    getMessage is declared as private in the base class, and therefor cannot be overridden in any subclass.
    Edit: I think I understand the question better now. You want to know why it compiles when you think it shouldn't. It's because the private method isn't really inherited at all. Your subclass created a brand new private method of the same signature, but it's completely unrelated.

    Now, what would happen if you assign pDerived = new Base() and then call pDerived->bar()?By forbidding such an assignment, compiler prevents you from writing error-prone code.

    We've got an abstract base class (StringBase) which various types of strings inherit from. The copy constructor for this base class is private, since we don't want to allow copying when this class shouldn't be directly instantiated. A number of our methods take specify the base class as a reference, but take a derived class temporary as a default argument (see code appended).
    This worked fine in 12.3, but in 12.4 beta, this now says:
       Error: StringBase::StringBase(const StringBase&) is not accessible from __dflt_argA().
    This works fine in clang and gcc, and indeed, this GNU document says it was a bug which was fixed in gcc 4.3.0:

    It only appears to error when the "-g" option is used, however, which doesn't seem right, and compiles fine if the "-g" option is removed, which makes me think it's a bug. Presumably the optimizer is eliding the copy when not using -g, but it's left in for debug mode, causing the compile error?

  • Cannot compile Library project in Flash builder 4: Unable to locate specified base class

    I am migrating from Flex builder 3 to Flash builder 4, during that process I found that Flash builder could'nt compile Flex Library projects which contains components in the form of mxml files. Compiler throws "Unable to locate specified base class".
    I have narrowed it down to by creating a flex library project named test library, below its screenshot with its package structure
    ControlA is based on componentA
    when i compile this project, mxml compiler throws this error

    To further test it, I have made another library project with same package structure using pure AS3, and it compiled without errors

    It might be this happens and other errors if you forget to Run Flash Builder 4.5 Buritto and startup the other version FB4.
    It uses the same project listings and that can be confusing since you're not expecting the old version to be aware of new Buritto (MobileApplications) projects you added (thinking) only to the BETA version installed elseware no doubt.
    Well it might not be your problem but worthy of noting for other's I'm sure.
    Otherwise you've double checked you're using SDK 4.5 Hero with it too! right?

  • Accessing private field of Derived object in Base class

    Hi,
    I have this piece of code I wrote a while ago to test something. The issue is accessing a private field of Base class in Base but of a Derived object.
    Here is the code:

    }The commented code does not work but casting d to Base does.
    Can someone please explain the reasoning for this.
    Forgot to mention that the compilation error is that x has private access in Base.

    Check that your classpath is not set up to this class when you start the
              server and check the ProductionDeploymentMode to false in the starting
              parameters!

    I know specifying a private nullary constructor means you dont want the class to be instantiated or the class is a factory or a singleton pattern. I know the workaround is to just wrap all the methods of the intended superclass, but that just seems less wizardly.

    It really does sound like you're barking up the wrong tree here. I can see no good reason to want to subclass java.util.Arrays. Could you could explain why you want to do that? - perhaps you are misunderstanding static methods.

    I am extending a SQL based VO and when I select the extends in the VO Wizard step 7. I am unable to find the base class for the object and rowimpl. I have copied them in the class path and still they don't show up (but can see other classes) ? Could you please tell where am I going wrong?

    Well here is the deal - I have the whole of $JAVA_TOP/per directory in my class path and also under myprojects/oracle/apps/per directory. I have created a BC4J abc.oracle.apps.per.selfservice.appraisals.finalrate. Here is where I will be creating the new SQLVO. In the step 7 of VO Wizard there is extends button when I select and navigate through oracle.apps.per.selfservice.appraisals.server I don't see my FinalCompListVORowImpl class although I could see it in the navigator. Do I need to navigate to this level for step7 of VO Wizard or default it to oracle.jbo.server.ViewRowImpl? Also I have included the Java and xml files in my project. Your help is appreciated.

    so I think if the
    outer class is not static , then Inner class can't be
    static as well. This is incorrect. An enclosed class can be indeed static while the outer is not, and vice versa.
    The difference between static/non static in regards to enclosed classes is that the static ones are 'top-level' and cannot access the members of the enclosing class.
    The effect of making an enclosed class static means there is only one instance of any variables, no matter how many instances of the outer class are created. In this situation how could the static inner class know which variables to access of its non static outer class. Of course the answer is that it could not know, and thus an static inner class cannot access instance variables of its enclosing class.
    Now, regarding non-static inner classes, and trying to give a valid answer to the original post:
    As with instance methods and variables, a non-static inner class is associated with an instance of its enclosing class and has direct access to that object's instance variables and methods.
    TestOuter outer = new TestOuter();
    TestOuter.TestInner inner = outer.new TestInner();Because an inner class is associated with an instance (inner class implicitly keeps a reference to the object of the enclosing class that created it), it cannot define any static members itself. Static members cannot access the this pointer.
    So, in an ordinary (non-static) inner class, the link to the outer class object is achieved with a special this reference. A static inner class does not have that special this reference, nor would a static method/variable of an ordinary (non-static) inner class.

    Sure you can read and write at the same time. But normally you would be reading from one place and writing to another place.
    I rather regret avoiding the OP's earlier post asking how to combine two classes. I looked at the two classes posted and realized the best thing to do was actually to break them into more classes. But I also realized it was going to be a big job explaining why and how, and I just don't have the patience for that sort of thing.
    So now we have a Big Ball Of Tar&trade; and I feel partly responsible.

    Thanks for your help with this problem. Now I have another problem that I am having a hard time figuring out. My program is using inheritance and polymorphism. I trying to use only one version of methods in the superclass points which extends the shapes class which is the abstract superclass vs. repeating the implementation of the methods (move, show, etc.) in each of the subclasses. The error I am getting is this "declare the class abstract, or implement abstract member 'Point Shapes.move()'. As you see, move is declared abstract and of type point in the Shapes superclass and it's behavior is implemented in the subclass Points extending Shapes. The other subclasses, circle, rectangle and lines will invoke the move method from Points and return a new point object. Why I am I getting the error to declare or implement move when the implementation is in Point?

  • Set fields of derived class in base class constructor via reflection?

    Does the Java Language Specification explicitly allow setting of fields of a derived class from within the base class' constructor via reflection? The following test case runs green, but I would really like to know if this Java code is compatible among different VM implementations.

    why not just put a method in the superclass that the subclasses can call to initialize the subclass member variable?In derived classes (which are plug-ins), clients can use a field annotation which provides some parameter metadata such as validators and the default value. The framework must set the default value of fields, before the class' initializer or constructors are called. If the framework would do this after derived class' initializer or constructors are called, they would be overwritten:
