Which is better: Oracle incremental update (merge) or Oracle incremental update

Hi All,
We have big data load happening from Oracle RDBMS(source) to Oracle RDBMS(target). The data is huge (in billions) and new insertions, updates will happen. I would like to understand which among
Oracle incremental update (merge) or Oracle incremental update is better and faster -  for first load and subsequent incremental updates, deletes? I request you all to provide valid reasons since I need to present the same to my client
If at all Oracle incremental update (merge) is better, then why ODI needs to have Oracle incremental update IKM.
I have seen some discussions on the same topic but I have not yet got a proper response with reasons and that is why I am posting the question again
Thanks & Regards,
Sijee Sadasivan

Hi Sijee Sadasivan,
IKM SQL Control Append could be faster for the initial load. You will therefore need another interface for the initial load.
From my experience IKM Oracle Incremental Update (Merge) is faster than IKM Oracle Incremental Update for the incremental load, but I think the best thing to do is to try it on your environment. Nothing is better than a benchmark .
IKM Oracle Incremental Update is useful for Oracle RDBMS < 9i, before this syntax was introduced.

  • Which is better to install Oracle 11g database based on ASM or Filesystem

We will install 2 sets of Oracle 11.2.0.3 on Redhat Linix 5.6 and configure Data Guard for them further -- one will be a primary DB server, the other will be a physical standby DB server. The Oracle DB stoage is based on SAN Array Disk with 6TB size. Now there are two options to manage the DB datafiles:
    1. Install Oracle ASM
    2. Create the tranditional OS filesystem
Which is better? in the past, our 10g data guard environment is not based on Oracle ASM.
Someone think if we adopt the oracle ASM, the shortcomings are :
    1. as there is one more instance that will consume more memory and resource.
    2. as the ASM file system cannot be shown out on the OS level directly such as "df" command, the disk utilization monitor job will be more difficult. at least it cannot be supervised at OS level.
    3. as the DB bshoule be done the daily incremental backup (Mon-Sat) to Local Backup Drive. the bakup job must be done by RMAN rather than user-managed script.
Who can provide some advices? Thanks very much in advance.

Which is better? in the past, our 10g data guard environment is not based on Oracle ASM. ASM provides a host of new features ito data management, and performance - to the extent that you can rip out the entire existing storage system, replace it with a brand new storage system, without a single second of database downtime.
Someone think if we adopt the oracle ASM, the shortcomings are :
    1. as there is one more instance that will consume more memory and resource. Not really relevant on 64bit h/w architecture that removes limitations such a 4GB of addressable memory. On the CPU side... heck, my game PC at home has a 8 core 64bit CPU. Single die and dual core CPUs belong to the distant past.
Arguing that an ASM instance has overheads would be silly. And totally ignores the wide range of real and tangible benefits that ASM provides.
    2. as the ASM file system cannot be shown out on the OS level directly such as "df" command, the disk utilization monitor job will be more difficult. at least it cannot be supervised at OS level. That is a A Very Good Thing (tm). Managing database storage from o/s level is flawed in many ways.

    rman supports ASM fully.
I have stopped using cooked file systems for Oracle - I prefer ASM first and foremost. The only exceptions are tiny servers with a single root disk that needs to be used for kernel, database s/w, and database datafiles. (currently these are mostly Oracle XE systems in my case, and configured that way as XE does not support ASM and is used as a pure cost decision).

    Description:
    - Loading Knowledge Module
    - Loads data from an Oracle Server to an Oracle Server using external tables in the datapump format.
    - This module is recommended when developing interfaces between two Oracle servers when DBLINK is not an option.

  • Which is better?    Two Oracle user in one instance OR  in two instances?

    Which is better?
I could not find any benchmark for number of instances per user
    in the same machine.
suppose that you have two major Oracle user, from performance
point of view it is better to make separate instances in same
machine or keep these two users in the same instance.

    Hi.
I understand that you will use oracle for two different
    applications on the same host.
Each instance has its SGA and background processes. So, using
two different schemas(users) in one instance you can share
phisical memory between the applications. Concerning background
processes, you can start as many of them as you wish, so it's
not a problem. If you decided that one DBW is not enough, you
could configure oracle to use two or more.

  • Which is better for User Managed Hot backup - running in cron or oracle scheduler

We are taking hot backup in our environment by using sql script of just begin backup, host copy and end backup
Can we use this script to be put in cron for weekly two times or to use oracle scheduler .
Which is better option and why?

The answer to your question depens on your condition. Do you have more experienced Unix admin or DBA?
From my point of view cron is better becuase all you need is SQL*Plus utility and shell script:
    export ORACLE_SID=...
    sqlplus <username>/<password> as sysdba <<EOF
    ALTER TABLESPACE .. BEGIN BACKUP;
    host copy ..
    ALTER TABLESPACE .. END BACKUP;

I am stuck with this, and cannot figure out since I am new to SQL Queries and Stored Procedures. Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi sid_siv,
Only the first record is inserted because of the scalar variables of the stored procedure(SP), when you call the SP, only one row is passed. To get all rows inserted, you can either declare a
    table-valued parameter
(TVP) for the SP or using an Oracle linked server in the SP.
Create a stored procedure with a table-valued parameter
As you mentioned linked server is not good in your case, then TVP SP can be the only option. Regarding how to call a SP with TVP parameter in BizTalk, that's a typically BizTalk question then. I would suggest you post your question in a dedicated
BizTalk Server forum. It is more appropriate and more experts will assist you.
If you have any question, feel free to let me know.

  • Triggers or Programs, which is better?

    Hello,
I have a simple question, say, I have 40Mil records to process or even higher and which is better, to have the functions in a program that reads the database or as a database triggers with functions?
How good is Oracle to process 200Mil records or more?
    Thanks.
    -Nair

I couldn't understand your problem. Anyway a trigger is attached to the table, so whenever you have an action updating a table the trigger automatically fires. On the other hand a program or function is an outer entity and must be loaded and run to make process whatever request/modification to your table.
Oracle databse is capable of working with very large volumes of data. Refer to the manuls to get accurate info.

  • SQL Loader or UTL_FILE , Which is better ??

    Hello All,
In my system I have to Download the data from a file each day in some table.
The file is of fixed format. And the number of records (lines) in the file is not more than 1000 (say) each day.
I would like to know for such scenario what will be better to use, SQL Loader or UTL_FILE package to read the file?
DB - Oracle Database 10g on Linux platform.
    Thanks & Regards,

Subject: Re: SQL Loader or UTL_FILE , Which is better ??
    Hey,
My control file 'ATTENDANCE.ctl' is as follows
    load data
    infile 'C:\DATA\06012007.CAP'
    badfile 'C:\DATA\atncap.bad'
    append
    into table NIS.atncap
    COMP_CODE constant 'SP',
    TXN_SRNO sequence(max,1),
    TXN_DATE POSITION(05:12) date 'MM/DD/YYYY' ,
    TXN_ATDATE POSITION(05:16) date 'MM/DD/YYYY HH24:MI',
    TXN_EMPL POSITION(17:24) INTEGER EXTERNAL,
    TXN_TIME POSITION(13:16) ,
    CREATED_BY constant '---',
    CREATED_DT sysdate,
    MODIFIED_BY constant '---',
    MODIFIED_DT sysdate,
    TXN_FILE POSITION(05:12) INTEGER EXTERNAL,
    TXN_INOUT POSITION(26:26) INTEGER EXTERNAL
and sample data from my file which is to be loaded is
    CC000601200707300025831201FF09D071
    CC000601200708330025836601FF09D17F

    CC000601200719100025836601FF09D47B
which contains some flags, date, in/out times, employee code etc. and the positions of all the fields is fixed. The file is generated on daily basis with system date as the file name.
i.e. above data is from file '06012007.CAP'. We can easily see the date field is at positions 05 to 12 in the file.
So, for this purpose each time I have to update the control file for 'infile' parameter.
Thats what I said in my second post.

  • Which oracle client works with both Oracle 11.2.0.2 and BizTalk 2006 R2

    Hi there
My Oracle11.2.0.2 is installed on linux server. My Biztalk2006R2 is installed on Windows Server 2003 R2 x64. I have already installed BizTalk Adapter for Oracle on the Biztalk server and now require to install Oracle Client to make Biztalk able to retrieve data from Oracle11.2.0.2 using the oracle client.
    From the following link,
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa559822%28v=BTS.20%29.aspx
I came to know that the only oracle clients compatible with Biztalk adapter for oracle are as below:
    1) Oracle client 8i
    2) oracle client 9i
    3) oracle client 10i
Now I need to install an oracle client on biztalk server in order to make biztalk talk to oracle and retrieve data from it.
Question1: which of the above clients should i install on biztalk server that is compatible with both Oracle11.2.0.2 as well as Biztalk server 2006 R2?
Question2: How to install and configure this client to make it work correctly?
    Please help.. thanks.

The Biztalk Adapter interface with Oracle software has information, requirements per referenced document that does not make sense.
E.g. "10i" does not exist and the requirement "Oracle ODBC driver 9.2.0.5.4" means that only 9.2 Client can be used. (Mixing parts from one Database Client product version with another version is not allowed/supported/certified.)
Btw, does that machine happen to have Itanium hardware? (probably no, since you stated x64)
For Oracle's OS requirements, 2003 was certified with/from 9.2.0.3 (and likely also terminal patch set version 9.2.0.8). Not sure about Server 2003 R2, 32 or 64-bit. I'm pretty sure 10.2 was certified on 2003 R2, but the note likely refers to 10.1 versions (before it was known it would be labeled 10g, g for grid replacing the i ).
This FAQ may have some more information: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/windows/faq-100614.html
For Oracle client - server interoperability and certification, there's a support matrix on MOS. See doc id 207303.1.
It seems 9.2 is supported on the wire to operate with 11.2 server, but Client with at least patch set 9.2.0.4 is required.
So, I guess best bet is to find updated requirements.
If you manage to get hold of 9.2.0.5, after verifying that 2003 R2 is ok, then it looks like the puzzle could be put together for a complete picture.
For ease of install, take a look at the Instant Client. (However, there's no 9.2 IC, that type of client install came later)
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/features/instant-client/index-097480.html
    Edit;
some corrections, specially about 9.2 version

  • Problem installing Oracle Linux Release 5 Update 2 from Oracle e-Delivery

    Hello
I have been trying to install Oracle Linux Release 5 Update 2 from Oracle e-Delivery so that I can install Oracle 11g express edition beta.
Here are the steps that I took and the problem that I am having:
    1. I downloaded the file, unzipped the file twice, which gave me 3,042 files and 13 folders with the total size = 3.07 GB.
    2. I put in the DVD and restarted my PC hoping that my PC will boot from the DVD, but instead Window started.
I reported this issue to tech support from e-Delivery, but they referred me to contact you. Please assist.

3,042 files and 13 folders with the total size = 3.07 GBWhich download .zip did you choose from edelivery? Under linux-x64 I peeked "Oracle Linux Release 5 Update 2 for x86_64 (64 Bit) - DVD" file V15099-01.zip downloaded, it has just the one .iso file. You'll need to burn that to DVD, but with burn s/w that handles ISO files.
Also keep in mind you'll need 64 bit hardware (amd/intel 64? itanium? those are different), the only *nix platform I've got handy to try it out is -x86 :(

  • Difference in select for update of - in Oracle Database 10g and 11g

Hi, I found out that Oracle Database 10g and 11g treat the following PL/SQL block differently (I am using scott schema for convenience):
    DECLARE
      v_ename bonus.ename%TYPE;
    BEGIN
      SELECT b.ename
        INTO v_ename
        FROM bonus b
        JOIN emp e ON b.ename = e.ename
        JOIN dept d ON d.deptno = e.deptno
       WHERE b.ename = 'Scott'
         FOR UPDATE OF b.ename;
    END;
/While in 10g (10.2) this code ends successfully (well NO_DATA_FOUND exception is raised but that is expected), in 11g (11.2) it raises exception "column ambiguously defined". And that is definitely not expected. It seems like it does not take into account table alias because I found out that when I change the column in FOR UPDATE OF e.empno (also does not work) to e.mgr (which is unique) it starts working. So is this some error in 11g? Any thoughts?

It seems that my question was answered here - http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2736426/difference-in-select-for-update-of-in-oracle-database-10g-and-11g

The behaviour seems like it really is a bug and can be avoided using non-ANSI syntax. (It makes me wonder why Oracle maintains two query languages while dumb me thinks that this is just a preprocessor matter and query engine could be the same).

  • Linux on Primary Or Logical? which is better?? and why?

    hello,
what is the best way to install linux ( redhat, oracle enterprise ,etc)
on primary partition or logical partition ? and why?
    i have 3 hd's ( hda,hdb,hdc) >> ( 40 GB,80GB,320GB) IDE
why im asking this becoz i installed linux more than 3 times lately and i always ended up with GRUB errors and problems
any idea plz shed some light on this
need your experience regarding the optimal solution to install linux along with Windows OS
    thanks and regards,

    Hi,
Q: what is the best way to install Linux ( redhat, oracle enterprise ,etc)
A: Almost no difference between Redhat and Oracle Enterprise Linux. But Oracle has patched some additional patches for Oracle database based on Redhat released Enterprise Linux. If you would have subscribed Oracle Unbreakable Linux Network(ULN), which make it easier to update the system and deploy Oracle database. For more details refer to http://linux.oracle.com
Q: On primary partition or logical partition ? and why?
A: Your boot partition ought to be a primary partition, not a logical partition. So if you want to boot your operating system from the drive you are about to partition, it should be installed on primary partition. Otherwise, you can install it on logical partition.
Q: why im asking this becoz i installed linux more than 3 times lately and i always ended up with GRUB errors and problems
A: For this issue, what kind of GRUB error had you experienced? What the result after re-installing the grub?

  • Which is better for performance Azure SQL Database or SQL Server in Azure VM?

    Hi,
We are building an ASP.NET app that will be running on Microsoft Cloud which I think is the new name for Windows Azure. We're expecting this app to have many simultaneous users and want to make sure that we provide excellent performance to end users.
    Here are our main concerns/desires:
Performance is paramount. Fast response times are very very important
We want to have as little to do with platform maintenance as possible e.g. managing OS or SQL Server updates, etc.
We are trying to use "out-of-the-box" standard features.
With that said, which option would give us the best possible database performance: a SQL Server instance running in a VM on Azure or SQL Server Database as a fully managed service?
    Thanks, Sam

    hello,
SQL Database using shared resources on the Microsft data centre. Microsoft balance the resource usage of SQL Database so that no one application continuously dominates any resource. You can try the
    Premium Preview
for Windows Azure SQL Database which offers better performance by guaranteeing a fixed amount of dedicated resources for a database.
If you using SQL Server instance running in a VM, you control the operating system and database configuration. And the
performance of the database depends on many factors such as the size of a virtual machine, and the configuration of the data disks.

  • Which is better an android or apple

Which is better getting an android smart phone or an Apple I Phone?

As the poster Horses 547 said its a matter of personal preference. However I own and use both. Printing via air print is smooth and easy on an iphone. Printing on a android phone is iffy and tedious and you will have to find an app to print since there is no native app to do so. I purchased http://www.printhand.com which costs around $12 from the app store. but it is in my opinion the best printing app out there for android. I use it on my android tablet as well and its great. This company is the maker of the print app on iphones.
The iphone is a little harder to put your own ringtone on the device. However very easy from the Itunes you put on your computer and hook into.
Another thing an iphone does is if you use their cloud service or pay for a song it is available on all your ios devices. Iphone, ipad, or ipod or up to five computers registered through itunes on those computers.
Google play music also can sync with all your android devices.
Iphone don't have external Micro SD card slots, so the storage on the phone is all you have.
Iphones use imessage which does not count against your text allotment  to another iphone or ipad user. it send regular text to non iphone users.
Another thing is Face Time but I found a better program called oovoo at http://www.oovoo.com or in the Google Play Store for free.
Iphones are paper thin but I have an android that has a larger view area and is also paper thin and light. Depending on the android phone it may have a removable battery, whereas iphones are sealed as are some new androids. I have found the sound for music better on my iphone, and videos are crystal clear. Again on some better androids the music and video is comparable .
There is really not many differences but it up to the user.
One last good thing is iphones are updated via Apple, no long waits for OS updates like is done with Android devices, and android devices on Verizon.
