Why are trackpad settings resetting at each boot?

Trackpad resets itself after each boot.  Does anyone know why and what can be done to fix this?  Thanks.

You might try this one fix, which is to reset the non-volatile memory, or NVRAM using open firmware.
To boot into open firmware, hold down the cmd-option-O-F key combination at power on until you get a white terminal screen with dark lettering. Type the following three commands:
*reset-nvram <cr>*
*set-defaults <cr>*
*reset-all <cr>*
The last command will cause a reboot. It may do some good, it may not.
If it doesn't help things out, then the next thing to look at would be the backup battery. Unfortunately, Panasonic quit making the 3.7 volt CGL3032 six years ago, which is a problem. You can get pulled battery/circuit board assemblies, but unless the battery has been replaced with something newer, it's likely going to be weak or non working.
Adventuresome folks can get [a replacement battery|http://www.ifixit.com/PowerBook-Parts/PowerBook-G4-PRAM-Battery/IF154-1 22], which requires some soldering skill, to replace the original.

  • Why are Network Settings not Transferring from a Master DMG to the Desitination

    Hi people,
can anyone assist me with finding out why Network Settings are NOT transferred from a source Master HD to a DMG to a Destination HD.
I have many hours spent trying to debug this - any pointers to a solution would be greatly appreciated.
    Background:
I administer about 400 Macs of mixed types / generations (iMacs - MacBooks - MacBook Pro's).
We create master setups for different locations / purposes around the Campus and transfer these masters to DMGs.
We then clone the various macs as needed from these DMGs using a variety of methods including local (FW800 - USB) and network transfers.
The newest master (staffHD at 10-8-2) works perfectly but trying to clone / copy it by any method leaves out the custom network settings and you only end up with the default Wi-Fi / Ethernet / Firewire with total loss of the additional services and custom proxy settings.
Methods used to date to try the transfer (all get the same null result)
    to-from DMG using Disk Utility
to-from Sparse Image via Disk Utility
to-from DMG using Carbon Copy Cloner
to-from Sparse Image via Carbon Copy Cloner
direct to 'target disk' via FW800 using Disk Utility
direct to 'target disk via FW800 using Carbon Copy Cloner
direct to 'target disk via FW800 using rsync -aHv
direct to 'target disk via FW800 using cp -Rv
Everything BUT the network settings transfer perfectly (excluding of course the usual trackpad / mouse custom settings).
I guess something is wrong with this master source but for the life of me I can't work it out. I have seen it in the past but it seemed to work itself out with the next revision - this one just wont.
    HELP!

    Hi Linc,
thanks for the reply - I suspected a hardware issue or some sort of privledges problem, but as far as I know have only had this problem with Mountain Lion, and it still fails on hardware like to like transfers. I was hoping to avoid needing anything addidtional but it looks like I'll have to.

  • Why are the settings in system preference changed itself?

the settings always change back to how they were before itself. for example, in trackpad i have been choosing to use "tap to click" and after a while it will automatically untick the box for me. so as the highlight color that i have been choosing different color but ended up it still change back to blue... what should i do about that?

    Back up all data now.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. You can demote it back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:20 ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ 2> /dev/null
Be sure to select the whole line by triple-clicking anywhere in it. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar. A text window opens.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    resetpassword
That's one word with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window opens. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.

  • OSX 10.4.8-mouse and trackpad settings reset

Another problem after the 10.4.8 update: whenever I plug in my mouse (Razer Diamondback) or modify the mouse driver settings, the trackpad and mouse tracking speeds reset to the lowest values. I've repaired disk permissions. Anything I can do?
(I know that Razer gaming mice typically do not have Mac drivers, but the Mac driver for the Razer Pro is exactly the same thing)

    Hi there,
I am having the same problem with my Powerbook G4. Since last update of OS, them ouse settings are lost all the time I reboot (normal Apple wireless mouse). I checked and I can not do all of the other changes in the other properties and also can not change system password. Nothing gets saved. When I try to run theupdater again I get message that the file can not be mounted.
VERY BAD. Could not find a solution yet

  • Why are proxy settings not honored

I set up SSH as a proxy server on my laptop when I'm on a public network, and configure Firefox to use the proxy by filling in the Manual Proxy config.
If SSH is not running, I get this error message, as expected: "The proxy server is refusing connections" when I try to access any site EXCEPT Google.
Google searches and access to Google.com always work, even when the proxy server is not up. That seems broken.
When the proxy server IS up, Google searches do not appear to use it.
Google is my default search provider. If I try to access Bing, Firefox acts as expected (no access when proxy is down, debug spew indicating new connections when proxy is up). If I change Bing to be the default search provider, the behavior of both remains the same (Bing uses proxy, Google does not).
Why does access to Google (and only Google?) ignore the proxy settings? Are there other "magic" sites that would also ignore the proxy? I use the proxy because I want to protect my internet traffic when I'm on public networks, but if Firefox can randomly just ignore them for some sites but not others, how can I trust it?

My misconfiguration. I realized that any site that used https was working, while others were not.
Somehow the "Use this proxy server for all protocols" got unchecked. Checking it fixes the issue.

  • Why are my render files in my boot drive/root directory?

I have configured FCP to use an external drive for my Scratch Disk to render Video Capture, Audio Capture, Video Render and Audio Render as well as the Waveform Cache, Thumbnail Cache and Autosave Vault. Plenty of room on it and for the most part, I see a lot of render files on it, just like it should do.
However, if I leave FCP running for a while, it will start to auto-render again and does so placing tons of huge files on my local boot drive right on the root directory under a folder called "Render Files". It ends up filling up my boot drive every time and need to delete them.
I have searched everywhere to find where to configure this to move it to my scratch drive, but no joy.
How do I get FPC to render these files on a non-boot drive scratch disk?
    Thanks.

That's possible that's it going to sleep. But I don't think so. The problem happens when I let the editor sit too long without doing anything in it (get up for a cup of coffee, using another application to generate some text effects, etc). Then its starts rendering on its own and does so only with the local boot drive/root directory.
When it comes back, the "green line" (Preview Render) is gone and the lines are replaced with dark blue, which I think indicates the sequence was rendered in the highest possible res/codec I have selected. That's fine, but why does it insist on using the local drive when I have another specified?

  • MBP one long beep. Have to reset PRAM each boot.

Ok, so I had partitioned my drive for Ubuntu (just 5 GB), installed it, and installed rEFIt (boot menu for mutliple boots). At some time around when I installed Ubuntu and updated (I don't recall exactly when), I started to get the long single tone after I had just been in an OS, but not after I had force restarted. Screen doesn't show anything, I can hear the fan, and it doesn't make that sound like some hardware is starting up (rather loud noise, I assume it's the optical drive). Now, it takes me a few tries each time after I had been in an OS, but I can get it running if I reset to PRAM. I also reset the SMC. I removed rEFIt from the startup items and the "efi" folder. I even removed the Ubuntu partition and it still happens. When I installed Ubuntu, I installed the GRUB on the same partition as Ubuntu itself, and didn't touch the other partitions. After I had initially partitioned my HDD via DiskUtility via the Insall DVD, and restarted my computer, it was normal. I believe it might have been normal too after I restarted after initally installing Ubuntu (though I don't think it actually turned all the hardware off, but rather restarted the OS itself). No data loss (asides from my later removal of the Ubuntu partition). I also tried reseating the RAM, didn't do anything though.
(Also, I had previously successfully installed Ubuntu on a partition before, but my drive failed and Apple replaced it for me.)
    Solutions?
Know the source of the issue?
    Thanks.

  • Why are my earbuds so loud with Boot Camp?

I recently installed Windows 7 Professional with Boot Camp, and when I plugged in my apple headphones I found the volume to be extremely loud. The highest I could go on the volume setting was to maybe around 10 before it got too loud. I've tried to repair the drivers (I even went so far as to redownload the support software and then repair the drivers), but they still had an extremely high volume cap. It's as though the max volume on OSX is near the minimum of Windows 7, and if I raise the volume higher on Windows 7, it goes well beyond the maximum on OSX. I realize that I can go into the mixer and change the volume settings for applications so that they do not seem as loud, but it's inconvenient to do that every time I open an application for the first time, and it doesn't eliminate the problem at the source of it all. Should I try to remove the drivers altogether and then reinstall them (which should be easy using the Boot Camp support software), or is it as simple as activating or deactivating an audio setting somewhere? I realize this is a minor problem but any help would be greatly appreciated. By the way I have a 2011 Macbook Pro 13" with an i5 processor, if that's any help.
    Thanks!

Those are very, very high temperatures and very high fan speeds just trying to cool things down.
Now - which applications or processes are turning up the heat? Open Activity Monitor (Applications>Utilities) and select "All Processes" and sort by CPU %:
Then post your screenshot (http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4391) using the little camera icon in the composition bar at the top of your reply.

  • ColdFusion Builder 3 RDS and Remove Server settings reset on each restart

I have CF Builder 3 Trial installed as standalone application. Every time I restart CF Builder, the RDS mapping settings for the remote server I have are gone and also the remote ColdFusion server I set up is gone and I need to recreate it. Is there anything I can do to prevent that from happening? Thank you for any help on this issue, so far I spent few hours searching for a fix but can't find anything.

I just verified the same problem on Dan's thread as well!
The difference between Bawcior and myself is that I lose the server from server view however I don't lose the RDS entry...  I just upgraded to version 3.0.3.290701 and the error persists.
    I'm running Windows 8.1 Pro (64 bit)

OK. Today I updated another system in my office and has the same problem; upon reboot the pager sets itself to "Desktop 1", "Desktop 2" ...
I'm inclined to think, now, that this is a bug.
Any one out there with some ideas to work around the problem?

  • User mouse settings reset on each login

    Hi there,
A little while ago I set my wife up with her own user account on my 2011 27" iMac (running Maverick). I went in and changed the wireless mouse preferences (specifically enabled the right-click function). Each time she logs out and logs back in to her account the mouse preferences have reset. Is there some way to set it so that the mouse preferences, once changed, remain changed?
    Thanks.

Because I do not use Mavericks I cannot relate exactly to the problem, however, I notice the following and wonder how far down this line you have progressed.
Systems Prefs > Mouse > Go to purple ? in bottom r/h corner) > Using an Apple Magic Mouse > Related topics > setting up wireless keyboard and mouse > Related topics >  (in blue, bottom of page) click on Bluetooth.   There you will find a long list of items, hopefully that includes one that will apply to your problem.

  • Re: Contacts - Why are there 3 duplicates of each contact?

As the title says; there are 3 duplicates of each contact in my Contacts app Version 9.0 (1498) w/ OS X 10.10 ( I think this was an issue with Mavericks as well). Also, only the first contact shows 2 "iCloud"'s underneath "cards" info (picture below), whereas the 2 other duplicates do not. No duplicate contacts with synced iPhone iOS 7.1.2.

You should only have 1 iCloud account and there may be the same contact in On My Mac. Go to System Preferences/iCloud and de-select Contacts. Check to see how many you have. Contacts/Preferences/Accounts - disable one iCloud account and delete the On My Mac.

  • Why are mouse settings defaulting after 'switch user'?

change mouse settings from default for user A
    switch to user B
    switch back to user A
changes to mouse settings have been wiped and the default mouse settings restored
What is causing this and how can I prevent it from happening?
I've tried various things with user A like logging off entirely, rebooting, even making other changes in the settings that require an admin password in the hope that this might force some sort of admin override

Close all windows and quit all applications.
Hold the option key down and click the "Go" menu in the Finder menubar.
Select "Library" from the dropdown, then "Preferences" folder.
    Look for these two files.
    com.apple.desktop.plist
    com.apple.systempreferences.plist
Right click each  one of those and select " Move To Trash" from the contextual menu.
    Restart the computer.
