Why did Apple design the iPad to permanently disable without ANY means to recover data just by virtue of someone trying to enter the wrong password? What is the logic behind this design decision?

Daughter unknowingly attempts to access iPad by entering wrong passwords. This leads to the iPad being disabled. It contains home videos that have not been backed up. This is a common scenario that Apple has made no effort to solve. Why does this continue to be a problem? It is outrageous that a device should permanently disable like this for NO GOOD REASON. Apple - Please address this issue in iOS 8.2. This should not happen. It makes no logical sense for the iPad to do this. No sense whatsoever.

See where it says Backup ? Turn it on, that's all it takes.

  • Why did Apple omit the Panorama feature in Camera on the Ipad, when they did the IOS6 update?

Why did Apple omit the Panorama feature in Camera on the Ipad, when they did the IOS 6 Update? They included this feature on the iPod touch (5th gen) so why not on the iPad?

I was on vacation in a national park and saw people using their iPads as a video camera...one of them standing in the  middle of a 'river' (read really large stream) at the time.
I'm going to also go with the supposition of it being a different camera and probably different video handling processor. The iPhone is quite far ahead of the iPad camera wise, so probably has better protocols in place to handle images, especially something as complex as the 'live photo stitch' of the panorama.
many existing cameras take what the panorama was, a 'photo stitch' where mulitple side by side photos are stitched together into one large panorama. This just appears to do it 'live' instead of individual shots that need to be processed on a comptuer to make the panorama.

  • Why O Why did Apple removed the sidebar colors?

Why O Why did Apple removed the sidebar colors in the new Aperture update? I used those colors to organize my workflow.
Everything is Greyscale now. Isn't Photography all about colors? If I wanted a greyscale user interface I would have bought a PC ...

It's the new design since Lion - Iphoto already has gone gray before Aperture See these links:
Re: After updating to Aperture 3.3 all my icons appears in Black and white. This includes the inspect button, photo stream button, the Facebook / flicker share button. Could you please help here ?
How to bring back the color: (for experienced users only)

  • In Lion, why did Apple remove the up/down arrows in the scroll bars?  There is currently no way to move up and down in small increments.  WHY????

Every mac operating system software until Lion had the ability to use up/down arrows in the scroll bar.  This makes it easy to move up and down in small increments.  In Lion, it is impossible to move up and down in small increments.  Click on the scroll bar and it moves up or down an entire page.  When you try to put the curser on the scrollbar and move it up just a little, it moves a whole bunch.  With the up/down arrows, you can click on the arrow and it will scroll ulp or down one line a time.  There is no way to do this in Lion. Why would apple remove the very useful feature of up and down arrows.

    Yes, agreed a missing element.
Did you try using the up / down arrows on the key board.

  • So why did Apple REMOVE the option to RATE an app when you delete it?

This is a step backwards. I download and try hundreds of games/apps and usually delete them from my phone when done but with iOS4, you can't RATE them as you delete them. Why was this feature removed?

Apple actually talked about why they did this. They did so at the request of developers who thought that it was unfair to their apps. Asking users to rate an app when they were deleting it meant it was far more likely to get a negative review. After all, if a user is deleting an app it likely means they weren't enamored of the app in the first place.
I suppose this would be fine if it was balanced by also asking users to rate their apps at other times during regular usage when they were more likely satisfied with the app, but that wasn't the case. All in all I think developers had a fair point and I'm glad Apple removed the feature.

  • Why did Apple make the new iPod unable to use Griffin iTalk or iTrip?

I was so disappointed when I upgraded to the new 5th gen. iPod and was unable to use the accessories I purchased for my previous iPod. Am I missing something? What am I supposed to do? Is there an attachment that will make them usable? Why would Apple make a new iPod that wouldn't include the same connector?

See below your so-called answer to my question.
I also noticed you have marked it solved. If, as a moderator, you can say that your response was considerate of the people using the system then I guess it was solved. If I was to mark it I would say the reply was very condescending and thus worthy of a 1 out of 10 as far as a reply goes. In the future please do not answer my posts as I would like to be treated with a little respect as I'm sure you would like. Please get some other Mod who can perhaps relate to a person's concern. Your answer may be correct but your way of putting it across sounds like some of the 13 year old school children I use to teach.

  • Why did apple remove the superdrive from the current mac mini model?

Also why does the standalone superdrive (USD $79) ONLY work with server version of the current Mac Mini?  Does not make sense.  Was just thinking of buying a mac mini when they changed the line about 2 months ago.  I still use DVD's and CD's as I am sure a lot of people out there still do.
It has made me rethink the purchase of the current mac mini - since the standalone superdrive only works with the server version.  I wanted to purchase the 2.3Ghz - 500 GB version - but if that does not work with the superdrive - then no good for me.
The Intel core 2 core duo was the one I wanted and it was perfect for me - but the day I went to purchase was the day the new version was announced - apple is not even offering refurbished one of this model (I have looked at that area of www.apple.com) and everywhere I look on ebay for this version - people are selling them for so much more.  I wanted to buy this new from apple.
Getting rid of the drive was not the best idea just yet - CD's and DVD's are still so ubiquitious.
Anyone have any other suggestions on how to get my hands on a brand new Intel core 2 duo from apple?
I already have an Imac and a Macbook Pro already wanted to add to my apple collection.

  • Why did Apple remove the Hold-Menu/Backlight function?

I just updated to ipod software version 1.1.1 and wondering why the "Hold Menu to switch Backlight on/off" function was replaced with "Hold Menu to return to Main Menu" function???
Ive been a huge fan of the Menu-Backlight switch since my 4G ipod, as I prefer to always keep the Backlight off and use it only when I absolutely cannot read the screen. I find it saves significant battery life compared to even the 2 second Backlight Timer. In the dark, this function is very practical especially since performing a simple operation such as adjusting volume or skipping tracks doesnt require any backlight. Also, I take a dark ghetto commuter bus and try hard to not draw attention to my 5G ipod with a bright glow from within my jacket pocket.
Why cant Apple offer an option in Settings menu or an alternative version with different Hold-Menu functionality?

Well the beauty of the old Hold-Menu>Backlight function was that it was basically a quick on/off switch...light turns on...light turns off...whereas the new "Quick Return to Main Menu" function didnt really solve a problem. If you need to get return to the main menu, you can blindly press Menu repeatly until you reach the main menu, how hard is that? Also, you only need to press Menu a maximum 4 times to reach the Main Menu from any submenu (unless youve created multiple subfolder hiearchies within the Notes folder.
My point is, as a result of elimination of the Backlight "switch" is increased precise navigation, which equals a loss in usability and practicality. So what happens when you suddenly need to use backlight? You either prepare in advance, lets say everyday before you head home from the office, you need to remember to set the Backlight Timer on. Or you face the scenario where it gets kinda dark by the time you leave the office, but you forgot to turn on the Backlight Timer...now what? Well look for some well lit place to change the settings, or if you can blindly navigate to the main menu and scroll carefully and precisely to the Backlight option. Ok a little extreme but I hope some of you reading this GET it.
So far the only way to retain this practical function is reverting to or continue using ipod software version 1.0. The most annoying thing about continuing to run v1.0 is everytime you connect the ipod to the computer, theres a popup begging you to update the ipod software. By refusing to update, you will miss out on some bug fixes (esp for Videora converted videos) and the volume limiter function.
Show your support for the lost Menu-Backlight function and maybe Apple will hear us out.

  • Why did apple ditch the light up apple logo

the light up apple logo is on the apple stores, all apple laptops and has been in apple commercials dedicated to the stickers that hi light on the light up apple logo but now with the new macbook there is no light just a cold hard metal dark and unexciting.

My understanding is that Apple does not require payment when their products are used in shows. That would be the opposite of advertising. Normally, product placement works the other way around: the show is paid, not the advertiser. If the Apple logo is hidden in a show, it is usually because the producers do not wish to appear that they are endorsing any particular product. Unlike other products used on set, the Apple logo is so prominent that it is a challenge to genericize without covering it up.
Most of the reasoning in this thread doesn't make sense. It isn't because the light is too intrusive, and it isn't just the converted that like it. Those are sweeping generalizations.
It is much more likely that the non-glowing Apple logo on the new MacBook is just a regular Apple evolution of style. For example, the three colors in the MacBook are new to the Mac line, but they are identical to the iPhone/iPad line. Well guess what, the Apple logo has never glowed in the iPhone/iPad line. Therefore Apple may have simply decided to bring over the non-glowing Apple logo from the iOS devices to the Mac, just as they brought over the colors and brought over many of iOS user interface conventions to OS X.

  • HT1848 Why did Apple hide the Transfer Purchase command?

Why is Apple making their software difficult to navigate (ie cutting the 'Save As' function from Mountain Liion?' Idiotic.

It's not really hidden; it's under Devices, not an illogical grouping with other device-related commands. But if you want to comment to Apple on the subject, you can do so via their feedback page:

CCan it be downgraded, someone must have a workaround

These text entry problems really started in iOS 7 and they've gotten worse over time.
I have described the problem to Apple in bug reports and feedback to no avail.
Basically the problem is caused by JavaScript(s) being given authority over user input control in web pages. It used to be that when you were typing into a field, it was just handled by the OS. Now, however, the JavaScript HTML5 web app handles it, leading to all sorts of problems, from laggy input to times where it won't let you select text to times when user input starts to be ignored after you edit something.
Whether it's a Disqus entry field in comments on a web page or a forum like this, more often than not, the user experience ***** on "modern" tablet-based browsers and is even worse on phones. It comes from a total lack of quality control and the growing separation between over-paid Silicon Valley web developers and reality. See, they get paid, whether it ***** to use, or whether it's great. They think they know better than users, and they never hire critical users to test things until they're perfect.
In fact the trend in the valley is towards the philosophy of the "Lean Startup" which encourages companies to dump beta software on users and only upgrade it if they complain enough. The perfectionistic, user-experience-centric approach of Steve Jobs is a dinosaur that none of the new crop of web devs understands.
Can we ever expect Safari or this forum on iOS 8.x to run well on an iPad 3rd-gen? Can we ever expect the promise of "the real Internet" on your phone to ever be reached, as Google Penguin 3.0 drives web development towards forcing you into crappy "mobile versions" of sites?

  • Why did Apple change the color labels of folders in 10.9.2?

What's the purpose of a dot when I can't even see them?
THE IDEA is to highlight a folder so you can easily find it.
I'm all for aesthetics but this is a change of practical design. It's annoying.

Also for the bug that iTunes doesn't minimize when I double-click the top edge of the window.
    It isn't a bug, it's a feature.
Actually, I kinda like the improvements to the "miniplayer" thing, even though it isn't the same thing as minimizing the app. The only thing I don't like about the miniplayer is the tiny, hard to hit icon used to toggle it on & off, but if I can just remember the Cmd-Option-M shortcut for that I'm OK with that too.
I wouldn't mind filling out a survey before they (Apple) curtained features.
After hanging around ASC for a few years, I have realized that almost everybody has very different ideas about the usefulness of just about every feature Apple has ever implemented. If Apple listened to users, I suspect we would end up with an OS so bloated it wouldn't even be able to crawl, much less run, on most Macs, & the user preferences alone would have so many options nobody could find the ones they wanted without help.
Actually, I think that may already be happening ... but I'm sure everybody has a different opinion about that, too!

  • When and Why Did Apple Drop The 160GB Classic Ipod

    Hi
I was going to go and finally buy a 160GB Ipod tomrrow.I see they don't even list it anymore on Apples site and Future-shop doesn't even list it on the site.
They only make a 120GB Now
When Did they Drop this and why???
Also Do any stores still have them in Stock???
I won't be spending the money on only a 120GB if thats all they make now
I've had my Ipod Mini 4GB since 2005 and thought it was time for a upgrade.
Please do tell me if Apple still makes the 160GB Ipod
    thanks

Apple has discontinued the 160GB. You can buy one online still, but not from Apple. Or buy a used one off Craig's List.
P.S. Actually Apple is still selling refurbished 160GB on it's site, if you want to go that route. I also found some new ones on Amazon. Buy.com may have some too.
