ical Channels says 'No supported devices found'. I am using the Polhemus Fastrak and attempting to write a driver for the Serial port interface. Please explain how to find the supportive devices. My background in DAQ and Labview is very weak. THANKS!!!You do not have a DAQ device in the sense of having a board in the PC that does data acquisition. You cannot use any of the DAQ or DAQmx functions for communication with your serial instrument. In your posting to the LabVIEW General forum, you stated that you were using VISA. That is the correct approach. First however, you should try to communicate with the device using something like Hyperterminal and verify all of the settings and cable are correct before trying to write a driver. You might want to take a look at this tutorial.

  • USe labview to to read hardware ports

    Hi ,
I would like to know if Labview progranming language is capable
of reading hardware ports from a computer( ie I make a card that plugs into
    a PCI
slot of my computer, is there a way to speak to that card from labview)

The answer is: yes, with some qualifications depending on the OS you are
running. The Online Help or reference manuals should provide info on the
built-in "In Port" and "Out Port" functions for port I/O, and there are some
good resources on the NI Web site for additional help if you're running NT or
    equivalent, such as:
    http://zone.ni.com/devzone/devzoneweb.nsf/opendoc?openagent&2851D0A06E3185BC8625683A000AC730&cat=034E59A8530E09DF862568900018707A
Rummage around for "in port" or "hardware registers" on the NI site.

  • Strange small glyph in the middle of the screen when using LabVIEW 8.2.1

I've started noticing a strange small glyph in the middle of the screen when I am using LabVIEW 8.2.1.
Sometimes it is there, sometimes it isn't. Has anyone else seen this? Why is it there? Can I get rid of it?
(Just in case you think I am going crazy from too much LabVIEW I'll include a screen capture of it...)
Well that's it. I barely noticed it on my blue/ background picture. It seems to be there on my XP machine but not my Win2K machine.

It's something from your video driver (If I recall correctly an NVIDIA).
LabVIEW creates somewhere off-screen a window with  a size of 0,0. The driver detects this and as som sort of anti-spam moves it on-screen.

  • Why the acquisition with DAQmx is different by using Labview 8.2 from Labview signal express?

    Hello,
I am using a PCi-6281 to acquire a voltage. When I am using Labview signal express with only the step to acquire I read the good signal with the exact voltage. But when I am using my VI, the y axis and the values recorded are wrong. Why this difference appears?
I insert a picture with both signal: at the top is the signal from my vi (wrong measurement) and at the bottom is the signal from labview signal express (correct).
The vi I am using is the example Cont Acqu&Graph Voltage-To file (binary).vi.
    Thank you for your answer!
    Sophie
    Sophie

I am using the binary file because it requires the minimum change in another VI. I have tried to change in scaled data but now my second VI has not enough memory to display all data.... What's wrong? Here is my second VI. Totest with data you need to insert a number in the "scaling factor" if not the dat are multiplied by zero...
    thanks for your help!

  • Sorensen SGI control using labview

    Hi,
I am attempting to control a sorensen sgi400/63 dc power supply using labview. I have the supply connected via rs232 and using windows hyper terminal i am able to issue a *idn? command and get a response back detailing model name / number etc. - This says to me that the comms link is working.
My troble comes when trying to use labview to do the control. I  have downloaded the labview driver for this power supply form ni.com - this gave me a .zip folder (called sornsg.zip) containing some .vis. I opened the self test vi. It seems when run in highlight execution mode that all is well writing to the supply, but reading from it throws the error -10738007339. Any ideas?
I have contacted sorensen but no reply as yet...
    Many thanks.
Attached is screen shot of the vi not working quite as i'd like.

    I still have the error.
    What error are you getting?
I'm not sure what you mean by changing the display mode to "\".
Right click on your "*IDN?" string constant and select the display mode - Normal, \, Hex or Password
Also in the "Visible Items" select "Display Style" to show the '\" symbol in the string constant.
Is there anyway to configure a termination character in labview?
Yes with the same property node that you are using to set the other com port settings.
But for the writes you do not need to if you include at the end of your *IDN? string. Now as for the read, it is good to set the termination character for the VISA reads and then set the bytes to read to some number larger than anything you expect.

    Hello,
Thanks for your reply.I will try to answer your questions.
I have checked the Device Mananger and I have seen that the device is detected by Windows  XP.  For another question the card shows up under both NI-DAQmx Devices and Traditional NI-DAQ (Legacy) Devices consistently in the Measurement & Automation Explorer.I use a way that I reset the driver for traditional NI-DAQ in MAX,and then i reset the device for NI-DAQmx driver in MAX and again i tried to run the test panel of DAQmx driver but again i saw a wrong signal or noise signal on the test panel i could not see the sinusoidal signal that i connected. i do get the test panels to run with the card using the DAQmx driver,  But could not run the DAQ diagnostic utility. The error was as i specified below.

  • How do I turn off background ni file activity when not using Labview? files such as nimxs.exe, nipalsm.exe, nipalsm.exe, nisvcloc.exe, nicitdl5.exe

How do I turn off background ni file activity when not using Labview? I use labview rarely, and I also use my computer for demanding multimedia applications, including multitrack digital audio recording. I need to reduce as much background activity as possible, and taking a look with task manager I see files such as nimxs.exe, nipalsm.exe, nipalsm.exe, nisvcloc.exe, and nicitdl5.exe running even when I haven't used Labview (8 I believe). These files run even after I right click the NI icon on the lower right and turn off the application. I would like the computer to boot up without these files, and for the necessary files to be activated only when I start the program.
Can this be done or do I have to remove labview from the system to improve performance?
    Thanks

Hello, those processes are part of running NI services that start when Windows boots.  These processes serve varied purposes and stopping them can have undefined and unknown consiquences for your NI products.  These products run at "normal" priority meaning that they should be preempted by any process running at a higher priority which I would expect your other application to be doing given their time sensitivity.  That being said, in Windows XP (I can't speak for other OSes), you can lower their priorities even greater through task manager (right click the process»set priority) to further remove them from contention for resources.  If you want to prevent them from running you can set the service startup type to "manual" in Control Panel»Administrative Tools»Services.  Right click the process go to Properties and Under the General tab choose Startup Type»Manual.  This will start up the processes only when something directly starts it up.  LabVIEW will start these processes up as it attempts to use them.  When you shut down LabVIEW you will need to manually shut down these processes through task manager.  Again, doing this can cause problems with your NI products on your system and it is not advised.

  • Process Failure when communicating over MODBUS using LabVIEW 2011 and DSC

I'm currently trying to read from a PLC's holding registers using MODBUS/TCP. I've confirmed that the PLC is updating the values and responding to MODBUS communication correctly using a third party program called Modbus Poll. However, when I try to poll the PLC using LabVIEW's shared variable engine, I am unable to read any values from the same addresses that I'm viewing with Modbus Poll.
My setup simply consists of a PC connected directly to the PLC over Ethernet, with no router in between. I am using LabVIEW 2011 SP1 with the DSC module.
I opened the NI Distributed Systems Manager to view the status of all shared variables in the Modbus library that I created and I've noticed that the CommFail bit is permanently set to "true". All other variables with a "read" access mode report "Process Failure". I've tried restarting the process as well as stopping and starting the local variable engine with no success. I've also restarted my computer several times to see if any services were failing, but this does not seem to have fixed the problem.
I finally resorted to monitoring communications over the network card that I have the PLC plugged into via Ethernet using Wireshark and I've found that while Modbus Poll is communicating with the PLC, many MODBUS and TCP packets are sent and received. However, when solely using LabVIEW or the NI DSM to communicate with the PLC, there does not appear to be any communication over the network card.
Something that may be worth noting is that I was able to communicate with the PLC and read values from it with the DSM on just one occasion, when I first figured out which addresses I should be reading from. It all stopped working shortly thereafter. Prior to this, "CommFail" was not usually set to "true" with my current configuration. Thinking that it was my firewall, I have since turned my firewall off, but this seems to have had no effect on the problem either.
Any help on this matter would be appreciated.

Just a thought but I think the  register addresses used by LabVIEW are one off of the actual register #.  I was using a CRIO as a modbus IO Server and had to shift the register addresses by 1 to get things to work correctly (can;t recall if it was +1 or -1).  This is documented somewhere on ni.com but can;t seem to find it now.  But here is another  link that may help:

  • Advantages of using labview in embedded application when compared to c ?

    Hello all,
I am looking to develop embedded application with help of labview programming
    Started with Lm3s8962 evaluation board.
So i would like to know
1 Advantages of using labview in embedded application when compared to c ?
2 Can we deploy the code in any kind of  controller by writting drivers for it ?

hello, the LM3S8962 microcontroller is a good sispositivos for developing applications of medium complexity, according to your questions:
    1. if you work applications with embedded systems will save labview time in prototyping, we know that if you work with a company specific microcontroller, you must learn the language with which you are working Asm, Basic, C, then if you change hardware again start adapting your code in the libraries of the new compiler. Labview does not happen.
    2. Labview only works with some microcontroller manufacturers and specific models.

I need to update specific records(of variable lengths) in a file. I can get the correct record but when I update it(add or change info), it overwrites part of the record following it. I am using labview 6.0. I need to be able to insert information into the middle of a file without disturbing the data before and after

It's hard to give more specifics without more detail, but in general you're going to need to read in the entire file, split it into three pieces (everything before the record of interest, the record itself, and everything after the record of interest), modify the record, reassemble the three pieces in proper order, and write the whole thing back to the file.Of course if the file is very large you might not want to actually implement it this way, but conceptually at least, this is what you are looking at.If this file some sort of proprietary format?Mike...PS: this type of issue is why I really like databases...

  • Strange behavior when using Labview to collect data from Tektronix tds8200 oscilloscope

I have hit a wall in trying to figure this one out. The problem I am having is that my program does not start the oscilloscope when it should.
I am using a Tektronix TDS8200 oscilloscope. My goal is to collect waveform data from the oscilloscope using Labview. My program first initializes and configures the oscilloscope; this part of the program runs fine.
The second part of the program begins the data aquisition using the  'tktds8k Start or Stop Aquisitions.vi' function, which is equivalent to pressing the Run button on the scope. The 'tktds8k Get Waveform.vi' function is then used and should ideally return the data, which I have connected to a waveform graph for visualization.
When I run my program, the first part executes without issue, but as soon as the program gets to the Get Waveform function, the Run button on the scope, which is green when running, turns off; the program then times out, and no data is collected.
Here's where it gets weird. I went through some debugging to try and figure this out, and I put breakpoints on both the Start and Get Waveform functions so that I could step through the later part of the program. The program continues through the Start function, and the Run button on the scope is green. The breakpoint for the Get Waveform function is reached, and when I press continue, the Run button turns off and then turns back on almost immediately; the data is collected, the waveform graph is displayed, and the program exits without an error.
I thought timing might be the issue, so I made the program wait as long as 5 seconds between the Start and Get Waveform functions, and that did not work. I also tried moving the Start function to before the configuration functions, and removing the Start function altogether; neither method worked.
Are there any thoughts on why the program works when I have the breakpoints enabled and doesn't when the breakpoints are disabled? I am sure that there is an easy fix, but I haven't been able to find a solution.
I have attached a pdf containg information on the Oscilloscope functions (tktds8k.pdf), and I have also attached my program.

Thank you for the swift replies.
After Bill asked about the ID Query, I decided to try a few things that I had already gone over just to double check. I was suspspicious that timing was the source of the error. Using a timed while loop, I set the wait time to 10 seconds and got results. As it turns out, 5 seconds is not long enough, but 8 seconds is a sufficient wait time for the program to work. With the problem solved, I am still mystified as to why waiting 8 seconds is required.
I think that the oscilloscope must be given sufficient time to display the signal on-screen before the Start Aquistion or Get Waveform functions are used. With this logic in mind, the breakpoints were acting as a sort of wait, allowing the signal to be displayed before continuing through the program.
In response to Jeff, I am indeed using an external direct trigger. The hardware is sound, but apparently, my coding could use some work.
I have attached the modified code. I am certain that there is a more elegant solution to the timing than simply slapping a timed while loop on the code. Any suggestions?

When I close my program built using LabVIEW application builder I receive an application error,"The instruction at "0x77fcb1ad" referenced memory at "0x023a0010". The memory could not be "read". Click OK to terminate the program"
I have no idea why this is happening.

This is most likely due to a reference or similar left open. You will experience this if you leave an image undisposed in IMAQ as well.

  • Labview crashes when trying to use bar graph

Hi all; I am trying to make a 3D Bar or 3D Pie chart but LabVIEW crashes and shut down. When I try to pick up 3D Bar graph from controls to the front panel, LabVIEW shuts down without giving any error. I was using LabVIEW 2011 and now using LabVIEW 2012 evaluation version but the problem is same on both versions. I am using windows XP.
    Any suggestions?

There has been reports about crashes like this in the past. There is already a CAR filed on this with LV 2009 which seems still to be "unaddressed". It is listed in e.g. the LV 2010 known issues.
Since the source of the crash is a result of an incompatibility between OS, graphic driver (device) and OpenGL, i doubt that there is much NI as company can do about it.
So i ask you to follow the suggested updates/test and see if the crash persists.

You probably won't be able to use a Malaysian sim card in your phone.  If you purchased the phone from 3, then it is probably carrier locked to 3 and it won't work with any other sim card.
Nobody here can do anything to help you.  You need to contact 3, so you need to ring them or go back to the store where you purchased the phone.  Not a lot you can do other than activate with the original 3 sim card in situ so that the phone will work.
You can try activating the phone with the 3 sim card and then try swapping them, but I suspect that the phone is carrier locked to 3 and you need to contact them for help.  Noone else can do anything really except them.
