WHERE HAVE ALL THE COMPUTER SCIENCES GONE?

It just seems like computer science isn't as big as it used to be. Even old video games used to be more groundbreaking when they came out compared to todays. Also some people discourage young students that want to get involved in programming. I disagree with this and think that programming is still cool even though its not a big deal like it used to be. Anyone else have any thoughts about this?

I disagree that computer science "isn't as big as it used to be" - at my school, the intro class is totally filled up - all 30 computers. There are also between 20 and 30 AP level students spread out in two separate periods. Then there is a third class, the second year AP students, whose first year of AP was in C++. As of right now, they will be the only people who get to do that because of the language change at our school. We may, however, convince our school to have a "Java 2" class for people who are second year AP students. In other words, time for us to learn the more advanced things in Java that aren't needed for the AP test, such as Swing.
The computer programming teacher at our school encourages almost anyone to take the class that wants to, but I know some AP students at my school will make the class seem too hard and discourage kids that way.
And of course games will be less groundbreaking - where else can they go? Once you get to a certain point, progress will be almost unnoticable. For example, computer chips can only get so fast because they can only cram so much into such a small place. From a sports perspective, say swimming or track, after a certain amount of time, you measure success in hundredths of a second - when before you might have done it in seconds or mintues.

  • Where have all the PRINTING presets GONE?

Even in the mac store they are gone.
Example, say you have a document and you want to reduce the size using quartz filter, before, it used to show "copies and pages" now it just says "last used", what happened to all the color, pages, duplex (if your printer has it) and all the many options that used to be there before 10.5.2?
    Thanks

Yes, it is not where it used to be but it's still there.
Check out this excellent document for using Quartz on Leopard

  • Where have all the ascx files gone in 15 \templates\controltemplates in SP 2013

    hi,
if i see the prev. version of SP and deveop web parts with ascx controls, the ascx  controls  were deployed into the  14\templates\controltemplates folder .
but in my sp 2013 , 15\templates\controltemplates folder, i am not able to see  my web part' s ascx  file .
did  MS change the architecture of deploying the ascx [ web parts] soem where else in SP 2013?

Open your Visual Studio WebPart project. Then go to the solution tree and open Package.
In Package go to Manifest tab and there you'll see all the controls routes that will be used to deploy them.
Even more, go to the solution tree. Open the VisualWebpart1 subtree and put a click on VisualWebPArt1UserControl.ascx and have a look at the Properties box.  You should see a field called "Deployment location" with the route where will be
    deployed the control.
You have to deploy the solution when you search in the controlteamplates folder for your custom control. When you retract the solution, the control template folder will be automatically deleted..

  • Where have all the plug-ins gone?

I re-installed InDesign CS3 after my hard drive was wiped clean with the re-installation of Windows XP, and I'm finding that some files won't open.  The error messages state that some plug-ins are missing and that the program and/or  the plug-ins should be updated.  I have run the update for InDesign, but this hasn't helped.  I don't know of any separate updates for plug-ins.  Any suggestions?

    1. Did you use any non-Adobe plugins in your previous installation? If you (or someone else) installed 3rd party plugins, you need to reinstall these as well. (I wouldn't know what "must have" 3rd party plugins there are -- the iTunes player for CS3? Tetris-in-a-panel?)
    2. Are you sure you are trying to open CS3 files? Trying to open a CS4 or CS5 file will give the same "helpful error message".

  • Where have all the old appointments gone from my calendar?

Now that I have signed up for iCloud, I can't find the old appointments in my calendar.  I need those for billings.  Anybody know where I can find them?

I think you;ll find them in iCloud. When I downloaded Mavericks, a warning came up that advised that my contacts and calendars would move to iCloud.
In the Favorites bar, click on iCloud and you should see a number of icons:
This is mine.Although my calendars have moved to iCloud and lost from the original calendars, I now have 2 sets of Contacts. Just click on Calendars and it should show up, albeit in a slightly different arrangement.

  • ITunes 8 - where have all the import settings gone?

    when will they ever learn?
am I nuts - I can not find the import settings in the new iTunes -
it appears to no longer be in the "advanced" menu, or am I missing it? it just isn't there - I don't see any "burning" settings either.
    help!
    w

right you are! I keep wishing that iT would put them on the main menu - rather than a sub or sub-sub-menu, but there are probably few iT users such as myself that frequently switch between stereo & mono.
does anyone know of a script to automatically change from stereo to mono and back? I guess it's just as easy to go into a sub-menu than run a script...
incidentally, the apple help menus have not changed yet with the new version, every thing I found kept telling me to look in "advanced" rather than general.
    thanks!

  • Where have all the HD movies gone from the iTunes store?

Not been in for a while and decided to purchase a film but there doesn't seem to be an option to download in HD anymore. Have apple stopped doing this or am I being thick?

In the US iTS you can get HD content. It might not be available to other countries iTS.
From the iTS main window select 'Movies' - in the US iTS there is a drop down menu.

  • Where have all the fora (forums) gone?

    Hello,
logged in today and none of the technical fora, those dealing with PL/SQL, Jdeveloper, XML, the RDBMS itself, are visisble. I am hoping this is only a temporary technical glitch.

Hello; the forums were turned off briefly, unintentionally. We apologize for any inconvenience.

  • Why can I only see iCloud email from the last 4 months? Where have all my old emails gone?

I was trying to track down an old email from November last year and having used the search tool with no luck resorted to scrolling through the weeks. I then discovered to my horror that I didn't have any emails beyond 1/12/13 !!
I have subsequently checked online using iCloud and the results are the same. Where have all my emails gone? I have been a MobileMe member since it started and pay for increased storage - which I am no where near utilising - how can I retrieve the 'missing' old emails? I have many Apple devices and it appears they are mssing on them all....

You might want to go to icloud.com and open your calendar, then click the gear icon and choose Preferences, then make sure you aren't hiding old events on the Advanced tab.

  • Where have all the Stars gone?

    Hello all,
I have just realised that all the Stars by Posters' names have disappeared. Would love to know why that may have happened. Thanks.

    Hi ljm,
The Star (Kudo) feature is enabled for the majority of the forum boards, however this feature is disabled in the Lounge and Forum Guidance boards.
    Hope that helps,
    Cheers

  • Where have all the people gone?

Several years ago (5+) all the other web-tier forums (JSP,JSTL,Servlets) were flooded with questions everyday. So why are they so quiet nowadays? Does this reflect the trend of moving towards different technologies like web-services and SOA or are people using different languages? Or perhaps, have programmers just gotten more experienced?

Very good question. I don't believe that the lack of contributors is due to people gaining experience as there will always be people learning. I believe it is more due to the technologies that are now being used. Struts and Spring-MVC for instance perform a lot of the work for you. And if you are using some good plugins in your IDE, you might not even see the guts of the Struts/Spring app. I built a basic Struts and Hibernate app a while ago using NetBeans 6.7 and it was easy.
Now I'm back to working on a Servlet and having problems... not because Servlets suck, but because some of the other frameworks I've used in the past hid a lot of the inner workings from me and I never really learned them.
Maybe the rise of C#, Ruby on Rails and Grails may also having something to do with it... I've never found developing Java web apps an overly quick process, but I'm not an expert. People rave about the "ease and simplicity" of RoR... maybe they know something I (we) don't.

  • Where have all the patchsets gone?

By my count -nitro, -morph and -cko have all died a death!  They were the only ones I ever used!

Maybe everything they were supporting has been merged into the kernel tree? Or outright refused...

  • Where have all the Gurus gone?

If the DW gurus are not going to be in this forum answering questions, where can we find them? Did they start their own forum?

The community of the NNTP was a key DW asset
    Agreed.
DW is greatly diminished by the adobe takeover
Disagree.  I think that Adobe has done very well with it.  The more dynamic sites that are now on the web I think diminish the value of DW to some extent.
killing off  the NNTP will further hasten the demise of dw
Disagree.  The experts that were on the NNTP were more of an "bonus feature" that came along with DW.  Many have made the jump to the new forums.
Lets be straight here, dw needs lots of user support for the less than expert
I'd say that web design and development needs user support for everyone...even the experts.
dw with adobe's management is certain to die
It's a little early to start jumping to conclusions over a forum change that is still in its infancy.  Give it some time.  People that left will come back and if they chose not to...that is fine.  They are more than entitled to do what they please. New users will emerge over time.

  • Revel where have all the photos gone?

Okay I am very upset that my picture files have gone to Revel.  I do not know how to find them. I need these pictures for work I am doing. What in the world allows you to take these files from my PC, not Mac, and store them somewhere else!
    AGA

    AGA-
I would like to help clarify what is happening with Revel. Revel does not take files from your Mac or PC. The only files that moved are ones from Photoshop.com to Revel. Cloud - to - cloud. The only way they could disappear from your computer that I can think of is if you deleted them or you had Elements syncing to your Photoshop.com account and you deleted them from Photoshop.com before syncing.
Emails were sent out to users explaining that Photoshop.com was about to be discontinued, and informing users that their files would be migrated to Revel unless they opted out. This was done as a courtesy so that users could have a means of saving all their photos (jpg) on the cloud for viewing and sharing without having to go to the effort of archiving and re-uploading. Additional  emails went out closer to the time. The opt out period has ended and we are in the transition period actively migrating photos to Revel.
If you had photos on Photoshop.com and their migration is complete (you would receive an email), then go to adoberevel.com on a a browser and login the same way you did in photoshop.com...with an adobe id(email) and password. Your files will either be in a library  called photoshop.com library or in one called <your first name>'s library.
If you need more assistance, please let me know.
