Where is my boot log

Hi I am trying to diagnose an error with one of my startup scripts in rc5.d. When I go to view boot.log it is empty along with all the other ones (boot.log.1, boot.log.2). Where can I find the boot logs to see what started up successfully and what did not.

I've got exactly the same problem. I need to be able to review the boot log on a remote system but all I can see is an empty boot.log, boot.log.1, etc. Removing "quiet" in grub.conf has no effect.
From doing a bit of googling, it seems like it may be a known problem with upstart across a number of distros:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-general-1/howto-workaround-broken-upstart-boot-logging-746468/
Is anyone aware of an official fix for this?

The logs are nowadays in the journalctl - see the wiki and the man page.
    Post your /etc/fstab.

    journalctl | grep /dev/sr0
    Is empty as well.

  • OEL 5.4 boot.log always empty

I need to be able to see a log of all my boot messages in order to diagnose a problem. The /var/log/boot.log file is always 0 bytes after bootup.
Since I'm running OEL 5.4 as a virtual machine guest under VM Server, there's no physical console available to watch and by the time the java-based web console app starts up after doing a virtual power-on, all the boot messages have already scrolled away.
Every other Linux on the planet logs the boot messages to the /var/log/boot.log file. Is something broken with OEL/RHEL 5.4?

Linux (not just OEL, but everyone) when through a stage where {font:Courier}/var/log/boot.log{font} was always empty. Not just a kernel-level issue, either.
As a work around, try configuring the domU kernel to use VNC for booting. Then, the kernel will pause at boot-time until a VNC connection is made. Then booting recommences normally. This will let you get the boot messages.

  • How and where to access the logs in OpenUI5

If I am using logging in OpenUI5 with
jQuery.sap.log.info debug etc then where can see these logs when I run web page ,it does not come on console.

I expect it's due to the logging level, the default setting for the productive minified javascript is Error, so will only display the FATAL or ERROR messages in the console.
If you switch to use the -dbg version the ldefault logging level is DEBUG, so should display your logging.
    https://openui5.hana.ondemand.com/docs/guide/Configuration.html
    logLevel
    0|1|2|3|4|5|6| NONE|FATAL|ERROR| WARNING|INFO|DEBUG|ALL
    ERROR
Sets the log level to the given value. For minified (productive) sources, the default level is ERROR, for debug sources it is DEBUG. At runtime, the log level can be modified with  jQuery.sap.log.setLevel

    Transaction RSA1 "BW Administrator Workbench"

Table change log is not active (see transaction SE13) but as far as I can read the source code some critical events are logend in the <a href="http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw2004s/helpdata/en/3a/c8263712c79958e10000009b38f936/frameset.htm">Application Log</a>. View the entries for object LSYS_DELETE_<logsys> with message 618(RSAR) using transaction SLG1 .

  • What is the best way to generate a "boot.log" on an arch64 system?

I want to save the information echoed to the screen during boot to a log file.
My understanding is that this can be enabled in several ways, but usually most cleanly by appropriately modifying one's syslog.conf file.
Looking inside "/etc/syslog-ng.conf" it's not clear that the boot.log functionality is in fact easily turned on with arch systems.
For old redhat systems (eg.) this information used to be routed through "local7."  Does anyone know the proper (or at least a good) way to do this on a modern arch system?  I'd like to avoid an ugly hack.

  • Location where the change document log is stored

    Hi all,
In SRM bidding process, I need the initial bid price and the final bid price, quantity before negotiation and after negotiation, PR or project number for that bid invitation number. Can anyone tell me where these are stored. Actually I want to know where the changed document log is stored.
    Regards,
    Asha

    Hi Asha,
AFAIK there is no Project Number in Bidding Engine.
Until Quote versionning (SRM 6.0 ?), there is no other way than looking at change documents.
All changes are stored in change tables: CDHRD and CDPOS.
You can try to reuse FM BBP_CHANGE_DOC_GET_NEW.

  • Looking for a boot log??

    Running Solaris 9 on SPARC
    Looking for boot information?
Are the specifics of what may have failed during boot logged anywhere?? Results of the rcx.d scripts???
    Thanks

Very true about dmesg. I was thinking only of the startup scripts even though the OP asked about "boot" information.
If the machine actually makes it to multiuser, then 'syslogd' will dump the dmesg buffer into /var/adm/messages, and that's a good place to look anyway.

  • [SOLVED] Where can I find log of checks taking place while booting.

    Dear all,
I finally managed to install Archilinux in a Virtualbox Virtual Machine.
Everything seems fine and the OS boots correctly, but when the system is loading I can see that one of the checks performed at boot
returns a FAILED message. The problem is that it is so fast I can't read it.
I also notice a Yellow message but, again I can't read what it is about.
I know it might sound a silly question, but is there a way to se a log of these checks?
Thanks a lot in advance for the help!
    Cheers,
    Luca
TLDR: all the solutions proposed below are valid (and well worth reading the links for learning purpose). If you just want the list of the failed actions, you can get it with the command
    sudo journalctl -b | grep -i failed

  • Where to look for log files & crash reports to help debug lockups?

Where would I look for possible log files or crash information that may provide clues on what the problem is?
Three or four times in the past few days my system has became unresponsive requiring a power-cycle. The little prism-colored round-cursor appears. I can drag windows about with my BlueTooth mouse (but not the trackpad) and that's about. The Function keys are not responsive. Other times the UI may becomes totally unresponsive.
A couple of weeks ago I Carbon Copy cloned my hard drive to a new 500GB Hitachi 7200 RPM ( I have 200GB free space now ). Before upgrading, I do not recall having had this problem. It usually occurs when I am running a Linux Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.2 VM under Parallels. Parallels may have nothing to do with it as that's what I do all day ( develop Linux software in a VM ).
    I have a MacBook Pro 2.4Ghz, OS X 10.6.3.
Thanks in advance for any tips or suggestions,

This is a Mac OS X issue. I am not using Boot Camp or otherwise dual-booting. I am running Linux in a virtual machine under a Parallels Mac OS X host; in effect running Linux as an application under OS X.
Unfortunately I did not see any clues in either log file location. Thank you very much for explaining where to look. I ran Disk Utility and repaired a bunch of permissions. Perhaps I should have done this before and after making the Carbon Copy clone.

  • Where to see the log files of runtime

For my installation, the locations mentioned in the documentation here http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E13154_01/bpm/docs65/admin_guide/index.html?t=modules/logging/c_Head_Logging.html does not contain any log files.
