What is a daemon thread in java ?
What is a daemon thread in java ? Explain with a small example.
Any thread marked as a daemon. There is nothing special about it. The only intersting thing is that the Java VM terminates if no non-daemon thread is running. So you usually use a daemon thread for bookkeeping tasks, so that this thread doesn't prevent the VM from successfully terminating.

What is a daemon thread?
hi all,
can somebody plz tell me what is daemon thread and what is the difference between daemon thread a user thread. thanx in advance..Daemons are background programs that run all the time
during up-time, ready to do something that may be
required at any point. These are NOT limited to the
JVM, but the concept is mirrored in teh ability to
set a java thread as daemon, as the JVM is just that:
a Virtual Machine that mimics an environment.
Correspondingly OSs have daemon processes (called
d services on windows) e.g. for printing. Calling
Thread.setDaemon() will I believe mark the thread as
to not be destroyed until VM shutdown, and will not
itself stop shutdown of the VM if it is still running.Maybe I got confused by all those nots but if the only threads running are daemon
threads, the VM is allowed to stop; I made that mistake myself several times.
This is what I ripped from the API docs:
The Java Virtual Machine continues to execute threads until either of the following occurs:
- The exit method of class Runtime has been called and the security manager has permitted the exit operation to take place.
- All threads that are not daemon threads have died, either by returning from the call to the run method or by throwing an exception that propagates beyond the run method.
It's the "continues to execute until' ... 'all threads that are *not* daemon threads
have died" part. They should have worded that a bit less cryptic ;-)
kind regards,
Jos
ps. First I thought daemon threads run under your bed while drooling sometimes ;-) -
Hello,
I'm working on a large scale GUI and running in to OOMs. Looking at the threads, there are hundreds of them sitting around named Java FX task daemon thread.

I tracked down what was happening by getting the exit value of the java process - which may give you information regarding what happened to the process.
For example, if CTRL+C was pressed you get a value of 130 returned in the Linux environment. Using this error information I found out why my server kept dying (which was the XP telnet window was sending dodgy key presses to the window the server was running in).
The exit code of a process is available after it exits via $status in Unix or %errorlevel% in a PC .bat file. -
Thread pool of daemon threads?
If I create a Thread, it can be made a daemon thread by invoking setDaemon(true). But what if I create a thread pool via java.util.concurrent.Executors.newFixedThreadPool(NTHREADS)? How can those threads be made daemon threads?
CByThanks Joachim! I didn't know that the newFixedThreadPool method was overloaded.

Help with "Exception in thread "Thread-4" java.lang.NullPointerException"
I am new to Java and I am trying a simple bouncing ball example from Stanford. Here is their simple example that works.
import acm.program.*;
import acm.graphics.*;
import java.awt.*;
public class BouncingBallWorking extends GraphicsProgram {
/** sets diameter */
private static final int DIAM_BALL = 30;
/** amount y velocity is increased each cycle */
private static final double GRAVITY = 3;
/** Animation delay or pause time between ball moves */
private static final int DELAY = 50;
/** Initial X and Y location ball*/
private static final double X_START = DIAM_BALL / 2;
private static final double Y_START = 100;
private static final double X_VEL = 3;
private static final double BOUNCE_REDUCE = 0.9;
private double xVel = X_VEL;
private double yVel = 0.0;
private GOval BallA;
public void run() {
setup(X_START,Y_START);
// Simulation ends when ball goes off right hand
// end of screen
while (BallA.getX() < getWidth()) {
moveBall(BallA);
checkForCollision(BallA);
pause(DELAY);
private void setup(double X_coor, double Y_coor) {
BallA = new GOval(X_coor, Y_coor, DIAM_BALL, DIAM_BALL);
add(BallA);
private void moveBall(GOval BallObject) {
yVel += GRAVITY;
BallObject.move(xVel,yVel);
private void checkForCollision(GOval BallObject) {

yVel = - yVel * BOUNCE_REDUCE;
double diff = BallObject.getY() - (getHeight() - DIAM_BALL);
BallObject.move(0, -2 * diff);
} Now I am trying to modify "setup" so it I can create several balls. I made a simple modification to "setup" and now I am getting an error.

Can you describe why I am getting an error? Thanks.
Here is what I changed.
Before:
private void setup(double X_coor, double Y_coor) {
BallA = new GOval(X_coor, Y_coor, DIAM_BALL, DIAM_BALL);
add(BallA);
}After:
private void setup(double X_coor, double Y_coor, GOval BallObject) {

That is great! Thanks. I've got two question though.
1.) Now I want to have 100 bouncing balls. Is the best way to achieve this is through an array of GOvals? I haven't gotten to the lecture on arrays on Stanford's ITunesU site yet so I am not sure what is possible with what I know now.An array would work, or a List. But it doesn't matter much in this case.
2.) Are references being passed by value only applicable to Java or is that common to object-oriented programming? Also is there a way to force Java to pass in "BallA" instead of the value "null"?I can't say about all OO languages as a whole, but at least C++ can pass by reference.
And no, there's no way to pass a reference to the BallA variable, so the method would initialize it and it wouldn't be null anymore.
When you call the method with your BallA variable, the value of the variable is examined and it's passed to the method. So you can't pass the name of a variable where you'd want to store some object you created in the method.
But you don't need to either, so there's no harm done. -
HELP Needed with this error: Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClass
Folks,
I am having a problem connecting to my MSDE SQL 2000 DB on a WindowsXP pro. environment. I am learning Java and writing a small test prgm to connect the the database. The code compiles ok, but when I try to execute it i keep getting this error:
"Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: Test1"
I am using the Microsoft jdbc driver and my CLASSPATH is setup correctly, I've also noticed that several people have complained about this error, but have not seen any solutions....can someone help ?
Here is the one of the test programs that I am using:
import java.sql.*;
* Microsoft SQL Server JDBC test program
public class Test1 {
public Test1() throws Exception {
// Get connection
DriverManager.registerDriver(new
com.microsoft.jdbc.sqlserver.SQLServerDriver());
Connection connection = DriverManager.getConnection(
"jdbc:microsoft:sqlserver://LAPTOP01:1433","sa","sqladmin");
if (connection != null) {
System.out.println();
System.out.println("Successfully connected");
System.out.println();
// Meta data
DatabaseMetaData meta = connection.getMetaData();
System.out.println("\nDriver Information");
System.out.println("Driver Name: "
+ meta.getDriverName());
System.out.println("Driver Version: "
+ meta.getDriverVersion());
System.out.println("\nDatabase Information ");
System.out.println("Database Name: "
+ meta.getDatabaseProductName());
System.out.println("Database Version: "+
meta.getDatabaseProductVersion());
} // Test
public static void main (String args[]) throws Exception {
Test1 test = new Test1();I want to say that there was nothing wrong
with my classpath config., I am still not sure why
that didn't work, there is what I did to resolved
this issue.You can say that all you like but if you are getting NoClassDefFound errors, that's because the class associated with the error is not in your classpath.
(For future reference: you will find it easier to solve problems if you assume that the problem is your fault, instead of trying to blame something else. It almost always is your fault -- at least that's been my experience.)
1. I had to set my DB connection protocol to TCP/IP
(this was not the default), this was done by running
the
file "svrnetcn.exe" and then in the SQL Server Network
Utility window, enable TCP/IP and set the port to
1433.Irrelevant to the classpath problem.
2. I then copied all three of the Microsoft JDBC
driver files to the ..\jre\lib\ext dir of my jdk
installed dir.The classpath always includes all jar files in this directory. That's why doing that fixed your problem. My bet is that you didn't have the jar file containing the driver in your classpath before, you just had the directory containing that jar file.
3. Updated my OS path to located these files
and....BINGO! (that simple)Unnecessary for solving classpath problems.
4. Took a crash course on JDBC & basic Java and now I
have created my database, all tables, scripts,
stored procedures and can read/write and do all kinds
of neat stuff.All's well that ends well. After a few months you'll wonder what all the fuss was about. -
Hi
I am trying to use type 4 driver to connect to my Oracle 9i Rel2 database. I downloaded the odbc14.jar from oracle and added in the C:\Oracle9i\jdbc\lib path. As on the website, I setup my environment:
Setting Up Your Environment
On Win95/Win98/NT:
- Add [ORACLE_HOME]\jdbc\lib\classes111.zip and
[ORACLE_HOME]\jdbc\lib\nls_charset11.zip to your CLASSPATH.
(Add classes12.zip and nls_charset12.zip if JDK 1.2.x or 1.3 is
used. Add ojdbc14.jar and nls_charset12.zip if JDK 1.4 is used.)
- Make sure [ORACLE_HOME]\bin is in your PATH.

sorry
iam getting the error:
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException: 1
at Driver.main(Driver.java:38)So meaning this line cause the exception:
String t=bis[1].trim(); // hard-coded int literal 1That happens because, in line 36,
String[] bis = bit[j].split(":");What will happen if the delimiter ':' is not found? It will return an array with a size of 1, and at this time referencing index 1 is out of bound, remember that the upper bound of an array is its size-1. One workaround is to put a selection structure after line 36.
if (bis != null && bis.length == 2) {
String t=bis[1].trim();
bits[j]=t;
}Then, recompile your code and try again. -

public static int getInt() throws IOException
System.out.println("Input your data:");
String st = getString();
return Integer.parseInt(st);//this is 208 row
}It may be that the code in getString() returns a
String that ends with a newline. If that is the
problem, you can use
return (Integer.parseInt(st)).trim();1. getString will never return a String ending in newline. BufferedReader.readLine strips off the newline.
2. Even if you had a newline, String.trim doesn't trim newlines.
3. You would need to trim the String, not the int:
return (Integer.parseInt(st.trim()));As JimDinosaur said, you are passing bad data (the value of "st").
In getInt, add this before trying to parse "st":
System.out.println("###"+st+"###");What does it print? -

copying it into the /usr/lib folder and without ldconfig?

please somebody help me, this thing is due tomorrow I need help asap!First, whenever you post, there is a link for Formatting Help. This link takes you to here: http://forum.java.sun.com/features.jsp#Formatting and tells you how to use the code and /code tags so any code you post will be easily readable.
Your problem is this: ShoppingApp has a ShoppingCart and ShoppingCart is a ShoppingApp - that is ShoppingCart extends ShoppintApp. You are saying that ShoppingCart is a ShoppingApp - which probably doesn't make sense. But the problem is a child class always calls one of its parent's constructors. So when you create a ShoppingApp, the ShoppingApp constructor tries to create a ShoppingCart. The ShoppingCart calls its superclass constructor, which tries to create a ShoppingCart, which calls its superclass constructor, which tries to create a ShoppingCart, which...
It seems like ShoppingCart should not extend ShoppingApp. -
How to Handle Multiple Thread in JAVA Callout with OSB 11g
Hi Team,
With My OSB 11g, I want create a static Thread when Java callout.
Java code as below.
private static Thread thread;
static {
* lazy load thread and with thread-safe ensure
if(thread == null){
synchronized (HornetQConnectionHelper.class) {
thread = new ConnectionRecoveryThread();
// Daemon thread, JVM level, Won't be interrupted, Safe!
thread.setDaemon(true);
thread.start();
When this class was first called in OSB, the thread start run. while when I redeploy it, the old Thread is still running, if call the class again, it will create a new Thread. The two threads will run at the same time.
Any body know how do configure it, so that there is only one static Thread in the Weblogic JVM.
Thanks.
