 connected via firewire. In Quicktime preferences pane, the HV30 is the video source with "Device Native" as the Quality setting. Though, I can't see a preview in the Quicktime window while recording, it does appear to record footage. When I stop the recording, it says that I don't have the codec to view the footage and sends me to the Quicktime plug-in page on this site, but I have no idea what I need.
Considering some of the codecs (if not all of them) cost money, I'd rather not buy something that won't fix my problem. Anyone have any ideas?
EDIT: Oh yeah, the camera is set to HDV 1080i60 video standard. When I switch the camera to SDV, the Quicktime preview returns and everything works as expected.

  • Presenter 8 video record fails to work with firewire camcorder

Tried to record with camcorder connected via firewire. Presenter video creator crashed. Poor results for a highly anticipated "upgrade". Problem with installed "Adobe-Pr-VC.exe" app. Wish that Adobe would test their products instead of having us doing their Quality Control. But, I guess this is what they would describe as being a "feature". Glad I'm finding all these problems during the "trial" period.

    Hello Bill,
I reported a similar issue on August, 9 :  "Presenter 8 crashes after connecting external Firewire cam"
The lack of support for FireWire connections is making the product less usefull than I tought it would. We also record conferences and corporate training presentations, and recording the speaker with just a low quality webcam is not always the best option (limited options of framing, zooming, panning, tilting, following the speaker ... they are not always standing on the same spot ).
Being in the "trial" period still, I digitized and copied a pre-recorded videofile of a recent presentation on my PC and tried to synchronize it with the PowerPoint presentation, but then I found out that I need to split up my complete recording in as many individual pieces of video as the amount of slides the speaker presents. Presenter only allows to import and synchronize one videofile with one particular slide. This type of post-processing is time-consuming and inefficient.
I also can't ask the trainer to do his/her presentation in a classroom first before an audience, and then repeat the whole presentation again afterwards in front of his/her webcam to record it to make it available for people who couldn't attend the session.
That is why the connection of an external camera or recorder is a necessity. There is nothing as easy and efficient as having a camera at the back of the class or conference room, and synchronize the camera image with the PowerPoint slides in real-time, while the speaker is presenting the slides before an audience. We simply don't have the time to go through a time consuming post-processing cycle by cutting the recorded presentation into several individual videofiles and importing them into the individual slides, or asking the speaker to repeat the presentation for the 2nd time in front of a webcam.  Time is Money.
I also found out that only presentations recorded in real-time with a webcam (via the RECORD button on the toolbar) gives me the possibility to upload the presentation to YouTube. When using the possibility to import a videofile to a slide via the Presenter toolbar (Video --> import), it only gives me the possibility to publish to My Computer (or network), to Adobe Connect or to a PDF-file.  No YouTube publishing possibility here anymore.
    Why not, Adobe ?
Company policy to only connect to the proprietary Adobe Connect platform?
    That is a real pitty.
I really don't understand Adobe's policy to not support FireWire appliances in Presenter 8.  This would open so many possibilities for the product.
FireWire support is nothing new for Adobe. I'm an Adobe Premiere user for more than a decade, I use Adobe Flash Media Live Encoder to stream training sessions, conferences, etc ... and all these products support FireWire without any problem.
Don't tell me that the Adobe team needs to start studying for months how to connect a FireWire camera or recorder to its Presenter 8 software.
I hope they will investigate how they can solve this flaw as quickly as possible.
In the meanwhile, I guess, I will let the trial period pass and might consider purchasing the product once this issue has been solved.

  • Finding webcam video

Hello Mr. Romano: Since the Oct.20,2013  1:45 PM reply from you I have been very happy. After yesterday not so much. I edited my Logitech webcam video and when I was finished for the day I clicked File and clicked SAVE AS. I normaly click SAVE but I thought SAVE AS would be safer. Well the name of the file changed from George Bio. #1 WMV to George Bio. #1 PREL.When I load it into Premier  Elements 10 the monitor and all the panels in the Sceneline and Timeline are a dark red. They used to be a yellow color and it worked. Now I can click on the (red) monitor start arrow and the timer runs but nothing shows. There is a George Bio. #1 WMV icon in the Organizer but the computer cannot activate it. Do I have to start all over or can this be fixed? Also can you please advise. If I make a new video and run it thru  Windows Movie Maker and get a video with George Bio. #1 WMV , what should be the correct New Project settings? The webcam records in HD 1080.  Thank you for any help.    George

    George
Let us start with the last question
If I make a new video and run it thru  Windows Movie Maker and get a video with George Bio. #1 WMV , what should be the correct New Project settings? The webcam records in HD 1080.
You will need to check this out, but it looks like your webcam video is 1080p30 (that is 1920 x 1080 @ 30 progressive frames per second). If you imported that into Windows Movie Maker and wanted to export it as 1080p30, when you got to Save Movie,
    a. first see what the program wants to give you under Recommended Settings...if it looks like 1080p30, go with that setting.
    b. if Recommended Settings did not look correct, then go down the list to where it says Create Custom Setting and do just that, making sure to include in your custom setting
    Frame Width 1920
    Frame Height 1080
Frame Rate 30 frames per second
Now if you wanted to take the export 1080p30 wmv file and import that into Premiere Elements 10, then
    a. Set the Premiere Elements 10 project preset = NTSC/DSLR/1080p/DSLR 1080p30
    b. Then use Get Media/Files and Folders to bring your 1080p30 wmv into the project.
Now for this saving matter....lots of possibilities...
Given you had the George Bio #1. wmv on the Timeline of your Premiere Elements 10 project (this project otherwise known as a project file named project.prel). What you have is a Premiere Elements 10 project which includes a copy of your wmv video file (not the original) that traces back to the original on the hard drive.
When you opened the new project, the save for that project was set in the new project dialog where you set the project preset. The project (project.prel) with the video inside it is found in the new project dialog save location.  And that is where the saved closed project would be automatically when you saved closed the project.
However, you decided to Save As before the Save or in place of the Save, two leading possibilities are:
    a. you over wrote the original project prel file
    b. you now have a version of that project.prel in two different places
In all this, you should not have lost the original George Bio#1 WMV. That should be on the computer hard drive where you saved it before Premiere Elemens entered into all this.
Do you remember changing the file name and/or location for the project.prel when you did the Save As?
Let us start here and then see what we can put together to get beyond these setbacks.
Minor setback. We will be back on track again.

  • Poor video recording quality with Presenter 9

    I'm trialling Presenter 9 and Captivate 7.
I have a Compaq CQ61-320SA latop with a 2.2 Ghz dual core processor and 8 Gb RAM. It's 3 or 4 years old. The Display Adaptor entry in Device Manager says it has Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset Family (Microsoft) and the driver is up to date. (I should say that HP's product spec page for my laptop says that 'Video Graphics - NVIDIA GeForce 8200M G which confuses me as Device manager is listing it as Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset Family?)
When I record full screen in Presenter (it seems you are restricted to full screen recording in Presenter, unlike in Captivate), the resulting MP4 is rendered in high quality. The fonts in the video look nice and sharp. However, if I import the video into Powerpoint with the Adobe Presenter add in and then publish it to a folder on my PC with the 'lossless' setting and then click on the file 'index.html' the playback quality in my browser (Internet Explorer 11) is much lower. The fonts look 'blocky'.
I don't think it can be PC specification because if I record full screen in Captivate 7 and import the MP4 file into a new project and publish it, the quality of the published slide is great. (Again, I click on  the 'index.html' file to play the published video).
Does this mean that Presenter is not as good as Captivate in terms of its video recording quality? Are the encoding engines different?
I love the webcam PIP functionality and simplicity of Presenter but the seemingly low video quality versus Captivate is an issue for me.
    Any ideas/thoughts would be appreciated.
    Peter

After playing with Presenter more, I've come to the conclusion that the degradation in quality from the original MP4 video file (that Presenter generates with its video creator tool) to the reduced quality after importing the MP4 into PowerPoint and publishing the course to HTML is probably due to a scaling issue. I've read elsewhere on this forum and on the Camtasia forum that whenever you re-scale a video, you lose clarity. The fact is that Presenter only allows recording of the entitre screen. When you import a full screen recording into a PowerPoint slide, because the slide itself is of a size lower than full screen, the original full screen dimension in the video is scaled down.
I'm thinking that the higher specification graphics card in the new laptop I talked about in the previous post produces a higher quality MP4 video in the first place so that the effect of the scaling down when imported into PowerPoint is more acceptable.
    Any comments?
    Peter
