When I try to open Firefox, it says it is running in the Task manager, but will not open until the memory has reached about 100,000k. Also, it keeps NOT responding all the time, and freezes up.

I have done everything on the support page. I am running Windows Vista, and I am running Firefox 4.01. I have even tried running in safe mode. I have updated my plugins, and then disabled plugins and extensions.

Hello Pohaku66, any luck if you [https://support.mozilla.org/kb/firefox-already-running-not-responding#w_remove-the-profile-lock-file remove the profile lock file] ?

  • Firefox 4.0 will not open at all. It shows that the process is running in the task manager but will not open the window even after closing the prcess and restarting.

I have had firefox since an earlier 2. version and have been able to upgrade as normal. After the installation is done it will not open at all. I have restarted and even uninstalled all previous version .exe and still nothing. I am using windows 7 OS. I am still running 3.6.8 and would love to see the new one running on my laptop.

I installed Adobe dlm add-on and now Firefox will not open. I see the process starting in Task Manager but no window opens. Unistalled Firefox then re-installed but still no luck. HELP ME! I do not want to use IE! I presume it has something to do with Adobe DLM as ever since then it is not working.

I had this problem for a couple weeks as well and it was extremely frustrating considering we use firefox for all our company tasks. Here is the solution:
First of all if you have no bookmarks you want to save, then go directly to step 7. If you want to save your bookmarks first, then follow these steps.
    1. Shut down the computer
    2. Reboot and open firefox
    3. Go to Task Manager, right click firefox.exe, and click END PROCESS TREE
    4. WAIT 30 SECONDS! Then Double-click the shortcut to try and open firefox again
5.Repeat steps 3 and 4 until firefox finally opens (trust me, eventually it will)
    6. Once it finally opens, backup your bookmarks,
    7. Download a copy of firefox from there website
    8. Uninstall from programs menu and make sure to check the box REMOVE ALL COMPONENTS
    9. install the new copy and BOOM! it works
If it doesn't work, you're an idiot. If you don't want to reinstall firefox, then you're out of luck. Good Luck!

A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox without informing you about that, maybe after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox.

  • Firefox will not open, it is not running in the task manager, but when I click on the icon, it will not open a firefox screen.

I have tried uninstalling the program, so that i could re-install it, but during the uninstall it says i have to close the currently open firefox page, But there is no page opne. There is no page in the lower left corer of my screen, and when i opne task manger, it does not say that firefox is running. I have tried updateing firefox on the website, but during the update it says the same thing, that firefox is running, and i need to close it. I can not get firefox to opne, and i hate using internet explorer, PLEASE HELP!!

In the Task Manager, make sure to check both the Applications tab and the Processes tab. On the Processes tab, Firefox may have two different components running: firefox.exe and plugin-container.exe. Well, in 3.5.11, it would be only the first one.

  • Firefox shows in task manager, but won't open

Firefox doesn't open, though it opens once in a while. It shows in task manager and takes up 50% CPU usage, and ending process and retrying doesn't work. Profile manager doesn't open either. There's no error message, and have restarted laptop (Windows XP) many times, but no results.
    Help would be appreciated!

Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    #*'''Windows:'''
    #**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    #**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*'''Mac:''' Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*'''Linux:''' If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Installing Firefox on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop Firefox download page], simply remove the folder ''firefox'' in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.

  • FireFox showing 126,000+ K in the Task manager, but doesn't appear

Hello, today I started FF. After about three minutes, it didn't appear so I double clicked its icon again. It still didn't show.
I then opened the Task manager, and FF was 126,000+ K. I had to use another browser. I attended a webinar online, and as soon as the webinar ended, FF worked just fine. What could have caused what I experienced? Thanks for any help you can offer.

  • I tried to backup my bookmarks to move them to new computer, but it didn't work. I deleted the moved folder and now when I try to opn Firefox it says i must first close the existing firefox process or restart the system.

I removed and reinstalled Mozilla and I still get this message. I am assuming that when I deleted the folder that had the bookmarks, something got screwed up in the program. I don't understand why completely deleting the program, downloading it again, and reinstalling it, does not resolve the problem? Also , I want to know how to do this properly, so that I can have my Favorites on the new computer.

Sounds like a "hang at exit" problem. There are several possible causes for that error. See:
    * How to stop the running Firefox process
** In Task Manager, does firefox.exe show in the '''<u>Processes</u>''' tab?
    ** See: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Kill_application
    * What may cause Firefox to hang at exit
** http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Firefox+hangs (see "Hang at exit" section)
    ** https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Firefox+is+already+running+but+is+not+responding
    * You may need to try Firefox Safe Mode
** You may need to use '''Safe Mode''' to locate the problem: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode
**Firefox Safe Mode is a diagnostic mode that disables Extensions and some other features of Firefox. If you are using a theme, switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes '''<u>before</u>''' starting Safe Mode. When entering Safe Mode, do not check any items on the entry window, just click "Continue in Safe Mode". Test to see if the problem you are experiencing is corrected.
** If the problem does not occur in Safe-mode then disable all of your Extensions and Plug-ins and then try to find which is causing it by enabling '''<u>one at a time</u>''' until the problem reappears. '''<u>You MUST close and restart Firefox after EACH change</u>''' via File > Restart Firefox (on Mac: Firefox > Quit). You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the Safe mode start window.

  • Firefox keeps running in the backround after closing it, it just lingers there, and when I try to restart firefox, it says that I have to close the current one or restart my system to clear the last firefox. what can I do, thanks...

After the last update, my IBM Clone computer does not close the session of firefox when clicking on "close" it clears the screen back to the desktop but firefox continues to hang there in the backround and will not allow another session of firefox to start until the first session is closed. The only way to reconnect is to do a restart on my system, and then the old firefox session is closed and the new session will start.

Must be the "hang at exit" problem. <br /><br />

  • When I try to launch firefox it won't open a window. It shows that it is running in the task manager but I can't see it open on the desk top. I am trying to run 10 on windows xp. Any ideas?

This started when I tried to update firefox. Have unistalled and reinstalled and cleared the registry but nothing is working.

The "System Tray" is located at the very bottom right of your screen and is a list of most/all running applications that will show in this list.
For your SysFader issue, this "may" be the problem:
1 Find the "My Computer" desktop icon and right-click it. A pull-down menu will appear. Select "Properties."
2 Click on the "Advanced" tab. This will load a new page of options.
3 Select the "Visual Effects" tab at the top of the window and deselect "Animate Windows when minimizing and maximizing," "Fade or slide menus into view," "Fade or slide Tool Tips into view" and "Fade out Menu items after checking."
4 Click "OK." This will remove most if not all of the Sysfader effects, at the same time correcting related errors that used to come up during opening a new file or program.

  • When i try to download firefox message says no authentic certificate why?

just got new dell with windows8.1 and when i try to download it says certificate can not be verified

The BEST thing you can do is get rid of windows 8. It is a tad bit of a difficult task since MS makes you go through so many hops to install the vastly superior windows 7 but it can be done and it is very much worth the effort.

  • When i try to use firefox it says that install.rdf is not well formed or doesn't exist. what can i do?

i click the firefox button on my desktop and a window pops up saying what i wrote in my question. i turn the window off and firefox opens normally. it says exactly this:
Firefox could not install this item because "install.rdf" (provided by the item) is not well formed or does not exist. Please inform the authors about this problem.

This error can be caused by an extension that tries to install a plugin in a way that is not compatible with current Firefox versions.
Do you see any disabled extensions in Tools > Add-ons > Extensions ?
    See:
    *[[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]]
