Why can't I build PostgreSQL docbook docs?

I need to build PostgreSQL CVS-HEAD docs. To get them you just fetch:
cvs -d :pserver:[email protected]:/projects/cvsroot login
(any, but not empty, password)
cvs -d :pserver:[email protected]:2401/projects/cvsroot co pgsql
After getting pgsql, I did:
./configure \
--prefix=/home/pgdba/work \
--with-pgport=5850 \
--with-gnu-ld
(options are not really important).
At the end of configure output it shows:
checking for onsgmls... onsgmls

checking for jade... jade
checking for DocBook V4.2... no
checking for DocBook stylesheets... no
checking for collateindex.pl... no
checking for xsltproc... xsltproc
checking for osx... osx
And this is despite the fact that I do have docbook v4.2:

docbook-xml 4.5-3
docbook-xsl 1.74.0-1
docbook2x 0.8.8-7
I described the problem with more details on http://archives.postgresql.org/pgsql-ge … g00325.php - there was also some short lived discussion which ended with suggestion to report bug in docbook packages in arch.
Is there any way to build those docs? Can anyone with greater knowledge of arch look at the problem?

If you can't edit the file once it's converted to Word, it could be that the PDF was created from a scanned page, and then image text wasn't converted to searchable text. ExportPDF should perform Optical Character Recognition by default, but it can be disabled in Reader. Do you know whether OCR was disabled when you converted the page? If it wasn't, make sure that the correct language was selected for OCR. This option appears at the bottom of the ExportPDF panel in Reader, and in the Document Language (for Text Recognition) pop-up menu that appears after you select your file to convert in the ExportPDF online service.
If everything seems to have been set correctly, and you still can edit the text, please try triple-clicking to select the text in Word. Did that do the trick?

why can't I open my numbers docs after upgrade to 3.0? I have downloaded Maverick. I had the same problem with Pages at first. Is there any way to get my spreadsheets back? I'm nervous about upgrades anymore.

If you recently updated to Mavericks and updated the Numbers to 3.0 then it is likely you are trying to open a Numbers 3.0 file with Numbers 2.3.

Be sure you are careful about which version you are launching and using to open files. If you want to be able to open a file in Numbers 2.3 then you should continue using Numbers 2.3 (which is located in the folder "/Applications/iWork '09")
If you already opened a Numbers file in 3.0 and saved if but want to open in 2.3 you can export from Numbers 3.0 by using the menu item "File > Export To > Numbers '09..."

Why can't I save my TextEdit doc??? No permission.

I'm finding it impossible to save a TextEdit doc. I created it afresh from scratch and now it says I don't have permission to save it. Is this ridiculous when i am the ownber and the only user on the machine???

When the doc is not even saved yet, how on earth can I select the file in Finder and change its permissions so I can save it????
This seems ridiculous to me.
Also, how can I change my entire computer system so that it stops asking me to authenticate every little thing, such as moving a file from one folder another? It's tedious and unnecessary. I understand for installations etc, but just moving files around??? Sheesh.

Back up all data now.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
Step 1
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:20 ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ 2> /dev/null
Be sure to select the whole line by triple-clicking anywhere in it. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
Step 2
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar. A text window opens.
In the Terminal window, type this:
resetpassword
That's one word with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window opens. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.

Why can't Time Machine backup iDisk Docs?

Ah, but I think it is already backed up by Time Machine. It is harder to find particular files, but if you know when it was correctly there, I believe that you can restore it as follows:
Go to user/library/FileSync then
Open TimeMachine
Go back to the correct saveset then
choose the sparsebundle and restore it.
You will be given a location to restore to so don't worry about it overwriting your iDisk. Once restored, you can double-click the new sparseinage to open a disk image and find the individual files.

Why can 2 users open same Illustrator doc?

We have design files which are used between different departments and have come across a problem where 2 people can open and ammend the same file without any type of warning dialog or box saying " User X is currently working in this document"
In previous programs (before migrating to Illustrator this season) there has always been some kind of warning box. Illustrator will only show a dialog after both people have ammended a file and they come to save the file. The dialog then tells the person who opened the file the latest that the file has been ammended since opening leaving one person with work they cannot use
Can anyone suggest a way around this problem or software to track open docs etc?

Sounds more like a misconfiguration in your network environment, possibly those two users logging on with the same credentials and thus sharing teh same permissions....

Why can't I open some word docs on the iPad2?

Someone at my work has an iPad2. He has a problem of not able to open some word docs. Does anyone reconize this and what is the solution? Thank you.

Why can't i see my reader docs?

when i click a link i get the windows frame & the dark grey box. when i click a scanned document i can't see anything but the border of the frame. if i leave the box open long enough i get this message There is a problem with adobe acrobat/reader. if it is running, please exit and try again (103:103). i've tried everything, searched the internet and the forum. Of course, you are assuming iMessage has been activated on both ends of the conversation. If not, messages to/from other iPhone users will be sent/received as SMS/MMS messages just as to/from any other platform and NOT as iMessages.
Not all iPhone users use iMessage as it will use data vs free unlimited texting available in the More Everything plan. Another reason I don't personally use iMessage is because I like to access my messages on multiple devices from within Verizon Messages + which you just can't do when you have some messages sent as iMessages and others sent as SMS/MMS messages.

Why can't I open my Pages doc on my desktop?

I created a flyer last week and put it on my iMac desktop. I tried to open it this morning to print it out but a window came up saying I needed to update to the latest version of Pages. When I clicked Learn More, it took me to a page where I would have to buy it for $19.99. Yesterday I updated to the latest OS on my iPhone. I'm pretty sure it is synchronized with my Mac. Would that have screwed this up?
My techie told me to check for more than one Pages in Applications but only one is there.
Any help is very much appreciated.

You have 2 versions of Pages (or Numbers, or Keynote) on your Mac.
Pages 5 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5/5.01 can not open Pages 5.1 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5.1 sometimes can not open its own files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Apple has not only managed to confuse all its users, but also itself.
Note: Apple has removed over 100 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:

Why can't I open pdf or docs attachments? Save to file comes up but when clicked I cannot find where it goes

I click on attachment, nothing happens, it says scanning file then nothing. The save to computer option is up but when I click on it, it looks like something may happen for a second then nothing - don't know where it goes. I want to open file and view then have choice to save! Just like it used to before today!

I spent hours building a photo album for my parents only to find out that because my mac is earlier than 2007, even though I have 10.6.8, I can no longer order?! What is with that? This makes no sense. I can go online to various "photo shop" place and regardless of the OS and computer I am working from I can order a photo album so why can I no longer do this through iPhoto on my MAC?
How do I order my album now? If somebody could please explain as I am going home in 1 month and really wanted to surprise my aging parents with this book.
