What does Developer Center outage say about the Cloud?

Why would anyone trust ANYTHING to the Cloud?
The Developer Center has been crippled for over two weeks.
Yes, some will smugly reply "it's working for me".
Lucky you.
But suppose you were one of those who have had ZERO access for over 2 weeks?
Why would anyone trust ANYTHING to the Cloud?

I can hear just fine . No need to yell.
If you call, you'll find out what they say. We're just users here.

  • What does Apple plan to do about the JAVA issue?

I was out of town on business last week and took my brand new MacBook Pro with me to stay connected to my work VPN.  However, I was unable to connect to the VPN the entire time I was away.  I found out from out IT department today that it is due to Apple not allowing any programs that require JAVA.  Is anyone else dealing with this issue?  What is being done about it?  If I cannot use my laptop to connect to my work VPN then it is useless to me.  If Apple does not come up with a solution quickly, I will be returning my brand new MacBook Pro for a windows based laptop that allows me to function at work.  This is a shame because I was very excited to have an apple laptop....very disappointing!

There was a major vulnerability in Java that was being actively exploited to drop malware on both Windows and Mac OS X. Oracle, who is responsible for Java, was slow to get a fix out, so Apple blocked the vulnerable versions of Java in the web browser. (Mozilla did the same with their Firefox browser.) Updates are now available for Java that work in Mac OS X again.
Java has been a repeat source of major vulnerabilities and malware over the last couple years. It is EXTREMELY insecure. If your business is relying on web-based Java applets for secure communications, your business' IT department is collectively insane.

    Hi,
It could be some sort of "flagging" issue where either the AIM Servers have gone out of sync and you are getting two lots of info  (There are about three or four servers involved with getting data to your Buddy list)
I can also see the possibility where you have a Contact in your Address Book who has two Screen Names.
You have one in one group and in another they appear to be Off Line.  However iChat will still Link them and Show their Capabilities when you Right Click.
One way of checking this is to double click them to open a Text Chat Window.
At the top is the Recipients Bar  (See View Menu when  Text Chat is Open).
This gives you the option to chose a different Buddy Name if the contact has two  (It offers To and From options if you both have Multiple Accounts).
Pic of an Old Chat to someone with Multiple "Names"
They have an @Mac.com name and  Jabber ID  (As it is an Old Chat the Jabber one is Off Line and their @mac.com name is currently "Away"
You can see I have a Google and three AIM Logins I could use to Speak to them.

It means that your iPod Hardisk has crashed and cant be started, you need to have the Hardisk replaced at Apple Store or any 3rd Party iPod service, if it is out of warranty.

It is just part of the XML specification; to do a "doctype", you must have an open angle bracket followed by an exclamation point. See [doctype decl | http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-xml/#NT-doctypedecl] for more information.

  • What does this mean "We apologize for the inconvenience, but the ability to order books and prints is no longer supported in iPhoto 5. Please upgrade to a newer version of iPhoto to order these products.

what does this mean "We apologize for the inconvenience, but the ability to order books and prints is no longer supported in iPhoto 5. Please upgrade to a newer version of iPhoto to order these products." I want to buy a photo book and that message keeps popping up.

TD, LN - You guys make great points and I will take you at your word. Normally, I would not hesitate to update. I have a lot at stake here with a large vacation coming up with a great many new pictures anticipated. I don't know enough to understand what is meant by "verifying my library." Please give me some insight there and I will start the upgrade process tonight! Seriously, I have wanted to do this for some time, but have been scared away by reading too many situations on these forums.
TD - you have a good sense of humor. I know all versions eventually need to be left to die away. Support is not eternal. I am sure I missed the announcement that certain versions of iPhoto would no longer offer the ability to conveniently make cards, calendars, books, etc. Like the original poster, I was surprised to learn my version did not offer that functionality only by requesting it and getting denied. Sort of frosted me at the time, as you can tell by my original reply here.
If anyone can help me with the "verifying" question, I'll get off of here and let the original poster have his thread back!

Nothing.  The 2nd Gen Touch is OBSOLETE and is WAY past its support life.  If you want to run the newer apps you have to buy a newer iPod.

  • When my wife tries to update one of her apps a strange Apple ID pops up. Her Apple ID is correct in settings and in the apple store. What does this mean? Where did the other one come from?

When my wife tries to update one of her apps a strange Apple ID pops up. Her Apple ID is correct in settings and in the apple store. What does this mean? Where did the other one come from?

There is something on your iPhone (a music file, iBook, document or video) that belongs to another Apple ID.  Only your wife would know how that file arrived there.  Your iPhone is asking for the correct Apple ID for all of the files that are resident on the iPhone.

  • What does "waiting" mean when its on the screen instead of an app logo/picture?

I'm a new user of the iphone.  After downloading some apps I have a block(where normally is the name of the app) that is grey'd out and is labled "waiting".  What does this mean?  Thanks.

Means the app is trying to download to the phone. If this has been some time, you might want to reset the phone and see if you can complete the download. The other alternative is to open iTunes on the computer, go to check for available downloads and then connect the phone to the computer and sync.

Delete the track from the iTunes library, but not from the cloud.

  • I want to know what does Apple have to say to us, the consumer, about the "dirty dozen" list?

Anybody can tell me what about the "dirty dozen" list, and our privacy using "Safari ", from Apple?

Here is some info about it.
    http://www.thetechherald.com/article.php/201046/6428/Is-it-fair-to-judge-softwar e-based-on-reported-vulnerabilities
Bit9 said that to qualify, an application had to have a vulnerability with a CVSS score of 7-10 reported between January 1, 2010 through October 21, 2010.
When asked how many of the vulnerabilities in the list have been patched, Bit9 said they did not have those details. Harry Sverdlove, the CTO at Bit9 did comment that while the patched vs. unpatched data isn’t fully available, almost all of the NIST reported vulnerabilities have been patched.
For us, the more interesting view is to look at how many of those Apple-based vulnerabilities sill exist, and how long did it take Apple to fix them.
IBM looked at the number of reported vulnerabilities in the first half of 2010, and then graded the vendor on their patch response. According to IBM’s figures, Google, Apple, Adobe, Mozilla, and Microsoft scored well when it came to addressing issues. Very well.
By the end of the first half of 2010, Apple and Google patched 100-percent of the high risk vulnerabilities reported. Adobe had patched 98-percent of them, while Microsoftpatched 93 percent, and Mozilla had patched 96-percent.
So if, as the IBM report shows, the vendors are quick to patch, once again we have to ask if a high number of reported vulnerabilities means that a given vendor’s software is riddled with issues and should be avoided. The answer is no.
Software will always have flaws. It isn’t the number of problems that matters. It is how long a vendor takes to address and fix those problems that counts. According to IBM, there have been a record number of vulnerability disclosures this year.
At the same time, the vendors hardest hit by those disclosures, the same vendors on the Bit9’s Dirty Dozen, fixed things the fastest. So to some, it is worth the risk to use the software listed in the Dirty Dozen, as the vendors use both proactive and reactive measures when it comes to security.

  • What's Apple saying about the 34 admitted errors in Intel CPUs?

I'm reading a lot about Core Duo and Core Solo errors. 34 of them. Intel intends to fix just one of them.
I'm yet to find an Apple article on the issue.
I had been contemplating adding an Intel Mac to my stable but I'm pretty certain I'll not be rushing into this until Apple makes a statement to relieve my concerns.
    PMG5 2x2.5 +30 Cinema   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Well, I'm not so sure. Owners of new Intel Macs
certainly appear to be having problems.
Those problems are unrelated to the flaws in the Core Duo.
Processor flaws are "normal", you can't build a chip with several million transistors on it without there being a few problems. That said, the flaws are really edge cases and you'd have to be doing something downright weird to encounter most of them.
It's also worth noting that more than half of the flaws can only be encountered if the processor is in debug mode.
I'll wait for the Apple statement.
I very much doubt you'll get one. They didn't release a statement for the 24 known flaws in the G5 or the 36 known flaws in the G4.
If you hold off buying a computer because the processor has flaws then you'll never buy a computer.
I suspect what's happened here is that a journalist who doesn't understand what's going on found an Intel errata sheet and started yelling about the sky falling. Since most people never hear about these flaws they assume that they're indicative of a broken design. The truth is that nothing is out of the ordinary, there is nothing to be worried about.
