what would the benifits be of getting an iPad with cellular?

rbrylawski wrote:
Of course, if you have an iPhone, you can tether the 3G data to a Wifi only iPad.  And most carriers sell Mifi (portable hotspots).  So, point number 2 may not be as important.  And quite honestly, not having a true GPS chip hasn't, at least for me, been a negative issue.
Don't forget, however, that using external MiFi hotspots is very awkward because
- they need to be constantly powered on/off when you need to connect via them
- when you regain true Wi-Fi access, the iPad won't disconnect from your MiFi but go on using its connection. You need to switch networks manually.
It's mostly the latter that I hated the most when using my iPad 2 with an external MiFi. (And this is why I've switched back to a 3G model when purchasing the iPad 3. No need to manual Wi-Fi network switching any more - what a relief!)

$10 if you are on Share Everything.  Plus, look to see if you need to increase the data you currently have to accomodate for the extra usage you will go through.

You can't share with other devices if you are using different Apple ID's and iTunes account on them. You can only share if you use the same ID.

  • What's the right way to get in touch with devs? arch-general list?

tl;dr version: skip to the questions at the bottom
Today I saw an unfortunate thing happen during the Bug Day proceedings. It surprised me to see it, because the knowledge needed to avoid the problem was made available in advance. Bear with me as I tell a story, so I can point out an example of what looks like a communication problem between users and devs.
A while back, I sent mail to arch-general giving advance notice of upcoming releases (within the next two days) for some xiph.org software (libogg, libvorbis, libao, and vorbis-tools). No one responded to it. That's not really a problem - after all, there wasn't any work to be done yet, since the releases weren't finalized yet.
When the releases happened, I flagged them out of date as usual, and provided extra details to avoid difficulty with the upgrades (whether rebuilds were needed, and which upgrades depended on which other upgrades). One package belonged to Snowman, two to Tobias K, and the last (and most difficult) to Hugo D. I knew Hugo was no longer a dev, and later saw that Eric was going inactive also. (I don't know Tobias K's status.) That's probably part of the problem - this info getting lost since it wasn't sent to the same devs who later did the upgrades. (I guess the "multiple owners" feature should help alleviate this problem.)
A few days back, I sent another mail to arch-general. I admit that I was nagging a bit, though I do believe that I was contributing helpful info - mostly the same as I put in the flagging messages. Again, no one responded. Not exactly nice, but again, not wrong either. You'll get to it when you get to it, and I can (and did) do these rebuilds for myself. Note that I'm NOT complaining about a week or two lag in updating packages - that's perfectly reasonable, and I'd be a huge jerk to make noise about that.
Today, bash was doing upgrades to close bugs, with help on IRC from Pierre and wonder. One of those packages was libvorbis, and he wondered if a rebuild would be needed. I knew for sure that it wasn't, and told him so, which he acknowledged with a "thank you". He then went on to duplicate my research, which felt a little odd to me. In the end, this package was upgraded perfectly fine.
The other package he upgraded was vorbis-tools. Unfortunately, building that against the old libao in [extra] generates an incomplete package, missing ogg123. When I saw this problem, I opened a bug, and had it handled exactly as I thought it should have been. The end result was fine.
Now, the point here is that I had identified the dependency of the new vorbis-tools on the new libao in several of my previous messages, and reading those could have saved some trouble. It's reasonable that no one working this on IRC today saw my flagging messages, since I understand that those only go to the maintainer. However, my second mail to arch-general was definitely available, and based on what happened today, no one it would have been useful to, actually read it. That's a communication breakdown, and that means somebody did something wrong. It's entirely likely that it was me, and I want to know the solution.
I've always believed that arch-general is the best way for an ordinary user to get in touch with "the devs" as a body. Many devs don't go on IRC, and it's a bit too busy in there most of the time anyway. Many devs also don't hang out here on the forums, and that's easy to understand as well, given how high-volume they are now. The bug tracker generally gets excellent dev responses, in terms of both timeliness and quality, but it's not appropriate for communications that are not bugs. All devs seem to read arch-dev-public, but users like myself of course can't post there.
So arch-general has to be it. In fact, I always thought that was the intended purpose of that list. Until recently, it was a low-volume list. Lately, it's grown quite a bit, and is starting to resemble these forums: general tech support questions (some of them stupid), users plugging their own creations, and just chatter. (There are a small handful of posters accounting for a great deal of the noise.) I keep wanting to tell them to take it to the forums, but restrain myself as I'm not really sure if I'm right about their posts not being appropriate for the list. I'd leave the list, as it now annoys me, but then I can't reply to things posted on arch-dev-public. (Probably what I'll really do if this keeps up is stop using [testing], so I can do away with both of those lists. Oh well.)
    Now, the questions here:
    - Are devs also dropping out of arch-general because of the increasing noise, and is that why my second mail got lost?
    - Are the "noisy" posters abusing the list, and should they be told to go to the forums instead?
    - Is arch-general actually intended as the primary way for users to talk to devs?
    - If so, how to fix it so it works that way again?
    - If not, where should I have been sending messages like the ones I linked to in this post?

I think almost every dev is on arch-general, so that is the place to contact the group in general.  Specific points can probably be emailed to the dev involved, if one is identifiable and if the bug tracker is not a better place (bug reports to my email get ignored).
I think the whole problem here is that there is really no dev in charge of that package.  So your emails were probably seen then skipped over by all devs thinking not my problem...  (I know that is true for me).   Then Andrea noticed an "orphan" package that needed updated and went ahead with it without connecting it to your previous emails, which is unfortunate.
Now our maintainer backend is fixed, hopefully we can get all the orphan packages adopted out, or at least know if we need to bring on new people to maintain them.  That way, there should always be someone who information about specific packages should be sent to.

  • Can someone explain to me the added features if I get an iPad with cellular?

I am looking at buying an iPad for my 11 year old.  Can you explain the advantages of wifi + cellular to me?  I don't understand the features of having cellular added on?

They are the same feature wise. The only difference is how the connect to the internet.
If you have WiFi only you can only get internet access while connected to a WiFi hot spot or access point.
WiFi + Cellular has internet access when no WiFi is available like your cell phone

Can you get a battery replacement at an Apple store while you wait? What would the rough cost be, out of warranty?

I am not sure what device you are trying to replace the battery on, but usually the battery is at least 30% of the cost of the device from what I have read. Apple likes to keep a monopoly on batteries I think. I have never seen them replace a battery at the store, usually they have to ship it out. You can find batteries for sale online, but you will have to crack the device open yourself.

I'd just like to say that ahs70's post on Dec 1, 2013 at 1:17am on Pg. 9 worked for me as well: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5338609?start=120&tstart=0
If your iPhone's battery is acting up you need to determine if it's a software issue or a hardware/battery issue.  To do that, after syncing your iPhone, erase/hard reset all data and settings from your iPhone to what it was from the factory as new.  This can be found in Settings/General/Reset/Erase All Content and Settings.  Then test it out for a day or two.  If it's still acting up then it's likely a hardware issue and you will need to get your battery replaced.  If your warranty is done than check out this link to get a battery kit to replace your iPhone battery yourself:  http://www.ifixit.com/Store/iPhone/iPhone-5-Replacement-Battery/IF118-001#produc tDescription
If your iPhone is now working properly after hard resetting it than it's most likely a software issue.  This battery issue only started after upgrading to the new iOs7, so it is obviously related to the update not properly installing itself.  What has worked for me and many others is to manually update to iOS 7.0.4 using the full downloaded version of the update which is about 1.32 Gigs.
But first you need to find out what model of iPhone you have, click here to determine if it's GSM or CDMA: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3939?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
Then go here and scroll down to download the iOS 7.0.4 complete update for your device:  http://www.downloadios7.org/download-ios-7-0-4-ipsw-file.html
Then scroll up on the download page and follow the instructions of updating your iPhone manually following the instructions below:  "IPSW with iTunes"
    And your done.
    Problem solved.
I only posted this because it was a very frustrating problem that no one really seemed to figure out a solution for.
    I hope this helps.

  • What's the fastest way to get a broken phone replaced?

    Summary:
What a joke. Clearly broken iPhone, but when I get to the store, no one will help me. I have to make an appointment with a "Genius" and come back later. In the meantime, no phone for me.
Anyone know the secret code to get timely help with a broken iPhone?
    Details:
iPhone crashed yesterday around 5:00. Wouldn't go past Apple logo. Using the recovery mode, I have:
    - Restored using my backup.
    - Deleted my backup and restored to a "new phone".
    - Re-downloaded and re-installed iTunes, deleted my backup, and restored to a new phone.
    - Uninstalled iTunes, deleted all ipsw files, redownloaded and reinstalled iTunes and restored to a "new phone"
After each of these, the situation is the same. The phone works (albeit very slowly and unevenly) until I turn it off (off off, not standby). When I turn it back on, stuck at the apple logo again.
So now I sit at the apple store, hoping someone will miss their appointment and I can sneak in off the standby list. What a joke. I'm definitely going to have to swing by the at&t store and see about switching to a phone that has adequate support when it breaks. I love the iPhone interface, but with a complete meltdown in the first 6 weeks of ownership and the long wait to see someone to get it replaced, it's just not reliable enough as a phone (not to mention the fact that the 3G really isn't ready for primetime). Sigh.

Make an appointment at the Genius Bar - http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ . You can also do it in store on any of the Macs there. It beats sitting around hopping a slot will open up.
I did both - I scheduled the earliest available appointment, but it was hours away and I needed my phone, so I tried waiting for a hour or so as well.

See my answer to your last post.
Are you some sort of VIP that I don't know about? Why should you get to just walk in and have your problem solved when others made a Genius Bar appointment and showed up for it.
I don't think I'm better than anyone else. I think anyone with a broken phone should be able to get immediate assistance. I wasn't looking for training in how to use my phone, or assistance with some obscure functionality - the freaking thing wouldn't turn all the way on and couldn't be used for it's primary purpose, that of a mobile phone.

I suppose you do the same thing when walking into a doctor's office without making an appointment and expect him to see you about your cholesterol being high? You'd go into an ER for an emergency like a broken arm but you're gonna have to wait in line just like everyone else unless it's a life-threatening condition.
See my response above. If my phone wasn't "feeling well", I could live with waiting to talk to someone. But my phone was in a persistent vegitative state and deserving of urgent care.
The one time I had a problem with my Motorola RAZR, I walked into an at&t store and the next available person helped me out (by replacing the nonfunctional phone). I didn't have to make an appointment with a special subset of the staff. I would expect Apple, the actual manufacturer (and, in my case, vendor) of the phone to at least meet the standard that at&t sets for phones they don't even manufacture.
And I hope for the sake for Apple's enterprise penetration plans that they don't share your misconception that this is just a matter of "hampering my lifestyle". It's a matter of interrupting mission critical infrastructure functionality.

  • What is the fastest way of getting data?

With a scanning electron microscope, I need to scan a 512*512 pixel area with a pixel repetition of 15000 (two channels), meaning averaging over 15000 measurements. Simultaneously I have to adjust the voltage output for every pixel.
I am using a 6111E Multifunction I/O board in a 800MHz P3. The whole task has do be done as fast as possible (not more than 20 minutes altogether).
What is the fastest way to get this huge amount of data with averaging and output in between? (E.g. do I use buffered read with hardware triggering or is there a faster way?)

Using the NI-DAQ API (not LabView) will give you a significant amount of more control over what happens and when to the data stream; which translates to a more efficient program. But you need to program in C/C++ or Delphi then. The Measurement Studio provides ActiveX controls that are like the LabView ones for C&C++ (theyre slow like the LabView ones though not a lot you can do about the Windows GDI).
What are you trying to sample 15000 times? The 512*512 pixel field?
Thats almost 15Gigs of data! And it means you need to process data at 12.8MB/s to finish it in 20 minutes. I hope you know C, x86 assembly and MMX.
I would setup a huge circular buffer (NI-DAQ calls them double buffers), about 30 seconds worth or so, to use with SCAN_Start. Then I would proces
s the actual buffer the card is DMAing the data into with a high priority thread. Progressively sum the scan values from the 16bit buffer (the samples are only 12 bit, but the buffer should still be 16bits wide) into a secondary buffer of DWORDs the size of the screen (512*512), and youll need two of those, one for each channel. Once the 15000 scans are complete, convert each entry into a float divide by 15000.0f, and store it in a third buffer of floats.
If you wish to contract this out, send me an email at [email protected]

What is the best way to get a tune created in GB for iPad into iMovie for iPad?

Haven't done it myself, but seems like the correct workflow would be:
From GarageBand (iOS), My Songs -> select song -> Send to iTunes
From iMovie HD (iOS), My Project -> Insert Media -> select by song name
I'm not sure if GB creates its own playlist for tagging exported songs in your iTunes library so selecting by name would be the next-best method.
    Have you tried this?

  • What's the correct way to get changes in my iTunes library to sync to my iPod

It's been a few years since I've used itunes, so please bear with me.
I'm trying to get my ipod setup but something seems weird. In the past, if I made changes to my itunes library, then plugged in my ipod, those changes would immediately sync. It's not doing that now. When I plug the ipod in, I click on the ipod symbol near the top-right to get to the connected ipod. If I click on "on this ipod" I can clearly see that the old files/metadata are still present. When I click the "sync" button down at the bottom (next to the storage bar) nothing happens. If I click on "Music" near the top (between Summary and Movies) there's a check-box next to "Sync Music" but when I click that it says "Are you sure you want to remove existing music, movies, and tv shows from this ipod and sync with this itunes library?". I don't want to have to wipe the thing clean and then re-write EVERYTHING again every time I want to make a change, that's crazy.
So what am I missing here? Is there some setting that would make it work the way it did in the past, automatically syncing changes as soon as I plug in the ipod? If not, what's the best way to get the changes to sync over without having to wipe the ipod clean every time? Does the "Sync Music" option I mentioned not actually remove everything, but just sync any changes that were made? That's the only thing I can come up with.

Because you are not syncing your music (you have Sync music unchecked).
If not, what's the best way to get the changes to sync over without having to wipe the ipod clean every time? Does the "Sync Music" option I mentioned not actually remove everything,
It shouldn't wipe everything but it will make the iPod match what you have selected in iTunes. So if it's on your iPod now and also in iTunes, it won't remove it then re-add it.
Is everything on your iPod actually in iTunes? If so, click away.
How do I get it to stay checked then? I've checked it and gone through the sync process, but every time I go back to that window, it's un-checked again, and I have to sync manually.
Ok, that's what I was hoping, it just syncs any changes. I've done it this way a couple times but couldn't tell for sure if it was just removing then re-adding evertying or if it was just syncing changes.
