When would you not use java

This is a discussion I would really like to hear some other opinions about. I know some people who keep thinking Java sucks and when they try to use it, they use it for completely the wrong tasks. Now I was thinking, in what situations should you avoid it altogether? This could become a nice reference thread to point those idiots to :)
I would avoid Java for:
- performance critical solutions (perfect timing, per frame graphics analyzers, etc.)
- general public applications. You have to install java first to run your software, which a lot of users will screw up or simply won't do. Java also eats up a lot of memory.
- platform dependend problems. Generally if your problem description includes the word "Microsoft", you should NOT use Java to try and fix it. You should be using Visual Basic or C#.
These are really common examples that I see on this forum almost every day. Are there any other examples that are worth mentioning?

Q>>Now I was thinking, in what situations should you avoid it altogether?
A>>When they use it for completely the wrong tasks.
You answered your own question.
I would avoid Java for:The stuff you say you would avoid java for, pretty much , well to me, says you won't use java.
- performance critical solutions (perfect timing, per frame graphics analyzers, etc.)Why not, all depends on your algorithms.
- general public applications. You have to install java first to run your software, which a lot of users will screw up or simply won't do. Latest Linux Distros, like JDS, come already packaged with JRE, so this isn't 100% true.
Java also eats up a lot of memory. So does windoz OS. I guess I'll avoid it.
- platform dependend problems. How so??? again see your original Question (Q above).
Java was created for platform independance.
When you create a program that considers Solaris, Linux, and cough windoz, Oh , don't forget MAC, you program each case, no big deal.

  • HT204053 Do you not use the same Apple ID and password as you would use for ITunes, IPhone and email?

Having already established 2 apple ID's.  I want to change the ID listed on my iphone.  Placing the new, ID on my phone it will not accept it.
Do you not use the same Apple ID and password as you would use for your IPHONE, EMAIL and ITUNES?

Where/how are you trying to replace it and what happens ? You should be able to log out of the currently logged in account for the stores by tapping on it in Settings > iTunes & App Store and you should then be able to log in with a different account, and for icloud email via Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars to delete and then add an account.

  • How do I turn AppleTV off when I'm not using it?

How do I turn off AppleTV when I'm not using it?

It actually goes to sleep instead of powering off. Apple TV only uses 6 watts of power. That would mean 10 Apple TVs would consume the same amount of power as one 60 watt bulb and that's when it's on (not in the sleep mode).
You can set it to go to sleep after 15 min., 30 min., etc. of inactivity in settings. I think the default is 15 min. That doesn't include watching a movie. You can also put it in the sleep mode in settings, but the easiest way is with the remote.
Hold the Play/Pause button on the reomte for 5 secs to put it to sleep. This only works from the main menu. To go to the main menu quickly, hold the menu button for 3 secs.

  • Should  I leave my macbook plugged in when I'm not using it?

Should I leave my macbook charging cable plugged in when I'm not using it?

It won't hurt anything (i.e., it won't overcharge). It isn't a good idea to leave it plugged in 100% of the time. One common recommendation is to use the battery at least one cycle per month without ever deeply discharging it. Ways to do that would be to use it on battery power until it is discharged to 50% twice during a month or to 80% 5 times during a month or some other combination that adds up to roughly 100% usage once per month at a minimum. Another way of stating that is that you should use the battery sometimes.

  • MacBook Pro 13" i7 2011 Freezing when I'm not using it.

I've got the 2011 MacBook Pro 13" i7 with 256GB SSD. It runs really2x fast and am very pleased with it. However, It has a weird issue... It totally freezes when I'm not using it sometimes. It's happened three times now and every time it freezes it would be when i left it for a while like seconds to 5 mins and when i get back it's already frozen. Note, it didn't freeze from coming from screensaver or sleep. How I left the screen is what I see when I get back. I can't move the cursor, the keys don't respond, when I close the lid it doesn't sleep. I'd have to press and hold the power button to force shut it down and boot up again.
I've already contacted Apple Support the second time it happened. The tech was friendly and we did some reseting of PRAM and stuff. I just put up iStat on my menubar to see if anything weird would show there if it ever freezes again after now the third time it happened!
    Please help! This is annoying.
    My specs:
    Mac OS X 10.6.7
    MacBook Pro 13" i7 20011
    2.7 GHz, 8GB ram, 256GB SSD.

    Thanks,
The sad thing is where I am, I don't think there are Apple replacements here yet. I had my mac bought in the US and brought by relatives all the way to the southern part of the Philippines.
It's just weird. I would understand more if my mac froze under a heavy task which so far it hasn't. I have run TWO Windows 7 instances: one Boot Camp, the other virtual, had a whole lot of applications running and while Even playing Star Craft 2! And it run so smoothly I was so impressed. It just so happens to hang when I leave it there doing nothing! ??

Assuming you are disconnecting from line power, when you say switched on, do you mean it was shutdown or in sleep mode?  If sleep mode the battery will still drain because sleep still keeps some things active and the battery does drain a little.  However, to go from 100% to 79% charge overnight is a bit excessive in sleep mode.  Unless you have some processes set to activate over night by the cron file and do things like backup the system.
What are the statistics on the battery, the apple in the upper left corner, About This Mac, More Info, System Report, Hardware, Power...things like battery Condition, Capacity, remaining charge, voltage, current.

  • My iphone 5, with iOS 7.0.2, is heating and consuming the battery very fast when 3G is on, even when I'm not using it. Any solution?

My iphone 5, with iOS 7.0.2, is heating and consuming the battery very fast when 3G is on, even when I'm not using it. Any solution?

iOS 7 has many multiple tasks. You can save battery life to some extent by few steps. First go to location services and bettr 'Off' them which are not needed. (Ex. Notes.. Reminders.. Etc). Also you can off few apps in 'get notifications' centre. Also usage of 3g by any mobile consumes much battery life. Better to connect any Wi-fi

I can not get ny updates and therefore not use Java, as it only run updates for MAC 10.7. and later. How do i get the updates to install and use JAVA ?

In Snow Leopard you update Java from Software Update (in the Apple menu). You can check your version by opening Terminal and typing
    java -version
(don't get creative and type anything else)
    The latest version is 1.6.0_65.

  • My iPhone5 battery dies when I'm not using it

My iPhone5 battery dies even when I'm not using it its like I put my phone down and it's a 10% then when I look at the battery later when I look at the battery it's like at 1% please help me thank you

    Battery life seems short
Click ( www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html) for tips on how to prolong iPhone's battery life.
Try turning iPhone off and then on again.
Connect iPhone to iTunes and restore iPhone.
If the screen shows a low-battery image, the battery is low on power and needs to charge for up to ten minutes before you can use it.
When charging iPhone, make sure to leave it charging until it is fully charged. You'll know the battery is fully charged when the battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen looks like this .
Note: When charging using a computer, don't connect iPhone to a keyboard. Also, the computer must be turned on and not in sleep or standby mode. If iPhone is connected to a computer that's not turned on or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPhone battery may drain.

  • HT1338 why does my imac keep making a noise every 30 seconds when I am not using it?

My iMac keeping making a sound (sort of a clicking sound) every 30 seconds when I am not using it. It is very annoying; is therre a way to stop it?

Bring it in to service, and ask them to tell you what the noise is.  Sometimes it just is the optical drive realigning itself.   It could be the sign of a dying hard drive.  Only they can tell the difference.

  • Why would you NOT enable Loop Guard on switch ports?

    Hello
Why would you NOT enable Loop Guard on switch ports?
It is disabled by default on all ports.
Since it prevents loops, in the absence of receiving BPDUs on non-designated ports, why would it not be enabled by default?

Good luck with that.  FCC already did and have left it alone...  My theory is because... Google charges carriers to use allow devices to use it.  At one point Sprint paid to go exclusive for wallet.  FCC can't force you to buy your competitors product.

Should I unplugged my A Extreme and my Mac daily when I'm not using them?

Only if you want to save electricity. Otherwise it is not necessary. If anyone else is using the WiFi from the Extreme, it won't be available if it's turned off. Maybe that is not an issue.

You can't, you will need to enter a credit card number before you can use that account in the store.
