So you did buy Aperture from the AppStore?
Then move the Aperture application to the Trash, but do not empty it, just in case
Sign into the AppStore and reinstall. In this case you do not need to revert to an earlier version. If the AppStore installer does not find an Aperture in your Applications folder, it will have to make a full install, and no incompatible frameworks should remain, as is the problem with the partial upgrades right now.

And have you checked, if you really can boot from your clone? Just being very cautious.

There has been many attempts at trying to "trojan" or trick Mac users into installing rogue software on web pages. If you see soemthing like this, best to just Force Quit the browser by clicking on the Finder and selecting Force Quit from the menu.
A alternative browser like Firefox will offer more protection.
If you run your typical day to day operations on a Mac in what's called "Standard User", with a separate Admin User account, you'll need to update your Apple Menu > Software Update and your Apple Menu > System Preferences > Security > toggle the "Automatically Update Safe Downloads List" check box on/off about once a week.
Standard User provides more security restrictions, but is also designed not to intrude into those who are less capable use of the computer.
Third party plugins for your browser like Flash and Silverlight (used on Netflix) require a once a week check for updates.

I found 2 articles on how to take an HDV timeline and export it for DVD SP for a SD DVD.

OK. So to report back:
Having set the sequence to render as ProRes and then exporting via Compressor looks as bad as exporting a straight HDV sequence via Compressor.
So I reset the Render setting to "Same as sequence" and exported a small part using the procedure outlined in my first post, exporting using quicktime conversion. That looked great.
Exporting using Quicktime conversion or straight quicktime takes the same amount of time on my system (intel iMac), so I opted to go with Ken Stone's recommendation and use Quicktime Conversion, since that's the more recent recommendation.(The other link did recommend outputing a QT file, but it was a year older. Maybe the author(s) learned something in the interim?)
So now I am in the middle of a 20 hour export to a QT file. I'll report back in about 13 hours...

I have just bought a solar charger made by Powerbee for my iPod. It offers three voltage choices:- 5 volt, 5.5 volt and 9.5 volt. I thing the ipod is 5 volt but could someone confirm this please, I can't find it in the tech specs.

iPod requires only 5 volts to charge.
Do not try using the higher voltages as this may damage (probably will damage) your iPod.

I'm a creative cloud subscriber and am about to perform an upgrade from Win 7 to Win 8. Has this scenario been tested? Should I deactivate and/or uninstall my Adobe products before the upgrade, and then reinstall after? Will this be considered a 'new' computer, and cost me another install?

I am getting ready to upgrade to Tiger from Panther. I have used the disk utility to repair permissions after an upgrade or hardware addition. I have always done it using the disk utility and not from a boot up on the OS install dvd.
Is there a difference? I notice that if I do a repair permissions 2 or 3 times in a row that some of the same permissions are repaired again and again.

I assume you are referring to the log entries which contain "We are using special permissions..."
If so, you can safely ignore those messages. They are purely informational. This is not indicative of a permissions problem.
There is also no need to repair permissions while booted from the system DVD. Running it the way you are is fine, and you should only need to do it when you have a problem with your machine resulting from improperly set permissions.

Apple does not publish charging times with various sources, but usually a few hours, like 4-6 hours. If you charge it overnight you won't notice how long it takes.
