Where to backup RMAN repository?

Oracle recommendation is to backup databases with RMAN using RMAN Repository Database. But how about RMAN Repository? Should it become client of the same repository(itself)? Right now I am using RMAN to backup repository database into control file.
Not sure that's right thing to do though ... I need some guidance from experienced dba's.

Include the recovery catalog in your backup and recovery strategy. If you do not back up your recover catalog and a disk crash occurs, you may lose some or all of your data.
Make Logical Backups
Make Regular Backups
Back up the recovery catalog with the same frequency that you back up your target database. For example, if you make a weekly whole database backup of your target database, then back up your recovery catalog immediately after each target database backup. The backed up catalog will have a record of the target backup preceding it, so if you are forced to restore the catalog you will also be able to use it to restore the target database backup

    I know Enterprise Edition allows setup of Enterprise Manager repository and RMAN repository. Can those be setup on a different box then the one where the main database is? I ask this because I want to have some redundancy by not using the same box for monitoring and backups.

    YOu can setup grid control and monitor not only one but several database server from it. On db server you just have install agent to talk to grid control and you will be in business.

    Yo would be using the RMAN executable in the target ORACLE_HOME (ie, RMAN would be 'local' to the database).

  • RMAN repository maintenace and the availability

    I have 10 production and 10 test databases in 2 servers(Test and Production). RMAN Backups have setup and add all the 20 databses in to a repository in one of the Test server database called CODP.
    So my question is as all the databases added to CODP db repository and codp database also add in to the same database repository it self. If CODP database corrupted all the data in the repository will be lost and no way to recover unless there is a another backup or setup.
    So my question is what would be the best approach to handle this situation?? Appriciate any comments or advices.

    Hello,
    Consider RMAN repository database as one of the production database and you should have a proper backup strategy for your RMAN repository database so that in case any problem happens, you immediately restore the RMAN repository. Put your RMAN repository in archivelog mode and take backups regularly and if appropriate, you can setup replication of RMAN repository schema in another remote database.

  • RMAN repository clean up

    Hi,
    I am having 10g db and backup policy uses RMAN.
    Daily backup is taken by RMAN and my retention policy is default.
    Now my total catalog db size is 12 GB,
    but i want to remove entries before 1 months from repository because all the archives are already taken in backup and also applied to stand by db.
    Is there any method to clean up RMAN repository ?

    This is what I do to reconcile the contents of the recovery catalog with the backup files on disk. Check out Oracle's documentation on RMAN commands before executing these commands.

  • Backup RMAN Incremental Level 1 without Level 0 - 10gR2

    I'm a bit confused after some tests.
    The Question: It's mandatory to perform backup incremental level 0 before the level 1 using Oracle 10gR2 ?
    On Oracle 11.2 it's mandatory but on Oracle 10.2.0.5 I don't know.
    Test on 11.2. If doesn't exists level 0 rman take care about it and perform automaticaly level 0 before level1

    After spending a time studying about this I find out this:
    Your expanation apply only in Oracle 10gR1/R2.
    Because there is differences between RMAN Version 10gR1/R2 and 11gR1/R2 about Incremental Level 1 and this confuse me.
    Oracle 10gR1/R2 run only one backup incremental level 1 even if level 0 not exists .
    Oracle 11gR1/R2 run two backups incremental if level 0 not exists. i.e level 0 first and after that level 1.
    Oracle 10gR2
    If no level 0 backup is available, then the behavior depends upon the compatibility mode setting. If compatibility is >=10.0.0, RMAN copies all blocks changed since the file was created, and stores the results as a level 1 backup. In other words, the SCN at the time the incremental backup is taken is the file creation SCN.

    I installed informatica 9.0.1 on linux. and created repository from admin console. now I want to change the rep service name and there is no option to do that and created new rep service with name Oracle_BI_DW_Base. service is up but got an issue with code page. I was disables previously created rep service now when I try to enable it it is trying to connect Oracle_BI_DW_Base repository. dont know this repository over written old one.

  • Where is backup stored?

    i am using windows xp. i know itunes places the back up in \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
    however, in my application data folder, there is no apple computer folder. even after i clicked "show hidden files", it still does not show.
    i am worried, if my computer crashed, i would not be able to restore my iphone backup because i didnt manage to back up the backup.

  • Two ESAs where the backup hosts the ISQ with CM (KB: 610)

    Hi,
    last Tuesday we had a small discussion at the IronPort Partnerday about the Knowledge Base article 610
    "Configure two ESAs where the backup hosts the ISQ with Centralized Management".
    The main problem with the proposed solution is that you have to break your clustered configuration for HAT/RAT. Which means you need to configure white-/blacklisted Servers and Recipients in the Access table on both machines again. Therefor I would like to suggest a new way of doing this, which leaves me the benefit of the Centralized Managment for the cost of having an idle listener:
    Instead of adding the Listener only on one appliance, you add the listener to the Cluster. This will not break anything on the Non-ISQ Box, as there is no traffic routed to this Machine. And don't forget to add the IP Address of the backup ESA into the Incoming Relays list, otherwise you could break your reputation. :)
    If you have a special IP Address for the ISQ, you can also add this Interface on the second Box with the same name.

    I have several systems configured that way, never had a problem with them. You can't sell centralized management if the first thing you need to do is break the cluster config again ;)
    I can't seem to find #610 anymore but i remember that some older KB articles said to use a message filter like this to send spam received on the QuarantineListener to the spam quarantine:

    Don't use that filter because its broken, you won't be able to release messages from the quarantine anymore. Instead I use something like this:

    The only unfortunate side-effect of hosting the spam quarantine on one box is that the reporting is wrong again. Any message sent this way is logged as a clean message.
    I'm curious about your comment about breaking your reputation. How would this setup affect your reputation? You're not scanning for spam again on the second box, so even if it shares statistics, won't it just report that a lot of clean mail was received from the first box?

    I don't believe the iPhone's backup stores contact information, calendar events, bookmarks, or photos transferred from your computer to your iPhone.
    This data should be in the supported application or applications on your computer.
    The backup stores iPhone settings, SMS messages, notes created with the Notes app, cities tracked with the Weather widget, stocks tracked with the Stocks widget, recent calls, call favorites, alarms, visual voicemail, email account settings, and photos captured by your iPhone.
    Basically the backup stores data not included with the sync process.
