What is best way to manage multiple projects with limited HD space?

I am running Premiere Elements 3 on a HP desktop with a 250 GB hard drive.  I also have a 500 GB external HD attached.  The main desktop HD is filled up with programs, photos, and current video projects for PE 3.  PE seems to work best when it can access files from the internal HD and not have to access them from an external HD.  Since I have many video projects going now, I cannot keep all the clips on the desktop HD so have put them on the external HD.  I used to keep just backups on the external HD, but now have to keep some of the original copies of clips and projects as well.  So when running PE3 I have to copy things back and forth to the desktop computer HD so I can run it without it needing to access the external HD.  This takes alot of time.
Is there a better way to do things?  What is the best strategy for running PE when HD space on your computer is limited?  Do I need to free up much more of my 250 GB internal HD space so I can run all current projects from there?  And what is the best strategy for backing up my clips and projects.  Multiple external HDs?  Thanks for any advice on file and project management.

First, welcome to the forum.
I do just as Steve suggests, though for slightly different reasons. I need each Project to be portable between my laptop and my workstation. I have a couple dozen 1 - 2TB FW-800 external 7200RPM HDD's, so each Project goes onto one of these. Obviously with the size, I can group several normal Projects onto the same external.
In my case, most of my Assets are stored on a NAS drive, and I will copy these over to the appropriate Project folder structure on the externals. If I have done Capture, those files will be in the Project's folder structure too. My stock stuff is always a copy, as will be my still images. Each Project has a root folder with its name and then appropriate sub-folders, i.e. Stills, Music, etc. below that root folder. All stays together.
One trick for my case is that each external has the same exact drive letter assignment in the OS of each of my computers, so that external Z:\ is Z:\ on all computers. This must be done at the OS-level for all computers. I use labels on each external, so I know that I have Z:\, or Y:\ plugged in.
For editing, this is not the most efficient way to handle Projects, or Assets. In a perfect world, one would have their OS and programs on C:\, their media on a RAID 0 D:\, their Projects and Scratch Disks on E:\, their Exports on F:\ and maybe their audio on another RAID 0 G:\. All original Assets would be backed up to maybe a NAS unit. This would give the greatest efficiencey, but would kill my portability. I pay a price in efficiency, so that I can spend much of the day by the pool on the laptop and then move the complete Project, along with all copies of all Assets and Scratch Disks upstairs to the editing suite. The workstation is setup like my ideal, but if I have a Project on it (using all of the resources of that machine and it's multiple HDD's), I cannot easily move down to the laptop - so I sacrifice the speed for the portability.
One comment on using externals: FW-800 works fine for me. All of my newer external HDD's have that connection and each computer has either a FW-800 card, or ExpressCard. The use of eSATA would be even better, but I have a major investment in FW-800, so I have to consider that legacy. Someday, they'll all be eSATA, or whatever comes next. I found that FW-400 was too slow for me, so I relegated those older externals to just archive. Years ago, I tried USB externals, but found that I have problems with them, plus the connection speed was painfully slow. I gave up completely on those. I do not think that I have any USB only externals left. Goodwill got them all. I also tried to edit to/from my gigabit NAS and gave up on that because of the speed. It now is a storage unit for stock Assets that are copied over to the Project folders.
If you have USB externals, give them a try. Just be a bit careful, especially if you have a faster computer, as that connection can cause problems if the data stream gets too big and too fast for the connection. Things will definitely go wrong at some point in a read/write cycle. Be very careful and keep copies of all irreplaceable Assets and also your Project files. Little is worse than having something get corrupted because the USB connection could not keep up. I've even had overloaded USB's shut down the entire system in a BSOD. Not very comforting, when you just completed 6 hours of editing!
Good luck, and hope that some of this helps,
Hunt

  • What is the best way to manage multiple devices with one iMac - different users with seperate itunes accounts or one mac user with different itune logons and libraries?

    Hello
    I have just purchased an imac which I am very happy with.  In our household we also have two iphones (one mine and one husbands) and one ipod (my sons). We all have individual itunes accounts set up on our previous computer (not a mac). We have sepereate apps and music, although there may be the odd occasion where we would like to share a song (if this is possible) across devices.
    I am just wondering the best way to manage these devices using the new imac.  Should I create individual accounts to logon to the imac, then from within these launch our own itunes accounts and sync our devices with these.  Or should I be using one version of itunes, logging on to this with our different itunes usernames and storing things in libraries.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    I am presuming that we cannot share downloaded apps and music between accounts because of the copyright issue,
    Though I'm no copyright lawyer, as long as it's within a household, you can share content among users. Such sharing is, absent specific language preventing it not present in the iTunes Store terms of use, generally considered to be "personal use". So you can share apps and music amongst your users on your computer and with their devices. You just can't give any of that content to friends or relatives who don't live with you.
    What I am not clear on, it making sure that this appears in each itunes account - is it easy to find the file storage folders that match the itunes accounts and what would these be?
    The iTunes library and files are by default in a user's Home/Music folder. But you don't have to find the folder; in fact putting a file into the folder yourself won't add the file to iTunes. Just drag the file into the iTunes window. iTunes will copy it to the correct location.

  • What is the best way to manage multiple ipods using the same itunes?

    Hi Everyone
    i am trying to manage three different ipods through the one Itunes, all with very different tastes, not sure if I am doing it the best or easiest way so does anybody have a simple solution on what you're supposed to do, to keep it all simple!
    Cheers
    Liv

    If you have created a new Windows user account you need to log out and then log back in with your original user name. By default each Windows profile will have an independent iTunes library.
    If instead you managed to create a new library within the same profile. click the icon to start iTunes and immediately press and hold down the shift key, keep holding until asked to create or choose a library. Click Choose and navigte back to your original which should be at <User's Music>\iTunes.
    Your question as posed was:
    What is the best way to manage multiple iPods using the same iTunes {library}?
    in which case Selected Playlists is probably the best approach. Simply create a playlist for each device, Alice's iPod, Bob's iPhone etc. and sync the device with the appropriate list.

  • Whats the best way to manage 100s of thumbnails?

    I'm trying to build a simple photo management app in java, like Picasa2. I want to be able to scroll through 100s of thumbnails. Whats the best way to manage them from a memory standpoint?
    a) can I load up 100s of thumbnails into a JScrollPane? If so, will it do anything special to manage memory for the thumbnails that are offscreen?
    b) should I just draw up a grid of JLabels and page through them like you would in html?
    Is there another approach? Is there any special way to manage the thumbnails that are offscreen (besides loading them all in memory ) and still get a fast response time?
    BTW, if anyone wants to join me in this project, I'm happy to opensource and share.

    Because for some of us, it takes a lot longer than 5 mins. Besides, I was on someone else's computer.
    Regardless, I've implemented JList for images, and it works really well. For those of you who are following in my footsteps, the answer is:
    JList renders ImageIcons by default.
    If you want to render a JLabel with an ImageIcon set to an image, you need to write a custom ListCellRenderer, but it turns out that is not too hard. But here is a follow-up problem:
    My app has JLabels that subscribe to an ImageLoader that loads images in the background. On init() the JLabel just has the ImageIcon set to a placeholder image:
              myJLabel.imgIcon = new ImageIcon();
              myJLabel.imgIcon.setImage( myPlaceholderImage );
    However, once the actual image is loaded, I call a refresh method to set the ImageIcon to a new image:
              myJLabel.imgIcon.setImage( myLoadedBufferedImage );
    My problem is getting the JList to render the updated JLabel. Right now, I keep a reference to the JList with myJLabel and call revalidate() on refresh, but that doesn't seem very clean.
    Is there an easy/natural place to get the JList to revalidate()?
    Can I easily know which JLabels are in the viewport of the JList scrollpane? That way I could revalidate only the visible JLabels or when scrolling.

    That depends on what kind of "files" you're talking about and what your employer's policy is on using cloud storage.
    I found dropbox and/or OneDrive work very well for keeping documents in sync between multiple machines.

  • What is the best way to manage photo's with multiple login accounts?

    There are three people in my household and each has their own login into the computer. I also have and external drive.  Space is becoming short on the computer, so I want to move all my photos and music to the external drive.  I have moved all the music files and folders to the external drive and then each user has just updated their individual iTunes folders, pointing to the external drive.
    However, what is the best way to manage photo's? Do I do this same process or is there another way? I don't want any music or photo files on the computer's hard drive at all if it can be avoided.

  • What is the best way to manage photos - Dropbox (with sync), Facebook (with sync), iPhoto, etc.?

    With so many cloud based and wireless syncing services, I'm lost as to the simplest way to keep photos sync'd as well as backed up. My dropbox is currently syncing all photos I take with my iphone, but in an overall folder called CAMERA UPLOADS, so they are uncategorized. I upload pics to facebook, which facebook also has a sync photos feature, but I don't necessarily want all photos uploaded to facebook. What has worked best for everyone so that there aren't a ton of dupicate photos everywhere, and multiple syncs of the same photos?
    Also, what is the best way to manage my iPhone photos generally? I'm never sure if I delete a photo from my phone, does it delete it on my computer via iCloud? Sometimes I just take a picture to send to a friend that I don't need to keep, while others are ones I want to sync to my computer. Can I control when deleting that it be deleted everywhere or just on the device? And alternately, can I choose certain photos not to sync via iCloud?
    iCloud makes me nervous. Once when I wanted to place all photos of my pup into a folder, I selected the photos on my iPhone and accidentally clicked delete instead of move. No big deal, I figured they'd be at home sync'd on the cloud. But since I'd deleted them on my phone, the cloud deleted them on my home computer too and the photos were lost.

  • Best way to manage multiple users and multiple devices?

    I would like some advice on the best way to manage iTunes and devices synced to it for multiple users -- Here's the scenario: I have 2 grade-school aged kids, who each have an iPod Nano and are going to get my old iPhone 3G to use as an iTouch after I upgrade my phone to the iPhone 4. In addition to my iPhone, I have a MacBook, a 30GB iPod, and a iMac. We are also looking into buying an iPad that we'll want to use (among other things) to watch movies while traveling. All music/apps/movies are currently located in my iTunes account on the iMac, and we sync via my personal @mac.com account.
    I don't want to simply set up separate iTunes accounts for each kid, as I'd like to be able to control what music & apps they buy/download, and I've already got a fair amount of "their" music/apps/movies in my account, and don't want to have to try and move it from my account to theirs. Any advice on how to best set up an iTunes sharing arrangement that allows me to control their accounts, and sync all of the above devices would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  • Best way to manage multiple iTunes accounts (from different countries)

    Ok, wasn't sure if this was the best community to ask this question, but here goes.
    My wife and I have two iTunes accounts, one originally from the United States, the other originally from Australia. Over the years content has been purchased using both accounts.
    We currently reside in Australia and primarily view our content on Apple TV. So far we’ve had no problems logging into either account and accessing all our content.
    Now, I have a fear (perhaps an irrational one) that if we choose to permanently reside in one country (Australia, the US, somewhere else) that at some point Apple may cancel/restrict one of these accounts. Since there is no way for me to merge all our purchased digital content into the one digital library, we’re now wondering the best way to manage this?
    I see there is a new "family sharing" feature soon to be launched, so that may be half the solution (assuming it will work with family members in different continents). If so, the other half of the question is, will we be able to still purchase content on both accounts? While in Australia since April we have rented movies on both accounts, but have only purchased movies etc on the Australian account (we can still do this on the US account, but we haven't risked it in case it gets cancelled because Apple decides we're no longer in the US - in other words, we don't want to spend $$$ on movies we may not be able to access in future).
    What do others think? What is the best way for us to manage our scenario? Or am I worried about nothing and we can continue purchasing content on either account without fear of “losing” it later?
    Any advice would be greatly appreciated! I did try and ring Apple, but the guy refused to give me advice until I provided my details and I did't want to do that at this stage.
    Thanks everyone for your help!
    MM

    You may lose the ability to purchase content from the USA, but any content you've already bought will remain accessible. Back everything up.

  • The best way to manage multiple iPhones

    Hi,
    We currently own three iPhones, my wife’s, my daughter’s and mine and we are all using basically the same apple ID which is good for purchased apps since I have to buy it once and they automatically show on all devices, the issue is with free and personal apps, all of my daughter’s games end up in the other two phones which is annoying.
    What would be the best way to manage all three iPhones butstill be able to share purchased apps without adding unwanted apps?
    Do I need to create three different accounts?
    What would you guys recommend?
    Thanks a lot!

    We have now 5 devices, two adults and 3 kids, including a new work iPhone. To manually select apps from scratch per device/per sync is really tedious.
    Can't one save the "last checked" selections per device, so when Device B is connected the profile pulls up Device B's selections, and I could then evaluate if there are any minimal modifications to be made?
    On the same note, are each device's personal phone items (settings, speed dials, etc) automatically saved separately per device?

  • Best way to manage large library with AAC and MP3 versions of files

    I have a large library of music. I listen to music through iTunes and iPod/iPhones, but also other devices which only support MP3, and not AAC. I typically convert iTunes purchases to MP3, but I'm left with two copies of each song in the same folder. I'm looking for recommendations on the best way to manage what would essentially be a duplicated music library - a high quality version I use with my iTunes/ipods, and a lower quality MP3 version for the devices that only support that format.

    I have had a similar problem. I have all my music residing on a NAS where I access it from iTunes (for managing my iPods/iPhones) and a Tivo PVR (which is connected to my house stereo system.) The problem is that Tivo does not recognize AAC. So I've used iTunes to create mp3 versions of all my purchased AAC music. Because the NAS is set as my iTunes media folder location, iTunes puts the mp3 copies back into the existing folder structure (which it keeps organised) on the NAS. Tivo accesses the NAS directly, over the network. But iTunes also puts the additional copy into the iTunes library which leaves me with multiple copies of the same songs on iTunes AND my iPods. Having multiple copies on the NAS (mp3 for Tivo and AAC for iPod) is OK: I've got plenty of space on the NAS and the Tivo doesn't 'see' the AAC files.
    The solution I'm planning to implement is to delete the mp3 entries from the library as soon as I create them (leaving the files in the media folder.) But what I'm looking is for a way to automatically select the mp3 copies (for deletion) from the existing duplicates list. Any ideas?

  • Best way to achieve multiple paths with quizzes using Captivate 6?

    I’m looking for the best way to achieve multiple paths and quizzes using Captivate 6.
    Here is the scenario: The learner watches general slides 1 – 3 and then chooses between Path A, Path B, or both paths combined.  If they choose Path A then they watch the A portion only and take the A Quiz only. Same happens for Path B and for the two paths combined. The learner would only have to go one path to complete the course.
    What I’m finding is Captivate only has one Quiz results page (even if you create two separate quizzes, it merges them). I was trying to avoid having three separate projects for the same module to keep it simple. I see if I have three separate projects I could use the Multi-SCO Packager to merge them for use on my Moodle LMS. But wait, I don't have the elearning suite, so I don't have access to the Multi-SCO Packager...
    My question is: What is the best approach way to accomplish this goal? Any recommendations?

    Captivate 6 has Branch Aware quizzing.  Turn on that option in Quiz Settings and then your Quiz Results page should only show results for the branch your user visits.

  • Best way to manage multiple Help windows

    Hi all:
    I'm working with X5 to create Help for a large modular
    application. I have a single Help project, but want to deliver help
    content only for the specific modules used by clients. I'm
    attemtping to create multiple Help windows with a Main window
    containing Help for standard deliverables and other windows
    containing Help for specific modules. What's the best way to
    achieve this using a single project. Or do I have to maintain
    multiple projects?
    I tried using customized windows but there are some
    limitations. I manually created a new hhc file for a custom window
    and it's working fine. But, I cannot open the custom window by
    clicking a book in the TOC (which is what I want) of the main
    window but can do so by clicking a topic. Also, I cannot assign
    separate default topics for each custom window. Further, when I
    click a hyperlink in a custom window that links to a topic in the
    main window, the topic from the main window displays in the custom
    window but it's not listed in the TOC of the custom window, so
    that's awkward.
    Please help!!!
    Romeo Coutinho

    From the user's point of view a merged set of help files is
    probably the best solution. Using global windows the whole help
    system is displayed in one window and shows only topics for the
    modules installed (if you can get your setup people to comply with
    your wishes that is ;-) ).
    Handling multiple projects is not more complicated than
    handling a big one. Each help topic only exits in one project; if
    you want to create or update the help for module XYZ_1, you open
    project XYZ_1. If you want to edit a topic in the project Master,
    you open project Master. After editing a project you compile just
    this module and nothing else.
    The only thing you have to learn are the peculiarities of the
    help compiler regarding merged projects. Refer to
    http://www.helpware.net/htmlhelp/how_to_merge.htm
    for a good description of these kinks.

  • Whats the best way to manage/display images ?

    I'm building a yet another photo management application that is designed to be a Picasa2 "lite". I've got a lot of JPGs I need to manage, all of which are loaded asynchronously and cached over the web.
    The same image may appear in multiple places, (i.e. thumbnail, fullsize, original with a zoom box, etc.) I'm having problems keeping all these images in synch when I change the underlying image -- right now I have to create all new JLabels for everything and add them to their respective Panels again. But that doesn't seem like its the best way.
    Here's my JLabel sub-class:
    public class ImageLocatorSubscriber extends JLabel {
         public final ImageDimEnum maxDimEnum;
         final ImageIcon imgIcon = new ImageIcon();
         BufferedImage bi;
         ImageLocator il;
         public ImageLocatorSubscriber(ImageLocator il, ImageDimEnum d) {
              super();
              this.maxDimEnum = d;
              this.imgIcon = new ImageIcon();
              if (il != null) {
                   this.il = il;
                            this.bi = il.getBi(RunMode.NOWAIT);
                      if (bi.getWidth()!=maxDimEnum.dim.getWidth() || bi.getHeight()!=maxDimEnum.dim.getHeight()) {
                           bi = FotoFix.resize(bi, maxDimEnum.dim);
                      this.bi = bi;
                      this.imgIcon.setImage(this.bi);
                      this.setSize(bi.getWidth(), bi.getHeight());
              this.setIcon(this.imgIcon);
              this.setBorder(Constants.borderGray);
         }Is the preferred method for changing the image displayed in a JLabel
    a) create a new ImageIcon and use (JLabel) this.setIcon()
    b) reuse the existing ImageIcon and use (JLabel) this.imgIcon.setImage();
    c) remove the old JLabel from the panel, create a new JLabel, and add that to the panel?
    I can only get c) to work. When I try to use b) some of the images are not updated properly, even as I have declared this.imgIcon as final. Any ideas, or should I just leave it be?

    override this method in any JComponent subclass

  • Best way to manage a "project?

    I'm working on a small'ish project that will take about 3 different "circuits" and put them onto one board.
    I'm not designing it into a large master circuit, at least not at the moment, so I want to design each circuit, and link them to a master file of sorts that will also be linked to the PCB file.
    One circuit performs amplification, the other will allow addition of extra devices, and yet another will be the power supply.
    whats the best or most effecient way to have all these linked such that I can run a simulation on them by using the designed power supply WITHOUT putting the power supply in each circuit?
    Basically what I'm asking here is should I be using subcircuits, or should I make this into a "project"
    I really don't know how to use multisim beyond making a circuit and importing it to ultiboard.

    Hi,
    My suggestion would be to use subcircuits as you want everything to be on the same PCB. This will allow you to have all the sections of the circuit seperated while it all being on the same design and thus being able to transfer to the same PCB.
    Hope this helps.
