What is the Smart Playlist

I read about the Smart Playlist all the time..what exactly is that? Also
what is the on the go playlist? I just have my playlists that I made.
Sorry it's such a silly question..but I'm still learning.
Thanks for any responses!

A smart playlist is one that you construct using rules, rather than adding songs to the list manually. From iTunes, create a new smart playlist (File menu, as I recall), and fill in some rules. For example:
Genre is Rock AND
last_played is not in past 1 month
There are pull-down lists for most of the options; it isn't hard to figure out.
This is a very powerful tool for organizing your collection, without spending much effort on playlist construction.
Be aware that there's a bug on the iPhone and Touch, where the 'select by' rule gets things backwards (e.g. most recent <-> least recent). If you avoid that option on the smart playlist setup, you should be fine. There are also reports of problems with 'live update' on these playlists, but they don't seem to affect everyone.

  • I copied a smart playlist to a regular playlist in order to change the order of the individual selections.  I then burned the regular playlist to a cd, but the cd burned it in alphabetical order as it appears on the smart playlist.

I changed the order, then burned a cd but the cd copied the songs in the order of the smart playlist, which was alphabetical.  What am i doing wrong in this scenario, and is there a way to change the song order in a smart playlist?  I am a new MAC user.  Is this unique to the MAC format?

I'm trying to figure out a way to make a playlist of songs I generally like from a very large library to fit on my iPod. The songs aren't rated, and I don't want to have a totally random selection chosen by a smart playlist.
    I usually make two playlists.
One playlist with favorites I do want on the iPod and another smart playlist to fill the rest of the iPod. Just limit the size to th esize of the iPod minus wthe size of my iPod selection playlist.

  • ITunes 9: What is the "Recent" playlist?

I have a "Recent" playlist. Mine is empty. What is "Recent" for?
    Thanks

If it is a smart playlist (indicated by the icon having a little graphic of a gear in it, as opposed to a little quarter note graphic), you can right click on it and then select "Edit Smart Playlist" and see the rules it applies. For it to update automatically, you must have "Live updating" checked.
On my machine I have a "Recently Played" which is songs that have been played (all the way to the end of the song) in the last two weeks. I have another that is "Recently Added" which is songs added within the last two weeks. I don't have a "Recent" playlist, so I can't comment on what yours does. But hopefully by looking at the smart playlist settings above, you can figure it out.

  • What's a 'Smart Playlist'?

What's a smart playlist and what's the difference between a "Smart Playlist" and a playlist? I do not understand the whole "Smart Playlist" thing.
    Please someone explain it.
Thanks, I am kind of simple with playlists because I've been using Windows Media Player for 6 years and iTunes for 3 or 4 months.

Just a simple playlist has no criteria set up for content, you simply drag & drop whatever songs you wish to the empty playlist in the source pane. A smart play list can be made by setting up specific criteria to choose what music would go into the playlist. To use one of my SPL's for example, it's a modification from the "my top rated playist", I call it my "lost favorites" list. The criteria I have set up for it are: "My rating is greater than 3 stars", I have limited the number of songs to 100, the selected by "least often played". You can set up SPL's by about any criteria you can think of. I have some that are simply set up by artist, then least often played or most often played. It just depends on what you want to do.

I can CREATE the list but, the songs that I have played don't accumulate in the list.
I haven't changed the steps that worked for me previous to the upgrade.
I have no idea how to fix this and can't find mention of anyone else having a similar problem.
    Any suggestions?

Click on a station and drag to the left. The playlists sidebar will open up. Drop on the playlist you want to add to.

  • What would the Smart Collection criteria be to isolate files in a folder but NOT in a collection?

What would the Smart Collection criteria be to isolate files in a folder but NOT in a collection?

    or else FAR more simply,
though in practice, the difficulty may lie with how fuzzily or precisely the search text used, applies.
    QUESTION
I'd be very curious to know, does anyone know how to search on a section of a full folder path rather than on the individual parts of that?
    My folders are structured by LR at import, as (e.g.) 2014 / 01 / 27 for 27th Jan 2014.
So if I wanted to use a Smart Collection to search for (among other things) images in July 2013, I can search multiply on includes all of "2013" and "07" but that also throws up in my case, images which were taken on the 7th day of other months during 2013. I could search on a date range, though that's a little more laborious, or else do what I otherwise prefer, which is by keywords and other attributes plus (possibly) just year.
If I could search on folder path includes the string "2013/07" this would work fine. But I haven't found a syntax that does that (yet, assuming it is possible at all).

  • What does the 'SMART' flag signify for a network interface?

When I run ifconfig on my Mac OSX (Yosemite) my Wi-Fi interface (for example) has these flags:
    en1: flags=8863<UP,BROADCAST,SMART,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
What does the 'SMART' flag refer to? I haven't been able to find this in any man pages.

If you want information at that level of detail, you have to look at the source code for ifconfig:
    http://opensource.apple.com/source/network_cmds/network_cmds-457/ifconfig.tproj/ ifconfig.c
which in turn refers to if.h:
    http://www.opensource.apple.com/source/xnu/xnu-792.13.8/bsd/net/if.h
which shows that it refers to the "IFF_NOTRAILERS" bit. The comment reads, "obsolete: avoid use of trailers."

  • Can you increase the smart playlist directly on an ipod

Can you increase the song number above 25 on an iPod touch when you create a smart playlist directly on the ipod

Have you followed the notes I gave you two days ago? Although your question then did not refer to changing the Playlist directly "on the iPod", I did let you know what you have to do.
I suggest that if you are still having issues, you stick to one thread, preferably the other one since it has the necessary instructions, and let us know what your problem is.

  • Why on the Smart Playlist options more limited on Mac's iTunes vs. Windows iTunes? kind of Ironic?

I have been using iTunes since the iPod mini was introduced!  Over the years I have been a huge fan of making smart playlists! However the funny thing is... is that up until this year I have owned a PC and now that I own a MAC it is ironic that its version of iTunes LIMITS the options you have to make Smart playlist. The option that says "Match the [then you choose] following [or] all rules:"  is only given at the top of the list of parameters.  Where os on the PC version you can assign a parameter at the beginning starting with "Match all rules:"  followed by something like "Rating... 5 stars" then you can choose "Match the following rules:"  follows by a series of parameters; such as list various artists.  This allows you to customize a playlist of your favorite song by some of you favorite artists.  This is just one example... The "Match the 'following' vs. 'all' rules" (at any point in the sequense of rules, not just at the beginning) has really added to the dynamics (a new dimesion, if you will) of how I listen to music over the years.  It is kind of wierd that such an option does not appear available in iTunes on Mac computers.

It's still there on the Mac. As with many things on the Mac they kind of hid this feature. When making your smart playlist pressing the Alt/Option key on the keyboard will switch the "+" button to a "..." button to add another "Match" rule.

  • How do I add a folder to the library into the smart playlist called "recently added"?

Hello Apple users! I really miss the old version of I-tunes that allowed you to manually add files and folders from your hard drive directly into individually created I-tunes playlists with nothing more than copy and paste. I don't mind that the new version requires some additional steps, like having to go through "add file/folder to library" onto a temporary "recently added" sub-master list, from which I could then transfer them to the sub-folder playlist categories afterwards...except that I can't! The I-Tunes Playlist window does not have a "recently added" category already there, so I have to manually create one ("new smart playlist"), and then create a set of "rules" to then have a writeable clean slate onto which each new "add file to library" could go...This works only for the first folder I add, but then after I copy them to their sub-folder destinations, I can't delete them to make room for the next batch, nor does the next batch even go in...I've then tried deleting the current "recently added" smart list and creating another, (with a new set of rules) , and then tried adding the next group using "add files to library", only to have the original batch come back up again and the new batch not...Apparently, I can add all the files and folders I want, but they only go to one place, which is the main master list under "library" and they all get mixed in together and are virtually impossible to find!
I have about 20 playlist folders on my C drive under "My Music"...How do I get them onto I-tunes anywhere except scrambled in random order?

I have about 20 playlist folders on my C drive under "My Music"...How do I get them onto I-tunes anywhere except scrambled in random order?
    Boca Babe,
Just add them to your iTunes library, and then sort as you wish.
Don't try to add things directly to Recently Added.  Recently Added will pick songs up automatically, e.g., all songs whose "Date Added" is in the last X weeks.
If you would like to add files or folders of songs directly to a playlist, create a regular playlist, not a smart playlist.  Then open it and drag the files/folders into it.  They will be added immediately to that playlist, and to your library if they are not already in it.

  • Was the Smart Playlist podcast order bug on iPod nano fixed in iTunes 11

iTunes 9 broke the order in which Smart Playlists play podcasts in on the Nano.  See "Smart Playlist order not respected on ipod nano after upgrade to iTunes 9" (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2154509).  Has this been fixed in iTunes 11?

    Hi MNM1974,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you want to know how to manually manage the music and playlists on your iPod nano. The article below provides more information about automatic and manual syncing of content to your device, and it will walk you through the process.

  • Has anyone found a solution to the smart playlist problem.

    Hello,
After many calls to Apple regarding my smart playlists not syncing correctly I figured I'd try the forums. Since iTunes 9 (back in November) my playlists have not been syncing correctly, at all and it's not just a case of the songs being out of order, the entire playlist/s is incorrect, with songs I didn't even add to the list.
I only have 16gb to play with on my phone, my entire library is over 40gb, so I depend on smart playlists so that only selected songs (4 star rated or better) make it to my iPhone.
Other then unchecking live update, is there any other solutions that actually work? I'm way beyond frustrated with this issue and the fact that they STILL haven't fixed it.
    iTunes 9.0.3
    iPhone 3.1.3
Both were just updated this week, the iPhone this afternoon.
    Thank you for any help!
    Regards,
    Eric

Don't know if my problem is same as yours..after Lion install, frozen cursor in password field when logging in after starting up, beach ball. Couple of trips to Apple store, a number of phone calls to troubleshoot with Applecare. The last fellow who helped me found a workaround, just can't log in. He said engineers have reports of others with this problem so it's not just my machine but fix would probably come in software update. Been dealing with this since first week of Lion download. Hopefully they'll fix it eventually. I can use macbook now, but don't like not being able to have a screen login via password. No plans to ever again download a new op system on a mac...had no trouble installing win7 on older dell from vista.

  • What is the "Smart Encoding Adjustments" option?

While choosing my importing settings, I couldn't help but notice the option "Smart Encoding Adjustments" at the bottom of the MP3 Encoder settings (just above the High-Pass Filter option and buttons).
I searched the discussions, I searched Google, and even the iTunes Help that comes with the software - all to no avail.
Does anyone know exactly what this entails? Maybe it's common sense to someone who knows the ins and outs of how exactly VBR MP3 encoding works, but I just don't know what to assume. I do make the assumption that most people consider it irrelevant, but why would the programmers give it to us as an option? I suppose I could experiment and encode two identical files with Smart Encoding Adjustments being the dependent variable, but I don't know exactly what evidence to look for. File size? Quality?
Whatever. I'm just looking for help and would sincerely appreciate any response that would aid me in my understanding.

Yes, Thanks! It's still quite vague, but I suppose if I'm looking for something extremely technical, I should just learn it on my own and go with other software options.
This is what I got from the article:
"If you choose to customize the MP3 encoding configuration, you can enable the Smart Encoding Adjustments option to allow iTunes to automatically adjust some of the internal parameters to improve the sound quality of converted files based on the original bit rate selection. This can include reducing the number of channels, encoded frequencies, or the sample rates."
I don't quite know how it could improve the sound quality by reducing any of those three variables, but then again, I suppose it all doesn't matter when not working with professional equipment and software.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

  • The smart playlists do not come on my ipod name, as I can fix it?

Hello, when I create a smart playlist file and synchronize with my ipod, on ipod not go with the name that I put on itunes.
could someone give me the solution?

    Sounds like
iOS: Wi-Fi or Bluetooth settings grayed out or dim
One user reported that placing the iPod in the freezer fixed the problem. A trick that works frequently with iPhones:
Settings > AirPlane Mode ON, Do Not Disturb ON
Power down and wait 5-10 minutes
    Power up
Settings > AirPlane Mode OFF, Do Not Disturb OFF
If not successful, an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is usually in order.
