When I try to drag and drop my photos in iPhoto to an external drive (for backup or to transfer them to my other Mac) only some will transfer. If I copy and paste, the same thing happens. The photos are all taken with the same camera, but some will not transfer. It tells me right away - for example, I'll "grab" 3500 photos to drag and move, and the red ball will tell me it's moving 3256 or something. If I use the copy function instead - copy 3500 photos, it will show in Finder that I can paste 3256 or whatever. This happens on my iMac as well as my MacBook Pro. It started recently and I've never had this before. Any thoughts? Thank you!
Are you able to use the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu to export the photos into a folder on the EHD?

Album overview
A photo album in iPhoto is just like one you would create with printed photos: It’s a collection of photos you select from your library and arrange in the order you want.
You can create photo albums to:
Focus on a particular subject, such as your favorite nature photos
Group pictures that you want to send to a friend, post on a webpage, or burn to a CD or DVD
Gather a decade of anniversary photos
iPhoto has two kinds of photo albums:
Standard photo albums: You create these albums (B, shown below) by selecting particular photos. You can add new photos by dragging them to the album (or using the Add To button), and you can remove photos at any time. All adding and removing is done manually; iPhoto doesn’t update standard albums automatically as you import new photos.
Smart Albums: iPhoto creates these albums for you, based on criteria your specify. iPhoto then updates Smart Albums (A, shown above) for you as your library changes. For example, you could create a Smart Album containing:
Photos of specific people, such as your family members. As you import new photos, iPhoto uses Faces to detect your family members, and automatically adds new photos of them to the Smart Album (after you’ve confirmed the matches in Faces).
All the photos of your daughter taken on school field trips in third grade. Use Faces (to name your daughter) and keywords (to mark certain photos or events as “field trips”) to help specify the photos you want iPhoto to place in that Smart Album.
Only photos taken with a specific camera, or photos matching other Exchangeable Image File (EXIF) information.
You can make as many albums as you like, and you can include the same photo in several albums without making multiple copies of it.
After you create an album, such as “Australia Adventures,” it appears in your Source list below Albums.
In full-screen view, the album appears as a stack of photos below Albums.
To further organize your library, you can group several albums (along with slideshows and projects) into a folder. For example, you could create a folder containing several years of birthday albums or a collection of albums with photos of your camping trips.
To create a folder, see “Create a folder in the Source list and move items into it” in “Customize the Source list”.
Folders appear only in the Source list, not in full-screen view.
Note: A photo album is different from a photo book, which is a collection of photos you create to get professionally printed and bound. See this topic: Photo book overview.

I can't remove icons from the dock, they don't move at all when I try to drag and drop them off the dock any help out there?
Restart and see if that solves your issue.

I just got an iphone 5c and downloaded ringtone maker and made a 30 second 4r ringtone and when I try to drag and drop it in the tones folder of itunes nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?
If the file is a correctly formatted AAC file with the .m4r file extension and less than 40 seconds long, then iTunes should put it into the Tones section of the library and move it into the Tones folder inside your media folder.
I've just checked the current version of iTunes behaves as I've desribed, which it does for me at least.
You may need to have some tones in your library for the tones tab to display when the device is connected.

Hi,
I am getting a "Internal error occurred" message when I try to drag and drop common library items on to my canvas.
I have noticed that there are a number of these error messages and tried one solution of renaming a couple of files, I tried this and no joy.
Has any one go a solution for this before I purchase Fireworks please?

Dave GI can no longer get Firework CS6 to run - The program loads but without any toolbars/properties etc. It just has an 'AN INTERNAL ERROR OCCURRED' message that cannot be dismissed. The only way to close the program is via Task Manager (this is on a Window 8 PC). I have uninstalled the program, rebooted the PC and re-installed (several times) but it has not resolved the problem.
Fireworks is part of my Creative Cloud subscription and when reporting this via the live chat I was given the telephone number for Seagate Drives ??
Anybody got a solution?
Or, does anybody know how to open native Fireworks CS6 png files in Photoshop *but* with all the Fireworks layers preserved.

Cannot drag and drop CERTAIN photos from iPhoto 9.5.1
I cannot drag and drop certain photos to the desktop (Mac OS X 10.9.3) from iPhoto 9.5.1
When I encounter this problem the pointer has a circle with a slash as I drag the photo to the desktop and the file will not copy over. I'd say 25% of my photos suffer from this problem.
Some things of note:
- photos that are affected have been taken by variety of devices: iPhone, DSLR camera, or scanned in from film (no device is specific to this problem)
- a photo that cannot be copied is located in the same subfolder as one that can be copied so it's not folder specific
- I have trashed the iPhoto prefs files as well as the cache file in Mac OS X 10.9.3
- I have repaired permissions and the database as well as rebuilt the database in iPhoto all to no avail
Help!Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

When I try to drag and drop song into my ipod I get a black circle with a diagonal line through it?
Im trying to drag and drop songs from a new playlist that I have created but a black circle with a line through it appears meaning it wont allow me to put this song onto my ipod. I cant drag and drop any songs! ITUNES IS A NIGHTMARE TO WORK WITH AND IS NO WAY USER FRIENDLY - I HATE IT!!!!
It sounds like you are trying to manually manage the iPod's contents. If that's the case, make sure the Manually manage music and videos option is enabled from under your iPod's Summary tab. See this article for more information.

Good Afternoon All,
I'd be grateful for any help with the following problem.
After importing about 30 photos from my camera into iPhoto '09 (version 8.1.2), I selected the first group of 10 and dragged and dropped them into an existing album in my iPhoto library. I repeated this process with another group of photos , dropping them into a different existing album. Again, I repeated this process with the last remaining photos from the original imported group of 30.
This is exactly the same process I have used successfully on many previous occasions when adding to my iPhoto library of 6000+ photos.
However when I later opened each of the 3 existing albums to check on the 30 new photos none of these new photos were visible. Instead each of the three albums now contained between 5 and 15 duplicates of old photos from different and unrelated albums in addition to their normal content. These duplicates were not present before I imported the 30 new photos. I then opened every Album in my entire library of 6000+ photos without finding any sign of the 30 new photos. These 30 photos have also disappeared from "Last Import" which now shows a blank page with 0 imports.
I still have the 30 new photos saved on my camera and could import them again. My concern is that with my very limited diagnostic skills re. my iMac OS X (10.6.8) I may aggravate the problem

Thank you for your suggestion. When I held the Option Key and opened iPhoto the resulting menu showed 2 libraries , "iPhoto Library" and "iPhoto Library (default )".
I then recalled that 12 months ago I had created this duplicate library when attempting to recover some lost photos. On opening each of these two libraries in turn, I notice that they are not identical. Rather than create another new library, I imported some new photos into "iPhoto Library " and was then able to drag and drop successfully into this library. When I tried to do the same with "iPhoto Library (default )" all the problems originally described re-occured.
Having found the problem is in the Default library I would now like to move some photos from it into "iPhoto Library" and then remove the Default Library.
Could you recommend how best to do this or is it not a good idea?

I think I know what's happening as I'm having the same problem.
Under previous iPhotos you could look at the main viewer and drag a photo or multiple photos from there to an already created album.
Now, it only appears that you can drag an entire event from the events window to an album, even when you click on an event to open it, you can't drag individual photos from an event to an album.
So how do we add individual photos to an album??

My husband was using the laptop and I'm afraid he may have deleted the original pictures on the hard drive. I can see the thumbnails of all of my pictures but I can't do anything with them. I also have the photos in Photoshop Elements and only see a ? on the thumbnail. When I try to reconnect it says it can't find the file.
I am new to using a Mac as well as any of the software so I'm at a loss as to what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!YOu're not looking in the right palce. That's inside the iPhoto Application.
You need to look inside the iPhoto Library
As I sid above:
Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there

Drag and Drop not working in iPhoto
I have a brand new MacBook Pro running Lion, and recently when I try to drag and drop in iPhoto, it stops working. I want to drag photos from iPhoto to a folder on my desktop in order to upload those pictures online. I have never had a problem with drag and drop in Snow Leopard, but suddenly Lion does not want to let me do it.
I checked around and found out about repair permissions, which I did, then I restarted the computer. Drag and Drop worked for a few minutes, then all the sudden it wouldn't let me again. I was in the same album, trying to drag and drop the same group of pictures, and nothing had changed when it just stopped working again. I really don't want to have to restart the computer EVERY time it wont let me do this. Does anyone have any other advice? Command copy/paste works for now, but drag and drop is just easier so I'd like to get the issue resolved! Oh, and my software is completely up to date as well.Does anybody have any ideas?
I've updated to the new version of iTunes since I originally posted this,
but the drag and drop feature is still not working. This is making it
impossible for me to update anything on my iPod.

Working on an IMac - with IPhoto v.9.6
This is my first experience with IPhoto... trying to move files from a PC over to a Mac.
I don't have a ton of photos but I created about 6 albums - standard albums - and dragged and dropped individual photos into each of the albums. I named each of the albums as well so I would know what was in each. After i was finished, I created a folder called 2014 and moved each of the albums into that folder. Before moving ANY of the albums, I opened each of them up to make sure that all the photos I wanted in each were indeed there - and since there were some errors on my part, I deleted any duplicates first. SO, I KNOW the photos were actually in each of the albums BEFORE i moved them into the 2014 folder.
My intention was to then delete the photo files in my document file but once I got there I thought I would go back and double check the IPhoto file just to make sure... and the pictures were NOT in the albums where I had placed them... is there a need to save this before you move on and if so, to where and how? I was under the impression that once files were moved to albums, they remain there.
The photos are still in the photo library but unsorted now again... I cannot even open the 2014 folder at this point.
Thanks for any help!!Was back on IPhoto this morning. The folder did not open at all so I deleted it. Beside Albums, nothing showed at all. It was like I had done no work at all except to import my photo folder. Nothing was in my trash bin either.
I started again and created one album at a time. I dragged and dropped photos into the album and exited out of IPhoto, opened up other programs and then returned to IPhoto to see if the album was still there and it was this time. I created a second album and did the same thing. This time, for some reason, the albums seem to be staying in place. I am not doing anything differently than last time. After creating three albums, I created a folder called 2014 and dragged and dropped the three albums into the folder and exited IPhoto. They were still there when I returned - YEAH! It seems to be working - for now! I am keeping my fingers crossed that my photos are not going to disappear but I am not going to delete my photo folder from my files just in case!
Thanks for the suggestions but this may just have been a funny glitch... not sure what happened. I didn't change anything or do anything differently this time except that I am doing it one album at a time and exiting the program between creating each of them and coming back to check... very strange. -
Since installing Yosemite and Photos I can now no longer drag and drop a photo in an email, as I have always done. I repaired permission and restarted a number of times. still not working... Help?! Thanks, Michael

I can no longer "drag and drop" selected photos from iPhoto11 onto a desktop album. Before upgrading I could select as many as 200 photos and drag them onto a desktop album. No longer.There are two kinds of metadata involved when you consider jpeg or other image file.
One is the file data. This is what the Finder shows. This tells you nothing about the contents of the file, just the File itself.
The problem with File metadata is that it can easily change as the file is moved from place to place or exported, e-mailed, uploaded etc.
Photographs have also got both Exif and IPTC metadata. The date and time that your camera snapped the Photograph is recorded in the Exif metadata. Regardless if what the file date says, this is the actual time recorded by the camera.
Photo applications like iPhoto, Aperture, Lightroom, Picasa, Photoshop etc get their date and time from the Exif metadata.
When you export from iPhoto to the Finder new file is created containing your Photo (and its Exif). The File date is - quite accurately - reported as the date of Export. However, the Photo Date doesn't change.
The problem is that the Finder doesn't work with Exif.
So, your photo has the correct date, and so does the file, but they are different things. To sort on the Photo date you'll need to use a photo app.
