When I open up a new tab, why can't I type in the address bar?

I downloaded Firefox 4.0 recently and every time I open a new tab, I am not able to type in the address bar. I have to open up multiple pages in my task bar rather than having them tabbed in one browser. This was happening to me when I was using the beta version also.

I'm hoping that that's not the case. My only add-ons are Adobe Acrobat 9.0.0332, Java Deployment Toolkit 6.0.22.4, Java Platform SE 6 U22, and Shockwave Flash 100.2.153.1. Which is stuff that I need in order to do most things on the net.

• Why can't I type in the address bar?

I can click on the address/location bar and highlight it but i can not type anything in. every page i want to go to i have to type into my little Google search bar and then select it from a list.

You may have visited a website that has disabled the location bar.<br />
Try to open a new window to see if that gives you a working location bar.<br />
If that works then close the not working window and close and restart Firefox to see if that stays.<br />

• When I open up a new tab, how do I get rid of the default 'Bing' tab?

When I click on the + sign for a new tab, the Bing search engine comes up. How can I modify the tab content? I have tried 'Tools' and 'Tabs' option, but nothing works for me under there. My husband's Mozilla tabs comes up with multiple pages he has browsed in the past. I want this.... Thanks.

hello,
Lets try to change it to the way you want. follow the following steps:
Step 1: enter about:config on the address bar. Hit Enter.
https://support.cdn.mozilla.net/media/uploads/images/2014-12-31-20-40-43-72e926.png
Step 2: On the preferences window search for browser.newtab.url. You will see only one option for the result.
https://support.cdn.mozilla.net/media/uploads/images/2014-12-31-20-40-59-3aca0a.png
Step 3: Double click on it and enter the URL of the site that you prefer to open with every new tab page. For example, In the image it is set to Guiding Tech.
https://support.cdn.mozilla.net/media/uploads/images/2014-12-31-20-41-10-22b9de.png
To use the home page as new tab page set the values to about:home. For a blank new tab set it to about:blank..For making new tab perform as your husband's browser enter about:newtab in the URL of step 3.
Hope it helps.

• Get "new tab" no matter what I type into the address

Connections says I'm connected. I have reset Firefox. I have reset modem. I have reset network connection. I have compared all the internet and Firefox settings on my desktop to the ones on my laptop (the laptop works, the desktop doesn't). When I open Firefox it opens a new tab. I hit the "home" icon which I have set to www.my.yahoo.com. It says connecting but always comes back with "New Tab" and nothing in the body of the tab. I have tried many of my bookmarks. Same result.... "New Tab" with nothing in the window. Troubleshooting doesn't find anything wrong and, of course, wants me to use the internet to get more answers which I can't do. Internet Explorer doesn't work either.

A few other things to check:
(1) In case the problem is connection settings, try making this change in Firefox:
"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced > Network mini-tab > "Settings" button
Change to "No proxy" and see whether that makes any difference.
(2) In case it's a firewall issue, please see: Configure firewalls so that Firefox can access the Internet.
(3) In case it's a malware problem, you could download some of the tools listed in our support article onto a USB flash drive using your laptop: Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware.

• When I opened up a new tab, I used to get the Speed Dial page. I like that. However, since I updated my AVG anti-virus program, now when I open a new tab, I get the AVG search page. Can I change it back so that I get the Speed Dial?

I had that too. On the bottom right of the AVG search page is a link which leads you to where you can switch it off. This restores normal Speed Dial operation.
This hijacking has really cheesed me off. I've just downloaded Avast and am going to put it on in place of AVG.

• When I open up a new tab, I get an "AVG" search result. I already did the about:config reset but it still doesn't work. How can I get a blank tab opened?

When I open a new tab, this always comes up:
http://isearch.avg.com/tab?cid={7d7746b8-fb39-4619-86fd-792cbc268005}&mid=72dc207d310ff3c58bd4dbeaeddede3a-fe6a71ecae4eb764a90a5203c991f01a6245f52e&ds=AVG&v=13.2.0.5&lang=es-es&pr=fr&d=2012-06-02%2009%3A32%3A49&sap=nt
I already did the about:config reset and it doesn't make the new tab blank or go to a specific URL address that I type in. What can I do to get a blank new tab? Thanks.

I would just like to add to this thread. I have tried everything and every way listed here and found my own solution, for those of you who were having the same issue as me.
1. Type "about:config" in your search bar
2. Click "I'll be careful, i promise"
3. Type "newtab" in the search bar
4. Find "avg.userPreferences.newtabDisabledByUser"
5. Set value to true by either doube clicking or right click > toggle
This immediately deactivated the AVG new tab feature and reset my browser to it's default settings.
Hope this helps!

• Firefox bug when clicking "open link in new tab" or mouse wheel

I am starting to get this bug for a last few days.
When I am trying to click "Open link in new tab" or, as usual using mouse wheel click, inside a Firefox window I got this for a couple of seconds before page shows up.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-tbYPFx7jBn4/VIBxWfNBp8I/AAAAAAAABPM/yxArZ9Zbw88/s1000/bug.jpg
As you can see it's a mix of previous pages I was viewing for a last few days....
All those pages was not open at the this moment, it's just like a flash back :O)
Any idea what may cause it?

hello Bubunya, maybe that's an issue with hardware acceleration - please try updating your graphics driver, or in case this doesn't solve the issue or there is no new version available at the moment, disable hardware acceleration in the firefox menu ≡ > options > advanced > general (that setting will take a restart of the browser to take effect).

• Is it possible to have the Navigation Toolbar (or at least the pop-up Location Bar) show automatically when I open a (blank) new tab and be automatically hidden once I select an address/search?

I'm obviously aware of the possibility to show/hide the Navitation Toolbar manually, but I'd like to have it done automatically to get the best of screen space and navigation ease.

Thanks cor-el! I had tried that out, but was turned off by the different workflow (can't click Tab to select the address suggestions) and assumed by the look that I couldn't use my Smart Keywords for searches.
In fact, the workflow isn't that much bulkier and the Location Bar is fully functional:
* for a search: Ctrl+L, (Smart Keyword +) [search terms], Enter
* for a suggested address: Ctrl+L, Down, Enter, Enter
Still, it would be nice in future versions if:
# the Location Bar could automatically open when opening a (blank) new tab (just as the cursor automatically goes to the Location Bar when a new tab is opened with the Navigation Toolbar showing) to avoid the Ctrl+L step of the workflow
# the Tab, Enter workflow could be enabled for selecting address suggestions in the pop-up Location Bar
Or (most simply in my mind):
if the Navigation Toolbar could be set to show when a (blank) new tab is opened and disappear once an address/search is selected.

• I want all click-on links to open in a new tab. Can I do this? Didn't find it in options.

When I click on a link, I want it to automatically open in a new tab, without having to right-click and select it. Is this possible? I did not see an option for it.

You can middle-click the Go button on the location/address bar to open the URL in a new tab and press Alt+Enter.
You can search the Add-ons website to see if there is an extension that includes this feature.

• How do I have new tabs be a blank page with curser in address bar.

When I create a new tab it opens on yahoo's search page. I have to mouse over and click in the address bar to type an address. Or I can hit tab 10 or so times. I used to just hit control+t and I could start typing the URL.
How do I change it so a new tab is ready to go, that is, all I have to do is start typing the URL, bookmark name etc?

A new tab should open with a blank page by default.<br />
If that isn't happening then you have an extension that is casing it.
Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
* Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
See Troubleshooting extensions and themes and Troubleshooting plugins
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
* Use "Disable all add-ons" on the Safe mode start window to disable all extensions.
* Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

• Why are URLs not saved in the address bar immediately upon typing?

This might be a tricky one to explain so please bear with me.
Sometimes, when I click on a link or type an address, the page will fail to load for any number of reasons. However, when this happens, sometimes Firefox doesn't save the URL of the page I attempted to visit in its address bar. Instead, the address bar is either blank or shows "about:blank". This means that hitting the Refresh button does nothing (since Firefox thinks there is no URL to refresh!).
Another symptom of this problem is if you open a link in a new tab (or window), then immediately attempt to bookmark the page while it is still loading. Say, for example, a page is taking a bit too long to load and you decide to bookmark it for later viewing. It turns out that what you're actually bookmarking is - again - the URL "about:blank".
This is incredibly frustrating behaviour. My expectation as a user is that *the moment you click or type a URL, that URL should be concretely cemented into the address bar*, and even if the page fails to load, takes a long time, or other problems occur, the refresh button should always work, the bookmark function should always work, and the window or tab should *always* have a concrete "identity" of that URL you clicked or typed.
Does this make sense?

I'm using Firefox 22 on Windows 7 64-bit, by the way.
You can very easily replicate this "bug" (or "feature"... ahem) by shift-clicking any hyperlink which opens up a new Firefox window. Immediately hit the "stop" button to stop the page from loading.
If you're fast enough, the address bar will be completely empty and you can't "refresh" or try again or anything.
In my opinion, the URL should be placed into the address bar the very moment that new window opens. I'd appreciate an explanation of why this is not already the case and if it will or will not be the case in the future.

• Why in address bar in not the url but "go to the web site"? How can I see url in the address bar?

Why in the address bar is not URL but "go to the web site"? How can I see the URL in the address bar?

those are some addons that other users have reported to cause the same problem in the past: Gom player, Ask Toolbar, DivX (Plus) Web Player, RealPlayer Browser Record Plugin...
in case you have one of them present, try to disable/remove it - otherwise you could disable all your extensions & reenable them one by one (a restart of the browser might be necessary after each step) until you find the culprit.

• Firefox 4 seems to hang when I try to type in the address bar...

I have Windows 7, Firefox 4.0, and am trying F-Secure Internet security 2011 trial. My issue is when I am browsing, quite often when I am typing in the address bar or search bar nothing happens. I cannot highlight the text or anything. I have figured I have to wait about 10 seconds for it to clear. Or I can close the browser and reopen and it works.
This is annoying. Is this a Firefox issue or a F-Secure issue? I installed both 4.0 and the F-Secure trail at the same time.

Do a malware check with a few malware scan programs.
You need to use all programs because each detects different malware.
