Xiaoying is a program manager in Microsoft Visual Studio Office Developer Tools team | This post is provided "as-is"

We want to provide customization of our applications (C++ and .Net C# both). Evaluating VSTA, it  looks like a good fit, but really not good enough examples and documentation.
I have few questions or concerns -
1. What are the differences/similarities with VSTA 2.0, Can we try or use VSTA 2.0 examples to understand VSTA 2012?
2. Can we have some detail example for VSTA 2012 like the ones provided with VSTA 2.0 (e.g. - shapeApp samples which by the way no longer available for downloading!!! ).
3. The given documentation ("VSTA Sample Host Integration.docx") and example only illustrates the part which loads Visual Studio, creates, saves, compiles and runs a template project on C#.
4. No documentation available on how to work with VB projects/scripts in VSTA 2012.
5. Document tells nothing about how to provide host application's APIs for customization or overwrite any host  object by scripting. In VSTA 2.0 I think there was a concept of Proxy classes, do we have similar concept
here too?
6. Debugging part is also not complete in the documentation. Starting the external process and running  the Addin is not clear.
Please provide more elaborate documentation if possible. Thanks!
Hi Xiaoying,
Could you answer on questions above?

  • Visual Studio Tools for Applications

    Hello,
I used to custom-code InfoPath forms (2013) using Visual Studio 2012 and recently upgraded to VS Express 2013 with the VSTA update. When clicking the Code Editor in InfoPath Designer,  I'm prompted to install Visual Studio 2012, VSTA and C# Support.
When I create a new project to see if the Tools for Apps projects has been installed, I find nothing has changed.
Why isn't the VSTA update working, unless it's only for Premium and higher editions?
    Thanks in advance.

Actually my bad. It turns out it only works with Professional, Premium and Ultimate.
    Thanks.

  • Known Issue: You cannot install the Visual Studio Tools for Universal Windows Apps on a pre-RC build of Visual Studio 2015 (Windows 10 Insider Preview SDK and tools, April 2015 release)

The Tools for Universal Windows Apps requires Visual Studio 2015 RC. If you have an earlier build installed, for example, Visual Studio 2015 CTP6, you must first uninstall Visual Studio 2015 and the Tools for Windows.

To uninstall earlier versions of Visual Studio 2015 and the tools for Universal Windows app development,
Go to Control Panel, and select Programs & Features.
Select Microsoft Visual Studio 2015 and click Change.
    Click Remove, and then Yes.
Next, select Microsoft Visual Studio 2015 Tools for Windows 10, and click
    Change.
    Click Remove, and then Yes.

Now all my infopath form when I click on Code Editor or On-load-Event....  the all give me error saying "infopath has encountered an error.  The operation failed"
What is going on? How can I fix this?

The Visual Studio Tools for Universal Windows Apps requires Windows 10 build 10074 or later. If you use an earlier build of Windows 10, you will see a notification in Visual Studio, the XAML designer will not be available, and you will get the following

To work around this issue, either
Use Windows 8.1 and deploy to the Windows Mobile Emulator

  • How do we use Script (batch file with msbuild/msbuild project) to build Cordova Project created with Visual Studio Tools for Apache Cordova?

I use Visual Studio to create Cordova projects. I need to build Cordova projects using msbuild and buildbot via script for my project but I can find only information about how VS combine with Cordova CLI to build multi device hybrid application.

    Hi Samseth,
Yes, correct, the only thing we can find on the MSDN is:
    Deploy and Run Your App
And that's the reason why Visual Studio Tools for Apache Cordova existing.

  • Libgit2 Error - Trying to checkout/clone a git repository with Visual Studio Tools for Git

I'm trying to clone a branch from our git repository using Visual Studio Tools for Git. I'm doing the following:
    1. We have a local server that stores all our repositories and they are tracked using GIT+Stash
    2. I create a subbranch B1 from master in repository X using stash
    3. Stash will give me a URL in the form http://user@stash:7990/src/x/repository.git
    4. I go to Visual Studio (where I already installed Visual Studio Tools for Git) and follow the instructions to clone this branch to my local machine using the procedure as described in: Open and Clone a Git team project http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh850445.aspx#remote_3rd_party_connect_clone
    5. Visual studio shows the following error: An error occurred. Detailed message: An error was raised by libgit2. Category = Zlib (Error).
    Failed to inflate packfile
What is libgit2? Is there anything I should change in my settings or paths? The only workaround I have found for this issue is to clone my branch through Source Tree (third party tool) and then open visual studio, then any other functionality will be fine
(e.g. commits, push, sync, pull etc, all this I can do directly from Visual Studio)... but why can't I clone from Visual Studio?
    Notes:
    - We're not using TFS (i.e. we only use Git and I'm effectively trying to do the step found in this URL: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh850445.aspx#remote_3rd_party_connect_clone)
    - We use Atlassian Stash (installed in our servers) to create the repositories and branches
    - I'm using Visual Studio 2012
    David

    Hi David,
I am sorry that I can't reproduce your issue on my machine. I can't set the shared folder path (\\DEVELOPMENT) as local path, but I can set D:\folder which maps to the

  • Cannot Show Visual Studio 2010 Tools for Applications Editor

I'm trying to teach myself the ins and outs of SSDT (I believe it was formerly called SSIS; correct me if I am wrong).
So, I'm checking to see if a file exists, and I'm following the example here:
    http://bidn.com/blogs/DevinKnight/ssis/76/does-file-exist-check-in-ssis
I entered the ReadOnlyVariables and ReadWriteVariables, and as soon I I click on the 'Edit Script' button I see this popup:
What am I doing wrong here?  How do I fix this problem?  Is something disabled?  Do I need to install something?
As an alternative, I tried the methodology I found here:
    http://visakhm.blogspot.in/2011/12/simulating-file-watcher-task-in-ssis.html
That looks promising.  unfortunately, I don't see anything named 'Check for file presence' in my SSIS Toolbox.  unless, this is something I need to create and save in the Toolbox...that's the only thing I can think of.  It talks about creating
a script task, so that would make sense.  Again, as I mentioned above, I can't create a script task because something isn't setup right, or configured right, or whatever.
Please help me get this working.
    Thanks.
Knowledge is the only thing that I can give you, and still retain, and we are both better off for it.

    Hi ryguy72,
The issue occurs because the Visual Studio Tools for Applications (VSTA) design-time or runtime is not installed properly. This can be caused by the install order of the SSDT and SQL Server 2012 Integration Services service. Please open the Programs
and Features window, and check which of the following components are not installed (supposing it is a 64-bit SQL Server platform):
Microsoft Visual Studio Tools for Applications x86 Runtime 3.0
Microsoft Visual Studio Tools for Applications x64 Runtime 3.0
Microsoft Visual Studio Tools for Applications Design-Time 3.0
The Microsoft Visual Studio Tools for Applications Design-Time 3.0 component should be missing in your environment. Then, install the correct Design-time or Runtime component from the \redist\VSTA\designtime\ or \redist\VSTA\runtime\ folder of the SQL Server
    2012 install media.

  • Couldn't close the visual studio.

    Hi,
My requirement is to open a internal browser in my application. My application is a plugin to a visual studio, which looks similar like VS.
I have the following code, which works perfect.
    dispatcher.BeginInvoke((System.Threading.ThreadStart)delegate()
    IVsWebBrowsingService browser =
    this.viewModel.Service.GetService<SVsWebBrowsingService,
    IVsWebBrowsingService>();
    IVsWindowFrame frame =
    null;
    int hr = browser.Navigate(Path.GetFullPath(this.viewModel.ReportSetting.OutputFileName),
    0, out frame);
    System.Diagnostics.Debug.Assert(hr ==
    VSConstants.S_OK,
    "Navigate did not return S_OK.");
    //this.viewModel.ReportSetting.OutputFileName = "C:\Outputfile.xml"
All works fine, problem here is when i try to close the Visual studio(My application), i am getting a pop up window saying
"Microsoft Visual Studio has detected that
an operation is blocking user input. This can be caused by an active modal dialog or task that needs to block user interaction. Would you like to shut down anyway?"
Could you please let me know what could be cause for this issue.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi puni_vidhya,
    >>"Microsoft
Visual Studio has detected that an operation is blocking user input. This can be caused by an active modal dialog or task that needs to block user interaction. Would you like to shut down anyway?"
According to the exception message, to check if the issue is related to the plugin impact the Visual Studio close, so I suggest you could try to
run devenv.exe /safemode in command line and then try to close the VS again to check this issue.
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms241278.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396
    (1) If you did not get same issue, I doubt that the issue is related to the plugin, so I suggest you disable Add-ins (e.g. “Tools” | “Add-in Manager”) and then check this issue again.
    (2) If you get same issue, I suggest you could try to create a simple project and then close the VS check if all type projects have same issue.
    (a) If all the error have same issue, maybe you will need to repair or re-install the VS and then check this issue.
    (b) If the issue just occurs in the specified application, I assume that the issue may be related to your application itself issue. So please you debug your application to check this issue again.

  • App.Xaml cannot be edited in design view(Visual Studio 2012 for Window Store).

App.Xaml cannot be edited in design view(Visual Studio 2012 for Window Store).

    The
Simple Application Walkthrough specifically instructs one to edit App.xaml (because it previously had you inject a defect by changing the name of the file StartupUri property points to). So that is the scenario, or one of them. I assume it is 'valid'
to rename MainWindow.xaml to whatever you want it to be.
So there should be some way in the IDE to fix this (short of changing the file name back to match StartupUri). What is it?
Like another person here, I just edited it with a text editor and reloaded it into VS. But...

I have tried repair it, but it said:

After repair, I clicked "uninstall" and it tipped me the same error.
    Thanks very much.

    Hello Sakura Chino,
The Visual Studio installation will leave some components on your OS for repair/uninstall. The problem seems related to this. If you can find the installer which you used to install Visual Studio 2013, then please use it to repair and uninstall. It
will fix problems on your OS so please don't try to uninstall from control panel.
If you cannot find the source installer, please download the same version of Visual Studio 2013 ISO from here:
    https://www.visualstudio.com/en-us/downloads/download-visual-studio-vs.aspx
Then verify it's hash value by refer to the following page:
    https://www.visualstudio.com/en-us/downloads/visual-studio-2013-iso-sha1-vs
After that, you can use that installer to repair then uninstall.
If you still meet any problem, please use the following tool to fix:
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/mats/program_install_and_uninstall
It is for Visual Studio 2010 or previous versoin, but some customers fixed problems by using this tool. I think you can also have a try on it.

  • Integrating crystal report into the visual studio standard edition IDE

I have visual studio 2005 standard edition. I need to upgrade some asp.net reports that were done using visual studio 2003.
I have just install Crystal Reports XI developer edition version 11.0.0.1282.  How can I integrate Crystal into the Visual Studio 2005 IDE?

    Hi
I would like to inform you that VS 2005 is only compatible with CR XI R2 and CR 2008.

    NOTE:
After making changes to the registry, restart the affected service or application as required.
After deleting the CR XI from the system install the CR XI R2 full build and provide the same key as you provided in CR XI.
URL to download CR XI R2 is: - http://resources.businessobjects.com/support/additional_downloads/service_packs/crystal_reports_en.asp#CRXIR2
    Click on
    Service Pack 2 - Full build  - ZIP - 1.03 GB - released April 2007
I would suggest to use the latest service pack of CR XI R2 i.e. Service Pack 4.
    to download SP4 click [here|http://resources.businessobjects.com/support/additional_downloads/service_packs/crystal_reports_en.asp#CRXIR2].
Note:- before installing SP4 - you must have installed CR XI R2 SP2
    Hope this helps!!

    Hi Divakar,
What’s the version of your TFS?
How do you configure the test control?
Please make sure you are specify the team collection instead of team project.
On the other hand, you may enable test controller logs. (You could share the log file on the OneDrive)
