  • I woke up at 3am to find my MacBook Pro in the middle of a file transfer using AirDrop.

         I woke up at 3am to find my MacBook Pro in the middle of a file transfer using AirDrop. I had not accepted any file transfers via AirDrop as I was asleep so I am a bit confused by all the posts that say that the only way it will work is by the end user accepting a request to transfer files. I am on a home network which has both a soft and hard firewall. I checked my firewall logs and have no signs of intrusion or intrusion attempts. I checked my network map to see see if someone had brute forced my router and was using it but the only assets listed were mine. My router is set up to not be accessable from wireless computers, and is filtered to only allow use by a assets in the MAC Address list. I am an IT by trade but this is my first mac so I am not completely savy in the ways of the ways of macdom. I have found several posts with suggestions on how to turn off and came up with the following terminal command "defaults write com.apple.NetworkBrowser DisableAirDrop -boolean YES". My question is this, how is it possible that my AirDrop was activated and in the middle of a file tranfer if I did not initiate it? I do have a MacMini on my network but its WiFi is turned off so the transfer was not with it. I have read on different posts that you cannot AirDrop if the computer is not on the same network but there were no foreign assets on my network. So my question is this
    1. If AirDrop can not be used with another computer if it is not on the same network, how was it being used?
    2. How can AirDrop be used to xfer files if I did not accept or initate it?
         It seems to be a pretty big security hole to me. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

    It could just be a bad disc - I use Verbatim and have only had one fail in a ten-year time period. Try getting a batch of Verbatims and see if you have any problems. I didn't even know that there were Kodak branded discs...

  • HT204144 File transfer using Airdrop from iphone to Macbook Pro

    File transfer using airdrop form Macbook Pro to iphone is working...but from iphone to Macbook Pro is not working, Why?

    Hi Brok25;
    Thanks for the question.  The resource below explains the specs and settings that are needed for AirDrop.  Check the settings and look to see if your MacBook Pro is listed.
    Mac Basics: AirDrop lets you send files from your Mac to nearby Macs and iOS devices - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203106
    Sending files to and from an older Mac
    If a Mac you're using with AirDrop was manufactured before 2012, you can send and receive files with other Mac computers.
    On the sending Mac, click "Don't see who you're looking for" in the AirDrop window.
    Select the option to "Search for an Older Mac."
    On the receiving Mac, open a new Finder window and click AirDrop in the sidebar.
    Tips for sending files
    Make sure Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are enabled on your Mac and your iOS device. Although you don't have to connect to a specific network, Wi-Fi needs to be on to send and receive files using AirDrop.
    Move your devices closer together. AirDrop is designed to work within a range of approximately 30 feet (9 meters). If you need to send a file to someone farther away, consider using File Sharing, iCloud, or email instead.
    If you're using a firewall on your Mac, you won't be able to receive AirDrop files if you have enabled "Block all incoming connections" in the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences.
    Make sure your devices meet system requirements for AirDrop.
    System Requirements
    To see if your Mac works with AirDrop, make sure you’re in the Finder by clicking the desktop (the background area of your screen), or by clicking the Finder icon in the Dock. Then, check to see if AirDrop is listed as an option in the Go menu. If you don't see AirDrop listed, your Mac doesn't support this feature.
    In order to transfer files between a Mac and and an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch
    your iOS device needs to include a lightning connector
    your iOS device needs iOS 7 or later installed
    your Mac needs to be a 2012 or later model with OS X Yosemite installed
    Your Mac and iOS device both need bluetooth and Wi-Fi turned on. You do not have to be connected to a specific Wi-Fi network.
    To transfer files between two Mac computers, you need the Mac models listed below with Wi-Fi turned on and OS X Lion or later installed.
    MacBook Pro (Late 2008 or newer)*
    MacBook Air (Late 2010 or newer)
    MacBook (Late 2008 or newer)*
    iMac (Early 2009 or newer)
    Mac Mini (Mid 2010 or newer)
    Mac Pro (Early 2009 with AirPort Extreme card, or Mid 2010)
    *The MacBook Pro (17-Inch Late 2008) and the white MacBook (Late 2008) do not support AirDrop.
    For help identifying your Mac, choose About This Mac from the Apple menu. You can refer to the Apple Support website to find out if your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch includes a lightning connector.
    Cheers,
    - Judy

  • What to do with dmg files after use

    I've been keeping dmg files in the Shared user folder after downloading the application. I guess I was thinking this was because I didn't have an actual disk in case I needed to reinstall. Now I'm getting a new iMac and want to set it up right. Is it OK to do this? Or should I copy the dmg file onto a CD?
    Thanks!

    a brody wrote: No. But there is also a data loss bug that affects 10.6 and 10.6.1 when it comes to using it with Snow Leopard and PowerPC. I'd rather not venture that path if I don't have to.
    Been trying to find out about that. Searching around for "data Loss bug," saw some items related to "Guest account bug," but can't find anything connected to using PPC with Intel. Can you possibly provide a link where I might read more about that?
    And curious to know if you know if this specific bug, which would, seemingly, have potentially affected all users, was fixed with 10.6.2 or 10.6.3?
    from Wikipedia Article: A bug in Mac OS X versions 10.6 and 10.6.1 which, in rare cases, caused loss of user account data after use of a previously-existing guest account by users ...
    If it was only 10.6. to 10.6.1, even if it is PPC-Intel related, +and if it's been fixed+ , don't see why it would apply to someone Migrating to a new computer, which would almost certainly ship with, at least, 10.6.2 and maybe 3.

  • Where are my files after running Migration Assistant?

    I ran Migration Assistant using a Time Machine back up as I bought a new MacBook Pro that could hold all my files that I previously had on an iMac and another MacBook Pro. I first ran Migration Assistant and got all my files, preferences etc. on the new MBP no problem, but then after trying to combine the files from the iMac using a Time Machine back up as well, I don't see any of the files from my iMac available anywhere. However, all the space is filled up. Where are my files? Am I doing it wrong?

    Have you read for possible solutions over in the "More Like This" thread over here?----------------------->

  • How can I find out where the Library files currently used by iTunes are located?

    I have had a bit of a nightmare sorting out my iTunes files so I have various versions of Library files all over the place. How can I tell where the Library file that iTunes is currently using is located? In Preferences I can see the Library "Name", but I don't think that is much help. Preferences also shows where my i-Tunes media folder is but not where the Library files are.
    Any help greatly appreciated.

    Ah, I was assuming you would search in Finder and display some details. All alternative approach is to Option start iTunes and click the Choose option. It should show a file selection box targeted at the folder of the currently active library.

  • HT4889 How do change the ownership of files after using the migration assistant?

    After I copied all of my files across using the migration assistant, the tool is nice enough to assume that I want to use the same ID that I had on my PC.  This is not my case as I am using a different name on the mac.  How do I get the files from the other user name?  I have already set the sharing permissions so that I can see them on both user ids, however the only way I can see to update is to copy them all.  As I have about 1TB of files, this is a little inconvenient.  Any thoughts?

    Thanks.  It got me on the right track.  At the end, I copied the 1TB over and just deleted the other profile.  I tried to set the ownership to my regular ID by removing the lock from "Get Info" but I still had to move them out of the other "user" folder.

    how to find files after migration has finished

    If you don't have any file you need in your old account, open System Preferences > Users and Groups and delete the old user. If not, I recommend you to migrate your files of your old account to the new one using Shared folder or an USB drive

  • "Damaged" fonts in pdf file after using TouchUp Text Tool

    Hello,
    I have a question regarding an issue with lost fonts in a pdf file.
    The document was created in Adobe InDesign and printed to pdf.
    However, after using the "TouchUp Text Tool" in order to check the font for a certain text, several attributes of the font have been damaged in the entire pdf: all characters in "small caps" have been transformed to regular.
    We've had 3 cases so far.
    Does anyone know how we can prevent this from happening again?
    When exporting the document to pdf, all fonts were embedded, I am not sure if this can be the cause.
    Thank you in advance for any suggestions!
    Paula

    We are using Adobe 8 Professional.
    Bill@VT, I am not sure what you are asking me
    I have checked the Preferences for the pdf file and the "Use system fonts" case is checked.
    When opening the pdf file, the fonts were ok, but somewhere along the process, the small caps were lost.
    Maybe a print screen will be of use: the presentation above is the correct presentation (the one immediately after exporting to pdf); the presentation below is the one after all fonts were damaged.

  • Problem reading file after using webutil_file_transfer.as_to_client

    Hi all,
    The Forms webapplication I'm working on has to talk with a cardreading-application on the client-PC. The communication is carried out by exchanging small files. Reading from the client by Forms on the AS goes well (using client_text_io from webutil). The problem arises when the application has to respond back with a file. The file is made on the AS and then transfered from the AS to the client using webutil_file_transfer.as_to_client. This file can not be read by the cardreading application when the AS is on Linux. Our developement AS server is on a Windows 2000 box and then the communication doesn't show this problem.
    If I open the file from the AS on Linux , I can see that there is only 1 long line. The Windows version of the file contains 2 lines (as it should be). It seems that before/during/after the transfer some special characters like carriage return and tab are causing the problem.
    Looking in web_file_transfer.as_to_client I see that the procedure reads lines from a temporary file into a buffer. The lines are separated by a CHR(10). Could the transfer from Linux to Windows(DOS) cause a problem with these characters ?
    Has anyone experienced this problem ? If someone has a clue this would be very welcome.
    We work with :
    - Forms and AS 10.1.2.0.2
    - Webutil 1.0.6
    - Development OS: Windows 2000 (Service Pack 4)
    - Production OS: Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS release 3 (Taroon Update 3)
    - Client-PC OS: Windows 2000 (Service Pack 4)
    Thanx,
    Enrico

    Without going into a long winded answer, the only thing I can really offer is to say this... If you feel as though your code has been correctly written and you simply cannot identify any other possible solution, add SYNCHRONIZE. In short, its execution acts similar to a reset or refresh button.
    Another common place where SYNCHRONIZE has been helpful is when calling RUN_REPORT_OBJECT. For example, if you use the code we offer in the Forms/Reports Integration document you will find that it works very well - most of the time. However, sometimes it fails for what seems to be unexplainable reasons. If you message out the values being assigned you will see that some variable values are not being set even though the code execution has already passed the point where a value should have been assigned. Adding the SYNCHRONIZE just after the point where the value should have been assigned forces the assignment before executing the next line of code. For example,
         v_rep := RUN_REPORT_OBJECT(repid);
         rep_status := report_object_status(v_rep);
    In the above code, a request for a report is made followed by a check of its status. At this point you would expect that the status would be something like one of the following:
         'RUNNING', 'OPENING_REPORT', 'ENQUEUED'
    However, we have seen instances where the value assigned to the variable would actually be NULL, which of course will make the rest of the code likely fail. By adding SYNCHRONIZE the problem is correctable.
         v_rep := RUN_REPORT_OBJECT(repid);
         rep_status := report_object_status(v_rep);
         SYNCHRONIZE;
    It is important to understand, however that using SYNCHRONIZE comes at a price. Each time it is executed a network round-trip occurs which will give the application the appearance of degraded performance. So use this built-in only when you know you must.

  • Where to put files in using runtime.exec(run.exe)?

    I try to use the following program in EJB to call my EXE program in the J2EE server:
    runtime.exec("c:\\j2ee\\public\\exe\\run.exe temp.txt");
    In the execution of mill_turn.exe, it will open several files for read and write.
    So where to put the file temp.txt and other files the run.exe need to read?
    Looks like the J2EE server can not find them?
    Thanks!

    I got it in Java SE1.4.
    File dir=new File("c:\\j2ee\\public_html\\Mill_turn\\exe\\");
    Process proc = rt.exec(cmd,null,dir);Use above codes, I really got the right output from my external program for the first time. But , after that, the output keeps same when I change the filename in the following code:
    cmd="c:\\..\\run.exe temp.prt"
    to
    cmd="c:\\..\\run.exe Abc1.prt" , which must have different output.
    The codes for calling external program are implemented in the SessionBean of J2EE.

  • Error opening Project 2007 file after using project 2010

    This is the second time I'm experiencing this problem.
    Created a file (say Rev 1) in Project 2007 at work and took it home and updated it using Project 2010. When I finished updating using Project 2010, I saved the file in Project 2007 format. Came to work the next day, opened the file using
    Project 2007 and did a "Save As" so that I have another revision of the file (Rev 2).
    After updating Rev 2 in Project 2007 I closed it but when I came to work the next day I couldn't open Rev 2 file again either in Project 2007 or 2010. This has happened to me with 2 different files.
    The error message I get is

  • How do I recover my files after using time machine restore?

    Hello guys! I have been using Time Machine to back up my Macintosh HD into an external disk in August this year. Considering the limited storage of my external disk, I have excluded all of my photos and musics to be backed up. Today I got some problems of my system and started using time machine to restore my computer to the state of August. After restoring, I found all of my photos and musics and other important files which have been excluded to be backed up by time machine are missing. What a disaster. Is there any way to recover all the missing files? Or is it possible to undo today's time machine recovery? Many thanks in advance!

    many thanks for your reply. But for the current matter, do you have any other great ideas for me to take back all of my missing files. I will definitely buy a lager storage disk to back up all the files. But how could I solve the current issue? I have already tried the software you mentioned in the lien, it seems no help. Thank you anyway!

  • Where do AVI files transferred by Airdrop to an iPhone go?

    I've just copied a couple of videos across (I'm using the Yosemite beta and iOS 8 on an iPhone 6 Plus). The MP4 file goes into the Photos app, but the AVI files seemingly completed the transfer but then can't be found. Are they still on the phone? If so, where are they and how would I access them? I've looked in the Videos app and I've also got an app called PlayerXtreme that is supposed to play the file type, but it's not in either app.

    Same way it works with any computer...when you delete something, the data isn't actually deleted, just the pointers to the data. As you use your device, the data gets overwritten, since the iOS views it as "free" space..
    If you want the data truly gone, you need to erase your phone. Same way it works on any computer.
