While loop not terminating

hmm. very strange to me. i have a condition that if a person enters QUIT then the program should terminate but for some reason its not terminating.
import java.util.*;
class BicycleTest {
     public static void main(String[] args) {
          BNode start, tail, next;
          start = null;
          Scanner s = new Scanner(System.in);
          System.out.println("Enter name");
          String name = s.next();
          if(!name.equalsIgnoreCase("QUIT")) {
               start = new BNode(new Bicycle(name), null);
               tail = start;
               while(true) {
                    name = s.next();
                    if(name.equalsIgnoreCase("QUIT")) break;
                    next = new BNode(new Bicycle(name), null);
                    tail.setNext(next);
                    tail = next;
}

jverd when you say an older version that means the
java version or the compiler? No, an older version of your code. Like you changed it (to what you first posted) but forgot to save or recompile. Maybe before you had equals instead of equalsIgnoreCase, or something like that.

    Hi PetrB
    I tested your vi. Results are unexpected.
    Upper loop runs to 10 and stops.Down loop keeps running and it should not, because the inputs to AND gate are TRUE.
    I deleted down loop and copied upper loop ant Now they stop at 10.
    I don´t know your DLL, so try to make it reentrant to avoid side efects.

  • Trouble with while loop, not sure what to put in it in my project

    I'm making a class to a simple command line craps game. I must use a while loop to implement craps rules. The rules that i was given are:
    if your first roll is a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10, you roll again until either you get a 7 (you lose) or you get the number from your first roll. (i thought 7 or 11 wins, like in the next example)
    yeah, thats right, not very good directions. The first directions i had for a different way of doing it using if and else statements were:
    The player rolls the two dice.
    If the sum of the resulting die values is 7 or 11, the player wins.
    If the sum is 2, 3, or 12, the player loses.
    If something else is rolled, the player has to roll again to determine the outcome.
    If the sum of the second roll is the same as what the player rolled the first time, the player wins. Otherwise the player loses.
    (You might get a pair of dice and play a few rounds to try it.)
    here's my code that i have so far for my craps class, in the middle section, i have previous code that i used for if else statements, that is what im trying to replace: package games;public class Craps {
    private Dice dice1;
    private Dice dice2;
    private int gamesPlayed;
    private int gamesWon;
    private boolean lastGameWon;
    private boolean gameOver;
    private int firstRoll;
    private int secondRoll;
    public Craps() {
    dice1 = new Dice(6);
    dice2 = new Dice(6);
    gamesPlayed = 0;
    gamesWon = 0;
    lastGameWon = false;
    firstRoll = 1;
    secondRoll = 2;
         //returns firstroll
    public int getFirstRoll(){
    return firstRoll;
         //returns secondroll
    public int getSecondRoll(){
    return secondRoll;
    public int getGamesPlayed(){
    return gamesPlayed;
    public int getGamesWon(){
    return gamesWon;
    public boolean lastGameWon(){
    return lastGameWon;
         public int nextSum()
         dice1.roll();
         dice2.roll();
         return dice1.getSideUp() + dice2.getSideUp();
    public void play()
              firstRoll = nextSum();
    if (firstRoll == 7 || firstRoll == 11)
              gameOver = true;
              gamesWon++;
              if (firstRoll == 2 || firstRoll == 3 || firstRoll == 12)
              gameOver = true;
                   else{
                   gameOver = false;
              while (gameOver == false)
              secondRoll++;
    public String toString()
    return "games - " + gamesPlayed + ", won - " + gamesWon + ", last game won - " + lastGameWon + " First Roll - " + firstRoll +
    ", Second Roll - " + secondRoll;
    i'm really confused on how to get the while loop will keep starting the game over if it is false, am i using the right approach? Also i have to use a while loop, its for a school project.
    thanks.

    }I'm not sure of craps rules, the code above makes a first roll and if game isn't won or lose at once (7 and 11 wins, 2,3 or 12 lose) a second roll is done. If the second roll is equals to the first made then the game is won else the game is lose. Is it right?

  • While loop not performing correctly

    When I enter ANY number, the second while loop in the code below executes. It should not execute when 117, 239, 298, 326, or 445 is entered. I can't seem to figure out why this does not work, and I do not know what else to try.

So if the user types in anything other than a number, it's causes a parse error (basically) and the exception causes it to skip the command to stop, and that makes it loop again.
    So apparently 3/4 of the people looking at that code didn't get it at first.

  • While loop not breaking?

            while(line != null){
                //do a bunch of stuff

    }I hit a line that == null when I am parsing and for some reason it is not breaking out of the while loop? I have no idea why.

    Sch104 wrote:

Perhaps it might contain zero characters, or only white space, but that doesn't make it null. If you want to break out of the loop when you reach an empty line, you'll have to write a test for an empty line.
    (Don't worry about what ibanezplayer85 said. Your code is perfectly good for processing a text file, it's equivalent to what he/she posted. I think your version is easier to understand, but you will very frequently encounter his/her version in code so it doesn't hurt to understand it, though.)

  • Parallel while loops not running in parallel

    I am collecting data from a PCI 4351 board and a 6070E board. These are connected to a TC 2190 and a BNC 2090. I do not need exact sychronization, however I do need them to collect data at different rates. Currently I am using two while loops to perform this, but they run sequentially in stead of simultaneously, that is, the second while loop waits for the first one to finish before running. Is there any way I can get these to run both at the same time instead of one after the other?

    Parallel Whiles.vi ‏89 KB

    Any way you do it, you're going to have to sequentially read from the data buffer, and the implementation you have now may be the fastest, if not the most accurate.  I would recommend that you either put a wait statement in each loop if the two data reads need different timing, or just wire the error cluster from one's output to the other's input and have them both in the same loop.  At least that way you are always certain which is executing before the other.  Also, in the dataflow (wired together) example, I would still recommend a wait statement, just to be on the safe side.  Even if you have a wait of 10 ms it may save you from spinning your loop pointlessly.

    i have a for loop inside of while loop.when i press stop for while loop, i also would like to stop for loop.how can i solve this problem?thanks

    Hi fais,
    Following through with what JB suggested. The steps involved in replacing the inner for loop with a while loop are outlined below.
    You can replace the inner for loop with a while by doing the following.
    1) Right-click of the for loop and select "Repalce" then navigate to the "while loop".
    2) Make sure the tunnels you where indexing on with the for loop are still indexing.
    3) Drop an "array size" node on your diagram. Wire the array that determines the number of iterations your for loop executes into this "array size".
    4) Wire the output of the array size into the new while loop.
    5) Set the condition terminal to "stop if true".
    6)Drop an "OR" gate inside the while loop and wire its output to the while loops condition terminal.
    7) C
    reate a local of the boolean "stop" button, and wire it into one of the inputs of your OR gate. This will allow you to stop the inner loop.
    8) Drop a "less than" node inside the inner while loop.
    9) Wire your iteration count into the bottom input of the "less than".
    10) Wire the count (see step 4 above) into the top input of the less than. This will stop the inner loop when ever the inner loop has processed the last element of your array.
    Provided I have not mixed up my tops and bottoms this should accomplish the replacement.
    I will let others explain how to takle this task using the "case solution".

  • Stop dependant while loops with 1 button

    Hi,
    I am developing a utility that allows a user to configure up to 2 devices (both use same driver with a different board number), click initialize, which then brings up a file dialog and displays arrays for the data to be collected and some error messages for each measurement.  The user then clicks the Start/Stop button to begin collecting and logging data.  Currently i have a Wait(ms) block to allow the user to set often the measurement should be made.  Currently the Start/Stop button allows collection to be started, paused, and started again.  My problem is trying to have a master stop button that should stop all loops immediately when it is pressed.
    I tried using a global variable for the stop button, but the measurement and logging while loop doesnt stop until after the wait(ms) block times out.  Can anyone give suggestions.  If i need to restructure the VI into different loops, I can do that.  I just want to understand the right way to program something like this.
    The VIs are attached.  I removed the device specific measurement VI so that anyone can open the vis and run them to see how it works.

    Ok.  I had a chance to take a look at your code and I think you don't quite understand the concept of "dataflow".  Let me see if I can help.
    First of all...when I refer to your upper structure, I am referring to the first while loop, sequence structure, and subsequent while loops.  When I refer to your lower structure, I am referring to the while loop containing the event structure.  Just so we get our terminology straight.
    I believe that you are under the illusion that your upper structure contains three parallel while loops.  It does not.  It contains three SERIAL while loops.  There is dataflow dependency between the while loops.  The sequence structure requires data that is not available until the first while loop has finished executing, so the sequence structure cannot start executing until the first while loop has terminated.
    The second while loop requires inputs from the first frame of the sequence structure (which, by the way, you don't need and should get rid of...the sequence structure, I mean), so it cannot start executing until the first frame of the sequence structure has terminated.  The third while loop requires inputs from the second while loop...so, again, the third while loop cannot run until the second while loop has finished executing.
    Now, for your stop button.  You have that global stopping all three loops.  So here's what is happening in your program:
    Your program starts.  The first while loop executes in parallel with the loop which contains the event structure.
    At some point you press the "stop" button.  Both the first while loop and the loop containing the event structure finish executing.
    The first frame of your sequence structure executes.
    The second frame of your sequence structure executes.  The second while loop reads the "stop" value from the global, so it executes once and then finishes.
    The third while loop starts executing.  Again, the loop reads the "stop" value from the global, so it executes once and then finishes.
    Then your program terminates.
    You need to restructure your program, because right now it doesn't make any sense at all.  Your block diagram would benefit from some serious tidying up as well, your wiring is a mess.  I suggest you look into a state machine architecture for this program.

  • Dsc periodic I/O "stop while loop" usage?

    I'm using LabView 8.5.1 with DSC.  I have created a working periodic I/O server VI and successfully deployed it.
    The one glitch I am running into is what happens when the Shared Variable Engine I/O process is terminated.  I normally terminate it by using "remove process" from Variable Manager.
    The I/O server wizard lets me choose the while loop for termination during the build process, but any code following the while loop is not executed.  In fact, the process continues running for 10 seconds until the "abort VI timeout" is reached, at which point the VI stops.  The "stop" terminal of the main while loop is wired to a "create control" "STOP" button on the front panel.  Publishing or not publishing the "STOP" control during the I/O wizard process has no effect.
    I'd like to do cleanup steps after the while loop terminates.  Unfortunately the "Heat Exchanger" example has no code after the while loop to illustrate the concept.
    What am I missing?
    Thanks,
    Mike

    Hi Van - let me clarify my question...
    I don't believe that the termination portion of the DSC "periodic I/O server wizard" actually works properly, or at least an example is needed of how to make it work.
    It appears to me that the wizard functionality of "choosing the server termination method" might not work.  Within the wizard, the two options are to abort the running server VI, or to choose a "while loop" to be forcefully-terminated with a standby timeout value to force a VI abort anyway, if the while loop does not exit.
    I set up a simple server VI with one main while loop that does RS-232 I/O with a "running" beep on a 1 second timer.  After the while loop is another small block of code that closes the serial port, and a different "terminating" beeper.  When I run the VI interactively, both beeps work fine.  When I use the wizard to turn it into a server and it is deployed to the SVE, the beeps begin normally.  When I stop the SVE process via "remove process" in Variable Manager, the "running" beeps continue for another 10 seconds until the abort timeout occurs, even though with the wizard I specified the only while loop in the VI to be aborted.
    The heat exchanger example works fine.  Unfortunately it does not have any code following the while loop, so it doesn't shed any light on this issue.  Ideally that example would be updated a little to show how to use the "while loop termination" feature.
    Basically my request comes down to this:  is there a way to actually make this work, or is it another in the list of bugs in 8.5.1?
    Thanks,
    Mike

    Hallo,
    Can the use of occurrences solve this problem?
    The Main program can create an occurrence which can be passed to the
    sub-VIs. Upon pressing the button to cancel the loop, the occurrence can be
    set, instantly transmitted to all other VIs sharing which were passed the
    same occurrence. Of course a small handling routine has to be written (say
    a sequence parallel to the executing while loop waiting for the occurrence
    and then setting the exit parameter to "true") but this is trivial.
    I have checked this with a small program splitting an occurrence to three
    seperate VIs and it works.
    If you want, I can send a cop

    It may well be possible with notifiers or something else, but I have far

    The notifier is probably better than occurence at this case - than it is not neccessry to write a parallel sequence.
    The use of notifier is very simple, just follow an example in Help/Search example -> Advances -> Execution control -- Synchronization -> SubVI notification.
    Good luck

    My second question is that is there any emergency STOP button in Labview so that when I press that button, it cuts all the power going to the system. Thanks...

    Just a comment on the Stop button.
    It's not really a good idea to rely solely on a software emergency shutdown. Especially if the shutdown is to prevent some type of hazardous condition to the people running the test. The problem is that if your application or PC in general is having some type of problem, it may not be able to shut everything down as needed.
    You should always have a mechanical Big Red Stop Button that you can hit to cut power to everything. In addition to the button, I usually do have LabVIEW monitor things and if conditions are not looking good, have it automatically shut things down. This has always worked good, and I cant remember any time Ive actually had to use the big button, but its nice to know its there.
    VERY IMPORT
    ANT:
    Using the Abort button on the LabVIEW toolbar is NOT the thing to do. This stops your application where ever it is in its execution and does not allow it to finish or execute any shutdown code you might have put in. A Kill button on the front panel works well. Ive put a single Boolean terminal in its own little While loop to monitor it. It usually writes to a digital line thats holding a relay on that will cut the power.

    Is there any setting change that I have to make it to get it work properly.
    Please suggest on this.
    Thanks and regards,
    Herok

    I am sending you the VI. I am not sure if this would help you because only in 2 computers this behaviour is seen. In others, it works as it is supposed to work.
    Whatever you are seeing must be due to some corruption or folding error. It all works fine here.
    To make sure there are no hidden objects, simply press the cleanup button which would reveal any extra stuff (which is obviously not there). Does it fix itself if you click the termination terminal an even number of times? What if you remove the bad loop and create a new one?
    Could it be you have some problems with the graphics card and the icon of the conditional terminal does not update correctly?
    Whay happens if you connect a control instead of a diagram constant?
    What is different on the computers where it acts incorrectly (different CPU (brand, model), #of cores, etc.)
