What do you do when u backed up your phone on iTunes but it doesn't work and you loose all your contacts

I have tried to download music onto my phone using iTunes on the laptop then when I plugged the phone in it had started to back up the phone but then when I went onto it it had cleared everything from the phone and swapped it with my old iPhone 4s's stuff but then when I looked on that phone everything was the same now I have lost everything and when I had a look on the computer it said I had not backed the phone up so I don't know what to do as I don't have iCloud or anything.

Mine too. At first, it would charge from my USB and now it won't even do that. When I try to charge it from a wall outlet, it alternates from the charging icon and a battery with an exclamation mark. It won't do anything else. Any help?

Go to your computer's System Tray and try ejecting. If you can't eject, there is an application that is trying to access your iPod.

Note that this is a good, general process any time you can't access any file.

Place the iPod in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

Hold HOME and START at the same time until an Apple logo appears. This is called a "reset", and essentially it reboots iOS. You will need to hold for about 10 seconds.

Apple can't/won't help you. The only way to get your phone officially unlocked is to contact the carrier your phone is locked to & see if they offer official unlocking. Some do, some don't. So, if you want your phone officially unlocked, you need to contact the carrier it is locked to.
There is no other way to get your phone officially unlocked.

You are not using iTunes Match are you? If you are, you have to turn it off on the device before you sync with iTunes but I'm not sure how that impacts manually managing music in iTunes. I would also assume that if you use Match, the songs would download from the cloud by using Match on the device.

This is sort of a long shot, but it's easy to try and won't hurt anything. Close all the apps on the iPad in the recents tray and reboot the iPad, then try again. I saw this work for someone else a while back that couldn't download or sync music, but I think it was probably just a coincidence, but as I said, it will not hurt to try.
Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the recents tray will appear with all of your recent apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

There are many ways to back up photos and contacts on an iPhone:
Photos - copy them to your computer with a USB cable; the phone will appear in Windows or Mac as a digital camera.
Photos - Enable Photo Stream, which saves them to iCloud and syncs to your computers(s)
Contacts - set to sync to any contact app on your computer (e.g., Outlook, Address Book)
Contacts - Enable sync to iCloud. This is real time and will always be up to date
Everything on the phone (including contacts and photos) - Back up to iTunes on your computer
Everything on the phone - Back up to iCloud
All of these are described in the manual.
If you did not do ANY of these then the contents are already lost.
