Where to put my wireless configuration commands?

Hi,
I figured out that to load my wireless card I need:
modprobe rt61
ifconfig wlan0 up
iwconfig wlan0 essid ...
iwpriv wlan0 set ...
iwpriv wlan0 set ...
dhcpcd wlan0
Now I wonder what is the best way to save these commands (in some form) in the boot up process or the network loader?
Where shall I put them or what to change in configuration files to make it work?
Anton

If it wasn't for those iwpriv commands, you could use the standard Arch network config. With them, however, you'll need to do something a bit hackier. Are you sure the modprobe is required? Udev should detect the device, and autoload the module.
That aside, you can either put the commands in /etc/rc.local, or you can write a custom wifi init script in /etc/rc.d/ and run it from the DAEMONS array in /etc/rc.conf. Here's one I used (briefly) with the legacy rt73 usb driver - static instead of dhcp, but you get the idea.
Now that the question is answered, I would strongly recommend that you try the rt2x00-cvs driver in the unstable repo. I'm now using it with the same Ralink-based USB device, and it's going well - no iwpriv awkwardness, just a nice clean network profile or two.

  • Out of no where, will not connect wirelessly.

I just purchased a Windows 8 pc. However, I take such good care of my techie things I still have an old Toshiba laptop about 8 years old, maybe a little less that runs just great, it's just the technolgy was getting a little behind. It's the old style "tablet" that has the swivel screen and was considered "heavy" accord to our standards today.
The Toshiba Satellite (circa 2005) laptop is an XP with all the updates and service packs. I keep it lean and clean with Advanced System Care, have for months with no problem. It was always used to connect wirelessly.
About the middle of February I switced from Verizon slow DSL to Comcast because we have no other choice for a faster speed. No FIOS. But, I've come back a full 180 to Verizon. However I did get a new modem, the latest advances. It's a D-Link ADSL2+  (DSL2750B)  Supposed to run 3 to 6 times faster than the old Verizon modem I had. When I first connected to the DSL I turned this laptop on, connected wirelessly and it was there great going! I was even hitting almost the top speed I am provisioned for wireless. The modem is only 2 feet away but still. I turned if off, turned my attention back to the new Windows 8 machine for a day couple of days
Then I wanted to go back and check the Toshiba XP  and revel in it's great performance on this new modem .... drat!!  It detects all local stations, even of course mine, but when I try to connect it tries but fails and jumps to a neighbors DSL. I can however connect with the Ethernet cord.
I've been using this Toshiba Tablet for months with a USB wireless adapter just fine that a friend gave me. In fact either the internal wireless adapter and the USB worked with not a problem but tests seemed to show his gift of the adapter was a little faster, so I use it exclusively.
So neither wireless adapter, internal or USB will connect to my modem. I even tried pressing the WPS button on the modem, the one that's lets someone near log on without a password.
So there it is. Can anyone have a clue why this worked at the first and now won't?  Also, all other pc's, including a netbook with XP and a new small android tablet are connecting no problem. It's the Toshiba laptop alone that for some reason ...
out of no where, will not connect wirelessly. Is there an easy fix than uninstalling drivers?  But why would both adapters get a corrupted driver at the same time?  I hope there is help here.  Thanks so much for reading this and consdering my situation.  Jack  ":-D

Since the computer can connect with the neighbor's router, I don't think there is a problem with wireless connection on the computer. So it has to be some configuration or settings problem with the new modem. I would check the encryption of the new modem. If the computer can see the modem, but not connect, my thinking is that the encryption is blocking the connection. Temporarily disable the encryption on the new modem and see if that makes a difference. If it doesn't, you may want to check the advanced settings on the modem and compare the IP settings on the computers that work versus the one that doesn't.

  • Wireless configuration for HP OfficeJet 6500A plus All-In-One printer on Ubuntu 10.04

I have bought a HP OfficeJet 6500A plus All-In-One printer CN557A, which I want to use with ubuntu 10.04 64-bit as a wireless network printer.
Before i bought i checked compatibility on www.hplipopensource.org and www.openprinting.org, and all was in order.
The machine is autodetected and fully functional when connected with a usb cable, but i have not managed to get it to work as a wireless printer.
    This is what I did:
I configured the printer on the wireless network (through the printer interface), and it connects. It prints out a "Wireless Network Test Report", and everything works. I can ping to its local ip adress, and access it through the browser. HP eprint also works.
I installed hplip 3.11.10 and dependencies manually. I did this because the default hplip in ubuntu 10.04 did not recognise the device.
I ran 'hp-check', which gave no errors or warnings:

    2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
    3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

I then ran 'sudo hp-setup', chose the device (which was detected), chose my wireless network, entered the wireless security key. On the configuration results dialog I get two messages:
"Your printer has been succesfully configured on the wireless network. You may now unplug the USB cable"
    and
"The Ethernet cable is plugged in which will prevent you from connecting to a wireless network. To connect wirelessly, remove the cable and try again. (VSA000)"
There is no ethernet cable plugged in, so i can't remove it. I unplug the USB cable and click 'finish'. This makes the 'hp-setup'-dialog start over again, and the printer has not been installed.
In the terminal i have the following:

A friendly soul on ubuntuforums pointed out to me, that the wireless configuration is only necessary when the printer is NOT connected to a (W)LAN. So all I really had to do was to configure the printer in the CUPS administation page, and it worked. Problem solved. Silly me.

    Hi Matt,
    The problem here is that the AP you received is a Lightweight AP which is meant to be used with Wireless Lan Controllers and WCS. The "LAP" portion of the part number shows this Lightweight designation. This can be converted to an Autonomous/stand-alone AP that you desire;
    Here is a conversion method;
Reverting the Access Point Back to Autonomous Mode
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/wireless/ps430/prod_technical_reference09186a00804fc3dc.html#wp161272
You can convert an access point from lightweight mode back to autonomous mode by loading a Cisco IOS Release that supports autonomous mode (Cisco IOS release 12.3(7)JA or earlier). If the access point is associated to a controller, you can use the controller to load the Cisco IOS release. If the access point is not associated to a controller, you can load the Cisco IOS release using TFTP.
Using a TFTP Server to Return to a Previous Release
Follow these steps to revert from LWAPP mode to autonomous mode by loading a Cisco IOS release using a TFTP server:
Step 1 The static IP address of the PC on which your TFTP server software runs should be between 10.0.0.2 and 10.0.0.30.
Step 2 Make sure that the PC contains the access point image file (such as c1200-k9w7-tar.122-15.JA.tar for a 1200 series access point) in the TFTP server folder and that the TFTP server is activated.
Step 3 Rename the access point image file in the TFTP server folder to c1200-k9w7-tar.default for a 1200 series access point, c1130-k9w7-tar.default for an 1130 series access point, and c1240-k9w7-tar.default for a 1240 series access point.
Step 4 Connect the PC to the access point using a Category 5 (CAT5) Ethernet cable.
Step 5 Disconnect power from the access point.
Step 6 Press and hold MODE while you reconnect power to the access point.
Step 7 Hold the MODE button until the status LED turns red (approximately 20 to 30 seconds) and then release.
Step 8 Wait until the access point reboots, as indicated by all LEDs turning green followed by the Status LED blinking green.
Step 9 After the access point reboots, reconfigure it using the GUI or the CLI.
    From this doc;
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/wireless/ps430/prod_technical_reference09186a00804fc3dc.html#wp161272
    Hope this helps!

Hello there, am new here and very stressed, i have an Imac core i3 which is logging off itself after a few seconds of login, it goes back to the login menu where i put the password. I have tried to repair the os but my pioneer rom is not reading the disk. I press the :c" button on startup but its not picking up the disk in the rom, i have tried to put the disk in an external rom but same answer, am starting to think that my os disk is bad. Please help me.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Where to put my Airdisk/Drobo/Server/Whatever

I am looking for advice in optimizing what I want to do with my external storage to get the most out of... uh, well, out of life. Or something.
In the basement I have a Mac Mini connected to my TV that acts as my Tivo. It uses EyeTV with an external drive connected via Firewire (400). Works great.
Two floors up I have an iMac that acts as my central computer. It is connected, via ethernet cable, to an Airport Extreme base station. The base station is connected to my DSL modem via ethernet cable and to another external drive via USB 2.0. Works pretty well...
So that all laptops and the Mac Mini can access the media, my iTunes library is on the upstairs external drive (the one connected to the Airport). Generally no issue there, but lately I've noticed that movies and shows played from that drive might get jumpy when being watched on TV. I guess that may be because the media goes from the drive through the Airport, through two floors, then into the Mac Mini.
Or maybe it's because the drive was getting ready to fail (it just did).
So now I'm going to get a Drobo so that I never go through replacing a failed drive (and trying to recover it!) again. This is drive #3 for me in 5 years. (No more non-redundancy!) But the question is where to put it.
Should I move the Airport and modem to the basement and connect the Drobo to the Airport? Should I just put it upstairs and chalk the slowness up to a failing drive? Should I connect the Drobo directly to the Mac Mini and share the drive (and will that lead to a new can of worms with the Airport)? And what cable connections should I use? I just learned that the USB bus pretty much handles everything through one place no matter how many ports you have, so I'm guessing I want to limit that...? But I only have 1 Firewire connection on the Mini...
What do you guys think? And if you think there's a better forum to post this message in, let me know.
    Thanks in advance,
    Rick

    Hey CPC Guy,
If at all possible, I'd find a way to set up your modem, router and its connected USB external drives somewhere centrally on the center floor. Then just connect wirelessly to it with the iMac.
One cheap storage solution that I've used to this point is to buy a 7-port USB hub, connect it to the Airport, and then add multiple external USB drives. You can also run a central USB printer from there as well as a ethernet connected network printer if you wanted. I've run something like this for a couple of years. All on a one level home but centralized in it nonetheless. Works great. Wireless speeds are great.
Some of these drives can serve as backup drives for the others, including your computers. I've used SuperDuper to backup over the network. A great source for dual drive enclosures is OWC (www.MacSales.com).
Another solution that I'd recommend over the drobo is an HP Media Smart Windows Home Server. Similar to the drobo, but I think it is a much better, more flexible, cost effective solution. In fact, I'm installing one as I write this. Bought it for $500 with free shipping from Newegg.com. It comes with a 750GB SATA and has three more upgradeable bays. I got the EX485. There is a EX487 and a new smaller one that would work as well. You might compare this with what the drobo has to offer.
There are supposed to have been some conflict with installing via a connected Airport Extreme, but I have not had that problem. The one caveat is that you have to initialize with a windows PC first. I run XP and Vista via VM Fusion so that isn't a problem. Then you can use it fine with a mac.
Also, a friend who does data recovery for a living and is a die hard mac guy swears by Seagate (1) Samsung (2) and Hitachi (3). The highest rate of failures he has seen for many years is WD. I buy these three and I have been fortunate to not have one fail yet. Knock on wood. YMMV.
If you're looking to expand specifically around the mini in the basement, you might try the USB hub approach mentioned above. However, I think if you can centralize all your media on the middle level then streaming distances are much shorter and backups are much easier and faster over cabled connections. I just enclose it all in a small footprint media cabinet.

  • Wireless configuration files

Hi Guys, I have a question about wireless configuration files. I have set my wireless up and I am able to get it working. To do this I have to enter the iwconfig command manually.
    iwconfig eth2 essid GillisLAN
When I do that and restart the network it works fine.  I have read the forum and wiki and have tried many of the suggestions I have found in them. I must be missing something because I cannot get any of the config files to set things up for me. I have posted my the network portion of rc.conf below. I would really like to solve this and need some help.

As far as I know, wpa_supplicant can be setup without encryption.
Here is the Arch wiki page on setting up wpa_supplicant-
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wpa_supplicant
Also take a look here at the WPA supplicant section in the gentoo handbook. It includes helpful examples of different configurations which the Arch documentation doesn't.

  • Mail Icon won't stay in the position in the dock where I put it

I have a very strange happening on my iMac (OSX 10.5.5). The mail icon in my dock won't stay in the position where I put it. After a few seconds, it moves to the last position in the dock (before the dashed line). If my dock is at the bottom of screen, the mail icon moves to right just before the dashed line. If my dock is on the right side of screen, the mail icon moves to the bottom just before the dashed line. Each time I move the mail icon to another position in the dock, it moves back to the last position. Can anyone help me figure this out - so that I can put the mail icon where I want it to appear? Thank you. Dale

first a question for you. are you using Mobileme? I've seen a number of posts with the same problem by people using Mobileme (which i don't have). haven't seen a resolution to this but you might want to check in the mobileme forum. If you are not using mobileme try resetting Dock preferences. delete the file homedirectory/library/preferences/com.apple.dock.plist and restart Dock by running the following terminal command
    killall Dock
This will reset your Dock to the default and hopefully fix the issue.

  • Backing up and restoring wireless configurations

I am getting ready to blow away my iBook and do a fresh install of OS X. I use my iBook in a variety of different areas and have it setup on several WEP and WPA protected networks. Basically, I'd like to be able to backup my wireless configurations and restore them once I reinstall the OS.

I would assume it's the com.apple.airport.plist in you user Library>Preferences folder (network locations/preferences are user specific). Drag it to the desktop and restart Airport. Are your various locations there? No? Then that's it.

  • I changed my iPhone lately but i can't restore my last backup since it keeps saying "itunes could not restore backup because the password was incorrect" but I don't know where to put the password to make it happen... Any suggestions?

    Hey guys,
I just bought a new iPhone but i can't restore my backup files beacuse it keeps saying "itunes could not restore backup because the password was incorrect" but I really don't know where to put the password to restore it. I really have some files that are meaningful for me so I really need help. Any suggestions anyone?

Select your iDevice in the iTunes.
Choose the Summary screen (tab) and scroll to the bottom of the screen.
    Then un-select Encrypt iPhone backup.
iTunes will then prompt you to “Enter the password to unlock your iPhone backup”, enter the password you set originally.

  • My computer screen keeps going blank and then going back to the box where I put my password in to start my comp. Why is this happening?

My computer (Macbook) was working fine this am. I left it for an hour and then came back and the screen was black (always does that as the screensaver hardly ever works). I moved the mouse to wake it up and everything was normal. I went to adjust the volume and the screen went blank and the main page with the box where I put my password in when I first start my comp appeared. I put my password in and everything was normal again. I opened a window in Safari and before it loaded completely the same thing happened, the screen went blank and went back to the password box. Does anyone know why this is happening? I don't have an external hard drive or any blank flash drives so I can't back anything up right now and am afraid I'm going to lose everything. Thank you

Sounds like hardware failure, called boot loop. Call Apple and or go on apple.com and make Genius Bar appointment to have your iphone reviewed by a Tech. Provided you iphone shows no physical or liquid damage they will take care of you, or if you have Apple Care Plus
