When is too simple, reasoning not to use Java?

I wish to write a small program which gives the user 6 or 7 options. When the associated radio button is selected, a different executable file will be executed.
Is this overkill to script this with Java? Should I be simply writing a batch file for this operation?
Advice please.

If "batch" means Windows scripting language, I'd say that's a poor choice.
Who really cares? A small app like that won't be hurt much by using a solution that's less than optimal.

  • Need reasons not to use SMB/win2003 as file server for mac clients

    hey guys,
i'm looking for reasons not to use windwos2003 as fileserver with smb for use with os x in a graphic production environment.
can someone help? just need a sum up for "internal use"
smb seems to be slower than afp
    etc...
    thank you!

Well, it tends to be that saving over the network from Adobe and Quark apps "just works better" over AFP than it does over SMB.
Put another way, people wouldn't be paying $4000 for a software license form Extreme-ZIP so they can serve AFP from a Windows 2003 server if there wasn't a real benefit to this. You can get an Xserve for this same $4000

besides the pixel issue any other reason not to use iphone apps on ipad??

There are no technical reasons why you can't use them (unless they are some of the few apps that require full phone capability which you won't be able to install). -If you are happy with either using them in an iPhone sized portion of the screen, or with the pixelated 2x size, then use them. I use quite a few apps from my iPhone and iPod Touch, and I've got used to the pixelisation and I don't really notice it as much as I used to.

  • How does one know whether or not they use "Java applets"?

The support doc for the recent Java update (Update 8, for Snow Leopard), entitled "About Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 8," advises the following:
If you do not use Java applets, it is recommended that you disable the Java web plug-in in your web browser.
How does one know whether or not they use "Java applets"?
    Thanks.

Sometimes you have to dig to find out: http://earthnow.usgs.gov/earthnow_app.html
doesn't tell you directly, but it is mentioned in the FAQ that Java is required. If the content is appropriate, you can always ask here.
Thanks.  According to that webpage, my "Java is out of date."  When an error message like that is returned, I guess it's clear that "it's a Java problem."  Presumably, one would then just go to java.com and download the applet if he/she wanted to view the webpage.
I was wondering more about situation when unexplained problems that involved missing Java applets weren't noted in error messages.
But maybe I'm worrying about something that doesn't really need to be worried about.

  • Rverese proxy sugguestions - any reason not to use ISA2006 anymore?

This is a silly question, but im just looking to publish meeting content outside the organization to external users, is there any reason for me not to use the old reverse proxy i was using for OCS2007 R2 which is ISA2006 ? i know its out of support and
all of that but fundamentally it should do what i want it to do should it not? or are there any gaping security holes in the product i could drive a truck through?

I believe ISA2006 will work for simply publishing Lync Web Services. (there wasn't too much of a change in how the publishing works from ISA 2006 to TMG that I can recall.)
I am not aware of any giant security holes in the product, mainstream support did end in 2012 and I haven't seen any updates beyond 2009.
A couple other alternatives if you don't have an appliance you can use (i.e Kemp/Citrix/F5 Loadbalancer) are:
    IIS ARR http://blogs.technet.com/b/nexthop/archive/2013/02/19/using-iis-arr-as-a-reverse-proxy-for-lync-server-2013.aspx
    Windows 2012 R2 WAP http://blogs.technet.com/b/dodeitte/archive/2013/10/29/how-to-publish-lync-server-2013-web-services-with-windows-server-2012-r2-web-application-proxy.aspx
In fact: Microsoft actual suggest that you can use ISA here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg398069.aspx "You
can use Microsoft Forefront Threat Management Gateway 2010, Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2006 SP1, or Internet Information Server 7.0, 7.5 or 8.0 with Application Request Routing (IIS ARR) as a reverse proxy."

  • Is there any reason not to use spaces in document file names anymore in a document library?

We are revamping our sharepoint document library file naming conventions. In lots of blogs and tutorials, I have seen over and over the recommendation to use underscores instead of spaces in document file names in sharepoint. Part of this is I think to prevent
the infamous %20 in URLs pointing to the documents. That doesn't really concern us and we don't generally have file names that approach 256 characters.  We don't want to go the route of having different document names than document titles so we want our
document names to be a clear and readable as possible. We think that using spaces (and occasionally dashes) in the file names makes them more readable, and sharepoint 2010 seems to be able to search these file name correctly.  An example document file
name would be "elephants - how to clean elephant cages".
Has anyone run into a reason to avoid using spaces and dashes in document file names in sharepoint 2010? I don't want to start using spaces and then be sorry I did down the road. Thanks!

It isn't going to lead to the fall of western civilisation.
You will get longer and messier URLs for documents but it's very unlikely to cause issues. There have been some bugs in the past where hyphens in particular can be mis-encoded in searches but they only affect a small range of build numbers if memory serves.
I much prefer using no spaces for document libraries as it makes the starting URLs so much cleaner but that's a style question. For documents unless you've got a very strict document naming standard spaces are common and dashes aren't uncommon.

  • Applet does not load using java 1.5 through reverse proxy with certific...

    Hi,
    we have the following problem:
When using java 1.5 in our browser, our applet does not load. Using java 1.4.2 it works. It also works using java 1.5.0 using another reverse proxy.
The differences between the 2 reverse proxies (one works, one works not) we use is that the one through which the applet does not load has a certificate installed that is not for its hostname. Can this be the reason the applet does not load? Where can I find information about the sandbox of java 1.5.0 concerning these issues. Are there any docs of the security restrictions imposed by java 1.5.0 sandbox?
    Greetings,
    Tim

    Ok,
the solution to this specific problem was a misconfigured reverse dns lookup.
    Greets,

  • Deserializing a file not serialized using Java

    Hello ,
I am trying to deserialize and read a file which has been previously serialized using VC++. Is there a way to read a file serialized by VC++ using Java. When i read using ObjectInputStream, exception is thrown (StreamCorruptedException). The file structure of the serialized file is as below:
    PC Records(Array)
    ObjectRecord
    Name;(string)
    SecurityLevel;(unsigned char)
    SecurityGroup;(string)
    ScanTime;(unsigned char)
    ElementNum;(int)
    PCDevice;(unsigned char)
    m_SerNum[5];(unsigned char)
    m_DeviceChanCount; (unsigned char)
    m_ModelID; (unsigned char)
    m_ChanNum; (unsigned char)
    m_LastBlock; (unsigned short)
    m_ScanTime; (unsigned char)
    m_Owner; (unsigned char)
    m_Gain; (unsigned char)
    PCPath;(string)
    m_PCName;(string)
    a; (unsigned char)
    b; (unsigned char)
could somebody help me deserialize and read this file using Java. Any help and sample source code is greatly appreciated.

This can't be read from Java Serialization API 'cause Java Serialization API has it's on propietary format (that's one reazon why J2SE 1.4 introduced XML serialization)
If you need to read a file serialized in VC++, you will need to implement the code to read the file in Java.
If you only need to read the file secuentially (one record after the other loaded into memory) you can use a java.io.FileInputStream, and wrap it in a java.io.BufferInputStream to optimize reading.
The interface java.io.DataInput have a lot of methods you can use to read the fields (read signed ints, unsigned ints, chars, bytes). You can use then java.io.DataInputStream to wrap InputStream and read this kind of fields. You have to take special care with chars and strings, 'cause they are unicode in java and probably only ASCII on the VC++ generated file. Probably strings will have to be read byte after byte until the \0 mark is reached, unless string fields have a predefined length, in this case you can read [length] bytes from the input stream and create a string from this array.
If you need random access then you need java.io.RandomAccessFile, it also implements java.io.DataInput, so you have the methods to read ints, shorts, bytes, etc.
UTF strings are strings using UTF encoding, so probably this method will not help much in this case.

  • Any reason not to use microSD to SD adapter in tapeless camera?

I've been looking at getting a bunch of SD cards for my tapeless cameras, and the microSD seems to be cheaper (even with the adapter) and has better reviews than the regular SD cards.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231577
Any reason to stick with just the regular SD cards and not use the microSD with an adapter?
    Thanks.

I have issues investing a shoot  to an SD card..and you  want to shoot to a micro Sd card!
You are a brave man so good luck.
    (and.get Production Insurance).
FWIW - Any shoot I do to an SD card is "insured" by simultaneously  recording to a Samurai (SSD) as well as Production insurance.

  • Any reason NOT to use google addsense?

sounds straight ahead. Any cons of using addsense?
    Thanks

The only reason I can think of is: If you care about a graphically perfect appearance of the website then don't add Ads. Not because they look bad or they have any influence on how a website appears. But imagine the painting of Monalisa by Leonardo DaVinci with Ad added on... Say an advertising for Pasta displaying on the right top of the painting... It's not unesthetic but it wouldn't be the same painting anymore and wouldn't be visited at the Louvre by hundreds of thousands of people (ok... maybe it would...)
I hope you got what I meant to say

  • Another reason NOT to use nvide for opticals .

Yesterday i was going to rip a cd of marc anthony with sony copyprotection with "Easy CD-DA Extractor 7.0" for
transfering it to the wifes MP3 player (note! a legal copy for own usage) .I even tried EAC which should also work with protected cds .
    It was totally impossible .
Then after some thinking i descided to revert the IDE controller driver for the PATA channel where
the optical where located back to microsoft (again)  .
Guess what , the nvidia ide drivers was the culprit .
So , to sum it up . I'm never going to use the nvide at the PATA controller anymore .
Only for the serial ata controllers .

I install (NCQ on nv sata/raid0 for NF4) but then roll back the ide portion of the controllers to the native ms XP controllers.  This works.  Your experience with the newest nv sw controllers tells me there are still issues present.  And after being hosed so many times, it just doesn't make sense to use them.

  • Any reason not to use Airport Express?

I'm about to purchase a Airport Extreme Base Station to go wireless but have a question concerning connection of an older iMac G4 FP. Based on specs I need to get an older Airport Card for the iMac but with the high prices for these cards I'm considering just getting an AE instead and setting it up as a bridge. Figure that it's a wiser investment since I can later use the AE when I retire the iMac.
Is there anything I'm overlooking that would discourage this approach and make purchasing the Airport card a better solution?
    Thanks,
    Mark
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

In order to use an Airport Express in this manner you need to use WDS which a) some people find complicated b) halves the wireless bandwidth (only relevant for internal network file transfers).
Personally I would recommend an ethernet wireless bridge.
Examples of Ethernet wireless adapters are the Linksys WET11, Linksys WET54G, and the Buffalo Technology WLI-TX4-G54HP bridge.
