Why aren't fonts displaying properly in documents?

When I open documents in Word for Mac11 the fonts do not display until I select all the text and change the font.  In pages, Arial does not display properly and I always have to change it to Arial Unicode.  Does anyone know solution(s)?

Now that explanation is different to the first. We assumed because this is a Pages forum, it was a Pages issue.
You appear to have PC users sending you documents from older systems using a different Arial font. It may be as subtle as a difference in name.
Word unfortunately installs its own set of fonts, some with very similar names but different formats. Fonts come in a wide variety of formats and not all are Unicode which is a standardised method of addressing all the possible characters of all the possible languages of the world.
There are also some formats such as PC Type 1 PostScript fonts that do not translate at all to OSX. OSX is pretty tolerant and flexible but it does use its own methods of displaying and setting fonts. Microsoft has its own methods. Whilst there is considerable overlap it is not perfect.
TextEdit has better compatibility with Word, have you tried opening the Word documents there to see what happens? Also if Pages reports a missing font and you have to replace it, take careful note of the missing font name and see if you can locate it on your system and possibly open it with Font Book.

  • How to have fonts display properly in iTunes?

I have a lot of foreign songs that are named in non-latin alphabet. iTunes displays gibberish. Is there a way for them to display properly?

If your episodes (posts) within a podcast contain suitable playable media files they will show in iTunes, but the URLs must be within 'enclosure' tags' and be of the acceptable formats. As you've evidently got a podcast in the Store (I assume) you must have episodes with media, so you need to do whatever you did with those if you have episodes which aren't showing: there have been a number of cases of people not having followed the correct procedure in Wordpress and so having episodes not showing, but I'm afraid I can't advise on the specifics.
The acceptable media are.mp3. .m4a, .m4v, .mp4 and .mov - not Flash (.swf), YouTube or any sort of embedded media player.

  • Why do my images display properly in Preview, but online they're botched?

I assume that this is a CSS problem, and I have read and reread the code many times, but I can't track down the problem. It Previews fine in Safari, and Opera and Firefox, but when I put it online, I have two problems.
This Page may be seen at www.eccentricartistsgardens.com
Over the bottom of the logo at the top-left there is a gray-green rectangle the width of the logo and obliterating the bottom of the logo. It shouldn't be there, and I can't figure out where it came from.
The background image for the textblock on the bottom-right side is not displaying properly; it's only filling half its space. Again, I don't know why this is happening, since it Previews just fine.
The gray block on the upper-right is supposed to be an Image Show, a Dreamweaver extension from Extend Studio. I'm waiting for word from Extend Studio as to why that isn't loading and working like it should.
The first two problems are what I am hoping that someone will be able to point the way for me.
    Thanks,
    Merle

  • Incorrect font display in pdf document(web view)

    Adobe helpers,
I am encountering a  very peculiar problem with incorrect display of fonts in pdf documents when viewed in a web browser. Briefly, the problem typically affects  the first page of a pdf document, the font being displayed as an unidentified mix of large and very small, skinny type.  Other pages may or may not be affected, and if one back-clicks to the previous page the text often displays the correct font, so the problem is in some (but not all) cases non-persistent.  The problem however is resolved completely if I uncheck the 'display pdf in browser' option  under edit>preferences in adobe reader. Fonts I use include Arial, Cambria, Franklin Gothic Book, and Garamond; as straight-up pdfs, the documents look fine. FYI, I have Adobe reader X 10.0.1 (Win 7) and 9.0 (Win XP sp3) installed on two different machines. Firefox 3.6 and IE9 are equally at fault. FWIW, all the pdf documents begin life as MS Word or Publisher 2010 documents, which are converted to pdf within these applications before publishing to web.   Since I can't control how people choose to view web pdfs, I'm concerned that display of the prone documents is impaired when viewed in a web browser.
Not sure if this is a reader, browser, or distiller problem but this seems a logical place to start looking for answers. Any thoughts?
    Thanks!

I've also had problems printing with Reader X.
When printing an attachment from an email in Outlook, if I don't open the attachment first, sometimes it doesn't print correctly as everything shows with the following number or letter. Example 12345 will print as "23456" and invoice will show as "jowpjdf". Even if I open the attachment, sometimes it will print the first page ok, but the next pages will "mppl mjlf uijt".
Never had this problem with previous versions.

  • Why are the fonts displayed larger in Mountain Lion?

    Hi,
I have upgrade a 4 year old (ish) iMac from Snow Lepoard to Mountain Lion, and all my documents now seem to be display the fonts larger post upgrade then they did before the upgrade.
For example I have a spread sheet with an Arial 10 font, the font actully is displaying as something that looks closer to 14 point font.
Any ideas how I get to display the fonts at a normal level?
Oh and whats up with the brightness?  I have it set to zero for the display to be usable :s
    Thanks.
    Gavin

I dont think it is, thats the first thing I checked.  The Resolution is set at, best for builtin display, Ihave tried sitting to the highest setting and to the one below that just to make sure it was actually picking the best resoloution, I might try that again, and load the offending documents and see what happens.
On the other hand the menu, and applications seem to render correctly, the only place I am currenlly sure I am seeing this is at shut down, and with open office.
I will check for an update to open office.
Currently repairing permissions to see if that helps.
    Thanks

  • Why aren't fonts sharp?

Hi there! Just recently bought my Mac Mini 2011(i5, intel gpu), and I find it very, very frustrating to work on - the fonts are just messing with my eyes, and it's very tiring to work with it. I always used to do all my programming work on Windows machines, and font there is always sharp and crispy. On the Mac however, it looks like somebody used too much antialiasing.
To ilustrate, here's a picture of the same section of code, displayed both by windows and by mac - and that is the same monitor, using the same HDMI cable, I just connected it first to my laptop, and then to the mini.
    Windows:

    Mac:
    http://i.imgur.com/Gte76.jpg
Is there absolutely anything that can be done about it? I can't work like this, it makes my eyes feel tired.

Hi, is this hooked to some kind TV type Monitor that does it's own anti-aliasing?
If you set the Mac to do Screen Sharing & connect with the PC, does the Mac's display on the PC show the same problem?

  • I have a number of playlists configured to play songs I haven't heard in a while. They then drop off the playlist once they've played. When I use my iPhone, however, the songs stay on the iPhone version of the playlist. Why aren't they syncing properly?

I don't like Apple's algorithm that constantly pushes the same songs at me, so I have a couple of playlists configured for songs I haven't listened to in a month, two months, etc. This has worked fine for years. Since I've gotten my iPhone 4S, however, things are goofy.  The songs are marked as played and fall off of the playlist on iTunes, but they stay on the playlist on the iPhone, which means they come up again and again in the shuffle of that playlist. Even if I sync the iPhone the songs are still on the version of the playlist on the phone and I can't figure out a way to "refresh" that playlist and get rid of them. I know this is my own particular quirk about my music, but it's worked with every other iPod I've had. I don't know why the iPhone is holding on to a different version of the playlist than the one on iTunes. Is there a setting I'm missing somewhere?
My iTunes is on a MacBook running Snow Leopard.

    Lynn,
I had a very similar issue (same playlist).  After several frustrating hours of various combinations I was able to sync by changing the options to "manuall sync.." and then "dragging and dropping" the needed playlist from the iTunes Playlist list to the iPhone button (on my itunes setup/view that was from the far left column list of all of my  playlist in iTunes to the far upper right "iPhone" button).  To sum up "checking" the playlist and syncing didnt work, "drag and droping" the playlist did... at least for now... then I unselected the "manually manage" in the options and re-synced and all playlist were synced correctly.  Good Luck.

  • Why won't tabs display properly when composing e-mails in mail?

When I compose an e-mail in Mail, often the window won't display the top row of tabs (send, attachment, etc.).  I can see the tip of each graphic, but it's almost like they've been cropped out.  Does anyone know what might be causing this and how to correct it?  Thanks in advance.

    yldawg,
Try going to the mail menu, view click on hide toolbar, and clicking show toolbar (or visa versa) depending what shows. I haven't used this os in a long time, so I'm not sure how it is set up anymore.

  • Why are my Add-on Bar items halfway hidden, and why won't they display properly?

    [http://download343.mediafire.com/29kbvy9b609g/uzw78f3vqf688mb/Add-on+Bar+Glitch.PNG Glitched Add-on Bar photo]
After using the new Firefox 4 for just a few days, I've noticed that my Add-on Bar items (mail notifier and weather bar) are jutted down below the actual visible display area they should be, so I can see half of the icons. This is not a priority issue, but it is still an issue, and it bothers me. I've already tried uninstalling then reinstalling Firefox 4, I've already tried removing then reinstalling the add-ons themselves, and I've also tried just hiding then showing the Add-on Bar but still nothing is changed. This problem only occurs when I use themes for Firefox 4 other than the default theme. The attached photo is a screenshot of my Add-on Bar so you hopefully won't think I'm crazy.

I've figured this out. Apparently, there is a graphical bug in FF4 when the "Show: Icons and Text" option under customizing the toolbar is enabled, and the Downloads icon is in the Add-on Bar, the Downloads icon remains centered, but the other items in the Add-on Bar are pushed under the display area of the Add-on Bar. If the setting is reverted back to just icons or just text shown, or if the Downloads icon is removed from the Add-on Bar, this is fixed. A simple line of code could fix this coincidental error, but as I said before, it's not a priority issue. As always, I can just click Ctrl+J to show my current downloads. I just tried to have this icon in the newly named Add-on Bar to replicate my old-fashioned Firefox 3.6 interface, but I guess that's unreasonable for Mozilla...

  • Any reason why safari does not display properly ?

Notice how jumbled the various short cuts look in the top left section of the safari homepage? Too small to read, too jumbled to use.
That's why I use Opera. But surely this is not normal? It has always been like this on my Mac. Any clues out there?
    Derek

Safari Extensions is listed under About Safari. If I click it it takes me to the world of Safari extensions....and all that is available. Preferences takes me to my choices ie Opera as my default browser...
I don't remember ever installing any extensions, this was a reconditioned Mac already with Safari (thought they were standard with Macs?
Sorry, not getting anywhere here. Appreciate all the help from both responses.

  • Why aren't reviews displayed in search

i search for an app...say "best photography app" and a bunch of photography apps are shown.  you used to be able to search by relevance (price, ratings/reviews), date launched, etc. but now all of that is missing and you have to open each app individually to see the reviews.  super annoying.  anyone?

Are you still on iOS 3 or 4 (Settings > General > About > Version) ? If you are then you will get the thumnbail/page browsing - tabbed browsing was introduced on iOS 5, os if you want tabbed browsing in Safari then you will need to update the iOS

  • Fonts not displaying properly after 10.0 update (Mac OS X)

After I updated to Firefox 10.0, almost all websites now default to Times Roman, even after I have set Helvetica as my default font as well as have checked "allow pages to choose their own fonts".
I tried trashing prefs, reinstalling the previous version of FF but to no avail.
Never had this issue before and all fonts are displaying properly in Safari and Chrome.
    Any ideas?

Ok repaired permissions and now ''some'' fonts display properly but some are still times roman. Even explicitly setting fonts in Firebug doesn't change them...

  • Fonts don't display properly

Sorry if this has already been answered - I wasn't able to see a previous question like this so...
I am unable to have certain fonts display properly, most troubling is the lack of the Greek alphabet. For instance, changing or typing a letter "b" in Symbol font does nothing. I notice that the font appears to be applied to the text, but it is obviously NOT a "beta". I have also noticed this happens with Wingdings and other fonts like it. Even copy/paste into iPages doesn't work.
Doing a similar thing in software programs outside of iWork is no problem and it does work, so I know I have the fonts (and they're properly installed, etc).
What do I do to get Greek Letters in iPages?

What do I do to get Greek Letters in iPages?
While switching to the old Symbol font may still work for Greek in some apps, modern Unicode apps and OS's do not input different scripts by changing fonts. They change keyboard layouts instead. So you go to system prefs/international/input menu and check the box for Greek, plus the box for Show Input Menu in Finder, select Greek in the "flag" menu at the top right of the Finder, and type.
For individual characters it may be easier to use the Character Palette (Edit > Special Characters) as Yvan indicated.

  • Can't Get Fonts to Display Properly in Reader

I have a poster I'm trying to make available in a PDF file on the web.
The file displays properly if it's started/loaded directly on a
computer. But, when the file is downloaded from the web using a
browser and viewed in the browser the fonts are screwed up.
The fonts are embedded in the pdf file.
How do I make the fonts display properly in the browser downloaded
    file?
