When opening Firefox Mozilla,the following message appears -Update could not be installed.Make sure there are no other copies of Firefox running on your computer & then restart Firefox to try again.
If there are other copies of Firefox running, do not know how to check.

That is usually caused by a missing unpack directive (<em:unpack>true</em:unpack>) in the file install.rdf of that extension.

I click on Firefox and it says that Firefox is installing your updates and will start in a few minutes. Then I get "The update could not be installed. Please make sure there are no other copies of Firefox running on your computer, and then restart Firefox to try again." this cycle never ends. Do I need to deinstall Firefox and re-install? If I do that, do i lose all of my bookmarks, etc?

Help>About Firefox> says I am using Firefox/3.6.10./GTB7.1 I get a note from Mozilla that there is an update. I download it after granting permission to change my machine. I say OK. Thanks for the info about Trojan. It may be the problem. Meanwhile I went to Admin/Owner side and did some cleaning -- including trying to reload my Favorite/Bookmarks that have always carried forth from previous levels of Windows XP and earlier.
The new computer here did not grab the Bookmarks from the previous, and yesterday I thought I had them loaded, and today went to Worker-Bee side and they are not showing.
About those add-ons... I have no idea, but think I got everything up to date yesterday. I will look at your earlier reply tomorrow or this weekend when I have more time at home to learn from it.

I'm using Firefox 4 Beta and I tryed install update but I dont got success. Now every time that I go start the browser is displayed the mensage: "The update could not be installed. Please make sure there are no other copies of Firefox running on your computer, and then restart Firefox to try again"
My release is installed not in default drive C:\. I installed in the other Partition on my PC.
I don't have other release installed.Try a clean re-install.

Get this message everytime I try to upgrade from FF6 to 7. I have rebooted and tried again twice and still nothing. Shortly after I get the failed to install message FF6 starts up by itself. I followed the instructions on the support page. I did a Windows restart. I cannot see how other copies of Firefox could be running. No other apps have been launched and Task Manager only shows one copy of Firefox and no other apps. I have tried several times and always get the same result.

My OS is Windows XP version service pack 3. I even tried to install FF4 but it never get installed. As I mentioned my FF keeps trying to update itself but it gives the error message I provided in title. Now I don't have access to my FF browser and my life is stopped because I have all my passwords saved on FF. I restarted my notebook but it stills try to update itself giving the same error message. I can not also upgrade my Adobe reader 7.0.7 to 10 I have tried more than 10 times but it never gets upgraded. I had this Adobe problem since long time ago.

it happening again and again, and firefox is not opening.
Firefox doesn't shut down cleanly. It never has. It often only does a "top kill" which leaves the bottom running. It won't start again until you kill the entire process. Open Task Manager, hunt around for the remnant of the application ("firefox.exe"), and kill it using a bottom kill.
