Which Desktop to Buy for Solaris 8 ???

Hi,
Recently I bought a Dell Dimension 4100 system and found out that Solaris 8 does not install on that because of some acpi problems.
Now I am returning the system and planning to buy another one.
Can somebody tell me which system to buy so that I am able to sucessfully install Solaris 8 on it.
I checked the Hardware Compatibality list but it either lists expensive servers or outdated desktops which the manufacturers no longer sell.
I am looking to buy a P3 atleast with 1GHz Clock Speed.
If somebody knows then please let me know.

I recommend you stay away from the 21.5" iMac and Mac mini because they cannot be upgraded. Upgrading the 27" iMac's memory when you need the extra RAM will be less expensive than maxing out the RAM now and less expensive than replacing the computer a couple years from now. The retina iMac is beautiful but in your work how many times have you felt your 2007 iMac lacked pixels? Maybe you'd benefit from it, maybe not. When it comes to the difference between displays I've always recommended people sit down in front of them and see. Looking at the specs, my wife's display looks like a winner. She loves using it, I hate it. Displays are a very personal choice.

You can use the same Apple ID for both phones, you would then be able to use the purchased Apps/Content on both phones without having to pay again.

After reopening Firefox does not remember which desktop was used for each window. Can you help, please.

I'm using two displays and several desktops on my Mac (OS X 10.9.4).
When I need to restart Firefox, it remembers to open windows from last session in correct display, but does not remember which desktop was used for each window. So when the application starts, it opens all windows on a desktop which is currently active instead of reopening them on desktops used during the last session. How to fix the issue?

Thank you for your question, there is a add on I have been recommended to custom set up of opening windows in new monitors. It's called [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/monitor-master/ Monitor Master].
However, in regards to the session remembering which monitor the window was open in, in the profile folder there is a file that stores window positions and dimensions. It is called localstore.rdf.
Please stay tuned for more investigation, as there are definitely bugs on file for similar issues. Pinpointing it is the hard part.

Advice needed on which processor to buy for a Mega PC Pro

Hello all, just registered,
Could anyone recommend which processor I should buy for the MEGA PC 865 Pro I just ordered? I can see a Intel Pentium 4 630 3 Ghz Socket 775 800Mhz 2mb Retail Boxed on Ebuyer for £124 which is my price range but I'm not sure why it's good. The only criteria I have is that I will be doing video editing and I want my PC to stay quiet so I suppose there will be a trade-off somewhere. I'm confused about why there are so many processors with so little apparent difference between the.
Also is Windows XP really the best software for a Pentuim 4? I prefer Windows 2000 but I read that XP takes advantage of Hyperthreading. BUt will I really notice any difference?

the 865PRO is a slightly different kettle of fish
Win2K should work with no problems, not sure about the hyperthreading though, MSI just say that they only support customers with WinXP though; you can still get drivers for Win2K though
having said that, Win2K and WinXP are still very much the same. if its the graphical look of WinXP you don't like, you can always set it to the "Classic" look, and it looks and feels like Win2K anyway

HELP!! I need to know which desktop to buy that's good for the money!!

My husband and I are going to buy a desktop. I've tried looking on the web to find consumer reports...but I'm still not sure what to get. All we need it for is mainly web browsing and we want it to be FAST...pics and media mean a great deal too though! We can't stand a slow PC!! Gaming, stuff like that, we don't care anything about. Hey there! If you are looking for a good desktop that will meet your needs, I would suggest taking a look at desktops by Asus. They have good parts and won't let you down. This desktop is particularly great at providing the features you need without the fluff, and right now it's on sale. You can find it at most BBY stores, too.
What makes that computer good is that it has a first generation i5 processor. There are new processors out now, but they're still finding their market. The i5 is a processor strapped to a rocket. It's fast, effective and can handle just about anything you throw at it. Its speed scales with your use, so if you are using the computer for a heavy task it will speed up to accommodate you. That computer also has 6 gigs of memory, which is great (I always hear my customers saying "More gigabytes!") for doing just about anything, too. Your internet browsing sessions won't slow down. For the hard drive, you get a little overkill -- a 1 terabyte hard drive. That's a lot of storage, but you can download and save movies, pictures and just about anything and not have to worry about running out of space for quite some time. The hard drive itself is fast as well, spinning at 7200 revolutions per minute rather than the subpar 5400 revolutions per minute. So you get fast access times to everything, and your computer will turn on quicker. You also get a ton of data card slots on the front and plenty of USB port access.
In terms of price for features, this is currently a good deal. A full-blown desktop complete with an operating system and case with data card slots, a fast hard drive and an ample cpu is hard to find for cheap anymore. I am certain you could build your own for about the same price, but it probably wouldn't be as fast as this.
Overall, Asus makes fantastic hardware that is often the enthusiasts choice. I would ignore the 11 reviews completely, as there are more than 11 people in the world who probably have purchased this desktop. Remember, people who are given a reason to rant will.

Need help on which router to buy for my BB 8320

Now i know 8320 is dated but at this point i am not planning to change anytime soon .
So I have a router which is kinda old, it didnt really occur to me since it worked. When i got my bb 8320 i was in a hotel and i could connect through their wireless without any hassle. I could surf, use youtube, name it.
When i got home i couldnt do anything, i spent countless nights trying to figure out waht was wrong then i realized its my router. If only BB said somethign it wont support old routers then i wouldve saved myself hours of self-loathing.
Anyways I also have gone to my friends house, and i could connect to her linksys router without any hassle. i was the one who set her router up and we bought it this year. i didnt do anything special, configuration-wise or w/e.

Which notebook to buy for bad eyesight

I am thinking of purchasing a notebook but I am really unsure as to which one. I hope that somebody can advise me.
Yesterday, I visited an Apple store and was advised by a sales rep, that what I required for my needs (internet browsing, storing photos, accessing and editing my website which is located on MS 365) was a Macbook Air not a Macbook Pro
The Macbook Air did look lovely but I have dreadful eyesight and I really struggled to see the address bar. Apparently, you can't really adjust the size of the url in the address bar and I have a feeling that I would really struggle with this. The sales person was insistent that was the best things for my requirements and I am sure that he is right but I am very hesitant in purchasing because of the screen size. My existing laptop has a screen size of 15.6-inch high definition LED panel with a 16:9 aspect ratio display and I find this to be perfect for my not so good eyesight.
Is it a question of getting used to the smaller size or should I go for a more powerful/expensive machine instead?

Apple Store people are told to push a particular line or model if sales for it are down, people don't want it, or Apple makes more profit on those machines or that's the future direction Apple want's to go with hardware and thus forcing their users into compliance.
Apple has long ago stopped listening to users needs for hardware and fired all their professional salespeople who would advise the proper machines for their users.

I also suffer from poor eyesight and got myself one of the last anti-glare screen 17" MacBook Pro's before Apple removed them from their product line.
We suspect they did so because there are no "Retina" panels at the 17" size, however it's 1920 x 1200 17" screen worked better for those with hard of seeing issues and for mobile video production uses.
Is it a question of getting used to the smaller size or should I go for a more powerful/expensive machine instead?
Don't buy or use a piece of hardware that is going to make you uncomfortable or do further injury to your eyes, causing eye strain, headaches and neck pain, its simply not worth using a Apple product if they refuse to produce something to fit your needs.
If you feel the 15" MacBook Pro is right for you, then get it. Don't let some young or brainwashed salesperson who has good eyesight tell you what you should or should not use.
Now I have some information for you to consider.
1: OS X does NOT have any ability to scale the operating system user interface elements to accommodate hard of seeing users. The resolution can be lowered, however this causes the type and screen elements to become blurry. One can "zoom" in and out, but it's not a permanent scale up and things go off the screen.
However Windows 7 does include a option to scale the operating system UI up to 150%, and one can greatly increase the icons and other factors.
2: Apple doesn't produce the 17" laptop any more and this screen size is more ideal for those with seeing issues, because to scale up the operating system UI you obviously need more screen real estate so everything fits on the screen and your not scrolling around all the time to see stuff that went off the edges.
3: Glossy screens. These are made by many computer makers who desire a fancy "oh shiny" look to their computers to sell hardware. This has been known to cause serious eyestrain
Apple does this as well, in fact diffuses the lights in their stores as to reduce the on screen glare, but it's a whole different story when one takes these machines home, at the office or on the bus or outside, where one can't control the lighting.
Apple still offers a anti-glare 15" MacBook Pro (non-Retina) at least on their online store.
Unfortunately it's also "high resolution" meaning the UI elements are going to be even smaller than on the glossy displays.
So what to do?
Ideally you should get either a Mac Mini or a Mac Pro and connect a third party large screen anti-glare high res-display and drop the resolution down so everything looks nice and big, but it's not portable.
If the 15" MacBook Pro seems like the right fit, then get that, but be aware there is a anti-glare option and if they have it in the stores, check it out to see if it's more easier on the eyes for you.
If you need to specifically use a laptop and the OS X UI elements are too small, you might try looking at getting a 17" high res (1980 x 1200+) anti-glare or "matte screen" Windows 7 or Windows 8 Pro computer instead.
PC hardware vendors make a huge range of hardware, also Windows 8 Pro can be downgraded to Windows 7, Windows 7 is supported until 2020. Apple changes OS X every year now.
For hard of seeing users I often recommend this solution now that Apple has pulled their 17" and almost depleted all their anti-glare models.
Apple likes to cater to the young and with good eyesight, Microsoft is a little more forgiving and PC vendors offer a much larger range of hardware choices than Apple can.
I hope you find relief, and if you do decide to get a Mac, this User Tip here will help you be able to surf easier.

Which Mac to Buy for Use with Logic?

I'm currently looking to buy a new Mac and am torn between the iMac and Macbook Pro. iMac is definitely in my price range more than the Macbook.
I'm looking to do basic video editing and audio recording (15 tracks at most) most likely using an Apogee Duet as an audio in - mostly recording 1 or 2 tracks and adding more. I would be buying Logic.
Do you think the iMac would do the trick?

i would be you and if you can afford go for the macpro (2008 the 2009 seems to have some incompatilities cf. other thread). By experience allow yourself to have some margin, i mean more cpu power (one day you will maybe use heavy plugins or synth instruments from 3th party software) and this is killing the cpu. So more is always better. It takes me more than 6 months (start last year) to setup my macpro to a stable stage and now i am so happy it can runs without any big problem everything i want. (ex i use superior 2 as an internal synth instrument in Logic (not as standalone, to have the maximum control within logic, and i load it as multitrack instrument, it taxes 40 % of a single core - and because of synth instrument, only one core will function, and i can record without problem 2 guitarists (using GTR3.5), the drummer on a e-drum superior 2.0, a bassist with gtr3.5 and a vocal with buss reverb, in low latency mode - buffer 128- the cpu core reach about 80 %, without soft instrument than you have almost no limit cause all your core will be actifs, i mean recording just audio.).

Windows 7 - which version to buy for Premiere Pro 5.5?

Ive had a quick scout about but I cant seem to find a definitive answer to the question of which version of 64 bit Windows 7 is the best option for Premiere Pro? I didnt want to waste money by purchasing Ultimate only to 'tune' out most of the services - ala black viper's 'barebones' setup, to get the best from my limited hardware setup
I am bulding the following simple system for a Non internet connected workstation for exclusive SD editing purposes, amd 64, 8Gb, GTX550 TI, 160 Gb Velociraptor primary drive, 2 Tb Assets drive and a 1 Tb output drive. I will be running production premium.

Win7 Home Premium is enough, but if you ever consider upping memory beyond 16 GB or using network services for a home network or backing up to a NAS, then you are better off with Win7 Pro. The price difference is small, so Pro looks like the better, more future proof option.

Which MacBook to buy for using iMovie

I would like to purchase a new 15" MacBook Pro and am wondering if I should get the more expensive one with the Nvidia Graphics Card or without. I like to do a lot of video editing on iMovie and have thousands and thousands of photos on iPhoto that I like to edit.
Do I need the Nvidia graphics card or should I get the standard 15" model and up the memory/processor/hard drive?

iMovie works just fine on my 13" MacBook Pro (early 2013 2.6GHz, 8GB RAM) and it doesn't even have descrete graphics.
I think it's fair to say, any MacBook Pro is going to run iMovie just fine.
You certainly don't need the NVIDIA card for iMovie.
I'd consider getting an external hard drive too.

Which Thinkpad to buy for gaming/video editing?

I'm not sure if this is the right place, I am new to this forum, so forgive me if its not.
I have a friend who has a Thinkpad T500 and I feel it would suit my needs. I want a laptop that can handle running multiple programs, gaming, video editing, etc.. I am not sure which model is a good one to go with. I want some feature like the "think light" and the navigation button (red button in the middle of the keyboard). Basically I would like the features of the Thinkpad T500, but with a budget of $800. So any advice from all you lenovo people out there would be greatly appreciated.

most of the thinkpads have the thinklight except X series Tablets, maybe the SL/L series, and X series 100e?
All thinkpads have the red trackpoint.
Have you tested your friend's laptop and see how it runs the programs you want? gaming maybe slightly difficult on the thinkpads, unless you get the W series laptop, since the GPU may not be up to the task.
800 dollars isn't how lot of money if you want a specced out Thinkpads.

If you need more GPU oomph get a DIY Vidock later on, then get the ATI 4770, but you can only run the games on external LCD. But it should run most of the later games on medium settings with little problems.

Which monitor to buy for the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro w/256MB?

Has anyone successfully hooked an LCD through the DVI port at a resolution other than the 1920x1200 max resolution stated on the ATI box? Would a native resolution of 1680x1050 work with this card?
I was thinking about getting the Gateway FPD2185W monitor. Has anyone else had good results with this monitor?

I have settled on the Gateway FPD2185W. This is a great 21" widescreen, and the ATI card handles the pivot capability very nicely. It's not automatic like on a PC but it does work.
