White swatch is gray

Hi there,
I've noticed that Illustrator CS4 displays the white swatch as gray in swatches palette. The unfortunate thing is that when I place the Illustrator file that has white in the art into InDesign, everything that is colored white appears gray. The problem is that I work in a print shop where we proof things via PDF on screen to some customers. When I produce a PDF out of InDesign with said placed art, white appears gray. Naturally my customers start asking why their job is printing gray instead of white.
My question is if there is any way to disable this appearance of white in the process so I end up with an accurate PDF? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Wade,
Trashing the preferences seems to have done away with the gray/white swatch. Thanks! In regard to your previous suggestion, I'm 100% sure it was the white swatch I was selecting. The white swatch appeared gray both in the color palette when all CMYK sliders were set to zero, and when I opened the Default CMYK swatches palette. Also, any object I drew had an ever so slight gray cast in Illustrator and PDFs.
It's as if I toggled on some appearance of white setting that is similar to the options for appearance of black. Being of the nature I am, even though the preference trashing seems to have fixed it I would still like to know what setting made the difference.
Thanks for all the help, everyone.

Have you checked the whites in Photoshop and made sure they are all 255|255|255? Depending on the compression used, JPEGs can have artifacts in an otherwise white field like in the edges of this low quality jpeg:

Hello, I have created a short video with a white background (title screen) and no matter what compression settings I use to export the file to Quicktime, I always have the same problem -- the white background appears gray in the final video (with the exception of the uncompressed YUV422 setting).
Does anyone know why this is happening? Thanks!

  • White swatch does not show on PDF or print-outs...

    Hi,
I've been noticing this glitch with the white swatch option more and more:
When I apply it to objects, it appears in the file, but when I generate a PDF it vanishes, and of course does not show on the print-out either.
Also, it won't show up on the print-out directly output from Illustrator.
    Anyone seen this issue?
When I change the color to anything else but white, the graphics show up again.
    Thank you.

If you turn on Overprint Preview in Illustrator, does it also disappear?
Overprint may be turned on, check the Attributes pallet, and uncheck Overprint Fill and/or Overprint Stroke.

Could anybody help me? i bought my MacBook, about 3 months ago and never had any problems with it, 3 days ago i want to restart it after i tried to make an actuallitation... so when i did it just appears a white screen with gray apple logo, and no timer going... i look for help here in the apple discussions, and some guy seem to have the same problem... i did just what the other user recomended, i insert the original cd, while press the C key, and went to disk utilities on the bar on top, and clik on Repair Disk. When i did it appears a list of things that says:
Verify and Repair volumen “Macintosh HD”
    Checkin Journaled HFS Plus volume
    Checkin Extents Overflow file
    Checkin Catalog file.
    Checkin multi-linked files.
    Checkin Catalog hierarchy
    Checkin Extended Attributes file
    Checkin volume bitmap
    Checkin volume information
The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK. (Font in green)
Then i didnt know what to do so i restarted and after that it appears the same White screen with gray Apple logo.
If somebody can help me, i will apreciate it, Thanks.

Your system info shows you are using OS 10.1. How is that possible if your Macbook is only 3 months old? You will need to correct the information if incorrect & insert the correct information.
After disconnecting all periperals try Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM. If that does not work try Apple Portables: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
Since you are still under warranty, you can contact Apple about the problem if the solutions do not work.

  • Help! White screen with gray folder with question mark

Help, my macbook always shows this white screen with gray folder with question mark after turning it on.

That folder with the question mark icon means that the MacBook can't find the boot directory. That can either mean it can't find the hard drive or the Operating System data on the hard drive is somehow corrupted.
With 10.4, 10.5 or 10.6 put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. Be sure to either use the disc that came with your Mac, or, if you installed a later Mac OS X version from disc, use the newer disc. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option Key until the Install Disk shows up) until the apple shows up. That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
Or if you are running 10.7 Lion or 10.8 Mountain Lion, boot from the recovery partition (Command +R on boot) and use Disk Utility to repair your OS 10.7 or 10.8 partition.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
If it is, then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left hand list. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've clicked on the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions. After repairing use Startup Disk from the same menu to choose your hard drive for restarting from your hard drive.
If your hard drive isn’t recognized in Disk Utility then your hard drive is probably dead.

  • Indesign Swatch Palette grayed out!?

    Hi there,
I'm having a massive issue this morning as I've come to use InDesign and I have no colour in my Swatch Panel and the Colour panel is all grayed out. I've opened up previous documents and the Swatch Palette is completely empty even thought the Ink Manager shows that the colours are there. So I've tried resetting all the panels, removing and thus resetting the Indesign Preferences but have had no joy at all. Any help?
    Thanks

don't worry, have reinstalled the software and now okay

  • White text appears gray on TV

I created a home movie using FCP X and i have simple titles that separate each section.  The titles use white text created in FCP.  I'm noticing on my new Samsung un55d8000 tv that when the titles appear on the screen, they look white for a moment and then fade to gray.
Is there a specific white that i should be using to avoid this?

I don't believe I'm using any template.  I'm simply entering text onto the timeline.

  • Print illustrations on white background;  eliminate gray square/rectangle behind images

working on desktop publishing project that will be printed in black white only. Have photoshop images that will be used as illustrations. when I put these images into InDesign and print them, a gray square/rectangle appears behind the image. I cannot eliminate the gray background. it is essential to the project that the images print directly on paper without the background gray. have tried several youtube video lessons but none has been completely successful yet.

I don't quite understand..........I'm using iwork pages, I click on shapes (square), I fill square with pink, I click on media (clips are stored there), picture of butterfly is than place within the pink square. However I would like it so that the picture of the butterfly layout only with the pink background. I don't want the white background. Am I missing something, or I'm just not being clear? Thanks for any further assistants.

Yes, I tried that, it's how I got from the square arrows to the rounded arrows.  But the background is still gray.
I'm pretty sure that is by design - the idea is that even if you change to a modern control, you don't lose your defined colors.
The easiest way to change this is to use the eye drip tool which gets the colors from whatever you click on and use that to color the new numeric using the paint tool. The quickest way is changing to the paint tool (shift+right click or a couple of tab clicks if you don't have the tool palette visible) and then hold Ctrl to get the eye drip tool.

  • [SOLVED]ETQW - white BG and gray cursor, no graphics being loaded.

Ok, so I got this game d/l'd and then managed to get all the files I needed extracted to the same directory as the linux client installed too. I did all of this in ubuntu(more HD space ATM). The game worked perfectly. So then I tried to run the game from within arch, accessing it on the ubuntu drive.
Well, the game started as normal, but the graphics do not load. All I get is a white screen and a gray cursor box. The sound works, the '~' command works. In fact this is the only way for me to exit, press ~ and type exit.
The error I get is something about GL_Textures. But, in my terminal window that's all there this, if I try to scroll to the top to see what started it all I hit a dead end because the terminal buffer ran out.
    Any Ideas on this problem?
