[SOLVED] Hibernate Windows or boot Archlinux, can't do both.

Hi,
I couldn't hibernate Windows, when I tried to the computer locks up. But I fixed it executing "diskmgmt.msc" and marking the C: partition as active. Now I can hibernate, but when I power on the computer I can't see syslinux boot screen. What can I do?
When I install Windows, I did the trick to not install the hidden 100mb partition.

First, were you able to hibernate Arch before?
In any case, now you're in Linux territory. Post output of the command and anything relevant from your systemd journal.
I don't really remember. Here is the journal:

This is important as if it will it means i can make the windows partition a lot smaller and keep all my files on the OS X partition which would be preferable.

No, OSX will be read only (from Windows) and vice versa. (you can install 3rd party utilities on either or both partitions, to make read/write possible)

If I buy a mac mini with a fusion drive and add windows using boot camp, can I make the SSD function be dedicated to the windows partition?

Additional information from Linc's post. Basically, only one additional partition can be added to a Fusion Drive and it resides on the HDD.
Do computers that come with a Fusion Drive support Boot Camp?
Yes. Use the Boot Camp Assistant to create a Windows partition and install Boot Camp. The Windows partition will exist on the hard disk drive, not the Flash drive, and is not part of Fusion Drive Logical Volume Group. 3TB Fusion Drive configurations need to update to OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.3 or later to install Windows 8. See iMac (27-inch, Late 2012): Boot Camp alert with 3T hard drive for more information.

  • [SOLVED] UEFI Windows 7 And ArchLinux

    Hey guys
I had installed Windows 7 beside Arch Linux as legacy mode and everything was okay.
But now I decide to install them as UEFI mode.
When I converted my HDD to GPT, Windows created a 128MiB FAT32 Partition for itself.
Am I supposed to create any other partition for EFI boot?
    Thanks

    re: ESP
Known wrote:And one more question: Is it better to extend it to 512MiB?
In theory, a smallish ESP is sufficient unless you're storing big files on it (say, several Linux kernels and initrds). In practice, some people have reported problems with FAT32 ESPs smaller than 512MiB. It seems that some EFIs have buggy or finicky FAT drivers that can fail to see files or otherwise misbehave on FAT32 partitions smaller than 512MiB. If you run into that problem, you'll have to either expand the ESP or convert it to FAT16. Note, however, that the EFI spec is explicit in saying that the ESP should be FAT32, not FAT16, and the Windows installer tends to flake out if it sees a FAT16 ESP. Thus, an ESP of 512MiB or larger (I recommend more like 550MiB because of issues of the default FAT size in mkdosfs and the potential for MiB vs. MB confusions) is best if you're starting from scratch. A smaller ESP does work for many people, though.

  • Windows 8 and ArchLinux dual-boot - Failed to open file: arch\boot\...

    Hey!
I have a problem where I don't know how to configure the EFISTUB to boot ArchLinux along Windows 8. I have read the instructions on the wiki and tried for two days and the only thing I've come up with is copying some files into the /boot/efi/EFI/arch/ folder, and adding the entry into the UEFI boot menu. I can select it when Restarting Windows8 through the shift-restart thing and stuff but when it attempts to boot it says:
    Failed to open file: arch\boot\archiso.img
I don't know how to set this up and fix it. I am so confused with everything right now due to the instructions on the wiki basically being "You can either do it this way, that way or any other way." but does not specifically expain how each works (at least so that I understand it fully) and what has to be done to complete these steps. Like, I need a complete tutorial from Start to Finish, to do this because I'm too nervous messing up my partitions. I have understood some parts thought and what I want is to be able to boot it from the EFISTUB instead of chain-booting like I usually do. I just don't know how to connect the entry in the list to the proper files to boot the system.
    What I have done:
    Installed the base system.
Istalled grub in the base system but has not used grub to install on the /boot yet because I don't know if it is to be used if I'm supposed to use the EFISTUB (I was thinking efibootmgr would be enough)
Tried to use efibootmgr to make the entry, but the entry does not work. (If this is how I should do it, can you explain which partition to target and what the different values would mean when answering?)
I don't know which one is right, or if both shall be done (I guess Grub is used if I want to chain-load. I guess I can do it if it's the only way)
Anyway, I hope you guys can answer me so I can fix this. Thanks

What you're trying to do now is:
    EFI->kernel (EFI stub)
This is appealingly direct, but it's tricky to get working. What the wiki now recommends is:
    EFI->gummiboot->kernel (EFI stub)
    ...or...
    EFI->GRUB->kernel
These approaches are less direct, but they're easier to configure. The trouble is that both the EFI's built-in boot manager and the EFI stub loader are tricky to configure. For a newbie to get them both configured correctly on a first attempt at installing Arch is very difficult. Getting the EFI to launch gummiboot or GRUB is easier because these programs don't require the complex parameters that the EFI stub loader requires. Those parameters can instead be specified in the gummiboot or GRUB configuration file, which is easier to manage for quite a few reasons.
If you want to pursue using the EFI stub loader directly, you certainly can. I've learned from experience, though, that it's not worth my time to try to help with users who want to do this. Using an intermediary program is easier to get working. IMHO, the direct approach has no real benefits except that it gives you bragging rights that you've done it. Your system won't boot any faster or more reliably in the more direct approach. (Well, technically it will be faster, by only by a matter of milliseconds, assuming you use a 0 timeout value in gummiboot.) In fact, it will be less reliable, because gummiboot, GRUB, and rEFInd all offer ways to adjust boot options on a boot-by-boot basis, which is very helpful when fixing problems. You can't do this with the direct approach.

  • Hibernate Windows XP and Boot Mac OS X

I primarily use WinXP on my White Macbook, but at times find it useful to use Mac OS X. However, often times I have lots of windows and data open in Windows, and it is a hassle to close out of everything and reboot to get into Mac OS X. Is there any way to hibernate Windows and then boot into Mac OS X (and then when done, boot back into the hibernated Windows so that all my data and apps remain open where I left them)? Or will this just not work, or risk causing major problems? Any help is appreciated.
P.S. I haven't even tried Hibernation with WinXP on my Macbook yet, so I have no idea if hibernation itself even works, much less what I'm looking to attempt.
    - Marc

    Hi Marc,
while admitting that I never used hibernation with XP, what you want should be doable.
Hibernate saves an image of your desktop with all open files and documents, and then it powers down your computer. When you turn on power, your files and documents are open on your desktop exactly as you left them when you boot back into Windows XP.
In between you can boot into OSX and do what you want.
Before trying out Hibernation it might be a good advise to have/make a backup of your XP, just in case.
And make sure that you have enough free disk space on your Windows partition.

  • I can not use my mouse or keyboard when I am trying to install windows via boot camp

    Please can you help!
I can not use my mouse or keyboard when I am trying to install windows via boot camp

Starting a couple of days ago my mouse and keyboard stopped working suddenly.
How are they connected?   In my case they are wireless and their receiver is plugged into my USB hub.  After an update I found the OS inexplicably not recognizing my USB hub and hence any devices which were plugged into it.  My fix was to
plug the receiver into a different USB port (so I could use the mouse and keyboard; otherwise I would have had to use the OSK via Touch or pen.)  Once I had normal access into my machine again I used Device Manager to remove all USB controller and
hubs (including hidden ones) and I then shut down, disconnected all USB devices and powered back up, this time using only Touch to get going.  Once the OS had settled down I started plugging stuff back in the way that I wanted it to be recognized.
If I didn't have Touch I would have had to have left the wireless receiver plugged in both places which I assume would be OK.  I have no idea why updates have such a catastrophic effect for USB devices.

  • SCCM's OSD (not MDT): Task sequence can be tweaked into imaging Windows+VHD Native Boot, but can it go all the way and deploy?

    Hello All,
What I am trying to do is use SCCM's own OSD Task Sequence / Windows PE to deploy an operating system that boots using VHD Native Boot. (C:\ = VHD File  with Windows, D:\ Data drive with BCDBoot).
MDT 2013 Can do it I've been told, but I am putting off MDT until Windows 10 if I can get away with it.
TechNet VHD Native Boot on Windows 8.1:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh825689.aspx
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh825691.aspx
The good news is it is working up to the "Apply Operating System" phase, but that apply operating system phase is reported as an error even though it completes successfully. It can't clean up the SMSTS folder it's looking for on the C:\ because
it's been moved over to the D:\ by a diskpart script. We are left with the deployment working but requiring IT staff to deal with the OOBE Personalization wizard and adding each PC to the domain manually. From that point on the SCCM client can do the rest,
which works for US before we upgrade to Windows 10 with utilizing MDT.
I am not talking about deploying an OS to a VHD file and putting that file on a network share i.e.
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/configurationmgr/archive/2013/10/31/new-in-system-center-2012-r2-configuration-manager-deploying-an-operating-system-to-a-virtual-hard-drive-vhd.aspx
I reported getting the diskpart script working first here:
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/ff124f09-1d2e-4fc4-a5b6-63b683f3d208/native-vhd-boot-deployments-from-sccm-2012-r2?forum=configmanagerosd
    Here it is:
rem work around any USB disk left in or any CDROM detected by PE as drive D
    select volume D
    assign letter=F noerr
rem select the formatted volume and reassign it's drive letter
    select volume C
    assign letter=D
rem create and setup VHD file
    create vdisk file=D:\DEV_WIN81.VHD maximum=250000 type=expandable
    select vdisk file=D:\DEV_WIN81.VHD
    attach vdisk
    create partition primary
    active
    format FS=NTFS quick label="Developer Win81 VHD"
    assign letter=C
    rescan
    exit
(type=fixed is better for performance - we'll surely activate when we have dual boot 8.1 / Windows 10 later for the Win10 VHD's)
The Task Sequence looks like this:
I'd like to add a few more steps after apply operating system if I can, but I have to resolve this error with "Apply Operating system before I can go further."
    Question:
Can an OSD guru tell me if there are any Task Sequence Variables we could throw at this to make the Apply Operating System sequence complete without error so we can do all SCCM OSD Deployment steps?
If we can, then someone (not me) gets to add a new TechNet blog post about this being possible. It's my understanding presently that only MDT can support deploying WIM files into VHDs on Workstations, that boot them.
The install image was created using dism to convert a VHD from a Hyper-V host into a wim. I know I'm meant to use SCCM to capture it, but I don't think that's causing this problem because when we are deploying from that image to a HDD without VHD we don't
    get any issues.
I'm only allowed enough characters to paste the tail end of the apply operating system phase only:

    MCSE,MCNE,SCO,Sair Linux/GNU, Open source-enthusiast.

I have already set it to FALSE. The solution to this will be some different OSD Task Sequence variables or a statement that it can't be made to work.
I believe that setting defines what volume will be the BOOT / OS Drive Letter. Some people were getting D:\WINDOWS as their boot volume drive letter. Setting to true means whatever was the System Drive letter (usually C) in the image will remain as such
after it was was applied, setting it to false will make the system have the same drive letter arrangement as what Windows PE detects. In my case I set it to false so that no matter what the new VHD file setup as drive C will be the system drive. I'll set it
to true on the next deployment but I expect there to be no difference, because in both PE and the WIM the installation volume is the C:.
We are talking about the DRIVE LETTERS Windows PE SCCM OSD is using for it's temporary files - and how we can manipulate these locations using OSD Task Sequence Variables, so the Apply OS doesn't try and clean up files that are not there
    - and fail with an error if you have added a VHD Native Boot volume.
This OSDPreserveDriveLetter setting isn't having any effect on the problem here.
I believe that Format step is setting some task variables used by the OSD Deployment process - telling it where to store it's temporary files. However between the Format Disks and Apply operating system steps the OSD Task Sequence isn't picking up on the
fact what was the C:\ after Format HDD step is now the D:\ .
A developer who has an understanding of how the OSD boot process executes in order would be able to see what's going on here.

Only Apple could hamstring and tie Mac OS to Windows. There isn't any other than whether you can download the drivers into Windows (you can) but Apple puts a block on the installer setup even if your mac does not support it.
Windows 7 needs at least Boot Camp 3.1 and 3.3 is what you should already have. And you are not getting security updates if you don't have at least 10.6.8 as was pointed out.  --- you arent using Software Update as you should. And you should backup and clone Mac (and Windows) as well.
You need Mountain Lion to use Boot Camp 5.x which supports Windows 7 & 8 and 64-bit.
I would upgrade to Lion if you can realizing that Rosetta and PowerPC are no longer supported though.

Is there a download of the Boot Camp 5 Support Software if I'm not using OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.3?
Yes, you can download the Boot Camp 5 Support Software here.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1638
How do I use the Boot Camp 5 Support Software I downloaded from the web page?
The download file is a .zip file. Double click it to uncompress it.
Double-click the Boot Camp disk image.
Copy the Boot Camp and "$WinPEDriver$" folders to the root level of a USB flash drive or hard drive that is formatted with the FAT file system (see question below for steps on how to format).
Install Windows, leaving the flash or hard drive attached to the USB port of your Mac.
Installation of the drivers can take a few minutes. Don't interrupt the installation process. A completion dialog box will appear when everything is installed. Click Finish when the dialog appears.
When your system restarts your Windows 8 installation is done.
Note: If the flash drive or hard drive was not attached when you installed Windows and was inserted after restarting into Windows 8, double-click the Boot Camp folder, then locate and double click the "setup.exe" file to start the installation of the Boot Camp 5 Support Software.
How do I format USB media to the FAT file system?
Use Disk Utility to format a disk to use with a Windows computer. Here's how:
Important: Formatting a disk erases all the files on it. Copy any files you want to save to another disk before formatting the disk.
    Open Disk Utility.
Select the disk you want to format for use with Windows computers.
Click Erase, and choose one of the following from the Format pop-up menu:
If the size of the disk is 32 GB or less, choose MS-DOS (FAT).
If the size of the disk is over 32 GB, choose ExFAT.
Type a name for the disk. The maximum length is 11 characters.
Click the Erase button and then click Erase again.
Which versions of Windows are supported with Boot Camp 5?
64-bit versions of Windows 8 and Windows 7 are supported using the Boot Camp 5 Support Software. If you need to use a 32-bit version, you need to use Boot Camp 4 Support Software, and you must use Windows 7. 32-bit versions of Windows 8 are not supported via Boot Camp. • Can I partition my external hard drive so that one partition is for Time Machine and the other is to install Windows with Boot Camp?

I have a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1TB USB 3.0 external hard drive that I currently use just for Time Machine backups.  Is it possible for me to go into Disk Utility and create a new partition on the drive so that I may install Windows 7 via Boot Camp? Or since I am already using it for Time Machine do I have to keep it only for Time Machine?

You must install Boot Camp in your internal drive because Windows can't be installed in an external disk and Boot Camp can't do that

  • How can I get Windows 7 Boot Camp to find my Magic Mouse?

    Hey!
So I just bought a Magic Mouse and it works flawlessly in OS X.
But when I use Windows 7 Boot Camp I can't find the mouse to add it as a new device. My bluetooth works just fine and I have the Boot Camp 3.3 drivers.
I tried rebooting, turning the mouse off and on, read a bunch of guides on the internet but no one is having issues CONNECTING the mouse, only getting it to work, so my research is proving to be hard.
    Can you guys help me?
    Thanks!

    Hi Maia,
Can you please mention your MAC model (MBA 2011, MBP, iMac?). Which OS X version?. Have you problems pairing other bluetooth devices?
You may want to try the following setps.
1.- First make sure that you have the latest EFI and software updates. Including latest bootcamp bluetooth drivers.
2.- Unpair MM in Mac OSX
3.- Do a Nvram and SMC reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
    4.- Restart
5.- Pair your MM under Mac OSX
6.- Boot on Bootcamp assiging bootcamp as a starting partition
    7.- Add your device.
Let me know if that worked, there are another tricks you can try but I need additional information.

    There are several possibilities.
    1. You do not have contiguous free disk space.
    2. BCA has failed, or you may have a Fusion drive which is causing problems.
    3. You have incorrect permissions on the disk.

I've had a Win7 boot partition on my 2011 MBP for a while and it boots just fine. I have a Mac boot partition, a Mac data partition, and a NTFS Win 7 partition. But the Boot Camp partition is greyed out and invisible when booted in to the Mac.
When in Windows, I can see and use the Mac partition from Win7 with MacDrive. The problem is that I cannot see the Windows partition from the Mac. I have Paragon NTFS for Mac installed as well as MacFuse. I tried to see the partition with CampTune and got this error:
I also tried going to the BootCamp Assistant and saw this:
Yet when booted in Windows, I see the Mac partition just fine.

Does anyone know if I can repair this without having to re-format? I have a 13" White MacBook as well and this setup works just fine. I did it such a long time ago that I forgot how I did the first one.
There is another thread on here that similar but not quite like my problem because I ca actually boo into Windows.
If anyone can help it would certainly be appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Randy
