What do readers want?  Content or design?

I am a writer first, a web designer second. I am writing a restaurant review section for my site and can either put all 30 reviews on one page, making it a very long page, or break it up into 6 different sections.  What is better?  Do readers like a long page with lots of content (I would add a table of contents on the top with anchor links to each subsection) or do they like short pages and more separate sections?  I used to work at a major website that swore that readers did not like to even scroll down a single page but I was never convinced of that.  What is the current mindset of page design?  One long page with lots of content (and graphics to make it visually appealing) or many separate pages with less content?

Are all the viewers readers, you ask?  Good question, and perhaps that's the heart of the matter.  I like to write reviews
that actually say something and are fun to read - meaning humorous or provocative.  For me that's about 2 to 3 paragraphs and I've added pics of the restaurants (which I think readers want) but did them to look like Polaroids for graphical interest.  Most of my competitors will give a one sentence overview like "Georges at the Cove is San Diego's best restaurant with an ocean view".  I like to write little stories about my real experiences at the restaurants, which I think is better content.
That being said, the page can get pretty long with 30 reviews.  I like what you guys said about keeping it in one place.  On the top navigation I have a drop down menu so when you click on "Restaurants" you get the sub categories like "Best Mexican", or "Cheap Eats".  Maybe to keep everyone happy I'll create "Restaurant Cheat Sheet" and "Hotel Cheat Sheet" and "Attractions Cheat Sheet" that just list the top in each category but have links to the full reviews?  I don't want to get too redundant.  What do you think?
Again, I could also break this dang thing out to 6 or 8 sections and put "Best Mexican" onto its own page, for example.  Each page would only have 3 to 5 reviews, about 2 1/2 pages worth of content.  Again, any comments would be great.  Personally I hate sites that are just links to other stuff but I also realize the world is changing so want to make sure I don't outsmart myself.  Oh, and my main goal of the site is to hook the reader but to ultimately get them to book a hotel through me.  So I hope my site is so good that it becomes a reference and that when they book a hotel they feel some sort of alliance or debt to me and book with me versus a competitor.  My current version of the site does very well and does not have that much content so I am concerned that the new site might be so rich in content that they never get around to booking a hotel.
Compare the first site I am currently updating (all hand coded when in 1996!) www.localwally.com with a site I did last year when I was just getting started with DW at www.napatouristguide.com.  Oddly, the dumb little site gets fewer uniques(200 a day) but lots of hotel bookings, while th napa site gets 600 uniques a day but rarely gets a hotel booking.  So that's why I am a bit concerned that too much content might not accomplish my goal.

    Well, yes the rest of the phone works, but the sole reason I got it was to able to view these files.  I had a Blackberry and I wanted a bigger screen.  Work allowed me to choose the iPhone or the latest Galaxy phone.  I chose the iPhone because I was told "it just works". 
    I know the Galaxy reads the .txt files because coworkers have it.  If the iPhone wont allow me to read the file then it doesn't matter if "it just works" because it can't do what I need it to do.

    The concept for CS review is awesome and the current functionality looks to be a solid foundation ready for growth. I'm hoping that the product catches on and continues to mature at a decent pace. Are there other features that you would need in order for you to rely on it as part of your everyday workflow?
    Here's a few feature requests from my wishlist. Please feel free to add your own.
    Ability to download a review
    My clients typically want to "walk designs around" to the execs in the early stages of a product and then embed examples into larger documents toward the later phases of the project.
    Visual overview
    I find myself getting lost in larger presentations. "was that example on page 7, 8 or 9 of the review?" I'd love to see a thumbnail overview (the ability to mouseover a thumbnail and see comments would be very useful as well). I currently use "print summary" on workspaces and folders very often in conceptshare to get a birds eye view of everything.
    Long term organization?
    With no ability to version or archive reviews, what happens after using CS live for a year or more with multiple clients on multiple projects? only time will tell how big of an issue this is.

  • What Do Users Want Skype To Be?

    This is a question to the rest of the Skype userbase: what do you want skype to be for you?
    I'll start it off.
    1) I want skype to be a free and minimalist text messenger, group chat, conference call and conference video call client. All functionality should be around optimizing the experience of these 4 activities. That means streamlined functionality for these purposes--fast, error free, no disconnects, no user problems. It also means no superfluous functionality--ads, unecessarily complex emoticons, bulky left panel that can't be separated from the individual chats, etc.
    2) I want chat to be compact and minimalist, or at least customizable so I can make it minimalist (no bulky chat bubbles, not even on mobile--it's even worse on mobile where pixel real-estate is more valuable than on a 1080 monitor).
    3) I want no ads. Microsoft is a big enough company that they can market some higher quality version of skype for professional use. But there must remain free and available chat, group chat, conference call and conference video call for an unlimited number of users. Find another way to make money or an open-source alternative will undercut you.
    4) The mobile app MUST be severely streamlined. It is easily one of the worst, bulkiest, slowest, most poorly designed apps I've used. It autoscrolls when new messages are sent which means I can't read logs without being interrupted. It crashes frequently. It uses more memory and CPU time than any other app despite being one of the simplest and feature-poor apps on my phone.
    5) Make the UI less bulky. There is so much dead space on the skype UI. The actual chat represents only ~50% of the actual volume of the UI when at a reasonable size. The left side-bar is too big, especially with no hideable functionality. The titlebars, ads, and even text box all have huge, white dead-zones.
    Bottom line: streamline the Skype codebase, streamline the UI, streamline the options we have as users and stop adding/removing/breaking things each update just to appear fresh. Keep what works, fix what doesn't.

    How can I hide content in design view within Dreamweaver?
    I have a tabbed content menu that uses some javascript. Everything looks great in Live view, but when I go to design view, all the content goes way beyond the div. How can I make it to where I can hide the content in that div in design view or wrap it completely inside of there? It's really hard to explain which is why I provided some pictures!

    Humm....... you want to hide it in Design View whilst working on the rest of the site?
    If that is the case set the menu container <div> to display: none; -
    <div id="menu" style="display: none;">This is the content menu</div>
    Then either set it to display: block; when you're ready to view it live or remove the style completely.

  • Path issue leaving me unable to add blog post content in design view

    Hi guys,
    I am unable to add blog post content in design view when a template is applied to my blog. BC support have told me they fixed the problem by making minor changes to the paths of the css and javascript files and then told me to post on here for the solution.
    When I call the files using <link rel="stylesheet" href="/css/custom.css" /> everything displays perfectly but in BC I can't add blog post content in design view. I can edit in html but this isn't ideal for clients to update the blog.
    If I change the paths to <link rel="stylesheet" href="css/custom.css" /> it fixes the problem and I can then edit blog content in design view but all blog pages that are in folders display incorrectly. Only the main blog page display properly.
    I'm sure the answer is simple but I can't find it so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

    I took a look at your page URL and can't find any CSS issues or styles that would directly affect you editing/adding content to a blog post via the content editor.
    Make sure you either clear your cache or try in another browser to see if the problem is localized to your current browser.
    If you still have the problem can you link me to a screencast (you can use Jing if you don't have a screencast program: http://www.techsmith.com/jing.html) of what you are experiencing?

    Everything you have described can be done using PHP (assuming your website is on an apache server). There are three separate "sub-projects" to your overall project:
    1. Log-in system. Secrity is an issue here. There are several ways to accomplish this.
    2. File upload routine.
    3. Display of directory contents in a dynamic webpage.
    Fortunately, each of these tasks is explained in the book PHP Solutions, by David Powers. It even presents several different methods for handling the log-in password routine and security. Since your project doesn't require a database, you will want to choose a password storage method that doesn't require one.
    The way I would handle this is to create a directory for each client. Maybe the directory name will be the client's ID, like 27, 28, etc. Then the upload routine will use a varible based on the client id, so it will put the right client's files in the right directory.
    Overall, this is not a very difficult project, especially if you get the Power's book and read through the appropriate chapters.

  • Can someone help me? How do I change the option to pick where or what program I want to open a file after I've downloaded it? I tried to look for an option for this and can't find it anywhere.

    For example I download a file and I click on it and there will sometimes be a window that opens saying what program I want to open the file with? And then it'll also have a check box saying if I want to use this program for all files I download. I can't change it when I download the file because that one file I keep downloading keeps crashing my Firefox and I have to force quit. It's really getting on my nerves. It's an online statement I'm trying to view and I want to get rid of that problem!! Is there anyway to change that option without going to that download page?

    I would recommend going into device manager on your PC and making sure that you have correctly installed the IR dongle. Also what version of hotsync manager are you currently using?

  • Trying to download a FIrefox and when I click on run it asks what program I want to use to open with so I cant finish install

    I've been using FF for years and lately have been having issues with internet access. Worked through the troubleshooting suggestions and got it working, but last night FF couldn't connect to internet after something updated and my Norton anti virus was gone too and I couldn't fix it. The last resort was to delete my ff and download new, so I did. When I clicked on run I got a pop up asking what program I wanted to open it with and of course nothing worked. By then it was 1:30 am so I quit. Today I'm having the same issue and I'm at the end of my rope trying to figure out what to do. I'm so disgusted and can't stand it.

    That's not consistent with what you wrote in your first message. I can't help you unless I know what's going on. Either you do, or do not, have backups of all the data you want to keep. If you do not, then the first thing you need to do is back up those files. It makes zero sense to do anything else. In order to back up, you'll need either of two things: another Mac, in working order, with a FireWire port and enough space on its internal drive to hold your files; or an external drive, also with enough space.
    On the other hand, if you do have backups, or if you simply don't care about any of the data, then the solution to your problem may be quite simple. All you have to do is boot from your installation disc (your profile says you're running Mac OS 10.5), erase your internal drive, reinstall the Mac OS, then restore your data from backup. You will need to be selective in restoring software, because incompatible software may be what caused the issue.
    But it's also possible that you have a hardware failure, in which case you can't get your computer working again until it's repaired.

    content-property is used in case of content repositories which has content repository items. Content repository is used just like regular SQL repositories. A content repository item can be thought as consisting of some content and its metadata. The content-property attribute is used in the content item-descriptor and is usually the name of the property that holds the content itself.
    E.g. "media" as you mentioned. Here the metadata might include properties like name, description, type, date of creation, keywords etc. while the content would include the binary-data of the media itself (in case of internal media type). So the declaration content-property="data" in the media item descriptor signifies that property called "data" in the media item will be holding the actual content. You can find more details about it and content repositories in the ATG Repository documentation.
