There are no viruses for Mac OS X in the wild, nor spyware so there is no need for anti-virus or anti-spyware software. You can't protect against something that doesn't exist. The Mac already has a built-in firewall,; anything else is redundant and a waste. The only other malware is a Trojan Horse, but like any other software on Mac OS X, it requires user authorization before it can be installed, so as long as you aren't careless about what you download or install, you shouldn't have any problems.

In this case, you can really only input sounds digitally. The cheapest solution would be to get an iMic USB device (maybe that's what your husband had - look at the pic. Older models were more like silvery), it comes for < 40 $, and you can plug a microphone into it (with the small 1/8" plug). Not super-great sound, but for that mic it should be good enough.

Office 2004 and Other Applications Don't Work in Lion/Mountain Lion
If you have Office 2004 which is a PPC-only suite, it will not work in Lion/Mountain Lion. You need to upgrade to Office 2011 - Mactopia - or you can try the freeware suite, Libre Office, that is functionally similar to Office 2007 for Windows except it works on Lion/Mountain Lion.

You can only return the machine if you're within 14 days of purchase - otherwise you're just 'stuck' with what you purchased (unless you sell it, of course).
I always recommend that Retina owners order 16GB of RAM as the RAM is not upgradable - it's soldered onto the logic board.
Your call - if you're with 14 days of purchase, take it back and exchange for a 16GB model. Or sell it and buy a model with 16GB. The higher amount of memory will allow you to run far more memory-hungry apps concurrently.

Tried the anti-phishing and anti-malware test pages with correct security settings as directed; they both load fine--which they shouldn't!

I would purchase a recover disk set from HP or an HP Partner.
Is was sold with a recovery partition capable of producing a set of recovery disks. When it was set up, the notebook asked if you were ready to make a set of recovery disks. Unfortunately, it would have been less expensive to pay attention to what it said. A disk set will cost around $20-30.00.

I just upgraded to Mac OS X Snow Leopard version 10.6.3 and now my iCal 3.0.8 won't open at all. What version do I need to or should I upgrade to and where do I find it?

The version installed with Snow Leopard since iCal is part of OS X. If you are trying to use iCal from a different drive and version of OS X, then it won't work. If the installed version of iCal in Snow Leopard is the wrong version, then there was a problem. Delete the wrong version then reinstall Snow Leopard:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
Do the following:
1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with reinstalling OS X. Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files. After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.

It's irrelevant that there are no current mac virus's, as, like the stock market, current performance isn't a gauge of the future. In addition, use of an antivirus is good if you receive files that you might forward on to your Windows friends, and want to ensure you're not passing on any virus's. I use, and recommend, ClamXAV, also recommended above. It's available from http://www.clamxav.com . I use it to scan mail and downloads.
You do want your mac firewall turned on. Click systems preferences, security, click the firewall tab, click allow only essential connections (if not already highlighted), click advanced, and enable firewall logging and enable stealth mode. If your daughter uses iTunes to download music, you don't need to do anything else. If she uses Bittorrent, then you should open some ports. Watching video's won't be impacted with the firewall enabled.
I've also installed a program named Little Snitch, which requires me to specifically allow any outbound communication. Once authorized, you don't have to do anything again. So, if something were to sneak through, it wouldn't be able to phone home without authorization. Little Snitch is available from http://www.obdev.at/products/littlesnitch/index.html
On your overall performance, one thing you might do is to run OnyX, available from http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs/english/apps.html . Run the tasks on the maintenance and cleaning tabs, which does disk maintenance. Before running any disk maintenance, you should have a hard drive backup. A number of people have used this and found it improved performance.

I clicked on a link in an e-mail from Mozilla Firefox <[email protected]> It took me to http://www.mozilla.org/firefox/its-a-trap.html which assured me that I was not protected from phishing. I didn't follow the instruction to download Firefox because I already have Firefox 8 and run it in Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx.

Those domains have changed recently from mozilla.com to mozilla.org and the mozilla.org sites are not yet in the phishing protection database.

What is the best internet security, anti-virus, anti-spyware and anti-malware software to use on a MacBook Pro 13' (Late 2011 model) on both Mac and Windows 7 (Parallel 7) without slowing down or effecting the operating system too much ? Do I need to get the free or paid version ?

Although anti-virus software is not necessary on a Mac, you do need to be aware of what's out there and how to protect yourself against possible new threats. See my Mac Malware Guide.
As for running anti-virus in Windows 7, that's a Windows issue. I personally put AVG Free on the Windows machines used by my family, but I'm no Windows expert. I'm sure different folks here will have different recommendations, and a few of those folks may even be Windows experts! (In other words, that may be a question better suited for other forums where a higher percentage of Windows users hang out.)

Yes, I have used ClamXav for about 18 months to scan all incoming emails, and also at startup other locations.

No viruses that can attack OS X have so far been detected 'in the wild', i.e. in anything other than laboratory conditions.
It is possible, however, to pass on a Windows virus to another Windows user, for example through an email attachment. To prevent this all you need is the free anti-virus utility ClamXav, which you can download from:

However, the appearance of Trojans that can infect a Mac seems to be growing, but is a completely different issue to viruses.

The trojan also installs a watchdog process that ensures the victim's (that's you!) DNS records stay modified on a minute-by-minute basis.

I posted this more as an FYI. I'm using Firefox 31 on two PCs. and had a phishing incident today. I read your article on Firefox's ant-phishing / anti-malware protection, and using the two test pages you provided I found the phishing test page wasn't blocked. I followed your instructions and successfully activated it. For whatever reason on my two PCs (one is Windows 8.1 Update 1 and the other an ancient XP machine) only the anti-malware was running. Both computers were updated to version 31 in the last few days. I don't know if the failure to have anti-phishing turned on by default is a bug in this version, or was a setting copied from an earlier version of Firefox. I had never changed those security settings myself on any version of Firefox.

It's more likely this setting was carried over from an earlier version of Firefox. Some people disable one type of protection in favor of the other. Or disable the malware & phishing protection when troubleshooting other issues. Like to reach sites that Google says are bad but really are false positives.
You may have forgotten fooling with that setting or unchecked it by accident. For example, go back to the Security section in the Options. Move your mouse all the way over to the right underneath the "Exceptions" button and click your mouse along that area for each setting. You see how easily they could be changed by a misclick?
But since you say this happened on 2 computers, I'll ask a few people to test this out and see what happens.
You also said you had a anti-phishing incident? Could you elaborate a little more on that. I'm guessing you were in your email and opened a email you thought to be legitimate?
You'd only have been safe in that case if Google's database had been updated with info to block that exact phishing attack. Did you try revisiting the actual phishing attack after activating the protection? I'm curious to know if it was blocked.

I upgraded to Firefox 4.0 and now Norton 360 anti-phishing is not working.

Norton 360 anti-phishing will not work on web searches now that I have upgraded to Firefox 4.0. It will however still work when I use Internet Explorer. I rely on the anti-phishing part of Norton 360 to tell me what internet sites to avoid. Does anyone have a solution? My computer runs Windows XP. Thanks!
