While loop in for loop

hello,
i have a problem with the following:
it starts and doesnt end. only the first "m" and "b" gets inside the while loop. afer "=" there is false. Why is this while loop standing still?

You could also make it without a while loop:
One thing to note about the above code. If the input arrays are not the same size the loop will only run a number of times equal to the length of the shortest array. If an empty array was input the loop would not run.

• While loop and for loop condition terminal

Hello friends,
I am using labview 8.6. The condition terminal of the while loop and conditional for loop is behaving in just the opposite way.
When i wire a true to the condition terminal of my loop, the while loop continues to run when I click on run. when I wire a FALSE, it stops.
Is there any setting change that I have to make it to get it work properly.
Please suggest on this.
Thanks and regards,

I am sending you the VI. I am not sure if this would help you because only in 2 computers this behaviour is seen. In others, it works as it is supposed to work.
Whatever you are seeing must be due to some corruption or folding error. It all works fine here.
To make sure there are no hidden objects, simply press the cleanup button which would reveal any extra stuff (which is obviously not there). Does it fix itself if you click the termination terminal an even number of times? What if you remove the bad loop and create a new one?
Could it be you have some problems with the graphics card and the icon of the conditional terminal does not update correctly?
Whay happens if you connect a control instead of a diagram constant?

• Removing Items While Using New For Loop

Consider this:
ArrayList<String> a = new ArrayList<String>();
... add some stuff ...
for(String s : a) {
// Do some stuff
if(some_condition) {
a.remove(s);
This will cause a ConcurentModificationException the a.remove(s) is ever run. Is there anyway to call the iterator.remove() method instead? The new syntax is much cleaner, and I'd like to use it, but I need to be able to call iterator.remove()
Anyone?

I think the code should iterate through a, putting
references to objects in an auxillary array and then
the loop will go through the auxilary array rather
than the original data structure. This perfectly
reasonable, but different implementation results in
drastically different results (the example above would
work fine). I see this as an issue of these general
language features being defined to close to the metal.
Their semantics are defined by their implementation
not by a sound language design decision that is
agnostic to different implementations.The enhanced for loop is defined in terms of java.lang.Iterable, a very simple interface, which can be implemented in many different ways. You can't get much farther from the metal. The concurrent modification exception is a feature of particular implementations of that interface. If you don't like those implementations, use others that behave differently. For example, you could use one of the CopyOnWrite collections implementations in java.util.concurrent, which never throw a concurrent modification exception. Your suggestion to copy the elements into an array is one (inefficient) implementation mechanism for such collections.

• Cursor for loop in PlSql

while i was studying about cursor for loop i found this statement in the web
"A cursor FOR loop implicitly declares its loop index as a %ROWTYPE record"
for example an emp table contain following columns empno,ename,sal,hiredate,deptno
and let us consider an cursor for loop as
for rec in select empno,sal from emp loop
if cursor for loop declare loop index as a %rowtype our cursor statement should include all the columns and follow the data type compatabulity.
But here our cursor statement includes only few columns,if we use %rowtype we have to select all columns but here we are not doing this.
Can anyone please explain what is happening in cursor for loop?

for loop cursor is also like the simple explicite cursor..
the cursor variable will hold only the columns that are given in select statement of the cursor..
if u declare a cursor as %rowtype, then it should include all the columns of that particular table..
otherwise u should use only %type for each and every column seperately only...

Hi Hookso,
You can do it using the different loops like While loop and For Loop. Roderic has already stated how to do it using a for loop. I have illustrated in the attached vi how to do it using a while loop and Elapsed Time function. Take a look.

• Create multiple VIs using a for loop

Hi,
I'm still pretty new to LabVIEW, so this question might be easy for you guys here..
I'll simplify what I'm trying to do.
I've got two numeric controllers that act as the rows and columns of a matrix.
I'd like to take those numbers from these two controllers and use them to create a matrix of a certain picture.
Example:
The rows controller is given 3, and the columns controller is given 4.
Using these numbers I would like the end result to show a certain image (let's say, a cube) multiplied on a 3 by 4 matrix.
Let's say the picture is an X, then the end result should be:
XXXX
XXXX
XXXX
I think I should be using a double for loop (one inside the other obviously), and I should also create the "position" property in order to display each picture of the cube in it's right place.
The problem is that I don't know how to CREATE the pictures over and over again, while being able to control each one's position property.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!
Solved!
Go to Solution.

1) By "multiple VIs" I meant that I think that I need to create express VIs on the fly while running the for loop. I might be totally wrong here.
2) Yes, by "numeric controllers" I meant numeric controls in the front panel.
3) The matrix I'm referring too isn't an object nor a VI in LabVIEW but a virtual matrix that is the end result. I used the term "matrix" because the end result is actually a matrix (of rows and columns) of pictures..
I'll try to elaborate and even simplify it more:
Let's say I want to display one picture. That's easy, no problem there.
Now let's say that I'd like to display n pictures on a one dimensional array. Just one row.
What I think I need to do is to read from the numeric control in the front panel the number (n) of pictures, and then create them in a for loop, while using the "position" property to set the distance between each picture (using coordinates).
My original question was just like the above, but for a two dimensional matrix/array. So I guess we can even simplify it even more, by saying it's only one dimensional.
My way of action here might be totally wrong, and there might be an easier way or another way to go about this...
Thanks for the quick answer!!

• Initializing variables inside for-loop?

Dear all,
It's been a while since I last programmed in Java, and my skills seem to be a bit rusty.
I have a question for you here: suppose I need to initialize n (let's say 10) different integers, I suppose I couldn't use something like this:
for(int i = 0; i < 10; i++){
int <¿VALUE?> = i;
}Is there a way to dynamically initialize <VALUE>, for instance something like ("integer" + i)? (integer0=0, integer1=1, integer2=2, etc.)
Thank you,
Maarten

You need to declare the arrays in a context outside of the for loop, the for loop context will end and so will all of your locally declared variables. Now there is a way around that:
Make an ArrayList, in a "Global context" to your loop, and initialize your variables in the for loop, then add them to the ArrayList, once you are out of the loop, then the ArrayList will hold your references to your variables and keep them from being disposed. When you are done with them, then just remove them from the ArrayList.
ArrayList<myNodes> al = new ArrayList<myNodes>(); //in a "global context"
for(int i=0; i<iSomeNumber; i++){
MyNode n = new myNode();
//do what ever
al.add(n);
}If you need key values to look up your nodes by, then you a Map of some type instead of an ArrayList.

• Using while loops instead of for loops in arrays?

I am new to java and doing a java tutorial on using arrays and for loops. What im trying to find out is how it is possible to use a while loop instead.
I would be very grateful if anyone can suggest a way of changing my code to use a while loop.
The code I have written is:
public class DetermineGrade
public static void main(String[]args)
final char[] mark = {'A','B' ,'C' ,'D' ,'F' };
char [] grade = new char[5];
int [] Score ={95,35,65,75};
for (int i=0; i<4; i++)
if (Score >= 90)
grade= mark[0] ;
else if (Score >=80)
grade = mark[1] ;
else if (Score >=70)
grade = mark[2] ;
else if (Score >=60)
grade = mark[3];
else grade = mark[4];
for (int i=0; i<4; i++)
System.out.println("grade = " + Score + ", " + grade);
Thankyou LB

Im trying to underdstand the differences in the
different loops. I can grasp the for loop but I dont
see how a while loop works, or how it id different
from the other?
for (j = INIT; j < MAX; j++) {
// do stuff
}is the same as
j = INIT;
while (j < MAX) {
// do stuff
j++;
}Lee

• Is there a way to run a For Loop independently within a While Loop in LabVIEW 2013?

In my program I would like to run a For loop inside of a While loop, and have them run independently, at their own execution rates. As a test, I wrote a simple VI with a While loop with 1 second timing, and into this I inserted a For loop with 3 second timing. I created indicators for both iteration terminals. Upon running the VI, I found the While loop waits for the For loop to run N times before the While loop executes again. I also found that sometimes the first iteration of the For loop will end at 1 second rather than 3 seconds, and the STOP button to terminate execution of the While loop does not always work.

Thanks, how would you synchronize the loops? I have gone through the Getting Started exercises and manual.
Why would synchronization matter? Did you want them to run independantly at their own speed or not?
Regardless, there's a synchronization pallette with functions for this, as Occurance.
Other solutions include a common loop counter and a case structure executing every X'th iteration, or having the faster loop send a queue or event every X'th loop that controls the slower loop.

• How to code a parallel 'for loop' and 'while loop' where the while loop cannot terminate until the for loop has finished?? (queues also present)

I've attached a sample VI that I just cannot figure out how to get working the way that I want. I've labeled the some sections with black-on-yellow text boxes for clarity during the description that follows in the next few sentences. Here's what I want:
1) overall -- i'm intend for this to be a subVI that will do data acquisition and write the data to a file. I want it to use a producer/consumer approach. The producer construct is the 'parallel for loop' that runs an exact number of times depending on user input (which will come from the mainVI that is not included). For now I've wired a 1-D array w/ 2 elements as a test case. During the producer loop, the data is acquired and put into a queue to be delt with in the consumer loop (for now, i just add a random number to the queue).
2) the consumer construct is the 'parallel while loop'. It will dequeue elements and write them to a file. I want this to keep running continuously and parallel until two conditions are met.
i. the for loop has finished execution
ii. the queue is empty.
when the conditions are met, the while loop will exit, close the queue, and the subVI will finish. (and return stuff to mainVI that i can deal with on my own)
Here's the problems.
1) in the "parallel for loop" I have a flat sequence structure.. I haven't had time to incorporate some data dependency into these two sequential sections, but basically, I just care that the "inner while loop" condition is met before the data is collected and queued. I think I can do this on my own, but if you have suggestions, I'm interested.
2) I can easily get the outer for and while loops to run sequentially, but I want them to run in parallel. My reasoning for this is that that I anticipate the two tasks taking very different amounts of time. .. basically, I want the while loop to just keep polling the queue to get everything out of it (or I suppose I could somehow use notifiers - suggestions welcome)... the thing is, this loop will probably run faster than the for loop, so just checking to see that the queue is empty will not work... I need to meet the additional condition that nothing else will be placed in the queue - and this condition is met when the for loop is complete. basically, I just can't figure out how to do this.
3) for now, I've placed a simple stop button in the 'parallel while loop', but I must be missing something fundamental here, because the stop button is totally unresponsive. i.e. - when I press it, it stays depressed, and nothing happens.
suggestions are totally welcome!
thanks,
-Z

So i read a bit more about the 'dequeue element' function, and as I understand it, since there is no timeout wired to the dequeue element function, it will wait forever, thus the race condition I suggested above can never happen!
Yes, you got it!
As I've thought about it a bit more, there's a few things that surprise me... first, the reason the 'dequeue element while loop' errors is not because there's nothing in the queue, it's becaues the queue has been released and it's trying to access that released queue... However the problem I have is this --- Even though there's no timeout wired to the dequeue element, I still would think that the while loop that contains it would continue to run at whatever pace it wanted -- and as i said before.. most of the time, it would find that there is nothing to dequeue, but once in a while, something is there. however, it seems that this loop only runs when something has been enqueued. the reason I say this is illustrated in the next code sample MODv2 that's attached below. I've added a stop button to the "queue size while loop" so the program runs until that is pressed. I've also added a simple conditional in the "dequeue while loop" that generates a random number if it a button is pressed... but this button is totally non-responsive... which means to me that the "dequeue while loop" isn't actually continuously running, but only when an element is added to the queue. this still seems almost like the 'dequeue while loop" waits for a notifier from the queue telling it to run. can you explain this to me? because it is different from what I expect to be happening.

• Getting a for loop inside a while loop

I've been having problems with the code below. I'm trying to get the 'while' loop to work so that the program will continue to run after a user types in a sentence. This is supposed to print out how many times a letter has been typed when a sentence has been put in, but it's not working right. It just keeps adding the first sentences numbers together even when a new sentence is typed out. I don't know what I'm doing wrong with this 'while' loop.
import java.util.Scanner;
import java.util.*;
public class Count
public static void main (String[] args)
String phrase; // a string of characters
int countBlank; // the number of blanks (spaces) in the phrase

Hi fais,
Following through with what JB suggested. The steps involved in replacing the inner for loop with a while loop are outlined below.
You can replace the inner for loop with a while by doing the following.
1) Right-click of the for loop and select "Repalce" then navigate to the "while loop".
2) Make sure the tunnels you where indexing on with the for loop are still indexing.
3) Drop an "array size" node on your diagram. Wire the array that determines the number of iterations your for loop executes into this "array size".
4) Wire the output of the array size into the new while loop.
5) Set the condition terminal to "stop if true".
6)Drop an "OR" gate inside the while loop and wire its output to the while loops condition terminal.
7) C
reate a local of the boolean "stop" button, and wire it into one of the inputs of your OR gate. This will allow you to stop the inner loop.
8) Drop a "less than" node inside the inner while loop.
9) Wire your iteration count into the bottom input of the "less than".
10) Wire the count (see step 4 above) into the top input of the less than. This will stop the inner loop when ever the inner loop has processed the last element of your array.
Provided I have not mixed up my tops and bottoms this should accomplish the replacement.
I will let others explain how to takle this task using the "case solution".

• How do I break a for loop (inside) and a while loop (outside) at the same time by a control button

I have a while loop (outside) and a for loop (inside) and a control button within the for loop. I want to stop the program by click the botton without finishing the for loop. How can I do that?
Thank you in advance.
