What does a backup contain?

I've searched the forums, but couldn't find the answer to this question. What does a backup contain? Specifically, I want to know if it contains contacts and calendar items. So, if I don't use Outlook, Entourage, etc., then I would not need to sync those items because they are already backed up in the iTunes backup. Does this make sense?

I did see that article on backups and restores, Jennifer B., but it didn't seem too conclusive on the issue. Because it didn't give an authoritative list, but said SOME information is backed up and listed a few of those items (it seemed, to me, to be hinting at more items being backed up). Maybe I'm being picky here where it may be clear enough and it simply doesn't backup contacts and calendar items.
However, I did find an article online where someone had converted the backup file for iTunes/iPhone into SQL and here is the listing of tables: http://www.uninnovate.com/iphonebackup_filelist.txt
Within that is a calendar and address book. Now, that doesn't actually mean that those tables are storing the contact information, but at the time I thought it would be evidence of that. (The main article is: http://www.uninnovate.com/2007/07/11/dear-iphone-give-me-my-data/)
So, you guys are the experts, if you can say assuredly that contacts and calendar items are not backed up in the iTunes backup, then so be it. I'll start syncing.

  • What does iTunes backup when you connect your iPhone

    Hi,
Can someone help me to understand the following two folders.
I have been using the iPhone since when it first came out (2007) and syncing with iTunes, one thing I havent understand is what is iTunes actually backing up when you connect your iPhone, does the backup contains everything in your iPhone?
In other words does the backup contains your iPhone apps, photos etc.?
    ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
The other folder I don't fully understand is the "Mobile Applications" folder, the reason for this question is because I relocated my default Media folder to an exteranl HD and when I sync my iPhone everything is fine I haven't had any problems but when I go and open this folder it has only a few apps but my iPhone has a lot more.
Why the amount of apps in my "Mobile Applications" folder doesn't match the amount of apps on my iPhone?
Can someone tell me what is this folder for?
    ...music/Media/Mobile Applications
    I'm currently running, iOS5
    Thanks a lot!

  • What does the backup conduit DO?

I'm confused about what the backup conduit does.
In other words if all conduits are set to synchronize, and the backup is set to HH overwrites desktop, what is that backup conduit doing?
I'm not sure if I'm asking the question the right way...I'm just not understanding how it's different than the rest of the conduits, and when it gets "used".

    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

the backup conduit backs everything else up. That's kind of the best way to put it, it backs up all ROM files and all of the third party applications you install to the device. If what is on your device doesn't come with it's own conduit such as datebook, address book etc then it is backed up within the backup conduit.

My back up is no longer working.  The errors that come up are "The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/apple’s iMac.sparsebundle” is already in use."  Does anyone know what this means?

It means that there are bugs in the operating system.

  • HT4847 what does icloud backup do?

What exactly does icloud do and why do I need it?

    Welcome to the Apple community.
You can use iCloud backup, to back up your mobile device. You can use the backup file to restore your device should you encounter problems with it. In many ways it does exactly the same as backing up to iTunes, but doesn't require you to own a computer.
Being able to back up to the cloud can be very useful, especially if you don't have access to a computer or have infrequent access to one, however unless you specifically need to use iCloud for back up, you will find backing up to iTunes significantly more convenient and possibly more reliable.

  • What does the Backup warning logo mean?

My Backup window has four plans, two of which seem to work:-
    Home Folder > Macintoch HD
Personal Data & Settings > iDisk
    but
Untitled > iDisk has a red exlamation mark and "failed" message
    while
Untitled 2 > USB_Pluscom (an external storage thingy) has a yellow triangle exclamation mark for "warnings during backup".
I don't know what to do. Is Backup the same thing as "Newton Backup Utility" which seems to be on my computer?

Ok, so you need more space in order to fit the backup.
Personally I use TimeMachine, it automatically deletes older backups when the target device runs out of space.
Unfortunately I am not familiar enough with iDisk to assist here.
In finder under devices you should see something similair to "macbook", when selecting this a Startup Volume will be listed to the right of Finder - this could be any name and will be the Hard Disk where your OS is installed (from your original post this seems to be Macintoch HD), first figure out which disks are which before deleting anything.
Like I said not familiar with iDisk at all.

when I see the usage on my iPod touch 4 they have categories for how much space is being used where. What does the "other" category contain? Like what could I delete on my iPod to get rid of the "other" category?

What is the Other on my iPhone and How to Remove It
An "other" larger than about 1 1/2 GB usually indicates that the "other" includes corrupted files.
    First try:
"First you go settings/general/usage/music/then left swipe over music and press delete and you would think it deletes your music but it doesn't instead it deletes your other but make sure your ipod is connected to a computer while doing this"
    as recommended by:

Next, usually restoring from backup eliminated the corrupted files. However, sometimes restoring to factory settings/new iPod is required.

Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

  • Backups - What exactly do they contain?

    Background:
I have Lightroom installed on my Desktop Computer and Laptop - both Windows.
I have two Libraries - both on External Hard Drives and all my images are stored on these EHD's.
I use 'Backup' within Lightroom and save the 'Backup' to a seperate partition of the Desktop Computer, I also make a copy of this to both EHD's.
My question: What information is contained within these 'Backup Files'? For instance, should I suffer a major Desktop Computer failure and need to re-install Lightroom are all the configuration settings i.e. the ID plate etc stored within the Backup file so that by double clicking on the Backup brings everything back to where it was previously etc or does it just contain information regarding the images themselves?
Sorry if this sounds pretty basic but it's been puzzling me for days now - perhaps a case of not seeing the woods for the trees :> )

OK - thanks Lee and DW. The way I work is to upload my images from a CF card into folders (either PC or Laptop) using other software. I then backup these image folders to DVD's before going any further and finally import into Lightroom.
In view of what is being said, it might also be prudent once I have carried out any work on those images etc to back them up once more but also include the xmp and Lightrooms backup files to DVD's as well.

  • I am trying to rebuild my iPhoto library and noticed my backup contains aliases (pointers?) and not the actual file. What's the best way to rebuild my library?

I am trying to rebuild my iPhoto library and noticed my backup contains aliases (pointers?) and not the actual file. What's the best way to rebuild my library?
    Facts:
In moving to a new iMac, I copied the iPhoto library to an external HDD assuming that I would point the new iMac to the backed up iPhoto Library
All worked fine when I pointed the new library but noticed that some folders contained aliases and not the original file. So when I attempt to open that photo it can't find it because the alias is pointing to another drive.
I do have all original photos from a couple of external HDDs. In the folders titled, "Originals" (from older versions of iPhoto) and "Masters" (from current iPhoto)
I'm thinking I can create a new folder and drop the original files and make that my new iPhoto library. Is there a better way to rebuild my library? I do not want to create any future aliases.
Thanks in advance for any help!

do you have a strongly recommended default "managed" library (the iPhoto preference to "copy imported items to the iPhoto library is in its checked state) or a referenced library - you have unchecked that option?
It sounds like you have a referenced library and are now experiancing one of the very siginificant drawbacks of a referenced library and one of the many reasons they are strongly not recommended
Also note that iPhoto '11 may use alises in the originals folder as part of the upgrade
It is important that we understand exactly what you have and what is not sorking - what error messages you are getting
You must NEVER make any changes of any sort to the structure of content of the iPhoto library - there are no user servicable parts in it  --  and you can not rebuild yoru librtary - only iPhoto ir iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  can rebuild a library unless you are a SQL programmer and understand the structure that iPhoto uses
