What takes up 'other' memory??

on the ipod's memory usage bar on itunes, it has 'audio' and 'other'
i have a lot of 'other' memory being taken up
what kind of files would be taking up this space?
how do i delete it?
all i have on my ipod is songs, so that would be the 'audio' memory?
i really need to get rid of the 'other' memory being used up!!

Other can be the file system, contacts etc. If a lot of space is being taken up try restoring your iPod, this will erase the hard drive, reload the software and put it back to default settings. Once the restore is complete follow the on screen instructions and it should connect to iTunes and give you a prompt to automatically update your library onto the fresh installation: Restoring iPod to Factory Settings with iTunes 7

  • What takes up 'other' memory usage

Im not sure if anyone else has this issue, but while syncing my iPod, the 'Other' usage rose almost half a gb in an instant. what takes up sp much memory, and how do I sotp it?

iTunes also uses the "Other" section as a temporary file, that's why it can change the size while you are syncing, for example if you add updated versions of apps, the data is stored there until the new app has been transferred.
A file size up to 1GB of "other" is normal, if it is getting bigger, there might be corrupt data inside resulting from a sync that went wrong. You can reduce the size again to normal by restoring the device.

  • How to analyses what takes memory

    Hi,
I have a library with several functions written in labview and compiled into shared dll. Library provides functions to be used in test cases for Production (init, write, read, change, deint, etc). In init function some files are created, connections are established, and some functional globals are created to pass some data between functions.
This library is used at the end in TestStand. I test it first in CVI.
When I start prepared in CVI interface, it takes at start about 55MB. When I hit init for the first time it increases ~10MB. Deinit frees only some kB. Another init adds ~1 - 2MB, and every another init adds ~1-2MB. It seems like some memory is not released. That is not a problem at a test phase, but Production does not do restarts, they just run it on and on, and suddenly they might face a lack of memory.
There are several global variables passed via shift registers, but there should be always the same part of memory used. I read into internal structure xml file that is of size about 400kB, but even if it is read at every init it should be overwritten.
However how to deallocate place for such global.
I was trying to use DesktopExecutionTraceTolkit, but I am unable to analyze 400k lines.
Is there any other way to analyze what takes the memory, and what keeps it after vi ends?

    Hi Piotr,
    thank you for hints.
I used function "request deallocation" before, but it gave not any better results.
Filtering result from Desktop Execution Trace Tolkit gave me still klines to be analysed. It is impossible.
I have never used In Place Element structure, but I can check if it can bring some positive results.
    As a clarification:
INIT function reads some files (and close them after reading) and stores some of this info in functional globals (in registers) - ini file, xml file, log file. It also establish a connections to targets. This refnums are the only ones that are not closed until DEINIT funciton is used. Deinit function mailny closes the connections. I made a mistake in my first post. DEINIT function does not free any memory, it just takes only some kB.
    I made some tests.
I removed reading of xml file. The consumption of memory decreased a lot as expected. But still memory was allocated and not freed in every start.
I removed then almost all functional globals (but one responsible for holding of refnums to targets), but still some kB was taken and not released.
I dont really understand whay the memory that should be self deallocated, is not. I write to some registers, and when i write again, it seems like some other components are created in memory but I still talk to the same register.
Or maybe there is a problem in CVI environment? It could not be, that the momory is not released when vi finishes execution.

For information about the Other category in the Storage display, see this support article. If the Storage display seems to be inaccurate, try rebuilding the Spotlight index.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
              iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then restart the computer. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation—not the mythical 10%, 15%, or any other percentage. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as  Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Ask for instructions in that case.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Note that ODS only works with OS X 10.8 or later. If you're running an older OS version, use GP.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install the app you downloaded in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
    sudo /Applications/GrandPerspective.app/Contents/MacOS/GrandPerspective
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator. Ignore any other messages that appear in the Terminal window.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.

I cannot for the life of me figure this out.

What you need to do is connect your phone to iTunes but do not click sync.  Go to File at the top and click transfer purchases from phone, that'll put all your apps into iTunes.  When it's done transferring, locate your phone on the sidebar and click it.  Then find the apps option above the picture of your iphone, you can select which apps you want or don't want on your phone.  After selecting your apps then you can sync.  Once you do this you should never have your problem anymore.

With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5/6/7, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

When I connect my iPod3 to my Imac, the memory shows 13GB or so assigned to "other" (color coded yellow). What is this "other", and can I clear it?

The "Other" section on your iPod consists of several different things including album artwork, files you may or could be storing on it externally when using the iPod as a storage disk, the iPod's software/OS, as well as corrupt files that are leftover from failed sync operations with iTunes or are no longer recognized by the iPod's software or iTunes. The size of other is usually quite minute, around less than a GB, sometimes a little more (depending on the amount of media stored on your iPod).
In order to clear this space out, you'll need to restore your iPod to factory settings in iTunes.

  • How do move what is on my startup memory over to the other memory modules?

I installed extra memory into my Mac.  I have used up all of the start up memory (per the notice that comes up every time memory is tried to be accessed). How do move what is on my startup memory over to the other memory modules?

Activity Monitor's window shows the RAM being used; it does not show how much of your hard drive is being used. Here is how you find out how much of your hard drive is being used:
control click on your hard drive icon and you will get a Get Info window like this:
On my MBP, the hard drive is 239 GB of which 59 GB are used and 179 GB are available.
Please post your hard drive get info screenshot.

  • What exactly is "other" and why does it take -up so much space?

I'm trying to free up some space on my iPad2, and see "other" is usiong 6.7 gigs..  What exactly is "other"?

Actually "other" is app data, Safari Bookmarks, calendar entries, text messages, notes, Safari History, email messages and things like that - stuff associated with apps - but not the apps themselves or any other media.
Your "other" should be nowhere near 6.7 GB. You had a corrupt sync. You can try restarting, the iPad, rebooting it by holding down on the home and sleep buttons at the same time until the Apple logo appears or unsync all photos and music and then resync all photos and music.
However, many times you need to restore the device to factory settings and then restore from a backup in order to reduce that bloated size. That should probably be no more than 1 GB and more likely between 200 and 750 MB in total size.

  • How do I delete the "other" memory from my Iphone 4?

Most of the memory on my phone is taken by music, but the "other" memory is getting annoying. It takes up 1.34GB and i want to delete it. can anyone help me?

Same issue with my iPhone 4. I deleted everything (apps.songs, pics, video) anything you can think of..... I call apple and they recommended a restore so I did and what happen?....  I still see those "other" spaces taking a big chunk of memory. So I made an appointment with the Genius Bar & most likely they will replace my phone ....   Blah !!

  • What is the available memory for user in iPad

In iPad 3rd generation wifi model, what is the available memory for users?
    Capacity          Available Memory
    16 GB                      ?
    32 GB                      ?

iOS should take about the same amount of storage on both, the difference is partly due to how a 'gigabyte' is defined e.g. on packaging it's 1 billion bytes, but on the device itself it uses the binary definition (2 to the power 30), and some storage may also be 'lost' by formatting : http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2419

  • What is using the memory? help please.

i just noticed that in the bottom of my finder it says i only have 7.42 gb available. i do have a lot of photos and music on my computer, but i have taken off things like garage band, which i never use.
i feel like 7.42 is very little, and i am wondering if there is a way to see what is using the memory (and how much each application is using). i just have an ibook g4 and i didn't get anything added to it when i bought it, i am just worried i have a bug eating my memory.
    any suggestions?

    Hi annamaria,
WhatSize will show you the size of every file/folder on your computer. Photos can take up a lot of space especially if you have the individual files and have imported them into iPhoto. In that case you have two of each.
It's doubtful there's any bug taking the hard drive space. Over time we just accumulate more and more and slowly run out of space.
