When might you reasonably expect a replacement machine?

I'm quite philosophical about electronic goods - a proportion will always have issues etc.
Having had a new MBP for three months now, I seem to be clocking up quite a few issues, which have all been discussed here.
1. Display issue where gradients are not rendered properly, resulting in clearly visible blotchy patches on images. An LCD test visually confirms the colours where this is happening.
2. The garbled text when scrolling / white flashes issue.
These may or may not be related to the reportedly faulty nVidia cards.
3. Failing USB ports. First noticed recently with a USB drive that wasn't recognised at all. Seemed OK with the digital camera, but not OK with the iPod. Resetting the PRAM cleared it for the USB drive, but no joy with the iPod - it gets halfway there in the iTunes opens, but has an issue talking to the iPod.
4. Random shutdowns - only happened three times over the course of one evening. Possibly heat related. But not generally a good omen.
5. User being logged out when fast user switching. Again, only happened a few times, so isn't replicable.
6. Uneven case. On it's own, I wouldn't be too fussed, but have seen reports of people getting their machines replaced.
The main issues are the display issues, and that's all a bit frustrating as long as both Apple and nVidia don't make any official announcement.
At the end of the day, having shelled out the cash, I'd just like a machine that worked as advertised, with the minimum of hassle.

I've reported the display issues and the user switching issues to engineers through the Bug Reporting so far.
The garbled text / white flashes remains under investigation, with nothing forthcoming.
The gradient thing - they emailed me a little diagnostic programme to run, and email them back some data from the machine. That was a few weeks ago - I've chased it up, but have heard nothing back.
I have also been into the local Apple Authorised repair place, but the jist of what they said was that it was almost certainly software related, so they couldn't really do anything. And that Apple would be reluctant to really do anything if - according to them - there wasn't an issue.
So I'm kind of partly hanging on for some feedback from Apple, and partly hesitant to make the trip to London (about 2 hours) to see a Genius, if they're not likely to be able to do much either.
I also know I should probably go through something like a complete reinstall, but am hesistant because it seems unlikely that it will fix anything, and don't want to screw it up even more.
So I know I've only really dipped my toes in the whole support process so far, and am just trying to gauge which way to go with it as much as anything.

  • What would justify a replacement machine rathet than repair?

I'm partly feeling cheeky, but partly genuinely think a replacement machine would be justified, and from a CS / goodwill POV the right thing for Apple to do.
Basically have had two major graphical issues - the first the much discussed nVidia related glitches (distorted text, white flashes etc), the second an dissue with some colour gradients not being rendered correctly.
Although 10.5.5 appeared to have resolved the nVidia issues, a genius in London advised that it hadn't officially been resolved, and advised a logic board swap.
I took it in to Birmingham yesterday, and they didn't want to swap the logic board, as the symptons were not present, but couldn't really reassure what the problem was, or whether or not it actually had been resolved.
They did however want to replace the LCD panel because of the gradient issue.
The situation currently is that the Genius in London has advised the guys in Birmingham to replace the logic board as well.
However, as these are the two single biggest components, and there's still a degree of uncertainty over the nVidia thing, I'd be happier if they just swapped the machine.
Given the circumstances, am I expecting too much?

I have no idea about Apple's policy on the matter. But common sense would seem to suggest that replacement is justified when the future cost of warranty service exceeds that of the repair. From the standpoint of you and I, we don't really have an idea of the costs involved.
A machine has a fixed cost per-unit. The individual parts presumably cost less than the unit, but the labor can be expensive -- but often the labor cost is incurred whether or not the service is made (e.g., you pay the same to keep a technician 10% busy as you do to keep him 90% busy; hopefully you can make sure to only have enough that they all tend to be busy). Finally, the company is only concerned about forward-looking costs in servicing a warranty -- it doesn't matter how much has already been spent, so much as how much is expected to be spent in the future (because, already rendered warranty service is already spent and the costs not recouped if a replacement is issued).
From the customer point of view -- a replacement is a mixed blessing because it means backing up and restoring your old machine and that there's a used computer out there with all your hard-drive contents floating around out there.

    Hi Janice,
What version of Mac OS are you using?
Adobe does not recommend migrating the software from one disk to the other.
Please run the setup file for Acrobat and reinstall the software. You might want to delete the existing version of Acrobat installed before reinstalling it.

  • Battery charging: When do you do it?

    Hey guys,
I've done searches on the forums and can't find the answer i desire. I know that the lithium batteries have charge cycles, and at least once a month you should fully drain, and fully charge the phone. And that there is no memory in the battery, so a partial charge shouldn't mess anything up (except the battery indicator)
But my question is, When do you charge it to make the battery last the longest. Not time between charges, but over all battery life. Everyone always complains you can't replace the battery yourself, and it is quite annoying to send your phone in for a replacement battery (oh hey, no phone for a month. great)
But what can we as end users do to have our batteries live a long life (and hopefully not lose it's charge capacity?
(also, i read that some applications don't shut down properly when you hit the home button. And to shut them down 100% you need to hold the button down for 8 seconds? is this true? where can i find more documentation on this? And is there anyway to "See" what apps are running? That would be a nice thing.)
    cheers,
    Chris

    Good point.
Problem is you don't have any control over the issue.
L-ion batteries typically have a recharge cycle of 500 times. Some confusion arises over what exactly a charge cycle is, is it full charge or incremental charges, so if I top-up say ten times, is that equal to one full charge? Experts will debate that one back and forth.
You plug in the USB cable and it starts charging, rather messes up your planned charging cycles, doesn't it?
Apple will need to redesign this phone to take extra capacity user replaceable batteries with a bulkier back panel ~ it has to become an option or even a neat lead to a belt battery, all features in use and the iPhone will last not much more than 2 hours, that's probably 4 full recharges in a day, that gives you 100 days, or a new battery every 3 months.
Obviously mileages vary ~ but at the rate I am using my iPhone, that's what my figures are panning out like.
My previous smart phone was charged each evening [mostly] expected life span one year and three months, it's still perfect after two years [but they do die quite quickly when they go].
Do please not here too, I could not play with my other phone the way I can with the iPhone ~ if I just used it as a phone, a charge a day would probably do too.
Most experts say that the L-ion battery has a total life span of no more than 3 years ~ from manufacture [not from sale of same]/

  • Transfer Applecare to Replacement machine??

Hi all. Seems my new MacBook Pro is indeed dead and Apple is accepting it as a return and giving me a full refund. They are sending me a replacement machine, which will be charged to my credit card. I purchased Applecare with the original machine. When I asked about transferring the AppleCare to the new machine, none of the three! reps I spoke with had any idea what to do. Maybe I should have insisted that they refund the policy and just buy another one...but I purchased it under my education discount and saved $100 that way and don't want their "system" to lock me out of another one at that price. I dunno.
Anyone ever been through this before? Is it a simple matter of just calling AppleCare and having them transfer the policy to the new machine? I will be out of the country for a few days and don't know when I'll have a chance to call so I figured I'd ask and see if anyone else ever experienced this issue.
    Thanks!

I had my mbp replaced by apple - they gave me two choices:
    1. To have the apple care transferred, which would keep the original date of purchase of the mbp that was replaced.
    2. To get a refund, which is pro-rated, and then buy apple care for the new mbp if i choose to.
I chose the second option because my unit being replaced was already 1.5 years old. So, they refunded to my credit card account, and then I bought apple care for the new MBP soon after I received the new one. (you have up to a year, but i didn't want to potentially forget about it).
hope that helps to answer your question.
OOPs, i just re-read your post- looks like my situation was not like your situation after all. I would think that Apple should have some sort of solution for you.
If I were you, I would ask for a refund of the apple care. Since they refunded you for the original unit you purchased, it seems logical that they should also refund your apple care. Other businesses that i have purchased from, will refund both the cost of the product and the extended warranty service if a return is made.

Startup issue when having more than one database on machine:
    I’ve installed two databases.
When I shutdown one of the database and try to start it up using
    Startup pfile=’…location..’;
I get ora-12514: TNS: listener does not currently know of service rquirest in connect descriptor
when I try it again after 3 seconds, I get a new error, ora-01041: internal error. Hostdef extension doesn’t exist
Shutdown and Startup gave no problems when I had one database. Why am I getting problems when I have two databases?
I’m using: show parameter pfile|spfile; to make sure I have the right parameter locations, so the error shouldn’t be from location.
I’ve never installed two databases on one machine, so maybe I’m making a first-timer’s error.
Anyone know how to get this working, i.e. starting and stopping DB without issues?
Using oracle 11gR2 on Windows 7 64bit, all is working normal.
    Thanks,

Next ... from the command prompt:

    sqlplus sys as sysdba
startup pfile='location of the respective db pfile'
Now, if you want to start or connect to another DB which is on the same server (again assuming the Service is STARTED) ...
From the same command prompt session or other ....

Error Code 0x80070035 shows when I try to Access Windows XP machine from Windows8/Windows7. in my PC i m installed windows8 and used primary and secondary IP. Primary is used for Access my Domain/Internet and secondary IP is used for access my VPN and
there is no internet on VPN. VPN is only used for my Head Office Appication. After i give secondary IP to my windos8/windos7 PC the Active network status changed to private network and not able to acces windows XP machines. Please Advice...

    Hi,
This error means that the Network path was not found. Was Windows XP locating in the same network as the secondary IP on Windows 8/7?
Please try the solution below.  Use the IP address of the target computer, not the computer name.
    1) Find out what the target computer's IP address is.  It is desirable to give the target computer a static private IP address, for example, 192.168.1.10, so it does not change.  Use the local windows help when sitting in front of the target computer
to do this if you don't know how.
    2) When sitting in front of the Windows 7 computer you want to access the target computer from, open Windows Explorer and in the address bar type \\ followed by the target computer's static address, for example,\\192.168.1.10 and hit enter.
If the target computer uses username/password sharing, after a few seconds you will be prompted for credentials.  Enter the same username and password employed to log on to the target computer when you are sitting in front of it.
The target computer will be added to the Windows 7 computer's Network list, appearing as an IP address instead of a computer name.  Then you can access its shares just as if it were listed by name instead of by number.
