Weird color consistency problem: What happened?

Here's a weird one:
On Friday I worked on several RAW files in Lightroom 2.5.
I adjusted all colorations, white balance clarity sharpness etc.
Looked great. Saved the metadata to the files. Opened them in Bridge then Photoshop.
Looked perfect. All coloration looked exactly the same across all three apps as they usually do.
Saturday, I go to open some of the files.
The PSDs looked very washed out, overexposed and unsaturated.
My whole display looked badly calibrated. (Apple Cinema Display)(Too bright and low contrast)
So I started in on trying to fix it.
I recalibrated the monitor in the displays preferences dialog box.
Got the monitor looking correct. The gamma settings were acting strange. Not sticking to their default settings...
I restarted a couple of times.
But when I looked at the files there was a great discrepancy between what I was seeing in Lightroom and what I was seeing in Bridge and Photoshop.
The images looked perfect in Lightroom but washed out and desaturated in Bridge and Photoshop.
It looked like a really bad misunderstanding of color space information.
I have my color profile in Bridge (which is supposed to control all the CS4 color spaces) set to North America PrePress 2.
I could not see a way to set Lightroom's color profile in it's preferences.
All of the RAW files were exported to PSDs as Adobe RGB 1998 or sRGB.
Fast forward to today.
I just opened all three apps and looked at the files.
Today everything is matching again.
Weird!
(And no I was not drinking heavily yesterday)
What happened?
BTW, I am on a non Intel Mac, running OSX 10.5.8.
I had downloaded the Lightroom 3 Beta only to discover that it doesnt work on Non-Intel machines.
I deleted the beta from my hard drive although I dont think that was causing the condition.
I was not running LR 3.0 yesterday.
Anyone have any ideas why my color syncing went so far off between the 3 apps?
Makes me concerned that when my client gets the PSDs from me the files make look like crap on her system.

Undoubtedly a monitor profile problem. I sometimes have weird issues where my mac just seems to ignore the display profile after waking up from sleep (known bug in Apple's OS X BTW). Recalibrating and restarting the apps always fixes the issue.

You don't have a virus. Open the Accessibility or Universal Access preference pane and uncheck the box marked Use grayscale.

Color Consistency Problems

We use Macintosh G5 computers with CS3.
We have a Xerox DocuColor 6060 Digital Color Press/Printer. The problem we are having is with the color changing from week to week. We can print the same exact job, from the same computer and the colors will change. We have a lot of work for advertising agencies and I need the color to match. How do I get the consistency for my customers? Is there any specific program or something we are not doing correctly? I would appreciate any and all help anyone can give me on this.

your printer is a toner printer, opposed to an inkjet.
Toner printers can be calibrated rather fast because
one hasn't to wait for ink drying, but they are not
very stable. In my experience there are sometimes jumps
without any reason, which require a new calibration.
You'll need heavy equipment like GretagMacbeth (GMB)
Eye-One Pro (instrument) and ProfileMaker5 (program).
Before you buy anything you should ask an expert about
the best solution for your purpose (not necessarily
GMB = X-Rite).
Before you buy something by GMB you should deliberately
check the content of the 'bundle'. A bundle consists
of the instrument and a couple of program modules.
Which modules is often a mystery until you open the box.
Of course you'll need a RIP (raster image processor) which
accepts RGB and CMYK input profiles and which uses the
output-profile as found by calibration.
The RIP can be the already installed standard printer driver.

Weird color profile problem after SMC update

Although I've managed to resolve this particular problem, I wonder if anyone has suffered the same thing.
Software update says that I should do the firmware update, so I did that yesterday night. Also, at the same time, I went and removed MS Office 2004 Test Drive (it was taking up space for no good reason). Sometime after doing those things, it seems like OSX had lost the display color profile. The only ones I've got was the Adobe one, Generic RGB and sRGB. The generic RGB washes the screen with a blue tone, and clicking on Calibration would merely have the ColorSync utility complain about the profile isn't there.
Looking at the knowledge base, it says that after the 10.4.8 upgrade, the screen may look bluer than before. The curious thing was that my Macbook reported it running on 10.4.8 when I first got it. But anyways I downloaded 10.4.7's LCD profile, and put it at the location specified in that knowledge base. Display preference still didn't pick up on the profile, so I end up restarting the machine, and now it seems to be using a profile called "Color LCD".
I'm wondering if anyone else have experienced something like this, and going to document this here as a possible solution if someone is lost after a random deletion of a color profile....
Macbook 13" Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I had something similar happen when I upgraded to 10.4.8. In fixing the blue tint problem, I loaded a backup copy of the Color LCD profile. Subsequently, under exact circumstances I don't remember, the machine "lost" the profile. And the calibration option would just give an error.
So somehow, after further fiddling, I ended up with two copies of Color LCD profile, one the old 10.4.7 one, one the 10.4.8 one. I haven't had the problem of it losing the profile again.
But I might mention that there is a related problem which you may encounter. If I use fast user switching with another account and return to my (admin) account, the blue tint returns. The workaround is as described in this article:

I have created an alias to the DMProxy application as described in the above article, and have to run it after every time I use fast user switching.

System disk problem - what happened?

I recently had problems with my MacBook (OS X 10.4.10) and I was able to deduce that problem was somehow related to hard disk(s) and/or file systems. The problem symptoms were:
- Computer failed to recognize external FW drives
- Spotlight searches hanged
- Disk Utility hanged
- Software update hanged
- in Terminal diskutil showed error message "AppleRAID: failed trying to get controller object, rc = 0xe00002c5." for all operations
Problems persisted also after machine restart and also in single-user mode. What I considered strange was that googling did not find anything relevant for the diskutil message.
Eventually I was able to fix the issue by booting from FW disk and running volume repair (which didn't report anything, though) for system disk. However, I'm curious to find out what really happened and why?

Ahh, that's interesting. However, I'm not using any external USB hubs. And at the time I started to experience the problem there was no devices connected to either of the USB ports.
I do have to external FW drives (WD MyBooks which are configured as RAID-1 array) and they were plugged in (although I unplugged them during reboot but the problem still remained).
Now that I google for just the error code I do find references to SCSI and I reckon SCSI and Firewire are sort of related (FW being new 'serial SCSI')?
Apple dev docs also give a plaintext translation to the error code: "exclusive access and device already open"

Somehow lost the ability to color my tabs : ( What happened. I can't even find an option to add colors to the tabs. Help, please.

After running a scan with Malwarebytes today I lost my tabs, and after I recreated them, I discovered I no longer had even the option to color them. How do I get the color options back?

You probably were using an add-on for that, since there isn't a built-in way to color tabs.
One way to lose all your extensions is if Firefox "reset". If that happened, you should see a new folder on your desktop named "Old Firefox Data". Does that appear anywhere?

I am receiving a connection error and can't send out yahoo e-mails. I can surf and use another browser with no problem what happened all of a sudden with my firefox?

I can't send out e-mails! I get a connection error message.
I can receive messages, surf the web via Firefox.
The only related thing to this occurrence is that I received a notice from Firefox recommending that I disable a Skype extension, which I did. Not sure if this is connected.

Well, I had already done those things before. The message I got when I tried is:
An error occurred while sending mail. The mail server responded: From address not verified - see http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/original/manage/sendfrom-07.html. Please verify that your email address is correct in your Mail preferences and try again.
I had input the email address without the @verizon.net extension. That's exactly how I input it in the pop3 set-up for receiving e-mail and it works there.
So I went to the link that is referenced in the error message. It basically had me go to my Yahoo mail account page. I was directed to add an account with a different email address. A verification code was then sent to me via email that I then had to input into the new account's setup page in order to activate my Yahoo mail for smtp use. Once I input the code and validated I was then able to send e-mails just fine with Thunderbird. I was able to use my @verizon.net email address and not the new account I had created.
Bottom line - I had to activate/validate my account before I could send email. I had not read about this anywhere when trying to figure out what was wrong.

What happens to LAB color when exported to cmyk

I have a workflow at work that goes like this: We work color in Photoshop in Adobe RGB (1998) and convert to our cmyk space only upon output. I've found that, in many cases, I like to work in L*a*b. What happens when an LAB images is placed in InDesign and exported to a pdf to our cmyk space? Thanks!

InDesign can place PSD and TIFF files which are in the LAB color space.
What happens when you export to PDF depends on which PDF preset you use. If you choose PDF/X-1a, the Lab color will be converted to the working CMYK color space (by default US Web Coated SWOP v2, same as in Photoshop). You can test this by examining the resulting PDF in Output Preview in Acrobat 8 Professional or Acrobat 9 Pro.
If you chose PDF/X-3 or PDF/X-4, the color would be unchanged and the PDF would still have the image in LAB color space with the LAB profile that Photoshop created.

The new nvidia drivers, weird color blending

i tried all the nvidia drivers, but all what comes after the 53.3 have a weird color blending problem, and i can't fix it.
the problem is visibale if u r looking to an image with gradient color, u'll c it as if it's not correctly blended, and this goes weird when u work with photo editing and retouching an image, u'll think that ur work is bad.
i got to fix the prob, temporaly , by accessing the advanced tab of timing, if i just edit any number the colors go ok, once i press ok and apply, everything remain as the original, and the problem is here again.
do u have anysuggestions plz, anyhelp will be much appreciated.

the problem i'm facing is the color blending in all drivers after 53.3 is not showing right, the gradient still showed degrade and not fully blended, as if u turn ur display to 24 bit, instead of 32bit, but actually the result i get is like the image is displayed at 28 bit
u can't know what i'm talking about , but if u try it by urself, just open an image in photoshop or any editing application, choose any image that have a gradient shown well, and c it, u'll notice that gradient is not fully smooth, it's kind of steped, and to b sure, fill a scratch background by the linear gradient tool (black, white) and c the disaster, there is no smooth intermediate grey section, u'll c steped.

Weird dual monitor problem with changing image colors

I have dual monitors, same brand and type, same color settings and adjustments, and so far image was the same on both of them. Nothing regarding monitors or color preferences I have changed, but suddenly I started having this weird problem. Example:
1. Here is the screenshot. I have pure red image, palettes and layers panel are on the second monitor.
2. I start dragging image window to the other monitor and STILL HOLDING the mouse button (like I said, dragging)
3. And when I release the mouse color suddenly changes.
If I pick window and drag again color returns to normal. As soon as I release the mouse color changes.
This is only happening on second monitor.
I re-installed graphic drivers, and also re-installed Photoshop CC 2014.
I also changed settings so the image both monitors show is the same (duplicate screen in windows) and there is no problem then. If I return to extended display problems FIXES. But as soon as I lock the computer, and login again the problem shows up again.
Any ideas what should I do or how to fix it?

I see your using Window have two displays. I not sure how windows handle profiles for both displays. Your displays are the the same models. My Displays are physically about the same size bothe 16:9. One displays 1920x1080 pixels the other 1360 x 768 so the resolution are quite different requires me to create special wallpaper. to make sean looks seamless or image on have the same composition.
I notice that when I drag a window between displays a size difference but the color consistent. When I release the mouse button I see a color shift and a screen capture shows this. And if I drag the split window the cole os once again consistent. I think what we are seeing is more a Windows thing not a Photoshop thing.
I'm using Windows 7 and CC 2014. I do notice my window drags over the toolbar and under the pallets on the second display. Your window drags under your toolbar.

And without info - it's near to impossibly to help. Try my general troubleshooting note:
Troubleshooting note
When iMovie doesn't work as intended this can be due to a lot of reasons
iMovie Pref files got corrupted - trash it/they and iMovie makes new and error free one's
problem in iMovie Cache folder - trash Cache.mov and Cache.plist
Creating a new User-Account and log into this
This forces iMovie to create all pref. and cache files new and error free
Event or Project got corrupted - try to make a copy and repair
a Codec is used that doesn't work (even though iMovie and/or iDVD tries to / they fail in the end)
version miss match of QuickTime Player / iMovie / iDVD
preferences are wrong - Repair Preferences
other hard disk problem - Repair Hard Disk (Disk Util tool - but start Mac from ext HD or DVD)
External hard disks - MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted to work with Video
( UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - works for most other things - but not for Video )
USB-flash-memories - usually do not work
Net-work connected hard disks - usually do not work (most often not fast enough and WRONGLY FORMATTES as DOS etc)
iPhoto Library got problems - let iPhoto select another one or repair it. Re-build this first then try to re-start iMovie. When iMovie starts-up it first look trough this iPhoto library and if faulty it all Halt’s.
This You do by
First - close iPhoto
Secondly - on start up of iPhoto - Keep {cmd and alt-keys down}
Thirdly - now select all five options presented
THEN - WAIT a long long time (>20 hours are not strange)
free space on Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk to low (<1Gb) - I never go under 25Gb free space for SD-Video (4-5 times more for HD)
external devices interferes - turn off Mac - disconnect all of them and - Start up again and re-try
GarageBand fix - start GB - play a few notes - Close it again and now try iMovie
Screen must be set to million-colors
Third-party plug-ins doesn't work OK
Run "Cache Out X", clear out all caches and restarts the Mac
Let Your Mac be turned on during one night. At about midnight there is a set of maintenance programs that runs and tidying up. This might help
Turn off Your Mac - and disconnect Mains - for about 20-30 minutes - at least this resets the FireWire port.
In QuickTime - DivX, 3ivx codec, Flip4Mac, Perian etc - might be problematic - temporarily move them out and re-try
(I deleted the file "3ivxVideoCodec.component" located in Mac HD/Library/Quicktime and this resolved my issue.)

New iMac display problem(?) - weird colors and grain

Hello,
I'm a fresh mac user, made the switch this monday (August 27th) when my 24" iMac 2.4GHz C2D arrived. After using it for a while, I noticed a handful of dead pixels, and a semi-bright green stuck one. I thought I'd wait and see how disturbing I would find them before raising an issue about them.
Well, yesterday I decided to make my first backup of the whole system to my external 500GB Lacie drive (connected with FW800) using Super Duper!, which to my understanding is a reasonably sturdy and reliable backup application.
During the first backup iteration I started to notice some alterations in color in the top middle part of the display. I then returned to whatever I was doing (not on the mac, I had no other applications running, just Super Duper!), and after a while took another look at the display. The weird colored area had expanded, and the whole display had become somewhat grainy. Also, the backup process had slowed down quite a bit (from ~30MB/s to ~7-8MB/s).
So I cancelled the backup operation and logged out and back in again. No change. Then I restarted the whole system, which booted just fine, with none of the aforementioned problems. Even the second backup iteration went without problems.
Still, it's a new (and with my budget, quite expensive) computer, and if I get this kind of problem during the first week, I cannot continue using it happily in the fear of these problems reoccurring time and again.
I took a couple of pictures of this, one during and one after the problem. The quality of these are quite lousy, they're taken with my Nokia 9500 Communicator.

The images are taken in the same light conditions, but from slightly different viewing points. Note: The first image does not present reflections, it's how the screen looked (actually, in real life it looked somewhat worse)
What do you think?
Could this be a driver related issue or have I received bad hardware?
My drivers and Apple software should be up to date (at least OS X informs me that everything is, and I haven't found newer graphics drivers anywhere).
If anyone has had the same or related problems or know how I should proceed with this matter, I would be grateful.

So far the only fix suggested has been to call apple and get a replacement. I'm still.....still waiting for mine to make it slowly across the ocean from China, so I don't know how the new one is working. I'd call Apple and request a new one.

I was surfing the net when my computer started emitting double beeps. I shut it down with no problem but I can't find any info on double beeps that did not occur at startup (haven't tried starting it back up yet though). What happened?

Quite the trial to sign in to freaking Apple support. I apparently made an account with my primary e-mail, but damned if I can recover the password, apparently I don't know my own birthday. So I had to make a new account with another e-mail, and even when I thought it was done, no, I had to fill out more information before I could get to this screen. You won't let me ask for tech support from your message board without my mailing address? Then my completely inoccuous user name was rejected for containing banned words. Lemurs and cats are profane now, what? This is why I hate computers.
Anyway, I've got Mac OS X 4.something, can't check because it is shut down, and I already described my problem in the subject there before I got dragged back into account creation. I searched several places for answers but all I can find are discussions about double beeping at startup (even when excluding the word "startup" from search results), while my double beeping started all of a sudden when the computer was in use. The beeps were certainly less than a minute apart. What happened? What do I need to do about it? Is it safe to start the computer up again? Fortunately my files are pretty much all backed up.

I don't know if we are experiencing the same problem, but this is what I did and it seemed to work for me so far.
Before anything I had to hard restart my laptop. hold power button until off then turn back on.
In Finder click on Go, then click Go to Folder. in the dialogue box type
/var/db/crls
In that folder there are two files that you need to move to the trash
crlcache.db
ocspcache.db
You will need to type in your password to move these to the trash.
Restart your computer and then Empty the Trash. It is very important that you empty the trash afterwards. I forgot to do this the first time and I had to restart the whole process. It has been a few days and I have been without any problems.
I am not claiming this process to be my own, I found it on another discussion thread and it worked for me. I don't have a link to it because I had to use someone else's computer and had no luck trying to find it again. This is the procedure I followed, I do remember it well and I wrote down the steps because I had to do it twice and got tired of combing through all of the websites I have searched looking for a fix to my problem. Hopefully this helps, and try it at your own risk of course.

Try reset iPad
Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears
Note: Data will not be affected.
