What is the the overhead of a thread dump operation

If I perform a thread dump every two minutes on the weblogic appserver
is it going to have a severe impact on the performance.
Please help.

    Thanks alot for your reply. It is a web application
    using java and tomcat server. And the problem is that
    sometime when I click on a button or a link than the
    CPU goes to 100% and it hangs but normally it works
    smoothly without any problem.This often indicates a busy retry loop somewhere. You need to acquire the thread dump when the problem occurs, but be warned that depending on the problem it may not be possible to obtain a Java-level thread dump. In that case you need to try and take an OS level thread dump - eg using pstack on solaris/linux (and there's some win32 tool as well if I recall correctly).

  • What is the different DEALLOCATE UNUSED - datafile resize operation ?

    hi everybody,
    i have a question about DEALLOCATE UNUSED.
    what is the different DEALLOCATE UNUSED command and datafile resize operation ?
    Thanks.

    Deallocate unused space clause is used to to explicitly deallocate unused space at "the end" of a segment and makes that space available for other segments within the tablespace. Internally, Oracle deallocates unused space beginning from the end of the objects (allocated space) and moving downwards toward the beginning of the object, continuing down until it reaches the high water mark (HWM).
    Datafile resize add/substracts physical operating system bytes from the datafile .
    Cheers :)

  • What is the overhead of Supplemental Logging?

    We would like to copy data from a 600 GB Oracle database (9i) to a separate database for reporting. We want to use Data Guard in Logical Standby mode. The source database is heavily used and we can't afford a significant increase in system load (e.g. I/O activity) on that system.
    To set up a Logical Standby, we need to put the JD Edwards database into Supplemental Logging mode. I am concerned that this will noticibly increase the load on the source server.
    Has anyone analyzed the additional overhead of Supplemental Logging?
    I have done some testing using Oracle 10.2 (Oracle XE on my computer) which indicates that when I turn on Supplemental Logging, the size of the archive logs grows by 40%. I have not yet tested this on our 9i database.
    Thank you in advance for your help!
    Best Regards,
    Mike
    =================================
    The code below demonstrates the symptoms mentioned above:
    RESULTS - size of archive logs generated:
    - With Supplemental Logging: 120 MB
    - Without: 80 MB
    =================================
    CREATE TABLE "EMP"
    (     "EMPLOYEE_ID" NUMBER(6,0),
         "FIRST_NAME" VARCHAR2(20),
         "LAST_NAME" VARCHAR2(25) NOT NULL ENABLE,
         "EMAIL" VARCHAR2(25) NOT NULL ENABLE,
         "PHONE_NUMBER" VARCHAR2(20),
         "HIRE_DATE" DATE NOT NULL ENABLE,
         "JOB_ID" VARCHAR2(10) NOT NULL ENABLE,
         "SALARY" NUMBER(8,2),
         "COMMISSION_PCT" NUMBER(2,2),
         "MANAGER_ID" NUMBER(6,0),
         "DEPARTMENT_ID" NUMBER(4,0)
    alter table emp add CONSTRAINT "EMP_EMP_ID_PK" PRIMARY KEY ("EMPLOYEE_ID")
    CREATE TABLE "STAT"
    (     "F1" NUMBER,
         "ID" VARCHAR2(10)
    The "employee" table is from Oracle XE samples
    The procedure below generates transactions to test archive log size.
    To run, put the database in archive log mode. Then pop an archive log by executing
    ALTER SYSTEM ARCHIVE LOG CURRENT;
    To flip between running with Supplemental Logging, use one of:
    ALTER DATABASE drop SUPPLEMENTAL LOG DATA (PRIMARY KEY, UNIQUE INDEX) COLUMNS;
    ALTER DATABASE ADD SUPPLEMENTAL LOG DATA (PRIMARY KEY, UNIQUE INDEX) COLUMNS;
    declare
    i number;
    begin
    i := 0;
    while i < 1000
    loop
    delete from emp;
    insert into emp select * from employees;
    update emp set COMMISSION_PCT = COMMISSION_PCT * .5;
    update stat set f1 = i where id = 'UPD';
    commit;
    if i mod 1000 = 0 then
    dbms_output.put_line(i);
    end if;
    i := i + 1;
    end loop;
    end;
    /***********************************************/

    Unless the bottleneck of your system is related in any way to the redo log files, I don't see any risk in generating supplemental logging. A good way to find out is to look at a Statspack report, and see which events are the top 5 time-wise.

  • What is the best cross server thread package that can be used with JSF?

    Hi all,
    I need to basically, do some clean up after timeout. I don't mean a session timeout. I just want to start from thread/process that does something every 30 seconds. Later, I would want to stop this thread.
    I don't know much about J2ee, but there must be some why to do this kind of thing. Please, give me some sort of information about it.
    Thanks,
    Grae

    I don't if you guys have seen ITG Edge for iPhone 6 from Indiegogo, but I think they seem pretty legit in terms of covering the entire screen without making any change to the original design. I've seen the videos from their campaign.
    I think there's still room for the promotion of $30 for pre-order right now.

  • What is the Default WorkManager Max-Threads-Constraint default value?

    Hello,
    I know that when I create a new WorkManager the default value for the Max-Threads-Constraint is -1.
    But I wonder if this is the case also for the default value of the Default Work Manager?
    I would assume that the Default WorkManager has other values set. Couldn't find any reference to that.
    Thank you in advance.

    It is called as Self-Tuning Work Manager.
    It means, it doesnt have a specific value. It varies according to the demand in a specific time.

  • KEA0 what is the best way to create new Operating concern

    Hello :
    Please advise
    1. what is best way to create new OP concern
        copy from template or create data structure from scratch?
    2. I try to copy from OP concern = IDEA but when click change DATA STRUTURE -I see only CE1xxx but I not see CE2xxxx, CE3xxxx, CE4xxxx ...
       pls advise - how to? can I change data structure on CE2, CE3....
    Thx in advance.

    If your data structure will be the same then do a copy. if the data structures are different then create from scratch ( or modify after copy).  Copy saves time so you don't have to start from scratch.

  • What's the maximum # of threads?

    Support for asynchronous I/O (in HTTPService and WebService)
    kinda implies that the Player has a thread pool that it gets a
    spare thread from each time I do a send() on one of these
    components. Each allocated thread will block until it gets a
    response. If I don't get any responses (perhaps because it's
    long-lived) how many threads can I obtain from the pool before the
    Player runs out of threads (or is there no maximum or is it a
    start-up parameter)?

    Hi,
    I'm working on a pretty big program and i need a lot of threads to make it run well (it's an audio player and, of course, i don't need people to wait when, for example, they save a playlist). So, i put some of these tasks on different threads, plus others that i didn't need for making the program run faster, but they are there just to make the program run. Now i have at least 4 threads running at the same time and, in some cases, there are even 6 or 7. Is it too much? It's my first big program (it's just for fun but i still want it to run well) and i didn't need so many threads before. What's the maximum number of threads you'd recommend me to have?
    Thanks.Are you experiencing any problems with the number of Threads you have? If not, stop worrying. On the other hand, are you sure you need all of them? There are alternatives to Threading, such as SwingWorker and Timer that might be able to help you out.
    One thing you better make sure of is that you're not doing any Swing work off of the EDT, or doing things like sleeping or time-consuming work on the EDT.

  • What is the diff'ce while creating a thread

    what is the difference while creating thread using extends Thread, and implements Runnable interface. which one is perform better.

    and for when to use which again depends upon if the
    e class that you wish to make threaded already
    extends from some other class. If so is the case the
    only alternative you are left with is to implement it
    from Runnable interface. ( as java does not supports
    multiple inheritance ).That's a bad advice. You should only extend thread if you actually want to change the behaviour, or extend the functionallity of the thread class. You should not extend the thread class just because it's convinient.

    Hi,
    What's the right number of thread for a server that has 2 CPU? I know the default setting for Dev is 15 and Production is 25. From what I read in the Performance Tuning Guide, it should be somewhere around the number of CPUs on the machine? Is that right? Or keep the default?

  • Generate thread dump without sending ctrl-break on Win32

    I have a server application running as a service on Win2k (we use Service+ to do this). The output of the console is piped to a text file which we can monitor. But, I can't figure out how to generate a thread dump while running in this configuration. Does anyone know if Service+ can be configured to do this, or if it can be achieved programmatically (how does Sun spit out the thread info when it gets the request).
    Thanks,
    Larry

    If you are running a java application on a Windows server. You can press Ctrl-Break, and a thread dump will be displayed in the console. This thread dump is a list of all the threads running in the JVM, and the line of code they are each executing.
    We'd like to be able to generate this thread dump some other way than pressing Ctrl-Break, because we don't have a console, our application is running as a service using Service .
