What exactly a Web Application is?

Can we treet each use case as a seperate WebApplication in a small project which contains only 3-usecases.
And what exactly a web application is?,What are configuration files?
thanks & regards,
Santhosh

Hi Santhosh,
Perhaps you could research your question using the J2EE tutorial located at http://java.sun.com/j2ee/1.4/docs/tutorial/doc/index.html
Chapter 3 has a web app introduction and there are other chapters concerning specific web-app technologies.

  • What is a Web Application?

    hi there
i'd like to build a web application, like the bookstore example that i downloaded in this site.
i saw that all the code and folder are united into a .war file
    how to do it?
web application are only for jdk Enterprise Edition or also for the Standard one?
    thanx a lot
    sandro

place the WAR file into the /webapps folder of your tomcat installation and restart tomcat. With default installation of tomcat, the WAR file should be extracted.

  • Deploy web application with exploded directory format

I am quite new with Oracle9iAS Containers for J2EE. Currently, my project is not using EJB, only JSP and Servlets. I want to deploy the war file with exploded directory format. I don't want to use the default web application directory j2ee/home/default-web-app. The "Using Oracle9iAS Containers for J2EE" get start documentation only explained how to deploy J2ee application. What about the web application without EJB jar file? Anybody knows how to do that. Please let me know.
    Thanks in advance.

Though you don't have ejbs, you can still use the ear file format. This would be most convenient way of deploying.
Use of a tool like Ant is recommended if you are not using JDeveloper.
Also, you can findinfo on deploying using a exploded directory
    http://otn.oracle.com/docs/tech/java/oc4j/htdocs/getstart.htm#1027810
But recommed having ear file as it is convenient. If you want to see an example of use of Ant and deploying using ear file

  • What's the difference between a web site and a web application?

I'm stumped trying to come up to a difference between a web site and a web application for myself. As I see it, a web site points to a specific page and a web application is more of some sort of 'portal' to content and information.
But where I'm stuck is that a web application is still viewed through a browser (is it not?) and a web site can still view content dynamically, making the line between web site and application prety gray.
For instance, does a web site using ASP.NET or AJAX (I assume ASP.NET is AJAX's proprietary sibling, if not, ignore ASP.NET AND concentrate on the AJAX), becomes a web application because it can retrieve data dynamically and asynchronously or would a website
using PHP and a CMS be more of a web application because it forms the pages on request, based on the request of the client and its content in its databse?
Or maybe I'm totally wrong here - what differenciates between a web application and a website?

This is totally personal and subjective, but I'd say that a website is defined by its content, while a webapplication is
defined by its interaction with the user. That is, a website can plausibly consist of a static content repository that's dealt out to all visitors, while a web application depends on interaction and requires programmatic user input and data processing.
For example, a news site would be a "website", but a spreadsheet or a collaborative calendar would be web "applications". The news site shows essentially the same information to all visitors, while the calendar processes individual data.
Practically, most websites with quickly changing content will also rely on a sophisticated programmatic (and/or database) backend, but at least in principle they're only defined by their output. The web application on the other hand is essentially a program that
runs remotely, and it depends fundamentally on a processing and a data storage backend.

There is no real "difference". Web site is a more anachronistic term that exists from the early days of
the internet where the notion of a dynamic application that can respond to user input was much more limited and much less common. Commercial websites started out largely as interactive brochures (with the notable exception of hotel/airline reservation sites).
Over time their functionality (and the supporting technologies) became more and more responsive and the line between an application that you install on your computer and one that exists in the cloud became more and more blurred.
If you're just looking to express yourself clearly when speaking about what you're building, I would continue to describe something that is an interactive brochure or business card as a "web site" and something that actually *does something that feels
more like an application as a web app.
The most basic distinction would be if a website has a supporting database that stores user data and modifies what the user sees based on some user specified criteria, then it's probably an app of some sort (although I would be reluctant to describe Amazon.com
as a web app, even though it has a lot of very user-specific functionality). If, on the other hand, it is mostly static .html files that link to one another, I would call that a web site.
Most often, these days, a web app will have a large portion of its functionality written in something that runs on the client (doing much of the processing in either javascript or actionscript, depending on how its implemented) and reaches back through some
http process to the server for supporting data. The user doesn't move from page to page as much and experiences whatever they're going to experience on a single "page" that creates the app experience for them.

...can i make as many iweb websites as i want? ...and as many blogs as i want? ...i have never made one before....
....although, i do have my own small business and i do have a website that i paid a guy to make and also host....(which is a waste of $$$$ in my opinion as i think i can do a better job making one myself through iweb) ....
...anyways, i know it is splitting hairs but what exactly is the diff b/w a blog and a website ....i am under the impression that a blog is just a personal newsletter sort of thing,...?

  • What is the correct way to set a web application to use HTTP or HTTPS?

In the past I've always created an HTTP web application as the default zone. Then extended the web app, creating a new IIS website on port 443 and enabled SSL. This seems to have worked fine, but I recently read an article stating that it is not good to
extend a web app unless absolutely necessary. So can someone tell me what the proper way is to configure a single web application to work with HTTP and HTTPS?

Extending the web application to support both HTTP and HTTPS is a perfectly good method and in fact is the only way to have a web application support both so what you've done is fine.
If the web application will only use HTTPS, you can set this up when you first create the web application. Specify port 443 and the SSL option (and ensure the URL has an https://) when creating the web application. You'll need to install the certificate
in IIS once the web application has been created.

  • Looking for advice on what which freamework or dev. methodology for read only database centric web application

Hello, I hope the experts here can advise me on which development approach for a new .net web application that  I am to begin development shortly.  I have the back end stored procedures complete and now I will build a .net front end.
This front end will be 95% populating custom html5/css3/jquery pages from c# DataSets which are themselves populated from calls to oracle stored procesures.  There will be no updating - this is read-only querries of OLTP prpared tables off of a data
warehouse schema.  I am a verteran at the back end stuff but my web app development skills are new so I hope to get a recommendation form the experts on what approach I should persue to build the front end.  From what I have seen I might start
with MVC5 framework and build the web pages with RAZOR embedded c# code looping through the DataSets to create the html. I need to the ability to create very custom div elements throughout, so I understand I should not use some high level code generation
tool.  Thanks so much for the feedback.

  • What is the best solution to create SharePoint Extranet Application for existing windows web application ?

    Hello,
At present my SharePoint farm is having following domains:
    1) Internal Domain - Domain1
    2) External Trusted Domain - Domain2
And Following Intranet WebApplications having Windows Mode Authentication:
    1) http://mywebapp1.Domain1.com - Single site collection
    2) http://mywebapp2.Domain1.com - Multiple site collections
    3) http://mywebapp3.Domain1.com - Multiple site collections
Both Domain1 and Domain2 users are able to access above web applications.
Now , we have requirement to add other trusted domains Domain3 , Domain4...etc. and create Extranet Application and I have following questions :
What kind of topology and Authentication is required ?
AD as User Identity storage location is better way for all other domains since there is trust ?
Do I need to just extend all the web applications in extra net zone and create site collection for different domains to isolate security and content as per the need ?
Is there any other best solution to implement extranet application under current environment ?
what kind of other factors are important to consider in order to create extranet application ?
Your help will be highly appreciated.
    Thanks and Kind Regards,
    Dipti Chhatrapati

    Hi Tom,
I have following information till now:
External domain will be trusted with parent domain where SharePoint is installed.
Authentication of external domain will be Windows Authentication.
User Identity storage location will be Active Directory of external  domain.
Site to be accessed by external domain will be http://mywebapp1.Domain1.com
    Now question is :
Should I assign external AD group ( Domain2ADGroups ) to SP Web Application  http://mywebapp1.Domain1.com
    OR
Should I extend the application in extranet zone for external domain and then assign permission to extended
    application ?
I guess , if authentication is same then no need to extend the application - correct ?
Thank you to look at this thread !

  • Third Party Applications? What exactly are they?

    Right,
I've read alot about the Blue Screen that appears when Upgrading to OSX Leopard. I am intending on upgrading tomorrow when my external hard drive arrives so I can Clone my 10.4.11 onto the external hard drive and upgrade the cloned version first but would like to know if I can check in advance for any of these' Third party App's'? and what exactly are they?
    Regards,

A third party application is anything not made by Apple. It can also include products that Apple purchased fairly recently (some of those "Pro" apps) that weren't coded to Apple's specfications and haven't been well tested. Apple doesn't and shouldn't test their software with third party applications. It isn't their job to test other people's software. They probably make exceptions for things like Office and Photoshop, but that is a short list.
Most third party applications will be fine. The ones you have to worry about are those that ask for your password when you install them. They can then install any sort of incompatible software.
After you clone your hard drive, verify that you can boot from the external drive and all your data is there. If so, don't upgrade the external drive. Boot using the 10.5 DVD and immediately run Disk Utility and re-partition your internal hard drive to wipe it out completely. Then install Leopard. Do not use Migration Assistant. Re-install all your 3rd party applications that are 10.5 compatible. Be very careful about copying over from backup anything in a Library/Preferences folder. You can copy any preference file from a third party application back over - those are safe. Anything from Apple may have been upgraded. Only copy over the Apple files that you absolutely have to, such as your Mail folder and Address book file, for example.
It sounds like a lot of work but it will only take a couple of hours.

              weblogic.jsp.encoding to GB2312 , when the jsp file contain's chinese , the

when I use request.getParameter("SomeFormElement")(the element inputed

How should I set weblogic.jsp.encoding value to satisfy all this problem?
When I set the value to ISO-8859, there is an exception:
              java.io.UnsupportedEncodingException: Charset: 'ISO-8859' not recognized,

    hi ,
i think the best way is to create java beans ,in that bean call your EJB ,
and check the validation over there.
and make that bean scope to session.
in each and everypage try to check the session ,if it is not valid then forward to your login page...
otherwise continue to give access to him like guest

    Hi,
It could be problem with either Support package which you are using for BI or Front end patch which you need to install for GUI.
please check with minimal installations and let me know with current support package and FEP you are using.

  • What is the best way of persisting Web-application related data?

My web-application needs to persist some data (a set of XML documents), i.e. save them so that they can survive server or application shutdowns. Saving those documents as files in server's filesystem does not seem to be convinient to me because the container may run the application directly form WAR and it is impossible (maybe I am wrong?) to modify files inside WAR archive. Forcing WAR extraction requires container reconfiguration and is container implementation dependent, which is not acceptable.
What would be ideal is some individual persistent storage bound to an application which does not require any external enitites (external databases etc). And this storage should not depend on any particular implementation of servlet container.
So is there a way to do something like this?

Saving it to disk seems like your only alternative.
Presuming you have at least some control over the machine where it is deployed to, you could specify a directory to save the xml documents to (ie not one under your web application structure) This would get around the limitations of the WAR file not being extracted.
Make the directory an environment variable/init parameter in your web.xml file.
All you need then is a directory on the server that you have write permissions to.
Ok it requires more setup when deploying the web application, but I thinks its about the only way to accomplish what you want to do.
