Webintelligence reports or Crystal reports? what to use?
An end-user asked me: why should I create Webintelligence reports, can't I use Crystal reports too? What's the difference between them?
I didn't know what to answer... what kind of users should use Webintelligence and what kind of users should use Crystal reports? Do you consider Crystal reports too complicated for a normal end-user?
What's the purpose of each one?
hi PadawanGirl,
there's a lot of differences between the 2 tools so it really depends on what the end user experience is, how much data manipulation is required, and the amount of formatting required.
if you want an ad hoc tool where the end user creates reports (or edits existing reports) with tables and charts and there's not too much data manipulation / high level formulas, then consider web intelligence.
if you're looking to build formatted reports with more complexity and you require more in a formula editor, then consider crystal. i would recommend anyone that is just starting out to design crystal reports to take a course as there's a lot there to learn. you can also design simpler reports though so don't let that scare you off.
[here's a guide|http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/index?rid=/library/uuid/d00ae0a1-8086-2d10-118c-f35b8e604bc4] that can help you decide as well.
here are a couple of samples of some crystal reports that we have running live on the experience.sap.com site:
1) [football analytic|http://experience.sap.com/eurofootball/opendoc.html] > click on any of the matches to go to a report output to pdf
2) [tennis|http://experience.sap.com/OpenDocument/opendoc/sso.jsp?&docid=376915&drilldowntabs=hide&sReportMode=weblayout&sType=rpt&toolbar=hide]
3) [clean energy|http://experience.sap.com/experience/html/Pages/egrid/pdf/egridinfo_6u.pdf]
we don't unfortunately have any webi docs up.

CA Forum: WebIntelligence Reporting
xuanthuyit:
Apparently =count() [and use of a where] was permissible in previous versions of BusObjects, however, things in XI are different (as other users tell me, being XI is my first experience w/ BusObj...), so anyhow, here is the solution to your question.
You will have have to create two variables for each condition you have. One variable will be the "helper" and the other variable will be the "worker". For instance, create a variable called channel_x and the formula: =if(channel="haney";<metric>;0) (where "haney" is the name of your organization and <metric> is the metric you are using to count or sum things in your report). Once channel_x is saved create another variable called channel_x_count and the formula: =sum([channel_x]). Once channel_x_count is saved, then on your report towards the bottom you can use the Template bar to drag in a new table (perhaps you want to use the Horizontal Table type), and then you can drag channel_x_count into your new table. You will have to repeat the creations of more channel_x type variables (maybe call it channel_y and channel_y_count) or something more descriptive, but in any case substitute the "haney" constant for the next store you want to track, etc, etc. -
Crystal report from JSP using the JRC
Hi, I am trying to call crystal report from JSP using the JRC.
But i am getting the Error as 'Logon Failed'. my web.xml entry is

<env-entry-type>java.lang.String</env-entry-type>
</env-entry>
i am setting the userid and password in the code. Please see the below code for your reference. Please help me to solve the issue.

</html>I never really had much luck with this approach.
Mind you I was using Crystal Reports 10, and as far as I recall it didn't allow setting/changing of database at this level.
Things to check
- can you create a database connection on your page with this URL/username/password?
- what server are you using? Tomcat? WebLogic?
I found this in your other post:
Connection Information: {Server Name=ee6rpt, Connection String=DSN=s(ee6rpt);User ID=s(ee62test);Password=;UseDSNProperties=b(false), Database Name=, Database DLL=crdb_odbc.dll}That would indicate it is using odbc to connect to the database (crdb_odbc.dll). ODBC is a bad idea with java.
The way I have got it to work for me (after much trial and error) was to in Crystal Reports to connect using the Oracle Driver, and specifying a tnsname - eg define REPORT_DS in tnsnames.ora.
When running through the JRC, it looked for a JNDI datasource under that same name "REPORT_DS".
Don't know if that will help you or not.
Good luck,

Please also report what type of cloth was used
I've seen lots of conflicting reports on different polishes such as Brasso and the like.
I think one major variable is what type of cloth was used.
If people could please report what type of cloth is used, that'd be great. Thanks.Selenia,
Thanks very much for the quick response, however, this does not help me.
The newest version of Crystal Reports that we have is 7.01. The menu selection you specified under Report does not exist.
The actual machine and instance of Crystal Reports that was used to create this was in another Business Unit and on machines that were retired long ago.

Unable to print crystal report over web using ActiveX Control
Post Author: jimmyp
CA Forum: General
We have a problem with printing crystal report over web using ActiveX Control. When clicking print button, it only shows a blank dialog web crystal viewer page without any error. The page just simply hangs. We installed the PrintControl DLL and enable all the security setting for ActiveX Control for IE. It still does not print. Does anyone know why?
Environment.
Bundle Crystal Report v10
Asp.net 2.0
IE 6.0 or higher.
Appreciate for your help.

When Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is enabled, using the ActiveX control to print reports from a Crystal 10 DHTML viewer results in the following error message:
"A communication error occurred, printing will be stopped."
How can this error message be resolved?
Resolution
This is a known issue with Crystal Reports 10 and Crystal Enterprise 10 viewers and has been tracked. The Track ID is ADAPT00282199.
This error occurs due to the receiving application performing a case-sensitive check for the HTTPS request header value "ON". When a sender application sends the value as "on" in lower case, the error occurs. The update below changes the receiving application to be case-insensitive.
Hot Fixes or Service Packs address this issue as indicated below. With the updates, this issue is resolved.
Unless indicated otherwise, Weekly Hot Fix updates from our FTP site have only been tested with English versions of products.
For Crystal Reports 10 and Crystal Enterprise 10, the update for this issue is included in the Crystal 10 Viewers Weekly Hot Fix (WHF). This is available in English only at the following location:
ftp://ftp.crystaldecisions.com/outgoing/EHF/viewers10win_en.zip
This issue is addressed in the following components (and later versions):
PageObjectModel.dll, version 10.0.5.785, dated 8/25/2004
ReportRenderer.dll, version 10.0.5.785, dated 8/25/2004

Crystal Reports for Eclipse - Using .csv files?
I recently installed crystal reports for Eclipse and much of the basic CR functionality seems to be there, but then I added a .csv file as an ODA flat file data source and I can see it in my "Data Source Explorer", but can not seem to drag it into my report to actually use the data. Am I missing some basic step?
Thanks,
ChrisHello Chris,
I recommend to post this query to the [Crystal Reports Design|SAP Crystal Reports; forum.
This forum is dedicated to topics related to the creation and design of Crystal Report documents. This includes topics such as database connectivity, parameters and parameter prompting, report formulas, record selection formulas, charting, sorting, grouping, totaling, printing, and exporting but also installation and registering.
It is monitored by qualified technicians and you will get a faster response there.
Also, all Crystal Reports Design queries remain in one place and thus can be easily searched in one place.
Best regards,

Adding comments in WebIntelligence Reports like in MS Excel
We developed a new add-on based on WebIntelligence Extension Points that allows users to create comments in WebIntelligence reports (DHTML view) a bit like in Excel.
You can download at this address : Link: http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/index?rid=/library/uuid/30ccb607-d19b-2d10-f38a-c2413d8d9523
More details from the blog entry : Link: /people/romaric.sokhan/blog/2010/09/12/creating-comments-in-your-webintelligence-report-like-in-ms-excel
We hope this will encourage the development of other extensions from the SDN community
Let us know what you think about this one
RomaricHi,
Writing comments is goog practice in programming.
There is no impact on the comments are added to packages.
The perpormance of the application not dependent on the comments.
Use below comments

Edit BOXI Webintelligence Report on Mac Problem
Can I edit a BOXI webintelligence report on a Mac with Safari? Running Mac OS X 10.6.8. I have the Apple provided Java 1.6 update 29. I seem to be able to get into the application just fine with the browser, but when I go to edit a report it says I have a missing plug-in. It is not specific about what that plug-in is. Does anyone have reporting editing working with Mac? if so, how?
What you are experiencing is a known issue that was introduced with Safari 5 which is not supported in the version you have.
If I am correct you are using XI31 SP1, to have the maximum level of Safari browser supportability you should please upgrade to SP5 , Better to do a full install of SP3 and then upgrade to SP5.
Please do follow best practices in planning the upgrade.
Thanks!

Is there any Open source Reporting Toll for using in swing application ?

All the code i got releted to JSP. and few code get that are using
//Crystal Java Reporting Component (JRC) imports.
import com.crystaldecisions.reports.sdk.*;
import com.crystaldecisions.sdk.occa.report.lib.*;
//Java Imports.
import javax.swing.*;
public class JRCViewReport {
private static final String REPORT_NAME = "JRCViewReport.rpt";
public static void launchApplication() {
try {
//Open report.
ReportClientDocument reportClientDoc = new ReportClientDocument();
reportClientDoc.open(REPORT_NAME, 0);
//Launch JFrame that contains the report viewer.
new ReportViewerFrame(reportClientDoc);
catch(ReportSDKException ex) {
System.out.println(ex);
catch(Exception ex) {
System.out.println(ex);
public static void main(String [] args) {
//Event-dispatching thread to run Swing GUI. This is good practice for Swing applications
//to help ensure that events are dispatched in a predicatable order.
//For more information on using this method, refer to the SUN site below for more details:
//http://java.sun.com/products/jfc/tsc/articles/threads/threads1.html
SwingUtilities.invokeLater(new Runnable() {
public void run() {
//Hand-off to worker function to start application.
launchApplication();
}Also there is one file ReportViewerFrame.java
but the error is "*com.crystaldecisions.reports.sdk*" not found
Please help ..........................................................I have already use Jasper Report. Thakns a lot for your suggestion. Now I think i have solved your problem...... View the code.. this code will not open the JasperViewer but from the background it will be printed and after calling the printing function you can save a data in the database ------------------------
JasperReport jasperReport = JasperCompileManager.compileReport(jasperDesign);
Connection con = Database.getConnection(); // your database connection
jasperPrint = JasperFillManager.fillReport(jasperReport, parameters, con);
for(int i=0;;i++) { //print all pages
try{
JRPrinterAWT.printPages(jasperPrint,i,i,false);
}catch(Exception e) {

Report parameters when using DoCmd.OutputTo
OK,
Thank you one and all for answering my last question. I have another one. OK, I can set the report's parameters using the where clause part of the DoCmd.OpenReport. Great! But I also save that report as a text file using the following command
DoCmd.OutputTo acOutputReport, "rptSalesInvoiceEntryWineShip", acFormatTXT, strInvoicePath & Me.txtInvoiceNumber & ".txt", False
Unfortunately, there is no where clause part available!! OK, any ideas here. thanks!!
Ed Cohen
Edgar CohenThe other way to do this, which avoids having to open the report in print preview, is to base the report on a query which references a control on a form (presumably the txtInvoiceNumber control in your case), as a parameter.
As it happens there is a demo file which does exactly this, using a simple invoicing database as the example, as InvoicePDF.zip, in my public databases folder at:
https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=44CC60D7FEA42912&id=44CC60D7FEA42912!169
You might have to copy and paste the text of the above (not copy the link location) into your browser; for some reason it sometimes doesn't seem to work as a hyperlink.
As its name suggests this creates a PDF file of the invoice, which is primarily what the demo is for, but it will work just the same if outputting to a text file.

Translating a report which is using excel template
Hello,
We are working on a BI report using excel template. I've checked the report designer's user guide and it says template translation is a feature only supporting RTF and BI publisher layout template.
I am wondering what is the best practice for translating a report which is using excel template.
So far I have a alternative which is making all labels in my template dynamically getting values from HCM lookups , but this solution is time consuming.
Could anybody help here?
Regards
BuyunDid you try reading sap help files which clearly explains about Managing templates, selecting templates, creating templates, deleting templates.
[Managing Templates in ALV|http://help.sap.com/saphelp_apo/helpdata/en/d4/a2a138198daa2fe10000009b38f842/content.htm]
This will provide you a clear picturesque on handling templates in ALV.

I have a DeskI report which is using a Store Procedure as its data provider.
This is an Oracle based Store Procedure.
Where can i see wich connection (connections listed in CMC) is used in DeskI report ?
How can i redirect one connection to point to another on report?

GeorgMarina,
The strategy for displaying LOV via Infoview needs to be different than what you've set up via DeskI. The main difference is that when using a client/server program like DeskI, the LOV is cached to the client, thus producing a list more quickly, however, over the web, the web client does not cache LOV as readily. To "solve" this "problem" you need to go back to your universe and trace what is happening. If the LOV is getting generated through an essential "select distinct" on the fact/dimension table, and that table has over a million rows, then it will take some time to generate the list (and thus will timeout). A different strategy to take is to maintain a "backend lookup" table that the LOV will point to instead. The backend lookup table will contain the unique instances of the column getting scanned and thus when the LOV points to the new lookup table the response will be quicker versus the old method. Care must be taken each time new data is loaded to WH to ensure that any new unique values from the "home" table/column are also placed in the backend lookup table.
thanks,
John
