Why are these basic actions so hard?

I'm new to CS6 but not to video editing tools. I'm shocked that some basic controls are either missing or very hard to find. Can anybody tell me whether there's a convenient way to:
Enter a number (e.g. "00;00;04;00") to specify the duration of a clip or set of clips? I can't find a place to do it in the Effect Controls window.
Widen or narrow the timeline display without using the awkward Ctrl-+ keystrokes or manipulating the tiny slider control below the timeline? Perhaps an easy gesture?
Select a very narrow (short) clip when hovering over clip only produces trim cursors? I don't want to expand and compress the timeline just to do this.

What work process do people follow for creating a film using CS6 that includes animated text? Many other non-linear editors have built-in text and object motion effects but PP apparently doesn't.

I thought I could just move these titles screens into AE, create the animated intermediary frames in AE, and then copy the new intermediary frames back into PP. After hours of poking around, I'm coming to the sad conclusion that PP title screens can't be imported into AE. Can this possibly be true?

I've got 25+ points in my PP sequence where I'd like to have the text animate. I don't want to re-create all 25 start and end frames again in AE.
Dynamic Linking is the best way.
Unfortunately, you will need to re-create the titles.

F14, F15, F16 -- why are these keys on my Mac Keyboard ?

Why are these keys added to my Macintosh Keyboard [circa September 2006] if the **** operating system won't allow us to use them ?
What the **** Apple ??

My 5+ year old keyboard has the F13 F14 F15 keys sitting all by their lonesome above the help, home, page up block of keys, and I set them to do the three Expose functions, so the system will use them (at least if you have the right hack). All the F keys used to be handier though, back in the OS 9 days, when I assigned them to do all sort of things.

Why are these words not acceptable?

Following up from another question regarding the frustrating password validation, you answered back that these following words were not acceptable in one's password:

I understand that it'd be a problem if someone used one of those alone without any prefix or suffix with it, but WHY are you blocking it altogether? Why not allow it at least in middle of a cryptic word, like !@#$skype**&& , or ()()skype<><> ?
It seems your password validation rules just check for an occurance of those words (some of which are questionable as to why it's blocked in the first place) anywhere in the string.
Why are you making it hard for your users to come up with a password they can remember?Pretty much every other services (gmail, facebook, twitter, etc.) are equally as important and used (if not more important/used than Skype, on a daily basis) and don't enforce as much password rules and blocked words.
It would be nice to see Skype go in the direction of 2-step verification like Gmail has.
Use a simple password, bind a Cell-Phone number to it, get your temporary code via txt-message (if it's your first time on that computer / non-cached in browser), Simple!

SnippetPreview$.htm - Why are these not being deleted?

I have the following files in my project folder:
SnippetPreview$.htm
SnippetPreview1$.htm
SnippetPreview2$.htm
SnippetPreview3$.htm
SnippetPreview4$.htm
I noticed them because they are not in Visual SourceSafe so they appear when I go to add files to VSS when I create new snippets. They contain the text of snippets I've created.
I know they are harmless, but why are they not being automatically deleted from RH when no longer needed?
Is this a setting or preference I can set?

Sometimes temporary files are left behind. These are just files created on previewing a snippet and like any other temporary files are not deleted. Just delete them.

Why are these protected- finalize() & clone()

Why are the methods finalize() and clone() declared as protected in Object class when any class that we write extends java.lang.Object? I mean what design considerations made them being declared as protected?

Object.clone() is protected so that it cannot be called unless the person writing the code intends it to be cloned.
In other words to make a class cloneable one must over-ride Object.clone() with a public method that does the cloning. In this way the method can only be called if an implementation of the mehtod has been coded.
Convinced this is poorly explained so reply if you don't get it!

Why are these files showing? and how do i get rid/hide them?

can anyone tell me a fix to hide these greyed/faded out files and folders? they are littered around EVERYWHERE on my mac, even in my external hard drive. Also, why is there a file called .DS_Store on my desktop? i've tried putting it in the trash and emptying it but it just appears again! thanks in advance.

Why are these problems starting to appear on OS 10.6.8?

Downloads and app updates hang for several seconds a couple of kb's short before finally completing.
Occasionally clicking on a bookmark, even repeatedly, fails to open the page.
When clicking back to a previous page I often get a message stating that the browser can't find the server. Clicking the "Try Again" button or clicking the page's bookmark fails to resolve the problem.
These problems occur no matter which of my five browsers i use so the problem must be in the system. Disk Utility, Disk Warrior and all my monitoring devices say everything "seems" to be ok.
What could the problem be?

It's rather difficult to diagnosis the issue, could be your machine, the router, the network or the ISP.
We can take some harmless procedures on your machine.
First backup your files off the machine to a regular storage drive (not TimeMachine or TimeCapsule) and disconnect this drive.
Next stick in the 10.6 disk that came with your computer (or upgrade) and reboot the machine holding the c key down, now simply install 10.6, will just overwrite OS X and bundled programs.
Reboot, log in and immediatly update to 10.6.8 under the Appel Menu>Software update, that will bring OS X and bundled programs current with your files and security updates.
What that did was basically kick any crap out of OS X itself (not users or applications) and make sure OS X itself is fine.
Next you may have to reinstall certain programs that place "hooks" into OS X, make sure they are updated to work with 10.6.8.
If your still having problems, it could be confined to your User, create another one in System Preferences, log into it and try things out again. If things are running normal there, you might decide to just use the "Users"/Shared folder to transfer your personal data to the new user, eventually deleting the old user. You need to have enough space on the drive to do this, preferable a external drive for transfer would be a better choice.
Lastly, if your problems return, it could be a program your running or installed. Or it could be a issue with your network.
Some ISP's are testing out IPv6, or are having DNS issues. Only time and using other networks can tell if this is the issue.
Another possibility is your WiFI has been compromised, it's either got a open, weak standard or weak password and someone is hogging your bandwidth where your not getting any.
Only WPA2 (AES) with a 20+ random character, letter, number, symbol, case password for both the Admin (kept off all machines) and a Guest Internet access password is strong enough to defeat these new "bot net based" and "GPU based" router cracking malware.
Another possibility is your router needs a firmware update. If it's older G, it's likely not going to get one as they all want you to buy N routers now.
The only thing I can suggest is try to develop a plan to narrow down the culprit, sometimes it's a loose cable that a tree branch fell and hit, slightly pulling the coax out of the connector someplace, analog TV connects fine, but then the Internet keeps dropping out.
You might have to install 10.6 on a external GUID OS X Extended (J) drive, hold option boot from it and see if the problems continue or not, if it's a hard drive issue.
Really hard to narrow something like this down, you just have to play detective and narrow down the possibilities.

Why are these fonts auto activating?

I've just updated to Tiger 10.4.8. One day later I install CS2 (previously had CS).
I use FontAgent Pro. Now, whenever I open Safari or any CS2 app. (just the app, not an actual document) a bunch of fonts are auto activated which I don't want to be activated, and as far as I know don't need to be activated. They are Devangari MT, Geeza Pro, Gujarati MT, Gurmukhi MT, Hirangino Kaku Gothic Pro, LiHei Pro, STHeiti, Times, and Photoshop also auto activates Osaka.
Can anyone throw any light on this? I've posted in the Adobe forum (as not really sure if it's a mac thing or an adobe thing) but had no answers. Thanks

It doesn't matter what manager a person may be using. If any of the Fonts folders have something in them, they will be active. Check these folders for the fonts.
/System/Library/Fonts/
/Library/Fonts/
~/Library/Fonts/ (the tilde means your home account)
The Adobe apps have their own folder at:
/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Fonts/
If there are any fonts in that folder you want to remove, do not remove the folder "Reqrd" or any of the items in it. The Adobe apps need those fonts to operate.

Why are these placed images blurry??

I created an image in Photoshop that has: resolution 72 pix/in, 600 px by 800 px (about the average screen size of ereaders)

When I Place the jpg image in Indesign, it looks blurry and pixelated: like this
I looked on other similar threads from google, but it seems those people hadn't been using the correct resolution of 72 dpi. But my images in Photoshop ARE at 72 dpi. Is there anything else you would recommend to do? I would really appreciate any help!

First off, for text like that youreally should just build the page in ID.
But to get the best preview, and that's what it it is, a preview, not the acutal pixels as you see in an editor like photoshop, use View > Display Performance > High Quality Display.

Why are these classes equal? Loaded from different classloaders.

I thought that classes loaded from different classloaders were seen as different in the JVM? But this code prints true to every check:

I figured out why they're all true though - it's because the jar file was in the classpath, so the classes were loaded by a different classloader (the same one). When I put the jar out of the classpath, the statments printed out like this:

Why are these SQL Exceptions coming?

I have developed a web based application in which I am experiencing two exceptions coming after a periodic time.
1)Exception : java.sql.SQLException: ORA-01000: maximum open cursors exceeded
2)Exception : java.sql.SQLException: The url cannot be null
The applications works fine when the webserver is restarted. What can be the probable reasons for these exceptions?

Why are these photos blurry?

I have a Canon Rebel T3i. I have taken a number of group photos w/tripod, w/o tripod, w/flash, w/o flash, various apertures, many on automatic mode. All on autofocus. All of them come out fuzzy, especially the people on the ends. The attached might look ok small on this web page, but if you download it and look at it 100% you will see what I mean. I have two T3i cameras and they both yield the same results. I would probably get a better photo with a phone. Any ideas?

Opanda EXIF software tells me that your sample shot was done with T3i and 18-135mm II lens at ISO 400, 1/60 shutter speed, f4 aperture with the lens zoomed to its widest 18mm and the camera doing all the exposure settings in Program mode. Also, the flash fired. All the recommendations about focusing technique are well and good. I'd also use a single AF point, manually selected. Probably the center one. Also I'd use One Shot as the most accurate of the viewfinder-based AF focusing modes. Alternatively, Live View focus could have been used, which is slower but can be even more accurate. It also can help with manual focus, if you do that instead, because you can magnify the Live View image up to 10X on most cameras that have it. In this case, I'd take several shots, refocusing each one. The reason is the lighting, which appears to be common fluorescent, which is notorious for "messing with" focus and metering accuracy. The reason is that fluorescent lamps cycle on and off at a high rate... 120 Hz in the US, 100 Hz in some othre parts of the world. This is so fast the human eye doesn't notice. But our cameras can and do see it... and can be fooled by it. However I think the main problem is that your are using an f4 aperture. Lenses are typically not at their best and sharpest at or very near their largest aperture. Stop down to f5.6 or f8 and I think you'll see a lot of improvement. To do so, you'll have to get out of Program mode and use Av or aperture value exposure mode instead. This still gives you the same auto exposure and flash performance, but will allow you to select the aperture, after which the camera will automatically set the appropriate shutter speed. You may need to set a higher ISO to get adequate shutter speed. Stopping the lens down also would give you more depth of field to work with. That can be very important because another concern is "field curvature". When your subjects are in a straight line and you focus on the one in the very middle, chances are that natural lens field curvature effects toward the edges will cause subjects there to be softer. This is more pronounced the wider angle the lens is... Ideally you would instead line up the people in a slight arc, where the ones on either end are a little closer to you. However, you'd be guessing or basing your posing on experience... because it's hard to see in the viewfinder. An easier solution is stopping down to increase depth of field, which will to some extend offset the field curvature problem. Using a wide angle lens present other possible problems, though. One is that there is inevitable optical distortions with wide lenses, one of which causes subjects nearer the edges to be exaggerated and look larger than they are. You can see some of this occuring in the ceiling light panels (which also show "perspective" distortion). But I'd also bet that the ladies at either end of the row don't have that large an arm, as the one nearest the edge of the image appears in the photo. This is called "anamorphic" distortion and is an optical effect that's unavoidable with wide angle lenses. It's one reason most portraiture is done with standard to short telephotos, instead. The best solution is to back up farther and zoom to the 30mm or 50mm range... i.e. to avoid using wide angles for group shots like this. But to do so will require adequate working space and a stronger flash. Which brings us to yet another consideration.... when shooting a Canon camera and flash in any of the auto-exposure modes, the camera will set exposure according to the ambient light, and then the flash will be fired as FILL.... about 1-2/3 stops underexposure automatically. If you want the flash to be the main or primary light source, you need to set the camera to M or Manual mode. So long as the flash is set to ETTL, the camera then will ignore ambient light for exposure calculations and will fire the flash as strongly as needed for illumination... In other words, you still get auto-exposure even though the camera is set to M. However, now it is being done with FULL flash. Only problem is, if you are using the camera's builit in flash, it may not have enough power for this wide a shot at this distance. Built-in flashes are notoriously wimpy. Why are these websites blocked?

Several major websites in China have recently become inaccessible from BT (but not from other networks). E.g.
news.baidu.com
tv.sohu.com
Why is this?
