Why are apps still running?

Why is it that even after I shut off the phone and turn it back on, there are still apps in the multitasking pane? Shouldn't all of the apps have closed when the phone was shut off?

Location apps will turn themselves back on when the phone is restarted.
For further clarification, this and Google may help a bit.

  • Why are Apps still not syncing between my iPhone 4S and iPad 4?

I have a new iPad 4 and I also have an iPhone 4S.  I have enabled 'Automatic Downloads' on both, but for some reason, I can download Apps on one device and they're not showing up on the other.  The only thing I can figure is that maybe some of the Apps downloaded on the iPad, for example, aren't compatible with the iPhone 4S and therefore they don't automatically download.  Or, and I hope note, there's a glitch in the system :-(
I like to have all my stuff sync'd to the extent possible, but this automated App synchronization doesn't really seem to be happening as advertised.
And yes, I did go into iTunes on my PC and enable the automatic downloads there as well on the Preferences tab.
Some example Apps that didn't download from my iPad to my iPhone are USA Today, Men's Health Mag, UPS and Quick Scan barcode scanner.
    Any help is much appreciated.

I may recall that you might have to charge your device in order for the automatic download to work. But I'm not 100% sure, it is worth trying out.

  • OK, if "root" is disabled why is root still running app?

A question for you UNIX gurus, or maybe I'm still paranoid. If the root user is disabled how can the root user still run stuff? In Activity Monitor I see "root" running all sorts of activities, all of which look like system activities (notifyd, securityd, memberd, etc.).
Perhaps someone can explain root a little more to me, and I can put my paranoia to rest. Or, more specifically, what users should I see or not see (windowserver, nobody, unknown, and all these other folks I see in NetInfo Manager)?
    TIA

    Bob
Saying "root is disabled" is really a shorthand for "the root account is disabled for login". Unix wouldn't work without root and these other users beavering away under the hood.
You should have all these system users on your machine (and maybe others if you have installed other software). This lists User ID (UID), short name, and full name:
    <pre>-2 nobody Unprivileged User
    0 root System Administrator
    1 daemon System Services
    99 unknown Unknown User
    26 lp Printing Services

  • Why are apps appearing in my music folder?

Just wondering if I can delete these ".IPA" (iOS App) files and .XML files that have appeared in my Music folder. I'm on a PC, so the files are assigned to iTunes, but I still don't know why they're here. I think they appeared after I synced my iPod Touch (2nd Gen) with the computer. There's also over 300 "ITC2" files which I have no clue about. All the app files are apps I have on my iPod, so that much makes sense, and some of the "ITC2" files are the same name as the 2 books I have on my iPod. All the others are just things like "4C9515F643471A36-D9A5A87B5F4A4EDF.ITC2". I just want to know if I can delete them really.
    Thanks
PS: Isn't leaving iOS app files lying around kind of asking me to share them for free on the internet? Just saying.

Here are typical layouts for the iTunes folders:
.ipa files are your apps and should end up in Mobile Applications. .itc2 files are cached artwork and should end up in the Album Artwork folders. These are normal parts of the iTunes library and should be left alone. I can't tell exactly what you did when you connected your device but it looks like you allowed iTunes to transfer your purchases into your library. This is a good thing. If your iPod was lost, stolen or damaged, you would have the files needed to rebuild your setup on a replacement device.
The iTunes folder is normally created inside your profile's Music folder, with the iTunes Media folder inside iTunes. If the files in question are appearing outside of the normal folder structure outlined above then perhaps you have the wrong setting for the media folder.

  • I have uninstalled, downloaded latest and installed but it still doesn't work. Why are there still files leftover even after manually removal whatever I could?

I am a Windows 8.1 user. I have followed instructions found online. But still nothing works.
McAfee is still saying Firefox is untrusted and will not run it.
I have managed to delete some folders containing Firefox but there are some still remaining.
    Why?
There was never a problem before today.

Hi, [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/uninstall-firefox-from-your-computer this article] will help you to completely remove Firefox.
You should ''only'' download Firefox from [https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/ Mozilla.]
If McAfee is still not allowing it, you may need to look at the settings within McAfee.
    Hope that helps.

  • Deleted Chrome app still running in dock

I completely deleted Google Chrome from my Macbook Pro because it was apparently still running even after I quit and force-quit it multiple times. I deleted the app using AppCleaner so no Chrome files still exist (supposedly), but the app is still running in my Dock.
I've tried re-installing Chrome, but it just creates another Chrome application and the blank white page icon is still there. I deleted the second Chrome and this one still remains.
    Any solutions?

The white icon suggests some Chrome files are still on your computer.
Reboot your machine after deleting the Chrome files. That's the way you finally purge your computer of applications you want to delete. Afterwards, perform a Spotlight search (Command-space) to search for other Chrome files you might have missed.
And post here with your results.

  • Why are Apps taking up space on my Mac in iTunes when I have iCloud?

The Apps in iTunes on my Mac take up a lot of disk space. Why are they there at all? I use iCloud to backup my iPhone and iPad. iTunes Store keeps my purchase history. So, why are the Apps taking up space on my computer?

  • Why are powerbooks still on apple's shelves?

why are the powerbook still being sold by Apple? Because they're emptying their shelves?
Or more interesting: Why would people buy a Powerbook?
I am just wondering because i am on the market to buy a laptop.
MBP are very expensive and Powerbook are not that cheap.
    MBP or PB?
    Any idea?

The Apple online store has not sold powerbooks (other than refurb's) since the various Intel laptops first appeared. And the retail store in Short Pump Va. hasn't had any powerbooks since shortly after the Intel machines hit the shelves.
In what Apple store have you seen new powerbooks for sale?
Macmall and other retailers still seem to have a few - and will have I suppose until thier inventory is gone. But, to my knowledge, Apple itself pulled them as soon as the respective Intel machine was available.

  • Close Mac Server App still run?

Hello, if I close my Mac Server application (I have a mac mini) will my websites still run? Or does the app HAVE to be open?

You do not have to have Server.app running all the time. Your websites and all the other services will keep running in the background.
In fact it is firstly best not to leave Server.app running all the time because it will after a period often get confused about the status of the services, and secondly this can be a security risk as it makes it available to anyone else. It is also for the same reason not necessary or desirable to even have a user logged in on the server. The services do not need this.

  • Can apps still run even if closed through multi tasking?

I'm having a nightmare. I ungraded to 4.2 and safari started not loading properly after 15 mins use. No amount of clearing cache etc solved it. I got it exchanged and had 4.2 put on in the Apple store in case my version was corrupt. New phone had same issues. Another replacement... This one had a dud battery so in last ditch attempt before the long trek to the Apple store I put 4.2 on again. Battery improved but safari started not loading again- the blue bar only reaching part way so I constantly have to refresh. I keep all not active apps closed through multi tasking, also notifications off. I'm wondering if any apps can appear closed but still run- cuz asides from a bad app, I can't understand what might be causing this. Different phones, different 4.2, and always restored as a new phone. I'm at my wits end!

Thanks so much for your answer.
Yes, I am sliding to power off.

  • Safari disappeared, Windows are gone App still running

The Following is an example it happend previously related to other Tasks.
I try to test a Website from DW and hit the Preview-Button, this takes me to Safari. So far so good.
But all i can see is the Safari-Icon in the Dock running, it allows me to show how many windows i have currently open and all the other Dock-Icon-Rightclickoptions. I can see de Menu on top of my Screen and browse it, even use it! To create new Tabs or Windows, change from FC to Windowed and so on…
The strange thing thou is, that there is no Safari-Window at all visible!
When i go to MC it will not show up as a Fullscreen-App running nor it is visible on any other Desktop...
Shuting down the App solves the Problem

If GF has all the songs in her profile, I suspect the files are still on the PC.
    Which is good!

  • Why are video stills showing as artwork in music app?

    Hi,
I have an iPhone 5s with the latest iOS.
I have iTunes set to not transfer music videos to my iPhone because a few of my albums came with free music videos. However, really annoyingly, my iPhone is showing a still from one of the videos in the album as the artwork for the whole album in both album view and the tiles when you turn the phone.  But not when you play an actual song from the album.  How do I get it to stop doing this?
I have edited all of the albums with videos in iTunes so that they all have the same artwork for each file.  I synced everything and it made no difference.  So i deleted all of the songs from my iPhone and resynced all 4gb back to the iPhone and it made no difference.  I've deleted the music videos from iTunes and deleted all the songs from my iPhone and resynced them all a second time and it has made no difference.  I just dont get how if I dont have the videos in iTunes and I dont have it set to sync videos anyways, that the video stills will still show as the album artwork in "coverflow" and the albums tab on the iPhone.
Hope someone can help me out because the video stills are meaningless when trying to quickly find an album.
    Thanks.

I checked each song file in each album individually to make sure it had the appropriate album artwork and I applied the artwork to the video files as well (before I took the decision to delete them entirely).
I also did the "clear artwork" option but it didnt clear anything because the artwork is the artwork provided by apple store rather than my own that I have added in.
So in essence, I tried both the suggestions at various points and neither worked

  • Why are we still getting IEEE 1394a • VIA VT 6308P chipsets????!!!!

Why is it we are still getting redundant IEEE 1394a controllers(400mb/s) on the latest motherboards rather than the newer IEEE 1394b controllers(800mb/s)? This is stupid... the 1394b ports have been around for more than 6 months, there are many supported devices for both a and b yet if you want to do b you still need an apple mac?
Is there some sort of compatability issue with the newer IEEE 1394b controller or are the "IBM Compatible" manufacturers just too lazy/cheap/stupid to start using it??? I want answers .... I wanted to buy the new P6N Diamond (running a K9N Diamond at the moment) motherboard but am hesitant because there is no IEEE 1394b controller and i have 3 "b" devices that may as well be USB2.0 for all the use they are in conjunction with MSI motherboards... I expected more from MSI with the X-fi and everything else that is included to find that a useful and at times essential piece of technology is left out for a cheaper controller for more profit? Am I going to be forced to go to an other manufacturer for my needs or is MSI going to satisfy a loyal customer of more than 8 years? I am also the IT Manager for a medium sized building company and purchase MSI product for our work machines .... I would be saddened if I was forced to find a more suitable manufacturer due to MSI's greed?

You should probably write a letter or send an email to MSI.
This is a user to user forum, MSI does not monitor this forum...
The board I purchased (975x Powerup) is an enthusiast board, generally speaking the users that purchase them are a finicky bunch. So if a motherboard doesn't support the exact graphics or sound that they require, they find one that does. Since yours is the first post that I have seen concerning IEEE 1394b support, it doesn't look to be a high priority for most users. Also, most of the MSI boards are very reasonably priced, and don't always include the latest toys. That is probably what keeps the price for these motherboards, so low.
I may be confused about this? But I thought the P6N Diamond is an AMD Nvidia board? If it is, your may want to post your question in that section.
Anyway, as I mentioned earlier, try writing to MSI about IEEE 1394b support, maybe they can explain why there is no support for it, or let you know when they will implement support.
