What, where and how to cache?

Hi Guys
After some net surfing I came across the 2003 JavaOne presentation by Peschansky, Junnarkar, Prasad on The Promise and Challenges of Multi-Tiered Caching in J2EE Web Applications. We are using Oracle 9iAS with the BC4J framework. The system has some values setup in the database that are the values defined for dropdown type entry fields. As the dropdown field lists are determined by the context in which they are used, they are currently being generated on the application module level. Each dropdown list is selected via a ViewObject from the database. As these values rarely change we are considering more efficient ways of constructing these lists. The entity objects(EJBs) for the view rows are cached, but in our implementation per transaction. A Server Accelerator(Reverse Proxy) caching solution appears to be a good idea. Some pooled lookup manager service may be helpful as far as scalability and availability goes. Are there some user guides/white papers available that can tell me how to accomplish this with BC4J?
What would the accepted best practice be?
Thanks
Retha

Apple cannot help you locate the original owner. If you have no way to contact him/her, and you purchased directly from the seller rather than through a site that offers buyer protection, then the iPad is useless to you and you have wasted your money. The iPad is quite probably stolen and you should turn it in to the police.
This is why it's very risky and usually unwise to purchase out of a car boot from someone you don't know.

I'm on Mountain Lion and have version 6.1 of AirPort utility so there is no button to "Disconnect All Users"and the only other option of "removing and re-selecting the drive via Time Machine Prefs" doesn't work either. So this will work.
Launch Airport Utility and select the TC "Edit" button, then select the Disks tab. Deselect "Enable File Sharing" and click "Update". The TC will reboot then follow the same procedure and reselect "Enable File Sharing" and click "Update". After TC reboots again you'll be up and running. Not the neatest way to do it but saves having to unplug the TC which risks disk damage and the whole procedure takes less than a minute. The "Enable File Sharing" button seems to have replaced the "Disconnect All Users" button but with the slight disadvantage that it reboots the TC which takes up additional time.

  • Factory reset - the what, why, and how for Gingerbread

I wanted to share this information regarding a Factory Reset and how it is used for Gingerbread - both the what, why, and how - in case anyone is interested in the details. If you embark on this process, this thread is worth a close read. thanks to d.harris for writing this up for the SOAK group. good luck everyone and remember, YMMV.
First, what does a "factory reset" do? The short answer is: it will return your phone to the condition it was in when you first purchased it EXCEPT the Android version will match your phone's latest update. For example, I had Android 2.2.1 (Froyo) on my phone before the "soak". My phone was updated to Android 2.3.3 (Gingerbread or "GB") during the "soak". I had some trouble with video performance in the Fox News app and missing album cover art in the Google Music app. So I decided to do the factory reset. After the reset was finished, my Droid X still had Android 2.3.3 on it but all of the settings had been restored to their factory defaults. And presumably, all Android operating system (OS) caches had been flushed. All of the data that was stored in my phone's memory was cleared. So my contacts were all gone. And I had to reactivate my phone (*228 1) just like a new phone and reenter my Google account info.
Does a factory reset actually clear the entire contents of the phone's memory and re-install Android from scratch? (That's what I wish it did.) But I'm not sure that it does that because the entire process seems to go too fast for that. However, a factory reset does seem to do a better job of cleaning out the remnants of the previous OS (Froyo 2.2.1) than a standard "update" does. But that's not all.
The factory reset also clears all of the apps that were installed in the phone's memory. And it clears all of the app data that was installed in the phone's memory. So you will have to reinstall all of your apps from the Android Market (or wherever they came from). Normally, you do not have to pay for them again because the Android Market remembers your previous purchases as long as you register your phone with the same Google account.
However, the Android Market does not remember the free apps that you installed---so you should make a list of all your apps before you reset your phone so you won't forget the free ones. The reason I wrote "installed in the phone's memory" above is because a factory reset gives you a choice whether or not to clear your phone's micro SD memory card. If desired, it will leave it alone. So any apps or data will still be present on your card after the reset. However, your phone will not be aware of the apps on the memory card because all "knowledge" of them will have been erased from your phone's internal memory---you'll still have to reinstall ALL of your apps. But the data files will still be there. Regarding the "built-in" apps that come pre-installed with Android, they will also be restored to their original state and version when you do a factory reset. So you'll need to update some of them (like updating Google Maps and updating Adobe Flash from 10.1 to 10.3).
Before you do a factory reset, you should have a fully charged battery becaues you do NOT want to run out of power in the middle of a reset---that could "brick" your phone. I always take an extra precaution: in addition to a fully charged battery, I also connect my phone to AC with the Motorola AC-to-USB charging adapter that came with it. Not only does it insure that I won't run out of power, it also keeps my battery fully charged so I have a 100% charge after the factory reset (you'll have a lot of work to do afterward to reinstall your apps and restore all of your Android and app settings back to your preferences).
    Here's a pre reset checklist:
    • Export your contacts to your SD card so you can easily restore them later (Contacts/Dialer menu > Import/Export > Export contacts to: SD card).
    • Make a list of all of the apps that you installed (Android menu > Manage Apps > Downloaded tab).
    • Get a copy of your Google account login info (user name and password).
    • Get a copy of your Verizon Backup Assistant PIN (if you use this service).
    • Turn off your phone and pull its battery. Wait 30 seconds or more and reinstall the battery and turn the phone back on. This will make sure that there is nothing hinky in your phone's volatile memory as the factory reset begins.
    • Fully charge your phone's battery and plug the AC charging adapter into the phone.
Now you're ready to do the deed. Follow these steps:
    1. If it's not already on, turn on Google's "back up my data" option with Android menu > Settings > Privacy > Back up my data. This is required for the next step.
    2. Turn off the "automatic restore" option with Android menu > Settings > Privacy > Automatic restore. This will prevent your phone from trying to download every paid app that was previously on your phone all at once. It is much better---especially if you have a lot of apps---to install them one at a time. Plus, you may not want some of them to be reinstalled right away if you are trying to determine if one of them is causing trouble under GB 2.3.3.
3 If you do not want to use Google's "back up my data" service to restore your wi-fi passwords and such, then return to Step 1 and turn it off.
    4. Begin the factory reset with Android menu > Settings > Privacy > Factory Data Reset. You'll be asked to confirm that you really want to do a factory reset and you'll be given the opportunity to clear your micro SD memory card as a part of the process. I chose not to clear my memory card because I have a 32 GB card with "tons" of music and other files that I do not want to have to restore (it would take hours).
When should you do a factory reset? Everyone should do it before they give their phone away, sell it, or discard it. You don't want someone else to have access to your personal data! And, a factory reset can be a helpful troubleshooting tool when faced with problems.
By the way, my factory reset did not help the video problem I was having with the Fox News app nor did it enable Google's Music app to find all of the album art on my micro SD card. Both problems persisted after the reset under GB 2.3.3.
Finally, there are other things you can do to flush old data from your phone such as clearing the cache partition of your phone's built-in memory. This requires the use of its "Android system recover" menu. Even though I expect this cache data to be cleared during a factory reset, I did it after my reset just to make sure. Clearing the cache partition is usually what folks try before a factory rest so they can (hopefully) avoid the factory reset. I'll leave it to a Motorola staff person to go into that.

OK, got it ...  the Power ON Factory reset procedures might have changed with GB ...
To get to a Factory reset using the Power up method:
    1.  Power Off phone
    2. Press & Hold the HOME Button
    3. Press and Hold the Power ON button.
You come up to the Triangle with the Exclamation mark & android guy.
Press BOTH the Up and Down Buttons at the same time.  This brings up the Blue menu of options.
use the Up/Down arrows to scroll thru the choices. Press the POWER Button to Select the menu item you choose.
You can harmlessly test this and just choose to Reboot without doing anything, just to see how it works in case you ever need to do this in the future.
edit:  It was concluded in the test group that they changed this process to align it with the new DX2 as the camera button isn't hard-wired like it is in the DX. So likely they just wanted to make this process the same for both platforms.  At least it sounds like a good reason...

  • Last night, mail suddenly lost all my emails, which were stored in mailboxes.  What happened and how can I find my lost files?  I have the latest MacBookPro, running Lion 10.7.2 all software updates installed

Last night the mail application from Apple lost all my old emails, which were stored in mailboxes, neatly sorted by category.  What happened and how do I find them?
Details:  I shut down mail to run errands outside my office.  My late model MacBook Pro was on "sleep".  When I returned, I opened the application, and (RATS!) all the mailboxes were missing.  They just evaporated.
Operating system:  10.7.2 - all software updates installed and current as of 24 hours ago (12-30-11, 6 AM EST).
ln the mail program, the trash folder is OK and the sent folder is OK.
Yesterday, I did no maintenance on my mail folders.
    HELP!

1 - the sudden disappearance of my 22 mailboxes, used to sort the emails that I need to file for future use
That was most likely the result of some kind of corruption, as I've already said, not a bug in Mail.  Have you repaired the hard drive with Disk Utility recently?  That wouldn't be a bad idea.
2 - at random times, mail (or the server) says that my password is incorrect and I must reenter (fix:  usually I can quit mail, restart, and the connection is restored without reentering my password)
This is a known issue, where a failure to respond promptly on the server's end mimics what happens when the password is rejected.  There's no need to quit Mail, just cancel when asked to enter the password, take the account back online and try again.
3 - mail seems to resort the mail in my mailboxes at random time.  Several times a day, I must reset the sort to (a) by date; (b) by desending
Never seen that before.  That points more to some kind of possible corruption in your Mail data or preference files.

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping.  Note that in iTunes 11 an "empty" library may show your past purchases with links to stream or download them.
In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
Alternatively, depending on exactly when and why the library went missing, there may be a more recent .tmp file in the main iTunes folder that can be renamed as iTunes Library.itl to restore the library to a recent state.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
I've noticed more of these missing library posts of late and a common factor since I started asking is AVG Anti-Virus. It seems it might be at least part of the reason why the library file disappears. Try excluding the iTunes folder from any real-time scanning process.

    Welcome!
Last question first, as we need to know what operating system that the Mac is using.
If you are not sure, click the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen, then click About This Mac, and post back with the OS X Version number that you see there.
Two possible solutions on the power cord

  • Where and how can I place and setup my airport to reduce EMF exposure?

I want to reduce EMF exposure from the Airport Time Machine which is sitting on my desk right now. Where and how can I place and setup it up?

What role does the TC have in your network?
If you do not want EMF (actually RF), exposure, move it as far as possible away. There is no rules.. but the inverse square law.. if you double the distance the radiation will drop by 4times. So for every double distance you drop RF by another 4times. Far more EMF is coming from the computer than the TC. So you should move that away as well if you are worried about EMF.
Let me also say, as doubtless others will, the RF exposure from TC or any wifi is tiny.
Firstly they do not continuously transmit.. it will pole briefly every few seconds but only will transmit during actual file transfer.
The power output of say a cordless phone is aprox 10x that of the TC. And that is or can be the same microwave freq as wifi or near to.
The mobile phone in your pocket is doing the same thing.
There is no proof that microwave radiation at such minute levels will do anything harmful.
If you have headaches etc which you believe are caused by wireless.. then do not use wireless.. turn it off and cable everything. Shield your house as well.
As a general principle.. shielding is effective.. If for instance you have a 27" imac on your desk.. place the TC on the wall behind the imac.. the metal of the imac will shield you to some extent.. although of course some radiation will bounce from other objects.
Any shielding of the TC will reduce its effective wireless range.. ie you can put the TC in a metal cage.. (look up Faraday Cage) which will stop all radiation.. If you open windows in the cage.. it should only get signal in those directions but it is not a neat easy rule. And obviously I can achieve the same thing by simply turning the wireless off.
The v5 utility has a control of power output on the TC.
This is just the same as distance.
Transmit power is able to be set to 10%, 25% and 50%. At the cost of range of course.
If you run Mountain Lion you will have to use tricks to load it.. but it can be done. Lion you can download it.
