When I save a file Lion puts it in the last place I saved a file to, why?

Hi there,
This is really bugging me now. If I am using third party software such as Sketchup and I open an existing file then save it Lion seems to save that file to the location of the last file I saved, not the location of the file I just opened in order to edit it. This can be miles away if I was working on invoices yesterday and then open a sketchup file today. I then spend 10 mins trying to find it and move it back to where it was in the first place.
How can I stop this from happening please......

Also check the Application your working in Prefences. Just referencing Creative Suite, for example, most of the apps allow you to set that very preference under a certain aspect.
Here's an option in Photoshop, for example:
And here's a similar option in InDesign, I realize it's about relinking but the premise is the same.
So just give your apps a look, see what they can do to help you.

I am using a Mac and when I save my files as a jpeg, the files become much smaller, and consequently darker and blurrier. What can I do to fix this? I have tried to figure out how to chat with someone at Adobe, but they certainly don't make it easy to do. At the moment, this program is useless to me. Very depressing....

Hello,
I would like to inform you that not all the browsers and online PDF readers support copying text from a PDF. If you have opened the PDF online, please download PDF file to your computer and then open the file in Adobe Reader.
Please share a screenshot if the issue still persists.

Created PDF form in Acrobat XI Pro, but HELP fields disappear when I save FCDT file to PDF. Please help. Thanks!

I am not aware of a field type "Help" within a PDF form. I do not see it as a form field that can be added in the form edit mode.
Forms Central forms do not support all the features of Acrobat forms.
Are you talking about the "Tool Tips" or a hidden field that only shows when one enters a field and is hidden upon exiting the field.

• When I am prompted to choose a folder to save downloaded files to, why does 7.0 start the download browser in a random folder rather than the last folder saved to?

When prompted to choose a destination folder for files that I am saving, I have found that 7.0 doesn't always open the file browser with the last folder I saved to. In previous versions, if I saved a jpg to a specific folder, it would open still directing me to that same folder the next time I was prompted. Now, if I am saving a string of images, there is no telling which folder the browser will be opened to when I am prompted. Very annoying to 1) have to figure out where I am in my filing system and 2) have to work my way through god knows how many folders to get back to where I saved the previous file ten seconds earlier. If this is some kind of smart feature that's making suggestions based on file source history or downloading patterns or whatever, can I turn it off? Here's hoping that you can help, because I really want this to be an easy fix rather than a bad version of your otherwise flawless program or worse yet a deteriorating hard drive.

Firefox 11+ versions have support via browser.download.lastDir.savePerSite pref to disable to disable the feature to remember the download directory based upon the URL.
The browser.download.lastDir.savePerSite pref doesn't exist by default (it is hidden).
Create a new Boolean pref with the name browser.download.lastDir.savePerSite and set the value to false.
You may have the clear the "Site Preferences" via Clear Recent History to remove already stored data.

When I start Safari 5.1 in Lion, it always opens the last page opened. Is there a way to start on the homepage?

That sounds great, but on my system, that box is not at the bottom of my Pref/General page, but is when I log out and put it to sleep. What is really annoying is that I have to do this every time, instead of unchecking it and it being permanent. Yes, I have Safari 5.1 and Lion. I would like to permanently disable this as I too, think it is absurd and not a great idea when banking, paying bills, etc.

Dealing With The Resume Feature of Lion
Managing Mac OS X Lion's application resume feature.
If you shutdown your computer you should get a dialog asking if you want applications to resume on the next startup. Simply uncheck the box to prevent that from occurring. Open General preferences and uncheck the option to Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps. You can also install a third-party utility to control resume features on individual applications: RestoreMeNot or Application State Cleaner.
It is possible to completely stop the Resume feature although I'm unconvinced that it is that annoying. Nevertheless see the following:
If you have not yet done so you must first make your /Home/Library/ folder visible. Open the Terminal application in the Utilities folder. At the prompt paste the following command line:
chflags nohidden ~/Library
Press RETURN. Quit the Terminal application.
In the Finder navigate to the /Home/Library/Saved Application State/ folder. Delete the contents of the folder. Back up to the /Home/Library/ folder. Select the Saved Application State folder. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. In the Sharing and Permissions panel at the bottom click on the lock icon and authenticate. Set each of the listed entries to Read Only. Close the Get Info window.
Quit all open programs except the Finder (this is very important.) Next, navigate to the /Home/Library/Preferences/ByHost/ folder. Look for a .plist file with "com.apple.loginwindow." in the file name followed by some numbers in hexadecimal. Select the file. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window and in the Sharing and Permissions panel click on the lock icon and authenticate. Set each of the listed entries to Read Only. Close the Get Info window. If you also find a file with the same filename but with a last extension of ".lockfile," then you should delete it.
The above should eliminate the Resume feature system-wide. Note that any future system updates or upgrades will likely undo these changes. You will then need to repeat this procedure assuming there are no major changes in OS X related to it.

• How can I remember the last place I browsed? When I return to the main page it would be great if a marking of some kind would show the last place I browsed.

When I return to the main browsing page after checking a site it would be great if the last place I checked would highlight on the main browsing page or have an indicator of some sort to let me know.
When returning to the Browsing page it is difficult to remember which link I clicked on and have to guess or start over again so can someone let me know how to do this if it can be done?
Can't remember but I think that you can do this with Internet Explorer.
Thank you.

I am not sure exactly what you are trying to do but firefox calls favorites bookmarks, and has a variety of methods of making, sorting and displaying these, it also stores your 'history' and lets you see that or use it in the location bar search.
Have a look at some of the following
* [[Bookmarks]] <-- coloured text is a clickable link --
* [[Location bar autocomplete]]
*[[Browsing basics#w_retracing-your-steps]] <-- this is a long article it will scroll up and down once opened

• Can I prevent an less-used external HD from waking when I save a file?

I've got two external hard drives connected via Firewire to the my Intel iMac. these drives are used primarily to store videos and less often used files. Of course when not in use they spin down and go to sleep.
When I am in an application (let's say MS Word) and try to save a document to the iMac's internal drive, as soon I choose Save As, the Mac wakes up the two externals, so I've got to wait the five or ten seconds for them to spin up to speed and appear in allow the save dialogue to continue. Is there a way to not wake them up when saving unless I want to save TO them? I'm guessing not, because if they are asleep the don't appear on the left side of the save dialogue. but I'm curious to know if there is a preference I don't know about.

I'm having the same extremely annoying problem with my MBP, now that I've moved from 10.4.11 to 10.6.7. Tiger did not have this problem, as I could open an external drive in the Finder, and it would not wake up until I went to open deeper subdirectories. I can't do that in SL. In SL, everytime I go to save a file, the dialog box hangs until it wakes up the external drives. I did not have this problem with 10.2 or 10.4.
"I'm guessing not, because if they are asleep the don't appear on the left side of the save dialogue. but I'm curious to know if there is a preference I don't know about."
On my system, the sleeping external drives seem to appear immediately, before they are woken up. The system stops to wake the drives without being selected. Their icons remain in the Finder. So it's not as though the system can't remember what drives are mounted.
I've googled, and looked through System Preferences and have not found an answer.
Not putting the drives to sleep or unmounting the drive are not solutions. That's like telling someone with a problem with QuickTime to just stop using QuickTime. While I've seen many similar questions about 10.5 and 10.6 waking up external drives unnecessarily, I haven't seen any answers. What we need is a way to let external drives sleep without waking them up when they are not requested.

• I get this error message when I save some files "sty is null"

When I try to save some files I get an error message that says Unable to initialize the UI, sty is null. It happens mostly when saving files to an Aaptorefromtdotnet e commerce web site. If I click OK either it file saves or I get a second error message, exactly like above only with the added Prevent this page from creating additional settings. A check box is beside it. If I click in the check box and then OK, the file saves, but when using other options on the website, Firefox crashes.
Please let me know what this is and how do I eliminate it?
I am running an i Mac with Yosemite and a newly downloaded Firefox.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
