Webpage loading is very slow with parental controls enabled

Hello,
My kids were complaining about slow webpage loading (~2 min page) and how they can't do their homework.  I am running Lion (10.7.2) and using latest safari (or firefox)  on a new imac. (4GB).  After a few hours of searching and reading I created two new accounts, one with and one without minimal parental control enabled.  Sure enough, easily recreated the problem, so it is nothing(?) that my kids did to their accounts.  I have tried toggling the parental controls back to no internet site restrictions without changing the browser response.  Thanks for any help.

i did it many times and the same problem exists

Who else has a problem with parental controls enabled not being able to run Firefox on the Mac? (Any solutions?) (BTW. Chrome doesn't work either)

Although FF4 is so nice I'm almost ready to ditch iGoogle!
Please fix what appears to be an RSS/iGoogle issue with FF4...
Gmail is fine, but titles dont show in most RSS feed gadgets and no stories, strangely, apart from this one:
    http://www.google.com.au/ig/directory?hl=en&url=www.google.com/ig/modules/builtin_news_technology.xml
Which if you enter the last part of the url reports that
    "<Content type="html">
This is a builtin module, so the UserPrefs and Content are ignored."
    Any ideas?

  • Safari "Can't connect to server" with parental controls enabled

Safari says "Can't connect to server" when my childrens' accounts have parental controls enabled. Is there a way to enable parental controls on the administer's account??

    Hi and welcome....
Unfortunately, Parental Controls can only be enabled on a non admin account.
See if there's a proxy set up for Safari. From the Safari menu bar click Safari / Preferences then select the Advanced tab. Click "Change Settings" next to: Proxies.
That will launch System Preferences / Network - Proxies.
If there are any boxes checked under: Select a protocol to configure, deselect the box then click Ok.
Quit Safari (Command + Q) then relaunch Safari.
See if Safari can connect in a parental controlled user account.

  • ITunes Match not showing up with parental controls enabled

I have an Apple TV 2nd gen with the 5.0 software update, and am having trouble getting iTunes Match to show up when parental controls are enabled. Even with iTunes Match specifically set to "Show" in the parental controls menu, it won't show up unless I also enable Rentals and Purchases, which I don't want. Any ideas?

I'm stumped, I tried it on my own ATV for a lark and came up with the same result.

  • How do I stop the "attempted to access these secure websites" popup with parental controls enabled?

This makes parental controls almost unusable.  Nearly every website tries to access numerous other domains that are not in my whitelist.  Is there any way to just stop all prompts to add items to the whitelist?  It could remain static and just block everything and I'd be happy (kind of thought that was the purpose of parental controls and whitelisting to begin with).  Young kids have no idea what to do with these windows popping up.
    Thanks!

I imagine it would prompt for an admin account and then if I authenticated it would be added to the white list and that specific site would then receive requests (e.g. not prompt again); however...
    a) that would only stop prompting for that specific site and this issue would recur with each request to a new domain that occurs down the line
    b) the point of parental controls is that I want to allow my child relatively unsupervised access to the system, that would require I be in the vicinity to authenticate and add each new request
    c) there are likely domains that I would NOT want whitelisted just due to some background request (ad networks, large domains that may otherwise serve up inappropriate content, etc...).
I think I get where you are coming from (and not trying to shoot the messenger here) I just think that teaching them to agree to the message would not be a good solution.  This seems to be a pretty big gap in Apple's implementation and apparantly can only be addressed by them.
    Thank you!

  • Using CD with parental controls

I teach college and I have twelve MacBooks in my classroom. I've enabled parental controls on student accounts, but apparently this disables their ability to run software from the CD that accompanies their textbook. How can I enable use of CDs with parental controls enabled?

I can, but the software is specifically designed to be run from the CD because it's a hybrid CD (runs under Windows and Mac OS). I'd rather not bother with installing anything.

  • IChat breaks with Parental Controls

So I've set up a Macbook for my mother: created an account for her with Simple Finder and Parental Control (as in "control your parents" way ). Then, created a gmail account and set up iChat to use google talk. Everything worked fine until... at some point iChat stopped showing the contact list. She starts iChat - the icon pops up in the Dock, and that's it. Nothing else shows up on the screen. I can see her coming online in my iChat, and I can chat with her - she'll see my messages and my voice/video chat invites, but she herself can't invite anyone, because there's no contact list. Tried everything: Window => Jabber - no luck. The window is just not there.
I've tried to delete all iChat properties and reconfigure it from scratch - impossible in the Simple Finder mode with Parental Controls: iChat simply crashes immediately upon start. The only way to set it up is to disable both Simple Finder and Parental Controls completely - only then I can set up iChat. And after it's set up - turn Simple Finder and Parental Controls back on. It works for some time, and then - BAMM! - again Contact list is gone.
So I've tried the same thing on my MacBook Pro: created a test account, set up the same way I set it up for my mother on her MacBook - with exactly the same effect: iChat breaks after some time. I couldn't find any logic as to why it breaks down, it just stops showing contact list at some point, and it's impossible to reconfigure it with Parental Controls enabled.
***??? So much for the "ease of use"

Is the buddy closed, with ichat in the menu bar click on window and chose the buddy list.

  • Safari + Parental Controls Enabled = Problem

Not sure whether to post this in Safari or Snow Leopard. Just wondering if anyone has run into the infamous (for me at least) Parental Controls bug that was present in 10.5 and now it seems it's found a way into 10.6.2. I tried to checkout today at the Apple Store online and also at Wal-Mart to get a black friday deal, neither of the processes would go past the "Check Out Now" button where you would enter your address information. I switched to my Guest user account and magically it worked. Remembering that i could not connect to the iTunes store in 10.5 with parental controls enabled i tried disabling the parental controls for my user and voila! It works. Has anyone else come across this? Nothing big just annoying to have to switch users.
Additional info: I only use it so i won't delete dock icons no internet access is limited and nothing else is set except for cannot change password. I tried it with FireFox (don't use it regularly just downloaded it) and got the same result, would not go past to the checkout.
    Thanks!

    It's a similar problem
The problem in 10.5 was discussed here also:

It's not a big deal, just a bit frustrating, i do order online a lot.
Since you went to the trouble to ask here, I'd think that not being able to use some of the sites you mentioned would be more important - do you need instructions on how to initiate/replace dock icons?
Haha! No, i've been using Mac OS X long enough i know how it works.

One possible solution would be to organise your inbox into folders.
Its never relly good on any system to have one folder that has everything in it.
Try going to you web gui for that mail account and organise your folders and move mails from your inbox into corresponding folders for better organisation.
Several folders containing the same amount of one folder will usually load a little quicker as the folder may not be accessed to download its content unless veiwed.
So having 10 folders with organised content, and you inbox as an area thats to hold only new emails would work much much quicker with imap.
Most imap servers will only update the contents of a folder when its veiwed.

My macbook pro is running very slow with some strange mouse and window movements. The trackpad is very unresponsive and when responding the cursor moves on its own and/or very erratically. When on safari the window suddenly zooms in or highlights words and looks them up via dictionary. I currently have a wireless mouse connected and I am still having the same problems.
I fee like I may have a virus or my laptop is perhaps being accessed remotely. All of the sharing options are unchecked.
    HELP PLEASE
    Very worried!!

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).

  • Data load becomes very slow

Hi,after a migration from Version 5 to 6.5 the dataload becomes very slow. With V5 the dataload takes 1 hour, with 6.5 it takes about 3 hours.the calculation takes the same time.Any idea?

To many sub VIs could not be found so I can not give you more than some advises. But I see that you run all your loops at full speed. I do not think it is very wise. Insert the "wait (ms)" functions in all while loops, but not the loops handling the daq functions. Since they are controlled by a occurrence. In Loops handling user input only you may set the wait time as high as 500ms. In more important loops use shorter time.
Besides which, my opinion is that Express VIs Carthage must be destroyed deleted
(Sorry no Labview "brag list" so far)

If you have a rescue email address (which is not the same thing as an alternate email address) on your account then the steps on this page will give you a reset link on your account : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6170
If you don't have a rescue email address (you won't be able to add one until you can answer your questions) then you will need to contact Support in your country to get the questions reset.
Contacting Apple about account security : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5699
When they've been reset (and if you don't already have a rescue email address) you can then use the steps on this page to add a rescue email address for potential future use : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5620
Or, if it's available in your country, you could change to 2-step verification : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5570

  • Switchboard on startup and with parental controls

CS5 Design Standard, OS X Snow Leopard
I have a user account with parental controls, and when the user opens, there is a message to the effect that "you don't have permission to open switchboard"
    My questions are:
Is it necessary to have switchboard open on login? I don't see an application or launcher in the normal places that opens switchboard, the only place is in the user Adobe preferences file. Is that where it is prompted to open on login?
Can I delete the file launch.switchboard to prevent open on login, but still retain the usability of the program?
    What does switchboard do exactly?
    Thank you.

..."I've allowed all Utilities, Applications, etc and no matter what, as soon as I turn on the "only allowed selected programs" option, it won't work."...
I'm not sure, but it is possible that allowing / disallowing based on the pre-defined categories may not work because the software that Wacom uses on my system is in an atypical location, and has an atypical structure - it actually has one application contained inside another. It may be necessary to approve the apps explicitly.
    Perhaps try either:
    i) Opening "/Library" > "Application Support" > "Tablet" and explicitly dragging any apps present there into the "Parental Controls" pref pane in the panel where the programmes are listed. On my system, the app is called "PenTabletDriver.app"...
    or
ii) Logging in to the managed account (with application restrictions in place), and trying to launch the "PenTabletDriver.app" programme. If this generates the "application is not allowed" message, it should be possible to "always allow" with "admin" authentication to white-list it at that stage...

  • Drag & Drop Permission with Parental Controls

I recently created a new user account on my computer so that I could use parental controls. The only part of parental controls that I really want to use is the logs feature. I have all the applications checked so that they can all be accessed under this account. My question is, is there any way to let this user move items to other folders? I basically want this account to be able to do everything the admin account can except for a few minor things (like keep a log of activity). Any body have any suggestions?

I know how to do that, thank you for answering though. Is there an easier way than selecting EACH folder and having to do this. To give you an example, I copied my iTunes Library over to the new account...I made the library file and the main iTunes music file read & write but I have over 400 artist folders and do not want to go in and change each of them individually. Is there any easier way to keep logs that I am not aware about? There were 2 reasons I wanted to created this account with parental controls. I wanted to password protect safari and firefox so that my nephew that is staying with us can not open these applications when we are not here. The other reason was to keep the logs. Is there any easier way to go about this?
